No, thank you. I'm glad to see people making use of Yuriville...it

Now that I can watch the sub (yeah, you're already on 4 :)

Was that Mai in a cloak and mask in the street shortly after the opening
credits? I'm sure it was supposed to *look* like Mai, because the hair
color and shape was too similar, but I can't tell if that's a girl's
fae. Mai as a villain would be a strange twist.

Glad to see Yukino and Haruka making a brief appearance, and glad to see
Julia skulking a lot. I hope we see as much of her as we did Nao.

While it's too early to tell if Shizuru / Natsuki is just a professional
partnership or something more, I liked the nod to those of us who hope
for the latter in the episode 4 preview. Shizuru makes reference to a
lingerie accident when Natsuki was a student. Natsuki's pissed. Shizuru:
"If I have to, I'll cover you with my hands." Natsuki: "No, that's
dangerous too."

While I'd still doubt we'll see any real yuri, at least we have an early
understanding of Shizuru, which gives more time for something to grow.
Last episode, a look from Natsuki made her switch from kissing Arika on
the lips to blowing in her ear. Hard to say whether the look was just
surprise or jealousy / annoyance.

Subject: Plug for Yuricon Staffer Stacy's new comics store

Hello all -

I want to share this little piece of news with you today - Yuricon
Staffer Stacy, who has been running online comics and collectibles
store Comic Fusion (http://store.comicfusion.net/) for some time is
now opening up a brick and mortar location in Flemington, NJ.

Grand opening is next weekend at 42 Main Street in Flemington, NJ and
I'll be there on Saturday to help Stacy out. (In fact I was there
today unpacking and setting up - they place is really nice!)

If you're in the Central Jersey area, or aren't, but don't mind
driving, do please stop by and give Stacy encouragement and money! She
has a very spiffy anime figures section all set up by yours truly - it
has at least a few characters of interest to us. More than a few in
fact. I picked up a lovely Maggie from ROD The TV today, there's some
Ikkitousen figurines and the most surprising to me - Akari from Battle
Athletes! I didn't even know they made BA figurines.

I'm going to plug some nice pre-order stuff from the Comic Fusion
website on Okazu this week, but do take a look at their website - they
have some spiffy goods.

If anyone wants to come by and help me help Stacy, let me know, so we
don't arrive in a group of 40 and cause her stress. :-) And if you're
ever in Flemington, definitely stop by and by a googaw or three.

Remember - if you're gonna get it anyway, you might as well get it
from a friend and Stacy and Comic Fusion is as good a friend as you'll
find.

BTW, Comic Fusion also does subscriptions for magazines and manga
series - a full service shop online and off. :-)

Cheers,

Erica

So, Ashley ends up being right. Sergey's assistant is not the male
version of Yukino, as Yukino and Haruka make what looks like a brief
appearance in Episode 3, that and I stumbled across a character chart in
the AS forums from Mai Hime that had Yukino and her male doppelganger
side by side, along with several other students that are in background
in Mai Hime but are now speaking characters in Mai Otome.

I just wanted to clear that up first. Anyway more to come when I see the
raw. From the stuff on 2-chan it looks like the plot keeps moving apace.

Now that I can watch the sub (yeah, you're already on 4 :)

It's a lack of patience, I know, oh well. ;)

Was that Mai in a cloak and mask in the street shortly after the opening

color and shape was too similar, but I can't tell if that's a girl's
fae. Mai as a villain would be a strange twist.

This is one of the most talked about things so far. Who is the girl in the cloak and mask? So far it seems to be a toss up between Mai and Midori, but after episode 4 I'm leaning more toward Mai. Given some of the clues we've gotten, it just seems to make sense. I've heard some people make reference to ROD the TV, in which Yomiko's absence was a lingering, tantalizing mystery through out the first half of the series, but this isn't quite the same. Mai's return will have big plot ramifications, but these glimpses and the immediate speculation that it's Mai, kinda lessen the suspense.

