Greetings Meanie,
May I ask where you are moving to in WY?
My answer is going to be a "Yes, BUT...".
If you read the homeschool regulations in the state of Wyoming
(http://www.k12.wy.us/alted/statutes.html) - nothing is said that name of
student names are required - just the curriculum.
Now - here's the BUT.
If the public school does find out about an individual that fits the
compulsary attendance - and have no documentation of the school status
(whether in public, private or homeschool) they *must* report the names to
the state of Wyoming by law. The state then *assumes* that the individual
is truant and a visit by the state is warranted. How do I know? I had to
write the program for local school district to keep them in compliance....
In short - if you wish to make sure the state stays off of your back - list
the name(s) of the child(ren) and they know they aren't truant - otherwise
you are asking for trouble. If you're paranoid, it's best to be upfront and
avoid the *appearance* of trying to be shady.
In short - not listing the names will likely cause you more grief than not
and really doesn't help you out. If they really wanted to know the names of
your children they can find out through other avenues.
Wyoming is a pretty homeschool friendly state overall.

My name is Melanie and I live in California for now but am planning
to move to Wyoming. I saw this site and read about the form that is
sent to the "locals". In California we have to fill out a form
saying who we are and ages of children being HS but no names of
children. Is there a way to get around giving the names of my
children? I'm probably a little paranoid but, hey, I'm Californian.
Thanks for any info.
Colleen,
We are in the process of deciding on website and what it will look like. At
this time HOW (Homeschoolers Of Wyoming) do not have a website. The only
homeschool group in Wyoming that I am *aware of* is Gillette Christian Home
Educators (GCHE) - http://gche.net
Homeschooling in WY is - well - Wyoming. WY tends to be neither friendly
nor hostile to homeschooling. Although some HS families are paranoid that
somebody just might find out that they're homeschooling and if that happens
the world will come to an end as we know it. However, at least current
environment, their fears tend not to be well founded.
The state laws are simple and straightforward - they are posted both at the
public school website and at http://gche.net/wyostatutes.htm
Basically - fill out a one page sheet saying who you are, your kids names
and basic curriculum, send it to the local school district and you're legal.
There is a local homeschool group in Casper. I will get the contact
information for you later as I'm at work and my list is at home.... Natrona
County homeschool group will be the ones to send you a packet telling all
about them and us... :-) The homeschool convention will be in Casper on May
17-18, 2002.
Of course - I suggest you sign up with HOW so you can get $15 off HSLDA
membership - and I strongly urge every homeschooler to become a member of
HSLDA. As far as I'm concerned it's as much a necessity as education. Also
urge everybody to sign up for HOW newsletter - cost is dirt cheap -
$5/year. But this allows people to keep up with what's going on in the
state of WY.
Pleae feel free to ask questions or simply say "hi" or whatever. Hope I've
been a help.

Hi there! I am Colleen, a homeschooling Mom currently residing in
OK. We are hoping to relocate to WY in the very near future. It is
my dream to go "back home!" We pulled our oldest out of private
school and started homeschooling last summer, and we really like it!
I joined this list to find out about homeschooling in WY. In reading
the archives, I have found the link to read the laws. Thanks Rocky!
I also see that there is a state organization called Homeschoolers of
Wyoming. I was unable to find a web page for this group. Rocky, are
you the one to contact about this group? I am interested in finding
out if there is a local group for the Casper area.
I am also really just interested in finding out what the
homeschooling "climate" is like in WY. Here in OK, there are a lot
of homeschoolers. We get discounts at book stores, etc. Businesses
are very homeschooler-friendly. And when we are out during the day,
people don't even bat an eye about kids not being in school. I am
wondering what it will be like for us in Wyoming. Are there any
other e-mail lists for folks in WY?
Thanks for letting me ask all these questions, and thanks in advance
for any responses!
Colleen
Greetings!
Stephen and Cindy Munger are serving as President of HOW - and I forwarded

I'm glad they reacted so promptly.

Kimberly,
I have forwarded your other email to me to the President of HOW
(Homeschoolers Of Wyoming). They have the information on all of the
homeschool organizations within the state and should be able to help you out.
Sometimes they are a bit slow in responding. If you don't hear from them by
week end let me know.

Thanks for your reply. Our home is in Evanston. We are currently in Iowa, but will be moving on to Laramie soon. The reason that we would be going threw Wy for our homeschooling is because of our residency in the state, and because we do not stay in one spot for more than a year. So I would say that I would be working with the people in Evanston mostly. I hope this helps a little. My daughter will be starting Kindergarten in 2002, and I want to know all of my options before I get her into a public school. It would help as well if any of you could tell me why you chose to homeschool as well. I also wanted to know where to first start, as well as what kind of lesson plans that you get, and where to buy them. Thank you for all of your help, and I am sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. I thought that I had sent this 2 weeks ago, and realized tonight that I had just saved the draft because I was in a hurry the day that I started it. That's what happens when you are a busy mom!! Hi all,
I'm 16 and finishing 10th grade. I'm in the process of trying to get a
computer job (talking to recruiters, etc.), but the minimum requirements
most jobs have is a high school diploma or equivalent. I'm thinking of
getting a G.E.D now (and still continuing home school), but I'm wondering
how that would affect applying to colleges in the future. Even though I'll
be finishing 12th grade in home school, I obviously won't be able to get a
standard high school diploma. So should I get the G.E.D? If so, is it OK to
get it now? Would there be any advantages or disadvantages to getting it
now? Thanks.

