Wow...my dad actually wants to take me on a trip to Japan. The reason? To buy cool cosplaying stuff, of course! But...he would feel better if I knew someone who lived in Japan, so do any of you? I need to know the customs, laws, etc., etc.

Customs don't really apply - you're just a tourist and a foreigner.
But there are many, many good books on traveling in Japan. Go to a
local bookstore and check the travel section.

Laws? What kind of laws? Like about buying stuff? Unless you plan on
purchasing thousands of dollars of anything, there's no law that is
going to affect you. I packed all my hundreds of dollars of doujinshi
and manga and toys in my luggage and took it home. No problem. If
something is very large or heavy, you can ship it home.

Other than that, what kinds of laws are you concerned with? Are you
planning on murdering someone? :-)

A good place to begin is your local library - the librarians there can
help you find books about travel to and around Japan.

Cheers,

Erica

That's Singapore.

In Japan, if you conduct yourself like a polite member of society, you will
still be considered a foreigner and tourist, but a well-trained one. Aim for
that and you'll be fine.

And use the word "sumimasen" alot.

The holidays have interrupted, a snowstorm slammed us in the NE and the
fansubbers are running slow. :-) And I'm busy working on the next ALC
Publication, which is very time and energy-intensive, since everything was
drawn by hand, which means I'm doing alot of filling in and cleaning up
pages, then relettering them. Right now it's taking about 1 - 1 1/2 hours
per page. To say that I'm chugging along is an understatement. Only, hmmm,
80 pages to go! :-)

And I haven't been manga shopping in a month - so I have no new finds to
talk about.

Hopefully, (please the gods) I'll have Aim for the Best! (the Aim for the
Ace! movie) to watch this week and I can wax prosaic on all the yuri subtext
in that. :-)

Has everyone managed to see ROD 14 yet?

I don't think everybody was watching the newborn Dutch Crownprincess ;).

I know mailinglists where people after a day of silence send messages with

Hi I've just gotten back into anime after a long hiatus. What's new?
It's been a while since I've caught anything more than Sailor Moon
or Inu Yasha on YTV. I just want to know if anyone has any
suggestions on series to get back in the swing of things. Oh, if I
take a long time responding to messages don't take it personally.
Sadly I have only been using a computer for a short while( I'm a

comprehension of this wacky machine goes. Thanks for any
suggestions!

Hi clea - tha's a pretty hard question to answer, because it entirely
depends on what you like to watch and what you've already seen.

Do you like action stories, or mecha, or magical girls, or high school
dramas or what? :-)

"The List" has been updated recently with asterisks (*) next to every anime
and manga series that's available in official English-language translations
- that might help you to find a seires you'll like.
"The List" is at http://www.yuricon.org/list.htm

Good luck!

Well, Someday's Dreamers, a new anime that just came out on dvd, looks cute.
It has absolutely no yuri subtext that I've seen on the first disk, but it's
cute in that 'slice of life' kinda way =^.^=

Aside from ruining my plans for the weekend, the snowstorm left half of foot
of snow here in the Philly area, roads were drivable by Saturday night. I
think you guys up north got hit way worse than we did.

I just got a new machine (finally) today and have been migrating from my 3
year old Powerbook to a new shiny top of line Powerbook 15". So, I can now
finally install all those programs that I've been hoarding because they
would run painfully slow on my old machine, like the new version of
Photoshop and Illustrator. So, I'll finally be able to polish up my old
pre-press and design skills.

I think I may have stumbled onto some Yuri subtext in Popotan, which I
watched in one sitting over the weekend. But, I'm not sure it's list
material since really it could be interpreted either way.

Yes, yes I have. I just haven't had the time to comment with work and my
computer migration. As expected I have some thoughts. ;)

Now that I've finally managed to see some PGSM, I am hopelessly
addicted. Those girls are just too cute. So, I am wondering if
anyone has any clue as to how well it is doing in the ratings in
Japan (do they even have ratings ala Neilsen in Japan?) and what the
prospects are of it continuing for awhile?

26 episodes are planned, as far as I know. Ratings ate in the single
digits, but it is on 7:30 AM on Saturday...and pre-school girls are
hardly a major ratings force anywhere.

Nonetheless, it's not the ratings that will make or break the series,
it's the toy sales. I'm betting that THAT guarantees a series forever.
(Says the woman who came home to her wife holding the new wand, locket
and lipstick toys...)

I agree, though, Jim - I'm willing to sit through 26 of the Spore if
only to get to Uranus and Neptune.

If they DO do 'R', then at least we'll get to see what Pluto will look
like - and for those of us who don't find little girls attractive,
it's a pleasant thought. :-) Mmmm, Setsuna's all of 23 - she's
ancient!

That having been said, I do find the current incarnations adorable.
Especially Minako as Sailor V. She's downright huggable in that wig. I
keep wanting to pinch her cheeks. LOL

Cheers,

Erica