While it's too early to tell if Shizuru / Natsuki is just a professional
partnership or something more, I liked the nod to those of us who hope

It's definitely more than a professional partnership, they are pretty familiar with each other, especially when no one else is around.  Since Shizuru seems to enjoy teasing Natsuki, and Natsuki reacts despite herself, more often than not, that's usually a sign of very close relationship. I'd say intimate, but I'm still hedging my bets.

I also found that to be the case. In episode when Mashiro goes in to
complain about Arika and Nina (after they saved her life 3 times)
Shizuru (who has her eyes closed) hand Natsuki the report without her
asking for it, and Natsuki knew that Shizuru would was going to give
it to her since she didnt even really bother to look back to make sure
Shizuru gave it to her. This, at least to me, signifies they are
extremely familiar with each other in at least a professional setting.

For a more personal clue into their relationship though, i would point
out the scene in episode 3 when Shizuru hugs Arika to activate her
suite, Natsuki looks away looking very upset.

Also is it me or is Nina the girl that sits right across from Mai in
Mai-Hime?

Yues and yes. Yukino is the Pres. of Elias, Haruka is her Otome.

I like the buffed up new Haruka alot. And the fact that she and
Shizuru have "unfinished business". :-)

Pretty much. But when you think of the idea of the Otome as a whole,
there are so many other things you have to accepts as hand-waves,
what's another three or four? :-)

I did think it was a bit tedious of Natsuki to make it seem like a
*bad* thing to never sleep with a guy, considering, but perhaps she
assumes that that particular part of an Otome's education comes with
being assigned to an onee-sama. lol

Well yeah. OR, she may just make the decision - it's not like you
*have* to be an Otome. She may decide that love wins over duty.

...yeah, 'cause that happens in Japanese anything....

The hair would match what we see of the hodded one in the preview as
well.

Or mayber, driven by the need for power, the blck letter crowd may
have come up with a way to suborn the normal desctruction of Otome
powers with something horrible and Sauron-like, giving rise to tedious
dark, mad Otomes.

Two things I want to mention too: Reito and Midori. I think we've seen
'em already. Just my 2 cents.

We have an interesting mix of what we'd expect from MH and twists that
seem to mesh well. I never really liked MH Haruka - she was an
interesting person, but among everyone with power she could never be
more than an annoyance. Now she has attitude and a way to express it.
And then they made her subservient to Yukino - genius.

> I did think it was a bit tedious of Natsuki to make it seem like a

More than that, in the crappy translation I watched, she says "give up
on a woman's happiness." I found myself doubting that Shizuru would
agree with her on much of that speech.

I can't help but think that Mai as the hood is too obvious. I'm not sure
if Mai as Natsuki's rival is also too obvious. Most of the MH twists
were (well, I found) fairly obvious only in hindsight. They've pushed
this one on us a few times now which makes me dubious.

If it is right - Mai / Reito might be otome / master rather than an
illicit relationship. An otome's loyalty is to her master, with a
death-pact. If Reito's involved with the Black Valley crowd (was that
him fighting Shizuru?) then Mai may be opposed to the school's
interests, too. And the only indication we have that the Black Valley is
"bad" is Shizuru doesn't like it.

Well, that and the wanton destruction, which the good guys usually
refrain from...

In MH, Reito seemed like a decent guy - if you'll overlook his being the
Great Lord Of Darkness. He was a bit full of himself, but wasn't a wimp
like Tate. For Mai to be with him this time around (whether it's as
otome / master or otherwise) would be a nice twist.

I wasn't a Haruka fan until late in Mai-Hime, but now that I've come

around, I must say that Haruka rocks.  Haruka and Yukino make their
first speaking appearance, and while, ostensibly the dynamic between

the two of them is different, (I think Yukino is the noble that
Haruka serves) their relationship and their personalities still
haven't changed.  Which makes me grin stupidly.

