For those of you who share in the highly specialized Warhammer 40K fandom, James
Swallow is writing another Sisters of Battle novel. So - fanon potential! Esp.
given how much Swallow has developed as a writer.

BTW Erica, if you're reading this, given your enjoyment of tough and terrible
over soft and sweet, you might want to look into 40K.

Exit question: how many series could be easily adapted to great awesomeness to
40K? So far, I have Nanoha and Maramite...

Greetings to all the fine folk of the Yuricon group!

Lately, my friends have been pestering me to check out the anime called Mai
Hime. At the same time, another group of friends have been telling me that
My-Otome is better and more fun to watch.

As far as I know, aren't they both by the same creators and share pretty much
the same characters? Is the story that different that my friends have such split
opinions?

For someone like me who enjoys humour (slapstick or boob gags are fine by me),
and good action scenes, which is the better of the 2 to check out? And if I wind
up watching both, which one should I start with?

Cheers,
Val

It was GREAT!

I had zero expectations, frankly. The actresses are not, in fact, actresses, but
gravure idols, so I expected it to be a bit meh. It was delightful.

I will write it all up when I gt home and have a chance.

Now I am off to go I-don't-know-where with some friends.

Cheers,

Erica

I haven't seen Mai Hime yet, but I LOVE Mai-Otome. There are some good lighter moments in Mai-Otome and a lot of action, as well as an entire cast of awesome female characters (though there are some wall-banging moments towards the end). So this is a vote for Mai-Otome.

I have seen Mai Hime and My Otome
if you want the high school magical girl anime - Mai Hime
if you want the soldier maids with magical powers anime - My Otome

both are very good, I'm gonna recommend to watch them both
Shiznat is one sided in Hime, Shiznat is subtext in Otome
and if you dont know what Shiznat is watch Mai Hime first

Since My Hime came first, one should watch that first. In a way it makes My
Otome a more interesting viewing, because we're seeing the same characters but
in a whole another setting/world, and some of them just being different people
this time around--Pachy

Mai Hime was, for the first 24 episodes, excellent. Then they blew it to hell.

Mai Otome was ridiculous from beginning to end, but it was consistently fun.

I'd watch Mai Hime first, then Otomoe, so you know *why* Otome is silly, when
it's silly and enjoy both for being the same and different.

Cheers,

Erica

Ugh, the bad taste of Mai Hime's ending still lingers. Seriously, what were the
staff of Sunrise THINKING?!! ARGH!!!

I haven't seen Mai Otome yet, but if what people say about it being consistent
throughout WITH a consistent ending, then I consider it worthy.

And, it's not just the case in Asia. There's a lot of pressure by family and society almost everywhere to conform to "normal." That's why I favor stories like "Fu-Fu" over something like "Mai Hime" when the former depicts a couple just being a couple (i.e., "normal") versus lesbian desire driving someone mad.

Cheers,

Erica

Yes, thass true everywhere... its just that as an asian i wish the legal system

There will always and everywhere  be pressure to conform to "normal". We can only push to have the GLBT spectrum accepted as normal.. Asia does have some spots of acceptance: in Thailand, the katoey (transgendered) seem normal.

Confucianism not withstanding, Japan has one advantage in that homophobia hasn't been as religiously enforced as strongly as in the West.  In the Meiji Reforms, sodomy laws lasted little more than a couple of years before being repealed--and in the mid 1800's.  It's not that homophobia is not there, it's just that the gut reactions aren't as strong, and Japan may surprise us with a smoother transition than our poor unregenerate Westerners.  Recent legislation made gay marriage legal as long as one of the partners comes from a country that has legalized it.  It's a brilliant first step that even the USA is unwilling to take.

Lesbians in Japan need to become more visible.  From personal experience I can tell you that it's a gut wrenching experience and a very difficult thing to do, especially when you are not raised to put yourself forward.  The loss of friends, the temporary loss of face, the possible loss of family are huge hurdles to leap and time does not heal all wounds, but if change is to be made there is no other choice.

At least, I'm a little more hopeful for Japan than I am for the West.  The game is still being played, and we can always hope for positive results.

Just guessing since this is a rumour, but maybe an OAV done like the recent Negima ones (packed in with a manga volume). Seems to fit the small project theme a bit.

I believe you are close to the truth, Miwa. "Short animation" in this case is
far more likely to be a single *Short* packaged with the manga as an extra - the
same way Morita-san ha Muguchi is planning.

Ame-iro has been received favorably, but highly doubtful that it would have had
sales worth investing in making it into a one-hour OVA or, seriously, a
12-episode series.

Cheers,

Erica

I guess an "OAD" makes sense. I guess we to wait until the next Yuri Hime issue
gets released to see if they'll say anything about it.

I wouldn't expect anything so soon. Fujieda-sensei was conjecturing that in conjunction with a third volume of Ame-iro, perhaps, if they got it started now, which they aren't.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st  BluRay review

Nanoha the Movie is a retelling of the events of the first Nanoha TV series. While this may not seem like a good thing, it does pay to remember that back in 2004 the first Nanoha TV series was a scattered mess. As a spin off from the Triangle Hearts adult game series the first few episodes were nothing more than a bad Card Captor Sakura clone. Just with a few unsavoury elements left over from it’s source material.

It wasn’t until later on in the series when Fate was introduced that the series became interesting. She was a dark, mysterious magical girl with a troubled past fighting our main character. So the first thing fandom did was pair them together as a couple. Add in the fact the battles in the final few episodes were done in more of a shonen giant robot style (Complete with giant beam attacks) and the series took a complete 180.

So seeing that and seeing how the later series were more popular and sold better in Japan, you could see why the makers wanted to redo the original material. And for the most part Nanoha the movie is a superior retelling of the 1st chapter in the Nanoha universe.

Here the movie creators know what the fans in the series want, action and Nanoha/Fate. Luckily we got both fairly quickly into the movie. Fate is introduced much more quickly in this version, and we have that set up as the central conflict of the movie (with the Jewel seeds relegated to being a plot Mcguffin).  The movie better handles the two becoming friends through fighting, both with better action scenes and better introspection. It makes the pacing much better than original TV, which dragged on till the brisk pace of the last 4 episodes.

The action is also done like the later entries in the series, and here the movie shows of it’s animation budget. The final battle between Fate and Nanoha in particular is well done and I had a big smile on my face while watching it.

There is added scenes, including some nice bits showing Fate’s past and training. But the biggest character benefiting from the new material is Precia, who’s motivations are shown more closely as is the accident she had her in past. It fleshes her out greatly and makes for a much better character over all.

Thankfully most of the more unsavoury stuff from the original is gone too. Except for the transformation scenes which was pretty ick. Thankfully they only appear once for each of the leads.

The BluRay version of the movie comes with an English subtitle track that is fairly well done. Except for a few nits (Arf is called Alf and the TSAB is called the DAB) it’s well written and easy to understand. The subtitle font is middle of the road, readable but I would of rather had either a bigger black outline or a non-white font color. The picture and sound quality is amazing though, as colors stand out and the animation quality never dips for the battle scenes showing what BluRay can do for animation.

Nanoha the movie fixes a lot of the problems I had with the first season and keeps what I liked. And adds even more of what I like and reminded me of why Nanoha/Fate became the first Yuri couple I really liked.  I hope we see the same budget and care given to StrikerS when it gets a movie. Highly recommended to Nanoha fans.

Oh, Media Blasters! Your surprises amuses me immensely!

I say it's a good indicator that Kashimashi sold really well continuously when
it was sub-only.