Hi Rocky! It would help as well if any of you could tell me why you chose to homeschool? I know what my reasons are, but would like another perspective as well.
Also could you tell me a little more about the convention with CHEC? And are their any snail-mail mailing lists that I can get on for more information as well? What about the local library? And where do the curriculums come from? Like I said--full of questions! I am really excited about this, and want my children to do well. I also worry about their social development as far as not having enough friends or activities. Any help with that would be appreciated as well.
I am so glad to have found you all!! Thanks Rocky for the response!!

Hi Rocky,
Thanks for the information about the form. I feel a little better now. :-)
We are looking at Freedom, WY---but there are other towns in the
valley--Afton, Thayne, Alpine, Etna, etc.... that we are considering. The
area is about 35 miles south of Jackson. Thanks for any information.

The school typically sends a form you can fill out. It's basically the
demographic information (name, address, phone #, names of children being
homeschooled) and what subject matter you will be teaching during the
year (Geometry I, Chemistry, Language Arts, etc.) Nothing in any detail
is required - they just want to know that you are covering the basic
material - not which curriculum you're using or anything.
I'm not sure I know where the Star Valley area is - can you tell me a
name of a town?
Thanks,
Rocky

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello Kim,
Good to "hear" from you. The homeschooling laws in Wyoming are pretty
straightforward. You can find them at http://gche.net/wyostatutes.htm.
There aren't any educational requirements on you, as a parent, for you to
be able to homeschool. You will find that Wyoming is fairly friendly to
homeschooling.
You didn't say where you are currently at - or where your residence is. But
one of the best resources available to help you get started is a local
homeschool support group. Another great resource is homeschool conventions.
Wyoming already had their state homeschool convention. CHEC (Christian Home
Educators of Colorado) is having theirs in June 21-23. If you're
considering homeschooling I highly recommend these two avenues.
If you let me know where in WY you will be at I can get you a contact for a
local support group. If not in WY where you are currently at and I can at
least get you a contact at the state level of the state you're at.
Let me know how I can help you in anyway.
In His Service,
Rocky

I just ran across your site whille looking for information on
homeschooling in Wyoming. My children are not in school as of yet.
We travel alot with my husbands job, and are possibly wanting to
homeschool. We have a home in Wyoming that we do rent out, and our
residency is still in Wyoming. Could anyone give me any information
that I might need....let's put it this way I am so new at this I have
no idea what I am doing!! I need help with everything from what I
will need to do everyday to make homeschooling succesful, to state
requirements on my education to qualify to be a homeschooling
parent. Any information that you feel is important for me to get
started would be GREATLY appreciated.
I also want to say that it is refreshing to find a site that is
incorporating God and schooling together into the same sentence. I
am glad that there are still people out there that find this
important.
Thank you for any and all help.

Hi, from the Christian Homeschoolers Association of Laramie County (CHALC) in
Cheyenne! : )
>>Are you (each individual in this group) a member of HOW? If not, why
not? <<
Yes, we're members. I think. We get the HSLDA discount, so we must be signed
up somewhere! ; )
>>Have you signed up for the newsletter?<<
Yes.
>>Have you attended the state conventions the last two years? If not, is
it because the conventions weren't meeting your needs? <<
Nope, haven't attended. Wish we could! Although the prices are VERY
reasonable as far as conventions go, we still can't afford to go. Besides,
our van wouldn't have made it all the way to Jackson. Sigh.....
>>How can HOW serve you better? <<
If I come up with anything I'll let you know. : )
>>How can HOW improve state conventions?<<
Convince the motels to fly us in and let us all stay for free? LOL!
>>Do you have any comments on HOW? Suggestions, complaints or whatever. <<
Thanks for all the work you guys do. It's appreciated!!

Greetings!
I am the new VP of HOW (Homeschoolers Of Wyoming) and am striving to
improve HOW as an organization to serve better. If I may - I'd like to
impose on you for just a few quick questions. All information will be
strictly confidential between this group.
Are you (each individual in this group) a member of HOW? If not, why
not?
Have you signed up for the newsletter? If not, why not? What can we do
to improve and entice you to sign up for it?
Have you attended the state conventions the last two years? If not, is
it because the conventions weren't meeting your needs?
How can HOW serve you better?
How can HOW improve state conventions?
Do you have any comments on HOW? Suggestions, complaints or whatever.
Thank you for your precious time. My email address is
rmarquiss@... if you don't want the whole group know your
reply. I give you my word as a born again follower of Jesus Christ
that any and all information given will be held in strictest
confidence and only used for the sole purpose of improving HOW as an
organization and to serve the homeschoolers in Wyoming better.
I am strongly recommending a book as a graduation gift or a basis for any
learning program. I am buying Success God's way for all our friends who
have kids graduating this year. I can't think of a better gift to get them
started in their adult life. I also recommend this book for parents who are
looking to answer some of the questions below. It was a very helpful book
for me!
Dr. Stanley's hits on positive thinking from the Christian perspective.
This book outlines "how to become a success, and shows you how these
principles are solid biblical truths! If you are looking to the answers to
the following questions this book is for you. Is it right for me to want to
be successful? Can I live a godly life and still be successful? Is God even
interested in me being successful? How do I do it?

Many of you know that as a list moderator I do not sent out a lot of messages. I only send them out when I have a great contribution to make.