Yues and yes. Yukino is the Pres. of Elias, Haruka is her Otome.

I like the buffed up new Haruka alot. And the fact that she and
Shizuru have "unfinished business". :-)

Me too. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of them later.

Episode 4 of Mai Otome introduces one of the thinnest psuedo-
scientific rationale for yuri since Stratos 4's space virus. Simply
put spermatazoa interferes with the nano-machines Otome's use to
enhance and focus their powers.

And PSA, don't forget that. I liked that touch, myself.

Now, I'm perfectly aware that power

in virginity is a cross-cultural staple of myths, legends, et al,
and, I'm not really complaining, but it is kinda lame. I think I
would have been OK with a cultural or political or some other
scientific or biological reason, but this just seems unnecessarily
silly to me.  But, that's OK. What this means is that the yuri
potential of this series just skyrocketed. (Though honestly, I think
we'll get the same or less amount of meaningful yuri relationships

as

the "forbidden-ness" of the straight relationships may take a higher
significance plotwise.)

Pretty much. But when you think of the idea of the Otome as a whole,
there are so many other things you have to accepts as hand-waves,
what's another three or four? :-)

Well, as I said, it was notable for being especially bad. Sometimes you just have to say no to really, really bad science. ;)

I did think it was a bit tedious of Natsuki to make it seem like a
*bad* thing to never sleep with a guy, considering, but perhaps she
assumes that that particular part of an Otome's education comes with
being assigned to an onee-sama. lol

Well, I imagine part of that was for Arika as well as the audience. Presumably, most girls who want to become an Otome are already aware of this. Arika, being a foreigner, was likely unaware of what she was giving up. Although, judging by Arika's reaction, she either doesn't really understand or doesn't care.

As an interesting corollary, Akane and Kazu-kun's relationship
doesn't look like it's changed either, so if the writers pursue it,
theirs would be a "forbidden" relationship. Which leads me to think
that once again Akane gets to be the object lesson for the cast and
the viewers.  Poor Akane.

Well yeah. OR, she may just make the decision - it's not like you
*have* to be an Otome. She may decide that love wins over duty.

...yeah, 'cause that happens in Japanese anything....

Well, it's probably happened before. I'd wager that this type of situation may have brought about Arika in the first place. Though, this may be an important plot point later on. As for Akane and Kazuya, let's just hope that he's a noble and she gets assigned to him.

Or mayber, driven by the need for power, the blck letter crowd may
have come up with a way to suborn the normal desctruction of Otome
powers with something horrible and Sauron-like, giving rise to tedious
dark, mad Otomes.

The black letter crowd are the Schwarz who have the "slaves" and are apparently a separate group from the Black Valley people with Rado, cyborg guy with Reito's seiyuu, and our maybe Mai, maybe Midori girl in the mask and cloak.
The motivations of these two groups are obviously an important plot point to be divulged later on, the Black Letter group may be traditional style enemies, but the Black Valley people may be something else entirely. Though, as unlikely as it for me to say this, they may want to look at other colors. ;)

Yeah I liked the new Haruka too, she had a touch of her old persona in
there as well. Yukino kinda looked a bit matronly though... but I still
like them. And I just now noticed that Nao has a sexy voice. I liked the
shower scene with Chie. hehe And the lesbian-virus... ya'll made it
sound like they were saying:
"Well because of the nanobots, dont be surprised if you or another girl
falls in love with another girl." Which wasnt the case heh. I thought
the whole "woman giving up her happines" line was a bit too much like
'women are only happy when married (and in the kitchen)' but that might
have just been me... ^^

the two of them is different, (I think Yukino is the noble that
Haruka serves) their relationship and their personalities still
haven't changed.  Which makes me grin stupidly.

Yues and yes. Yukino is the Pres. of Elias, Haruka is her Otome.

