Moto Hagio or other 49'ers work in store in the future. I have a copy of it that
includes a signed bookplate and this is the holiday gift I am giving to everyone
on my list. And now that you have mentioned a copy for your local library, I
will also donate a copy to my local library, too. Thanks for the suggestion!

I really have to say, this might be the most important manga published to date.
Not only does it have some magnificent work by a master of the craft, it's got
some pretty candid insights into the mind of that master. And how often can you
say you want to HUG a member of the "Magnificent 49ers?" (The nickname for the
women who were largely responsible for the creation of shoujo, josei and BL as
we know it.)

The Magnificent 49'ers are a group of female mangaka in Japan that were more or less born around 1949 - many were close friends and shared living quarters while working on their manga. They contributed heavily to shojou manga and I would say revolutionized manga as we know it. In addition to Hagio-sensei, there are quite a number of 49'ers including Takemiya Keiko, Ikeda Riyoko and more...they also created works that were (are!) cutting edge then and now.

Matt Thorn has a wonderful essay about shojou manga (he has lots of great stuff) that you might enjoy reading: http://www.matt-thorn.com/shoujo_manga/japan_quarterly/index.php

As the manga are in Japanese, a lot of the 49'ers work are not translated into English or other languages - though you may find much more selections in Spanish and French, I believe.

Lyn -

They were women who were influential in the formational years of "shoujo" (girls') manga. Moto Hagio is one of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_24_Group

I am continually amazed at fandom's immediate response of the most negative reaction possible in any given situation.

Yes, I will ship to Germany, but I would ask that the library contribute to shipping, as it is very expensive for me.

Here's an idea....*before* you start coming up with reasons why it won't work, actually talk to the acquisitions library first and see if they are interested!

Hi all -

I had a wonderful time at NYCC/NYAF this weekend - and thanks to everyone who
dropped by the Media Blasters table to say hi or came to the panel Saturday
night.

The Panel was called "Gay for You? Yaoi and Yuri for GLBTQ Readers" and included
great comments from panelists and audience.

As a service, moderator Robin Brenner collated reading suggestions from all the
panelists and I couldn't think of anything better to celebrate National Coming
Out Day with than a list of Yaoi and Yuri:

Enjoy!

Hi all,
There isn't any yuri anime this season, but I'm looking for something to watch,
and I'm willing to settle for anime that require yuri goggles.

Was Sasameki Koto really the last yuri series we had, or am I forgetting
something? It feels like it's been an aeon since I've watched a real yuri
series.

Anyway, if there's definitely no trace of yuri this season, I'll settle for any
anime that looks promising.

As of right now, I'm watching the second season of Tegami Bachi, as well as the
second season of To Aru - Index. (I really rather they had made another season
to Railgun, but what can you do? At least there's the OVA that's coming out on
the 29th.)

The above two aside, I haven't spotted anything that sounds very interesting.

So, suggestions anyone?

Hourou Musuko starts in January I believe. It's kind of yuri. It's mainly about trans characters, but the main character, an mtf, does date a girl. It's a really good manga and was licensed by Fantagraphics Books. It's also by the same mangaka as Aoi Hana.

Tamayura is on all the Yuri lists, no clue if it actually has Yuri, but I liked the second episode enough to keep watching.

No, you are not wrong. We only get Yuri anime every two years or so right now. It's just like that.

Ah, yes I gave the first OVA of Tamayura a watch last month since I read that it
was directed by the same guy who did Aria. It has that same breezy, flow-y
feeling to it; that nice slice of lifiness.
It escaped my brain.
Tamayura is being released monthly, I think... I'll have to scribble it on my
dry/erase board, or something, since it will undoubtedly slip my mind again.
Thanks for reminding me. ;) I'll give ep 2 a watch.

For yuri slash potential, Squid Girl (in Japanese form, Shinryaku! Ika Musume)
is worth a shot. The premise is very similar to Sgt. Frog where instead of an
alien frog, it's an anthropomorphizing cute squid girl who want to take over the
world due to humans polluting the ocean. Of course that never pans out since
ended up working with a group of girls at a beach house.

