Controversial Archbishop Flees Italy
religion today
zoomata.com staff posted: Thu. Nov. 27 12:44 am
African archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, who rocked the Vatican by eloping then
repenting, has left Italy for his native Zambia, according to news reports.
Vatican officials reportedly knew Milingo had planned a trip home, but they
were not informed on his departure nor his return.
It hasn't been a good month for Milingo. First the Vatican stopped him from
appearing at a press conference, then he took off for Northern Italy for a
series of medical exams sparking rumors that he was contemplating moving
from where Church officials have him under 'house arrest' in a Rome-area
monastery.
Milingo fell from grace in 2001 when he married Maria Sung in a group
ceremony of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification church. Pope John Paul II
managed to bring this embarrassing stray back into the fold a few months
later, but Milingo has been kept out of the public eye ever since.
His appearance at a benefit to raise funds for Catholic missionary work in
Africa on Nov. 3 in Rome would have signaled a fresh start for the
73-year-old. After the Vatican gag order, Milingo headed to Northern Italy
where he's always had a strong base of support. Italian media coverage has
been similar to that given movie stars -- with much speculation on the
reasons for his visit, where he has been staying and what he has been
doing. Leading daily Corriere della Sera reported that a friend close to
him said his "health is precarious" and that once word got out operators at
the hospital in Lecco had been "bombarded" with phone calls from concerned
locals.
Rumors that Milingo was not only licking his wounds but also looking to
move were not met well. Molteno, the town reportedly chosen by Milingo,
won't offer a very warm welcome. Mayor Ferdinando De Capitani told
newspapers, "We hope he doesn't pick our town, we're not ready
psychologically or on a practical level to offer him a place to stay."
The Zambia native, known for his exorcisms and faith healing, was called to
Rome in 1983 so that the Vatican could keep a closer eye on him. Milingo
refused to be confined to the desk job they gave him and soon gained a
large following in Italy, where he became a popular figure on television
and also cut a CD.

Medicating kids a hot topic in Senate
By HOWARD FISCHER
Capitol Media Services
11/25/2003
PHOENIX -- A fight over the rights of parents to medicate -- or not
medicate -- their children is taking center stage in the battle over
revamping Child Protective Services.
Sen. Mark Anderson, R-Mesa, is pushing a provision to spell out in law it
is not abuse or neglect for a parent to refuse to put a child on a
psychiatric medication. That would preclude CPS from taking the child from
a home.
Anderson said CPS has tried to intervene solely because a parent does not
want to drug a child.
He cited the trend to put children labeled hyperactive or attention-deficit
disorder on Ritalin and other drugs. Anderson said a parent who believes
there are better alternatives should not have to fear having the state
decide they are unfit parents.
But the proposal is drawing fire from Sen. Robert Cannell, R-Yuma, who also
is a pediatrician. Cannell said the provision would needlessly endanger
children who suffer from ailments far more serious, like epilepsy and manic
depression.
The debate erupted Monday as the Senate Committee on Family Services began
reviewing legislation to alter the mission and powers of Child Protective
Services. Anderson said the drugging of children, especially with Ritalin,
"has been a problem for years."
"Most of the kids who committed these Columbine-type crimes were kids on
those kids of drugs," he said, citing the 1999 shooting at a Colorado high
school by two teens that left 20 students dead.
But Anderson parents have been threatened with CPS intervention -- and
potential charges of abuse if they do not put their children on certain
drugs.
Cannell said Ritalin is not the issue. He said he fears that parents will
take their children off drugs that they need to survive.
He said the list of what are considered psychiatric drugs which would be
covered by the proposal includes anti-convulsants which are used to treat
seizures.
"If you stop the medicines suddenly, as soon as the levels fall within 12
to 24 hours a child starts having convulsions," he said. "If they convulse
more than 20 minutes they get brain damage."
He also said that some children who are taking medications to deal with
manic depression would be at physical risk if the drugs are suddenly
withdrawn.
Sen. Peter Rios, D-Dudleyville, is seeking to craft a compromise: Keep CPS
out of the picture unless withholding a medication "causes substantial risk
of harm to the child's health or welfare."
Anderson said that's no compromise at all as it still lets the CPS
caseworker make that call. He said the only thing that would make it
acceptable would be if the parent first had the opportunity to get a second
opinion from another doctor.
Cannell said these second opinions on psychiatric issues sometimes can take
weeks, all the time leaving the child without needed medications. Anderson
responded that there would be "only one case in 10 billion" where a second
opinion might endanger the child's health.
According to Cannell the issue is being pushed largely by members of the
Church of Scientology who "dislike any kind of psychiatry or psychology."
Anderson, however, said the issue is more basic.
"We're losing parental rights to decide medical choices for your children,"
he said. "I wouldn't want to give that up.