I like the buffed up new Haruka alot. And the fact that she and
Shizuru have "unfinished business". :-)

In theory, anyway. As I said before I don't think they're relationship has changed all that much. Haruka is still the "where Angels fear to tread" type and Yukino is the one who gently reins her in. I think all they did was acknowledge that Yukino was in charge of the relationship.

I did think it was a bit tedious of Natsuki to make it seem like a
*bad* thing to never sleep with a guy, considering, but perhaps she
assumes that that particular part of an Otome's education comes with
being assigned to an onee-sama. lol

More than that, in the crappy translation I watched, she says "give up
on a woman's happiness." I found myself doubting that Shizuru would
agree with her on much of that speech.

As I said, I think that was more for our and Arika's benefit rather than her own opinion on the matter.

I can't help but think that Mai as the hood is too obvious. I'm not sure
if Mai as Natsuki's rival is also too obvious. Most of the MH twists
were (well, I found) fairly obvious only in hindsight. They've pushed
this one on us a few times now which makes me dubious.

Well, yes they could pull a fast one on us, but I'll believe it when I see it.

If it is right - Mai / Reito might be otome / master rather than an
illicit relationship. An otome's loyalty is to her master, with a
death-pact. If Reito's involved with the Black Valley crowd (was that
him fighting Shizuru?)

Yes, that's Rado with Reito's VA. Not exactly the same character, but Sergei isn't Tate either.

then Mai may be opposed to the school's
interests, too. And the only indication we have that the Black Valley is
"bad" is Shizuru doesn't like it.

Well, that and the wanton destruction, which the good guys usually
refrain from...

Well, now that I think about it, I think Rado's move causing the plane to start falling was a distraction, since the fight with Shizuru wasn't going to be easy and probably wasn't to go his way. And he wasn't really intent on causing wanton destruction initially, he had snuck in and was looking for something. I'm guessing there's a bit of lost technology that has revolutionary potential and he wants to get his hands on it. Probably for a bad end, but it's still early.

Just noticed? :)

Oh, I *love* her voice. Good or evil, I don't care. After y'all were
talking about Mai HiME and I saw Yuuka Nanri in the list of seiyuu that
was the last prompt I needed to download it. I got hooked on her voice
listening to the Madlax soundtrack. She voices Sawatari in "The Place
Promised in Our Early Days" (wonderful movie, if yuri-free) and I have a
hard time reconciling the light, bleak schoolgirl with the Madlax OP/ED
themes. No such trouble with Nao, though.

omg I know!!! My fans are probably going to be angry
with me unless I get my next chapter up soon, I keep
putting it off in order to watch KnM again and again.
You should totally download AMV's of the anime. I
found several really awesome ones. I think I've also
become slightly obsessed of Himemiya Chikane... ^_^

Oh em gee, Shizuru is hot in Mai Otome! Seriously, I
went back and re-watched the three episodes I have so
far -just- to see Shizuru in her Robe again. She was
pretty in Mai HiME, but her uniform, just like with
her maid-looking dress thing in Mai Otome, just didn't
show it off. The Robe is just...omg. I drool.

Subject: Iono-sama Fanatics
atheniag

A little while back Erin mentioned this title, "Iono-sama Fanatics"
and I mentioned that I was getting it. Well I read it over the weekend
and it's really delightful.

To start with, the artist is Fujieda Miyabi of Miyabi's Moonphase
(http://www.moonphase.jp), the same artist who does "Kotonoha no Miko
to Kotodamanano Majou to" for Yuri Hime. And a bunch of other stuff.

The story is, simply a love comedy starring Iono-sama, the queen of a
small country, who happens to love women with long, black hair. She
comes to Japan to hit on girls and try to convince them to join her as
a lady-in-waiting. (As Erin mentioned, "sobame" is a woman who is next
to the Queen.)

Iono is rejected by one girl - and this same girl keeps coming back
like a bad penny as a running gag - and runs into our heroine, Eto.
Eto agrees to be a sobame, but insists she's only joking, when a crazy
woman attacks her and the Queen. The Queen takes off, carrying Eto
with her. They end up at an onsen, where the Queen convinces Eto to
join her.

