For about the last two weeks, I have had the following problem with my
Yahoo email:

When I open up my yahoo page, I am notified that I have 2 or more
messages in my email. When I open my inbox, there are no new messages
in my inbox. It is very annoying and I have written Yahoo about
this. They wrote me back and told me there was no problem with my
account.

I took screenshots and jpeg'd them and sent them to Yahoo for an
explanation. They have not responded to me after the initial "we got
your email and are looking into the problem" response. Anyone else
having this annoying problem?

First, order your mail by unread. it is possible the two messages were dated as received a long time ago. This is either a spam or a messed up clock at the sender level. Then check your other folders.

Thank you very much. Chromeless seems a bit far for my tech abilities, but I can do the rendered HTML ok now. It's going to be v. useful - cheers!

Or I can just share what I normally do ... won't call that "enlightening" by any means ... :P

Since I use a laptop, I often run Y-Mail by itself in a "chromeless" window to save space, and do everything else in a different browser window. The upside is that because there will be no add-ons running, everything seems a bit faster. No chromes also means I won't be wasting valuable space for toolbars. Plus since I am already running two windows, there'll be no complication for drag-and-drop.

However, it does have its downsides ... there are no taskbar counter updates, no taskbar flashes, no mouseover pop-ups, and the normal context menu of the browser no longer works (thus no built-in spell check suggestions, but you can still use the one in Y-Mail).

As for copying the rendered HTML construct, it just means that instead of right-clicking on the image and choose copy, you'll need to create a range that contains the image and copy that instead. Right-clicking will only copy the image cached on the computer, which is why it won't work for email composition. You need to select a range then copy to grab the actually structure of the selection (meaning the image url will actually point to the one stored on the server).

I believe that both Firefox and IE7 can now copy the actual HTML structure. The version of Opera I had installed doesn't appear to work though.

Thank you but I think I may be being stupid - I can't drag and drop photos from flickr in one tab of firefox to Yahoo Mail in another tab. Also, how do you copy "rendered HTML"?
I suspect I ought to know the answer to both of those questions but would love to be enlightened. ..

I have experienced this issue before.
But at last, I figured it out because I had some filters and the mail was dispatched into the folders. So maybe you should check your personal folders.

Thanks, H.  All folders check out okay.  Nothing is there that has not been opened.  Since this happens every day, throughout the day, it's definately on the other end somewhere.  I just wish Yahoo would respond and fix it.

Hi Ryan...I know you wanted us to use that thread you started a while back....but I just looked for it and can't find it anywhere....sorry I tried

I'm a bit behind....but last week someone suggested including Bcc as a "Rule" for Filters.....EXCELLENT SUGGESTION!!!!!!

Ryan...as I'm sure you know.....most Spam and Junk Mail is sent Using the Bcc field.....it's pretty much a no brainer Ryan.....I can't figure out why Yahoo left it out......and some people might have reason to Filter Bcc Mail to a separate Folder....either using Bcc as a stand alone Rule or in conjunction with others

I think setting it up as it's own "Rule" would be a good idea....ACTUALLY.....why not separate all 3.....like this

If all of the following rules are true...

From header

To header

Cc header

Bcc header

Subject

Body

This would give us the Greatest Flexibility when creating Filters, Ryan......and we all know how important Filters have become

Bottom Line......if Bcc is offered as an Option for Sending Mail then we should have it as an Option for Filtering Mail

Ryan I'm Thanking You ahead of time because I'm sure you'll make this happen

Actually, there's a more serious issue going on and it's not getting much exposure because users don't know about it, or rather, can't:  missing email. You wouldn't know something is wrong if you don't know about it - so if email never gets to your Y! box (any),  then it "never happened".

I've been doing some research on this issue and have exchanged a few emails with very helpful Y! support. Regardless, this is whats going on (at least from what I can see):
  • Y! is deferring incoming connections - not all, just some. I am aware of the checklists about proper email, and well, good luck trying to figure out why one email from the same SMTP server is deferred, the other goes through. Both have SPF (only, no DKIM).

  • I don't know where it says that email is blocked instead of simply automatically Junked - re:  (delivered to your Junk Folder), but the point is that it seems blocking is occurring.

  • So if  someone sends you email from an unfortunate [insert whatever criteria here, server, ip, domain, etc.] then there's a chance you'll never get it - and you won't even know about it.

While we all love cleaner In Boxes, "false positives" are, well, unacceptable. I'm in IT, and when a decision is made on things like email gateways/filters are concerned, the top concern isn't about how good it can track down UCE/SPAM/PHISH,  rather, it's how good it makes sure legitimate email goes through.

And this isn't a "jab" at Y!, just getting real here that adds insult to injury: I just got another one of those "Vi.agra." emails in my Inbox....but that other email I'm expecting (testing actually),  is lost somewhere....

This isn't a support request....just bringing this up. It's not "a setting" or something - it's not account related. Things are pointing to some network/gateway activity doing "something".

Hope everyone is having a great holiday season!