Interfaith leaders offer thanks at event
Annual event held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mission San Jose
By Melissa Evans, STAFF WRITER
FREMONT -- In the languages of 11 religious traditions, the interfaith
community offered a collective thanks Wednesday evening for the richness of
this area's diversity.
"In the world of spirit and heaven, the founders of the world's major
religions and saints sit at a common table and express their gratitude by
loving one another," said the Rev. Ken Hardman, representing the
Unification Church at the Tri-City area's annual Interfaith Thanksgiving
Service.
These founders, he said, sit as "brothers and sisters and have no barriers
between them because they recognize that you are our common and loving
parent, the creator of all, and we are brothers are sisters."
Sponsored by the Tri-City Ministerial Association, an interfaith group,
this year's event was held for the first time at St. Joseph's Catholic
Church in Mission San Jose.
Organizers chose a larger venue to accommodate the range of performers,
which included Taiwanese dancers -- who performed a "Manohra" dance based
on a story from their culture -- and Sikh musicians, who thumbed a sitar, a
guitar-like instrument, and a tabla, which is similar to a drum.
Other religions represented were Protestant Christian, Catholic, Muslim,
Jewish, Jainism, Quaker, Hindu, Unitarian Universalist, Zoroastrian and
Baha'i.
This year's service also included a segment from the American Indian
tradition. Ohlone descendants Andy Galvan and his father, Felipe Galvan,
led a prayer honoring the gifts that each direction brings.
The 200 people who attended bowed first to the east -- the direction "from
which the new day comes into the world," Galvan said. It is considered in
the Indian tradition to be a direction symbolizing innocence, spontaneity,
joy and "the capacity to believe in the unseen."
Attendees also bowed to the south -- which symbolizes summer, fullness and
youth; to the west -- the direction where darkness arises, symbolizing the
unknown, and dreams; and to the north -- the direction of winter, the
"dawning place of true wisdom."
Leaders of each city -- Fremont Mayor Gus Morrison, Union City Mayor Mark
Green and Newark Vice Mayor Albert Torrico -- also offered their personal
reasons for thanks.
Green said he is grateful to live in a country like the United States,
"where an event like this can take place. ... This is the most tolerant
place on earth."
Attendees also gave tangible thanks in an offering that will benefit the
Tri-City League of Volunteers, the organization sponsoring a free
Thanksgiving meal today in Newark.
"Assist us to be a lamp unto them that walk in darkness, a joy to the
sorrowful, a sea for the thirsty and a haven for the distressed," prayed
Colleen Weiler of the Baha'i faith.
"And help us to always let integrity and uprightness distinguish all our
acts offered in your name."