Where's the yuri slash comes in? Wait for Crunchyroll to release Episode 2
today. There's a certain brown-haired girl who's a "little" obsessed with Squid
Girl.

Erica, were you at the booth selling all the DVDs?  There was a table full of hentai...LOL!  I asked you a question, but didn't buy anything.  It was only after I left the table that I thought to myself, "OMG...I think that's the Yuricon lady!"  I'm connected to Yuricon & ALC Publishing on Facebook...LOL!!

Hi all -

I had a wonderful time at NYCC/NYAF this weekend - and thanks to everyone who dropped by the Media Blasters table to say hi or came to the panel Saturday night.

The Panel was called "Gay for You? Yaoi and Yuri for GLBTQ Readers" and included great comments from panelists and audience.

As a service, moderator Robin Brenner collated reading suggestions from all the panelists and I couldn't think of anything better to celebrate National Coming Out Day with than a list of Yaoi and Yuri:

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Erica

I was one of the folks there. :-) I love selling their adult videos. It's so
silly.

Well, it was nice "meeting" you!

Cheers,

To those who care or liked this anime, which did have a little yuri in it (shrugs), it has been picked up.

By the way, this makes me think that Sentai and crunchyroll are connected someway

No, there's no particular relationship between Sentai and CR. CR licensed the streaming rights from the Japanese company, Sentai licensed the DVD rights.

One of the more complicated things for fans to understand is that the Japanese licensors keep all the pieces compartmentalized. Digital downloads, Streaming and DVD are completely different things and are handled differently by every company - and sometimes licensed to completely different distributors for whatever reason.

Cheers,

Erica

MangaNEXT, the only all-manga convention will be held on October 29-31 in East
Brunswick, NJ.http://www.manganext.org for location, registration, etc.

Sean Gaffney and I will be doing a Yuri Panel on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7PM.

I will be giving some stuff away, because I have stuff and would like to give it
away. :-)

I'll also be running a panel "How to Become a Manga Expert" on Friday at 3:30
and How (Not) to Talk to a Publisher on Sunday at 11:30.

If you are interested in being part of "The Industry" and want to know what it
takes to be an illustrator, graphic novelist, how to make it in Japan or the US,
DO come to MangaNEXT! It's got great guests, and lots of "how to" stuff going
on.

I hope to see you there, of course. Yuricon will not have table, because I am on
MangaNEXT staff so, if you see me hanging around and talking to someone, that's
me working. ^_^ Come join us for what promises to be a really great con!

Cheers,

Erica

Whatever reason is being free competition/free market.

That's one reason, definitely. Sometimes it's prior agreements, country
copyright/media laws and very often licensing happens purely because of personal
relationships that have been built up over years.

Since I can't figure out how to get the spoiler space to work, I'm just pasting
in random dictionary def:

–verb (used with object)
3.
to provide with a hat; put a hat on.
—Idioms
4.
hat in hand, humbly; respectfully: He approached the boss, hat in hand.

-----------
Real Post starts here:

Just finished rewatching Utena for the seventh time (at least). Thinking
about the scene close to the end where Jury, Utena and Miki are playing
badminton. It's the point where Jury says "You love Himemiya, don't you?" and
Utena responds something like "Not the way you mean love, Jury".

And the audience promptly goes "keep telling yourself that".

Just thinking of Jury in a sort of big-sister role to Utena. As in, taking
her aside one evening and saying "You do love Anthy in _exactly_ that way, and
there's nothing wrong with that. Now have another drink and go and tell her
what you need to, before I'm forced to give you a thick ear."

Your thoughts?

Well, certainly Utena does love Anthy. It doesn't take very much
watching of the anime to see that. Lol. To me, they will always be the
OTP of SKU. Regarding Juri? I could see her advising Utena like that,
every once in a while at leeast. Arisugawa Juri isn't known for her
openness or friendliness, but I think she definitely likes and
respects Utena, and she would want her to be happy with the woman she
loves. Just my thoughts, though. ^
