Ireland Genealogy is a group that was set up in 2001 with a very broad view of genealogy. I live in Ireland and this group reflects the attitude I have with my From Ireland web site - I set the group up so that people could learn about Ireland, not just lists of names and filling in trees as per the dictionary definition of genealogy. People outside Ireland sometimes have a 'funny' view of us, they don't see us as we see ourselves - and vice versa.

So, Ireland genealogy has a number of reasons for being - to try and give out genealogical information and help - for those of us in Ireland to learn about those of you not in Ireland and those of you not in Ireland to learn about those of us here. It's about being friendly, helpful and above all understandig of those who are beginners. It's about the newbies who pluck up the courage to post their first message and find themselves with helpers off list.

Ireland genealogy began for lots of reasons, but it continues and succeeds because it has captured the best characteristics of the Irish in those who are the ancestors of those born in Ireland.

If anyone on this group can help you - then they will - on list or off list. You may also see fighting Irish - but don't get upset, any seeming arguments are usually amongst people who want to learn from one another.

Don't subscribe to this list if all you want is names - do sub, if you want to find people who will help - later if not now, and if you want to find out about the Irish character.