U.N. office on interfaith dialogue eyed
By David R. Sands
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
The Philippines has proposed a new office at the United Nations to
promote understanding and cooperation among the world's leading religions.
A draft resolution calls on the United Nations to establish an
"open-ended working group to examine the contributions of interreligious
dialogue and cooperation in strengthening the capacity of the United
Nations to promote international peace and harmony."
The resolution, introduced earlier this month, recommends that the
working group explore a permanent "mechanism" at the United Nations to
promote interfaith cooperation.
Philippine diplomats say they will press for a modified version of the
interfaith proposal during the current session of the U.N. General
Assembly, which continues through next fall.
Bayani S. Mercado, deputy permanent representative of the Philippines,
said in a speech Nov. 10 to the General Assembly that cooperation among the
world's major faiths could promote a culture of peace.
"The potential of interreligious dialogue and cooperation should be
harnessed not just at the national and regional level, but more so at the
international level," he said.
Philippine officials proposed the idea in May when Philippines
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo visited the United States. President Bush
is said to have expressed interest, and National Security Council aides
were briefed on the proposal, United Press International reported.
A State Department official, speaking on background, said the Bush
administration regards it as "premature" to take a formal position while
the language of the draft resolution is being debated. A private U.S.
analysis, forwarded to the Philippine government, cautioned that an
interfaith agency could "dilute" the push for human rights by emphasizing
cultural differences, not minimizing them.
Jose de Venecia, speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives and
a strong supporter of the U.N. interfaith effort, said in September that
the proposed new agency "has become a major objective of Philippine foreign
policy" to begin "the reconciliation of civilizations."
As a predominantly Catholic country with sizable Muslim and Protestant
minorities, the Philippines is anxious to avert a "clash of civilizations"
between the Islamic world and the West.
Mr. de Venecia said the idea has been endorsed by the Organization of
the Islamic Conference and the African Union, as well as by Iranian
President Mohammed Khatami, a Shi'ite Muslim cleric.
The proposal closely tracks a proposal by the Interreligious and
International Federation for World Peace, an organization founded by the
Rev. Sun Myung Moon of the Unification Church. Rev. Moon is the founder of
News World Communications Inc., publishers of The Washington Times.
"Serious consideration should be given to forming a religious assembly
or council of religious representatives within the structure of the United
Nations," Rev. Moon said in an April 2000 address.
That proposal calls for U.N. member states to send to New York a second
"religious ambassador," who would serve on an "interfaith senate" within
the U.N. governing structure.
Philippine officials say they are familiar with the federation
proposal, but that their plan is independent and differs in some ways.
Efforts to build a interfaith presence inside the U.N. structure date
from the founding of the world body at the end of World War II, but both
sides have been wary of the religious-secular divide.
The Soviet Union and other former communist states, then officially
atheistic, strongly opposed the idea during the Cold War. Some religious
figures questioned whether a formal U.N. role would compromise their
independence and dilute their various faiths.
A gathering of 1,000 religious leaders in August 2000 at U.N.
headquarters in New York created a new interfaith World Council of
Religious Leaders. The council's charter, adopted in Bangkok in 2002, said
the body would be independent and "available as a resource" to the United
Nations and other national and international bodies "dedicated to promoting
world peace, harmony, tolerance, mutual respect among humans and social and
economic justice."

Land deal advances
By ROBERT MARCHANT
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: November 25, 2003)
The creation of a large new park in Greenburgh took a major step forward
last night with the authorization by the Town Board to spend $3.75 million
to purchase the land off Taxter Ridge.
The board voted unanimously to buy the land, sparking applause from 30
people who came to Town Hall to support the measure. The deal to buy 183
acres of woodland in the East Irvington section of town from the
Unification Church of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon could be sealed early next
year, when New York state and Westchester County are expected to pay out
equal thirds of the roughly $12 million purchase price.
Residents urged the board to buy the land -- despite criticism from some
quarters that the process behind the negotiations was faulty and that
Greenburgh's incorporated villages were not paying any money toward the
purchase.
"I'm no big fan of taxes," said a town resident, Roger Brooks. "But I know
we have a unique prospect here. The benefits will flow almost entirely to
the residents of the town of Greenburgh, and this is a now-or-never
opportunity. To let this opportunity slip away would be an extraordinary
case of being penny-wise and pound-foolish."
Another resident, Don Siegel, said, "The acquisition isn't just for the
people near Taxter Ridge. It's for everyone in Greenburgh."
Robert Bernstein, a neighborhood leader who has faulted the land deal for
letting the villages in Greenburgh -- Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry,
Irvington, Tarrytown, Elmsford and Ardsley -- avoid paying anything for
Taxter Ridge, reiterated his calls for more time to discuss and analyze the
land deal. But the Town Board declined and voted to authorize the spending.
A separate 17 acres of Unification Church land within the borders of
Tarrytown was not covered by the approvals last night. They will be the
subject of a separate acquisition attempt by the village of Tarrytown in
the future.
One board member, Steve Bass, said he would like to revisit the issue of
tax burdens shared by the town and the villages in the future, but the
Taxter Ridge land deal needed prompt approvals and he voted "yes" to the
spending.
Town Supervisor Paul Feiner called the Taxter Ridge a "coup for the town"
and said the town would benefit for generations to come with the extra
parkland. The Unification Church, which once considered building a
university there, owned the land for more than 20 years and considered
selling it to a commercial developer before opening talks for public
acquisition.

