Subject: When does our purchase count the most?

I while ago I asked a question to see if it really mattered where we bought our
yuri now I would like to ask when buying our yuri makes the most difference.

Obviously pre-ordering something is the best but if anyone knows how sales are
tallied and what would be the point after release when a persons purchase would
still be worth something on judging wow successful a book or other media is.

I ask this is importing from outside your country of residence is best done in
bulk and so it is sensible to wait until you have a decent list but at the same
time I want to ensure that I support the sales of what I buy in the most
effective way. If I know how long I can wait after the release of the book I can
effectively plan my imports better.

I assume many on this mailing list would feel the same way as we are dealing
with very niche areas were every sale counts.

Cheers in advance for any information.

That's a terrific question. The real answer is "Japanese companies don't pay the slightest bit of attention to overseas sales."

Let's take something low-range like Hayate x Blade. A volume released in Japan might sell something like 12,000 copies. In the entirety of the rest of the world put together it's selling 2-3000.

One Piece sells 4 million copies a volume in Japan alone, and how many thousands in the rest of the world?

Fate/Zero sells 40K copies in Japan, I don't even know how many here, but probably closer to dozens at the price.

You get the point, right? Sales of anime and manga overseas are such a ridiculously small part of overall sales that Japanese companies have no real interest in overseas audiences. That's why they contract with distribution companies to handle the issues of localization/printing/distribution. They make money on the license and don't have to deal with the costs or the issues of the local economy. In effect, overseas sales are pin money and no more.

So, frankly, the few copies of anything we buy makes so little difference, it doesn't matter how you purchase them. "Collectors" has sold, oh, about 10 copies through my links to it. Let's be generous and say 40 other people bought it, not through my links. That's 50 overseas sales. It might make a difference if JManga was pushing Hakusensha to license books, but they can't, because Hakusensha's got an exclusive contract with Viz in America. So those 50 sales (and remember, I'm over-estimating generously with that number) is probably no more than a curiosity.

Cheers,

 Erica

Well, I'm not the biggest fan of this series as well (too much pwp, imho), but it's still worth of mentioning, being longest yuri games series ever made. And english translations of such games are still something rare.

Ah. Thanks for bringing those up. What is fantastic is that there are links on all of those pages to buy the game so you can patch it all legitimately.

I might not be a huge fan of these games but it is a true achievement to translate a series that now reaches eight games and other media too. Amazing work Petals Garden/Yuri Project.

Thank you very much for you fast and comprehensive reply.

Sadly while it was informative it missed the main focus of my question. I assume
this is due to my inappropriate wording and use of examples and I apologise.

The main piece of information that I needed was how soon after release are sales
numbers collated. In any country for many mediums, hence the placement on the
mailing list as I assumed that would take information form at least a few
people. How long is a property given after release to prove itself to be
'successful'?

If I may offer different examples.

"Penguin Drum" as it is called in the US has been released in the US. I however
need to import it as it will probably never reach the UK. Although my purchase
will only be an invisible dot of a single sale in terms of total sales but I
would like it to count for all it can.

I bought the Simoun complete collection late last year long after it came out. I
can not imagine that my purchase counted much towards Simoun's success at that
point.

So this is not about buying things from Japan it really is about all our niche
purchases and how we can make the market for the thinks we like look as
profitable as possible.

My appoligies again for essentially re-posting my question but I did not wish it
to end at simply Japanese manga sales as that is not all I buy.

Thank you again.

Mara

Distribution companies cannot see past pre-orders, because of the state of distribution here in the US. Pre-orders determine how many copies all distributors order, so strong pre-orders are critical. Sales after that are nice and contribute to "sales over lifetime" but if you want to make you purchase count, make it a pre-order.

Quick follow up to my comment from yesterday.

Today on Twitter Ed Chavez from Vertical Publishing said this: "obviously stores
are influenced by demand, which is why *preorders are what matter the most* for
projects like this" (emphasis mine)

As I said, your order counts most as a Pre-order. High pre-order demand means
higher stock order and longer shelf life of a book.

This is a hideous relic of a previous age of book/comic selling, but it is a
publisher's reality. If there are no pre-orders, no one will ever see the book
on the shelf as a walk-in. If you want a book, pre-ordering it means that you'll
make it easier for someone who has never heard of that book to randomly find it
on the shelf. But there is no way for you, an interested party, to not pre-order
it, then be sure of finding it on the shelf when you want it to be there.

For publishers it's pre-order or die.

Cheers,

Erica

Wow. Thank you for such a extensive answer. This genuinely will at the very
least change how I order books in the future, the only down side is that I do
most of my ordering online and from a bookstore that has no physical shop
anymore.

You are most welcome.

I also do almost all of my ordering online. The only local Barnes & Noble is useless for ordering. They don't do it well, or at all.

Ed's whole feed today was full of eye-opening numbers.

One of the most wonderful things about Yuricon is that is has brought me in
contact with people all over the world. This also makes running Yuricon events
challenging as you are all scattered across the globe. ^_^

I really want to do something for 2013, it's ten year after our first event, but
the reality around here is hotels do not want convention -we don't eat and drink
enough - and conference centers are simply way outside my budget. Once again I
find myself smack up against the giant wall that is "The Yuri market is
incredibly small."