We learn that Eto was, in fact, in love with her kouhai in high
school, but the younger girl left her for someone else. Now she's in
college, but she thought she was past this kind of thing - but Iono is
*very* convincing.

Iono is very, deeply and personally, in love with all her sobame.
There's Cass, the blonde crazy who attacked them earlier. She's
insanely jealous and wants Iono to love her exclusively. Which Iono
does, when it's Cass' turn. :-)

Bloomer is the Queen's costumer - and cool as the proverbial cuke. She
seems to understand the Queen - and Cass - way better than they do
themselves.

Freshi is the Queen's security chief and her daughter Argent (these
two cover several different completely different fetishes all at once)
act as the Queen's bodyguards.

Eto is a little depressed when she meets the other sobame, because
they all have specific roles, while she's sort of a free agent. The
Queen convinces her that her role is to "be there" and that's enough.
But there's a cute chapter where Eto tries to play Guide (complete
with cute costume made by Bloomer) to Japan, in order for Iono-sama to
find more cute girls.

Iono determines to hold auditions for more sobame, which drives Cass
crazy - and into disguise. But Iono-sama knows all the women she
loves, in disguise or out and Cass is found out.

My personal favorite is the last round of auditions. One of the
candidates, an adorable girl named Arata, misunderstands "sobame" to
mean a woman who makes soba noodles. :-) Arata is initially unsure
whther she can do the job, but she decides to go for it, after Freshi
meets her in the hall and gives her encouragement. Arata does make
delicious noodles - and, more importantly, saves the Queen's (and
Freshi's) life when the next "candidate" turns out to be an assassin.
While Arata and Freshi are staring deeply into each other's eyes,
Argent just gives her mother the old "Gambatte, Mom" and Iono-sama
gives her blessing to them. They are impossibly cute together,
especially as Freshi is a tough as nails, black suited, black glasses,
gun slinging kind of gal, and Arata is a little soba maker. All I can
say is "squee!". LOL

I recommend "Iono-sama Fanatics" highly for yuri that makes you smile.
If you're looking for sex this is not your manga, but for yuri that is
sexy and funny and cute without being nauseating- this is an excellent
example of the breed. I've added it to the Manga section of the
Yuricon Shop, in fact: http://www.yuricon.org/shop/manga.html#Iono

Just a few more updates to the website for you!

I've updated the Events page: http://www.yuricon.org/events/

The Comic Fusion Grand Opening is now listed - join us Nov. 5th at 42 Main.
St. Flemington, NJ to celebrate with staffer Stacy as she embarks on an
exciting new journey. :-) Drop by, tell us you love yuri and get a little
yuri-riffic present. :-)

The dates for the Univ. Illinois Urbana-Champaign lectures are up and so is
the official word from Sakuracon on out Yuri panel there. (Positions are
still open for panelists...email me privately if you think you're fit for
panelist duty!)

The Yuricon Shop has been updated slightly, as well. I've added a button for
International orders for Yuri Monogatari 3, since the other options haven't
been working out terribly well. If you're non-US, please use the
International orders button when ordering, thanks.

And a few new items have been added to the Amazon JP listing. Along with
Yuri Hime 2, and Iono-sama Fanatics, you can find a bunch more yuri manga
from Japan, like the exceptionally amusing Hayate Cross Blade and sex-filled
Shoujo Sect. Something for everyone. :-)

I absolutely promise that sometime soon I will update "The List" because I
have received about a million suggestions and I'm horribly behind in adding
all the new series that have come out. So feel free to send any suggestions
you have for "The List" to anilesbocon01@.... Not all suggestions
will make "The List", but I'll look into ever single last one, unless it's
impossibly stupid. :-)
(Dear World of Incredibly Obtuse Otaku - Please stop suggesting Belldandy.
She will NEVER be on "The List." Thank you, Erica.") lol
