The ZeroWasteOakland yahoo group facilitates communication & discussion re: The City of Oakland, California USA's continuous improvement efforts & initiatives toward the goal of Zero Waste.
Zero Waste is a sustainability philosophy and design principle that goes beyond recycling, taking a whole system approach to the vast flow of resources and waste through society and moving in logical increments to eliminate waste.
On March 7, 2006 the Oakland City Council unanimously approved a RESOLUTION ADOPTING A ZERO WASTE GOAL BY 2020:

On December 5, 2006 the Oakland City Council unanimously approved a ZERO WASTE STRATEGIC PLAN to help guide future decisions regarding City disposal and recycling services, land use and 'green collar jobs' economic development policies, City procurement policies and operations, Extended Producer Responsibility, Zero Waste Sustainability Messaging and Communications, and cooperative Zero Waste efforts with other local jurisdictions in Alameda County and throughout the world:
