I thought it was kind of sweet, myself. :-)

I like the idea that Onashia has found a confident in Yun, the person

Lea Hernandez, writer/artist of the lovely
manga-influenced, cute-girl-couple-featuring

destroying who knows how much of her art and supplies,
her clothes and other personal things, and killing
most of the family's pets. (All the human people are
OK though!) Anyway, if you can spare a buck or two to

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the main character
of Takahashi Mako's "Short Cut" is certainly being paid a great
compliment... unfortunately, she doesn't see it that way.
Yuri Hime is the new incarnation of Yuri Shimai. It's basically the same
magazine (though with some changes, such as more manga and fewer text
stories), but owned by a different company.

"School Days" centers around a girl named Misaki who hates the co-ed
school she was forced to transfer to and desperately misses her best
friend from the girls' school she used to attend.
Please be aware that this release contains mature content, including het
(heterosexual) sex.

Well, for once I can say that these are not "notes." I just went ahead
and translated the whole kit and kaboodle.

There is *no* guarantee that this translation is anything like right.
It's pretty much my best guess as to meaning, coupled with the
occasional interpretive moment. I did not adapt the translation for
readability, except in those instances where I did. Enjoy the swiftly
changing tenses and uneven ebb and flow of the language. Typos will
also exist. Oh well. You get what you pay for. :-)

If I have a parenthetical comment, I'll set it off with an "E:".
Otherwise parenthetical comments are from the novel itself, usually
Yumi thinking. Some of my comments will be editorial in nature,
sometimes simply random nonsense because I couldn't help myself. lol

I don't know if I'll do this whole TL thing again, but I note that it
didn't take that much more time than synopsizing in detail. About
three months, give-or-take. OTOH, but the time I get through the next
book, the anime OVA will be out and I may be able to merely point out
differences in anime and novel. :-)

Because this is the whole book in its entirety, these posts are going
to be long, and many. I'll try to break the book up into logical sections.

In any case, I hope you enjoy it!

Erica

Hi Erica,

I just wanted to thank you for your translation. I enjoyed it immensely and found it very difficult to concentrate at work, knowing this gem was in my mailbox.

I once wrote a term paper for a Japanese literature class on the value of "translationese" - that roughness in text that exists when a translator tries to balance conveying the meaning and spirit of original Japanese text while transforming the words into fluent and smooth English. While the ultimate goal of a translator should be that the reader never even realizes that the story was written in Japanese in the first place, I argued that "translationese" provided deliciously chunky flavoring, and that having rough spots in the text was a small price to pay to retain a bit more of the original text's "kotodama" (which, for the life of me, I cannot translate into English... 'spirit'? 'unexpressed language'?).

While reading your translation, I could not help but be drawn into the world of Marimite much more completely than when I was watching the anime. The "translationese" really made me feel like I was inside Yumi's head. I don't know about you, but I certainly don't think in grammatically correct, complete sentences. If the standard process was (1) Yumi has a thought, (2) Konno-sensei must turn these thoughts into words and put them on paper (3) you translate those words, (4) the reader reads them, I almost felt as if I had skipped (2) and (3) completely, and was just experiencing the kotodama of Yumi's thoughts. It was such a joy to read sentences like "please allow it to be said", and know what Yumi was meaning in my gut without really being able to explain it with my mind.

As well, this being Yumi's lenses, Sachiko was suddenly THAT much cooler, even before taking the gakuran into consideration! <dies of bliss> ^_^

So, a thousand thank you once again for your translating efforts! I never would have been able to experience this otherwise!

Cheers,

Jenny

First of all, thank you, everyone who thanks me. One knows that everyone
will enjoy something like this - but it always feels good to know that
people are actually thanking one for the work. :-)

So many of us here are involved with fan efforts - art, writing, scnalating,
subbing eetc, and I cannot express enough how much a simple "thank you" goes
to making one feel as if one's efforts are not taken for granted. I'm sure
the folks of Lililicious, Otenba, Simoun-Fans and any other groups who are
here agree. :-)

>Hi Erica,

I found it just as difficult to work knowing I had it to upload... lol

How exceedingly well put! Obviously, were I to have done this for
publication, the *next* step would have been "English adaptation" where
those chunky thoughts are smoothed out and turned into natural language.

But for fan work, and especially for myself, I would alway rather err on the
side of translationese, for severa reasons. One, I get that flavor, two, I
want to know what they *said* rather than what they meant. I know that that
is not true for everone, but it is true for me.

Thank you. Although I personally feel that I could have done much better, it
feels good to think that someone feels that way! lol

When I began to read the novels, that was how I felt - I could understand
what was being said and how it was being said, even if I could not put it
into words. Trying to put it into words is...challenging, but rewarding.
Because I wasnt to share Yumi's thoughts with everyone - and because
Konno-sensei's writing has so much chunky goodness - I want everyone to know
about it, so we can all whine that the anime changed stuff. LOL

Once again, you're very welcome - and thank you for this email. It's made my
day. :-)

Nihao, minna.

As some of you may know, this little minion went to
Anime Vegas last week to try to spread the gospel of
Yuri. (That is to say - i had a table in the artist
area, trying to drum up interest in Yuricon, and
thusly, all things Yuri.) The reason there was no
panel is because i only found out about this con 3
months ago (a little late to plan/get approved). I
have suggested a Yuri panel for next year to the con
president, so we shall see.
Anime Vegas, according to the most recent figures,
had approximately 3000 attendees; a large portion of
which seemed to be made up of Cartoon Network types
(these are the type of anime fan who've only ever seen
anime on CN, and will probably continue that
tradition). The average age of atendee was 13 (and you
thought Otakon's crowd was getting younger). There was
an over-abundance of screeching RFG's (Rabid Fan
Girl), and Na<>ruto cosplay (if i never see another
Naruto anything ever again...). I can't begin to tell
you how many obviously lesbian girls/couples simply
walked right by the table. If you're a girl leading
another girl around by a leash, or, worse yet, if
you're carrying a sign that says "I love yuri!", why
would you not stop to enquire about, or at least, take
a flyer for the only all yuri convention/best place
for yuri on the web?!?
There were a few interested people among the crowd,
so it wasn't a total disappointment. Maybe a panel
will do better, as some folks i talked to still seemed
to think that yuri = hentai (wrong!, sorry - do not
pass go; do not collect 200 dollars). So that's it.
That was my Labor day weekend; how was yours?

btw- i'm writing this from a library playing host to
a monthly showing sponsered by AniVegas, and i can
hear the hordes of RFG's in the theater screaming.
now, where did i put that xtra-large slap-fan...

My club and I are setting up a con (Llamacon 2007, the

putting up yaoi/yuri panels.
So, in regards to yuri, I'd like to hear some thoughts

shows/manga/novels are most worth mentioning, how to

I seriously love this series.

I think this was the funniest one yet. Bossanova was just hilarious...
Mori's reactions to everything had me laughing hard.

Other things:

I bought the first two volumes of the manga. Why did they change the
name to Beroznoff? (I think that was the spelling)...

Ichigo Mashimaro vol. 1 had similar changes... like Noby, Mats, changing
-nya to meow... just little things that annoy.

I've written a piece of fanfic on Strawberry Panic's episode 18. Yup,
the one where Shizuma and Nagisa goes to Shizuma's vacation house.

Like many others(ok, maybe only me), i did not really liked how it
progressed, with the 2 leads being all sad and depressed at the end.

So i did some adjustments and wrote what i felt it may turn out, after
seeing that episode for the nth number of times.

This is my very first attempt at any sort of fanfic, so be kind and

If you liked episode 22, wait till you see 23! Since you are a member

Opera Glasses"!

I admit it - I was surprised.

It's not like my Drama CD collection is all shoujo series...although
the bulk certainly is. Hayate x Blade and Yokohama Shopping Log are
both technically written for a male audience.

But I was frankly shocked that a Drama CD could be as jam packed with
LFB-type fanservice as both the Mai Otome and Strawberry Panic ones were.

I don't know why I was so surprised. I guess I just figured that
LFB-ness stuck to the basics of visual perviness. That there should be
such lengthy and detailed (and oh my god, *tedious*) discussions of
underwear in a recorded CD kind of fried my brain a little...

The entire Strawberry Panic CD "plot" consists of two things - a
detailed (VERY detailed) inventory of Nagisa's underwear (did I
mention the detail with which we go over this?) and a side rumor that
Shizuma swims naked in the pool, squee. That pretty much covers the
whole story.

Mai Otome is a series of vignettes that involve, let's see, underwear,
groping, falling in uncomfortable (and likely anatomically
impossible/impractical) positions, Shizuru teasing Natsuki, Natsuki
getting ineffectually angry, etc, etc. Much like the anime itself...

So yeah, if you're one of those folks that buys those full body
pillows with anime characters half dressed on it, you might want to
look into these Drama CDs too. There's plenty of squealing and
embarrassed shrieks so you you don't need to understand the
Japanese....well, and since the plots are basically nonexistent
anyway, who's gonna care what they're saying, as long as they sound
"sexy."

Cheers,

Erica

(...not interested in underwear...please stop...I beg you...)

The evidence does rather suggest that you were asking for it, though. ;)

Yes, well, I cry uncle. I know know the source of Tomoe's infitalism
fetish...something I had honestly hoped to never think about ever
again.