But I'm tenacious. I want to do *something* in 2013. So I've come up with a
bunch of ideas and dose of reality and have put together a poll on Facebook.

I've said everything I can possibly say about Jormungand, so if anyone wants to

If you have bought/played Yuri Rei, I'm interested in a review of that, as well.

Sorry to pop in like this again...And while I do LOVE Milk Morinaga's stuff...I have a concern..and I hope I don't offend anyone by bringing it up. *^^*

But I just got my copy of Girlfriends Collection vol 1 from my local Kino...and was enjoying it greatly..until near the end of volume one.

Mariko said she went all the way with her boyfriend so she could be like Akiko.  It kind of...ruined the story for me at this point.   It almost feels like it's going down a Nana route or a road some other shows have, where it features the girls sleeping with various guys to prove ...well prove something.

I enjoyed Volume 1 greatly, and was planning to buy volume 2, but am now afraid to get it, in case it just turns into a "Let's prove we love one another by sleeping with guys"  campaign. :(  Can anyone tell me if I've gotten the wrong idea...if so I would really be happy to hear that.

Again..sorry for this mail..and hope I didn't upset - I know Milk-san is very well known, and I do love her manga...but this story..just scared me a bit.  Any advice or heads up on this story?

Kumiko.

No you are wrong, trust me! I won't spoil it, but its a drama thing. No, neither of em end up sleeping with guys, this is whole heartedly a yuri manga, no bad ends or anything. Don't worry, the 2nd book will more than make up for the end of the first. Believe me I'm a yuri purist (whatever that means) and I'm very picky, i usually only pick all or almost all female cast shows (Strawberry Panic!, Candy Boy (counterintuitave title i know), Simoun, Kanamemo). Believe me you'll like the 2nd book, and no it doesn't go down that route!

Hi all!

I'm looking for reviewers to write up reviews for series from Summer and Fall that I have not covered.

I've said everything I can possibly say about Jormungand, so if anyone wants to review Jormungand: Perfect Order it'll be nice to have a different perspective.

Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb

Psycho-Pass

If you have bought/played Yuri Rei, I'm interested in a review of that, as well.

If you want to do a guest review, read this first: http://okazu.blogspot.com/2007/07/guest-review-guidelines.html

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lyn - I specify the materials I'm looking for reviewers for in the message.
If you're not watching any of them, then thanks, but you're not who I'm looking
for.

Psycho-Pass is streaming free online legally, if you want something to watch,
btw: http://www.funimation.com/psycho-pass/

I've decided that I'll review that myself, since I know the writer's work a bit,
and have reviewed one of his novels previously.

Jormungand Perfect Order is also streaming free, legally on Funimation:
http://www.funimation.com/jormungand

We already have a review for this one, courtesy of Mara.

But feel free to watch some decent anime free and legally on Funimation. ^_^

Cheers,

Erica

Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb is only available with Anime Network subscription at the moment, so we're really looking for a person who is already watching it. (More anime and manga i digital only. It's not a bad idea to check out comapnies like Funimation and Crunchyroll, so you don't miss what's out there legally for free!

I appreciate the offers. I think we got everything we'll be getting. ^_^

For those of you who are not familiar with the series, Mouretsu Space Pirates is
a anime series based on a series of Japanese Light Novels "Miniskirt Space
Pirates." The novel and the English anime title are service-y on purpose, but
the series is much less so. ^_^

The series is streaming free, legally (with possible region restrictions,
sorry...the Japanese companies are still convinced those work) on Crunchyroll:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/bodacious-space-pirates

I've reviewed the series on Okazu a few times, but the short version is that
it's a good space opera and has some Yuri. It's also out on DVD
(http://is.gd/8cOdAq) and Blu-Ray (http://is.gd/eS7jXX) from Sentai Filmworks.

If you haven't watched, try it out for free on Crunchyroll. ^_^

Needless to say, it's region-locked. Sigh. (Probably not Nozomi/RS's
choice, I realise, but frustrating nonetheless.)

Still, at least the region lock on the DVDs is easily ignored. Hope
mine turn up soon. :)

Not their choice at all. The Japanese companies are still firmly locked in a
1978 worldview. It's an unfortunate reality and they can't really dictate terms
to the IP rights holders.

Manga publishers are, slowly, thinking bigger than county borders, but the anime
companies have a long way to go.

The good news is that crowdsourced funding like Production IG's Kick-heart
Kickstarter give me hope that at least some change can happens. They're shipping
the DVD worldwide with subs in at least two languages.

For the moment, however, I think it would be sensible to always assume that if a
US company licenses an anime then region-blocking applies, because that is how
the JP companies want it.

Cheers,

Erica

Today on Okazu, I take a look at a "classic Yuri" manga from 1957 in Love on the
Edge of Admiration and Desire - Yuri Manga: Sakura Namiki (‚³‚‚ç•À–Ø)

I also recommend reading Katherine Hanson's review of this series: Marimite in
the 50s:
http://yurinoboke.blogspot.com/2011/08/marimite-in-50s-sakura-namiki-rows-of.htm\

This is a manga that draws on the tradition of love at a girl's school developed
in the 1920s by Yoshiya Nobuko, translated into a "modern girl" setting in
post-war Japan.

Cheers,

Erica