Thank you for this.  Your explanation seems to make the most sense to me.  If only Yahoo would get on the ball and fix this or own up to it.  It has been five days and after repeated requests, they still have not responded to this issue.  Clearly they don't care, aren't interested in fixing the problem, or have a deal with Google to send them new business.  Shoddy customer service is a poor excuse for solving this problem.  I've had more insight from all of you in this group than Yahoo is willing to give me.  Thanks again.

ON farm 622 in classic mail, you are unable to read the body of emails
nor add attachments and in the beta, mail does not appear at all. On
farm 308, attachments don't appear and words are overlaping links.

I don't know if that'd be do-able. The whole point of bcc is that
addresses inserted there are not visible (Blind). The receiving end
is never supposed to know the contents of the bcc. Being able to
filter by this could violate that rule.

Well yes, I suppose Y! can see it, but Y! is not allowed to let you
see it. It's like when accepting a message w/ a Bcc, Y! is taking an
oath to keep the bcc's contents secret. By letting you filter it,
they would be giving you some knowledge of what the bcc contained,
thus violating the oath.

Aside from the ethical issue of partially revealing the bcc, I don't
think Y! could technically implement filtering by bcc. When a
message is sent, whether from a Y! server, an MSN server, whatever,
it is a file containing data of the message body, the to, cc, from,
time sent... I don't think bcc is included in the file. I'm not
exactly sure, though. If it is included in the file, the Email
program is under explicit orders to keep it hidden. So, either case,
the Email program either can't or won't reveal the bcc (hence it
being absent from message headers).

Really, it can't happen because it goes against the definition of the
bcc. Even if it didn't, it's likely technically not possible for an
email provider to allow filtering by bcc.

Actually, the RECEIVING end does NOT have access to the "bcc" field. It's not a "weakness" anywhere, it's by design.

The purpose of "bcc" is blind copy - therefore if any part of the email (including the headers), contains this information, then there is no "bcc" to speak of. It's essentially a "cc".

As the SENDING side however, yes, your application/program/email app, "knows" who you sent your email to, including the blind copies. This is likewise nothing special, you can use any email software (desktop or webmail) and you'll see this. Just check your SENT folder in Outlook for example.

As an aside, it's really not a good idea....sorry. Let's assume it's actually possible - if all the bcc emails were somehow available in headers:
  • the whole concept of bcc, and whatever it's used for is gone

  • if you were planning on not letting Person A know that you sent a copy of your email to Person B, well, that's not happening - it's trivial to sift through headers - much like whatever filter will do.

  • spammers will have a field day - how? Think of it this way, since gaining access to "bcc" is synonymous to just using "cc"....oh my...

    • So if your buddy sent the entire neighborhood an email, and if only one PC in the neighborhood had  malware that harvests email addresses, all the malware has to do is scan the headers...and all the neighborhood's email addresses are toast.
Have a great holiday season everyone!

That's likely because you have only installed flash for IE and not Firefox. Visit adobe with Firefox and download the flash install program for browsers other than IE.

Hi Bill,

I'm pretty sure the other respondents are correct about the fact that
we can't offer access to the BCC info for filtering purposes, however
if you think you are getting spammed via BCC can't you just create a
filter set to "To/CC header: does not contain billsville_99"?

Anytime it works fine at one place and not at another tells you it's something environmental.  I login in from multiple locations using multiple browsers (IE and FF/work and home) all the time.  When I receive an error on anything at work I suspect firewalls and the like.

Hi Ryan......yeah I guess you and the guys are right....I was just reaching for perfection....lolololololol.....I use Filters and Folders and they make life so much easier.....very organized....and I do have 2 Filters set up for billsville_99.....that's become my public e-dress.....one Filter uses it for the "To/Cc" field.....and another uses it for the "Subject" field.....both Filters send all billsville_99 straight to the trash......the only reason I get mail from the few yahoo groups that I belong to is that I also set up a Filter directing all mail with......yahoogroups.com.....in the To/Cc Field to a Folder I set up called.....Yahoo Groups.....and it works perfectly.....I also created a couple of Personal e-dresses each with their own Filter and Folder.......and again....it works perfectly........and I have other Filters and Folders set up for various things....and yep....you guessed it....they all work just fine

Now having done all this.....my Inbox is left with nothing to do....except....each week no more than...let's say 6....pieces of spam....each using Bcc.....make it past the Filters and into my Inbox.....I KNOW...I KNOW...I Can Live With It....but like I said and the beginning.....I was Reaching for Perfection....lolololololololol

Bill

If you use the integrated chat with mail, have a decent firewall, and have recently upgraded to Flash9, you may see connections to Yahoo! on port 843 when chat is fired up the first time for the session (other than 5050). I think it might have something to do with this:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/fplayer9_security_04.html

In short, I'm guessing that means you may need to allow connection on port 843 to Yahoo! also for the integrated chat to function.

Decent firewall?
Oh my god... What the hell the guy who wrote this had in mind?
We spent millions here with security stuff... -lol

And yeas my flash players is all up to date just like my Adobe CS3 Suite.
So, this might not be a flash issue, even firewall...
Something is wrong with my farm or something for Windows just like I said at home on a Mac (Safari and Firefox) it is all OK.