Wayward archbishop flees Rome
By Desmond O'Grady in Rome
November 19, 2003
Archbishop Emmanuel Milingo, who shocked the Vatican by marrying a member
of the Moonie sect but then repented, has absconded again.
Two weeks ago the controversial Zambian faith healer left Zagarolo near
Rome, where he had been confined to a religious community, and went to stay
with a female painter friend, Alba Vitali, in Lecco, Lombardy.
Ms Vitali said by phone: "Archbishop Milingo is not returning to Rome
because the Vatican never cared about him nor provided proper treatment. In
future he will operate freely in Lombardy."
At present, she said, the archbishop was in Lecco hospital for a check-up,
guarded by police.
"He was a prisoner at Zagarolo," Ms Vitali said, "even though it was his
property rather than being that of the Vatican. He's not going back to
Rome, where too many crimes are committed in the shadow of the Pope."
The Vatican press office said it had nothing to say about Archbishop
Milingo.
In 1983 the archbishop was removed from Zambia because he performed
"ambiguous" exorcisms and faith-healing ceremonies and incorporated tribal
customs in the Mass.
He was given a sinecure in the Vatican with the title of Archbishop
Emeritus of Lusaka. He continued his exorcisms and public healing
ceremonies, despite the disapproval of several bishops.
In 2001, Archbishop Milingo married Maria Sung in a collective ceremony in
a New York hotel.
But after a meeting with the Pope he renounced the marriage.
After his return to Rome, Archbishop Milingo had priest "minders" at
Zagarolo. He was not allowed to perform public healing ceremonies, nor even
to make telephone calls.

Roh Campaign Funds Said Filtered Through Alumnus
by Heo Yong-beom (heo@...)
Grand National Party (GNP) Assemblyman Lee Sung-hun said Monday that former
Cheong Wa Dae assistant Choi Do-sul received W90 billion from companies and
the funds were managed by Lee Young-roh, a high-school alumnus of President
Roh Moo-hyun.
Lee claimed during a meeting with Justice Minister Kang Kum-sil at the
National Assembly's Budget and Finance Committee that the independent council
questioned Choi's wife in August, and that Choi received a total of W90
billion from companies.
Justice Minister Kang said that Choi's wife was investigated in October
after Choi's bank accounts were traced. Kang, however, denied that Choi's
wife said her husband received W90 billion.
Ahn Dae-hee, the head of the Supreme Public Prosecutors Central Investigation
Division, also said that Choi's wife was called in by the special council's
office twice last month for questioning on the W1.1 billion Choi took from the
SK group. Ahn denied that they investigated Choi's wife in August and said
that he had no knowledge of the rumor that Choi received tens of billions
of won in additional payments.
The companies suspected of giving the money to Choi also denied all the
allegations. A company related to the Unification Church's branch of
the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification said the rumor was
groundless.
The GNP and the Millennium Democratic Party, on the other hand, confirmed
that they would vote in favor of the special prosecutors law with two thirds
of the assemblymen likely to approve the measure, if Roh rejects the special
council law to investigate his acquaintances.

Troublesome archbishop runs a little further from grace
November 17, 2003
A Zambian cleric continues to prove difficult for the Vatican, writes
Desmond O'Grady in Rome.
Archbishop Emanuel Milingo has done it again: run off with a woman. Vatican
sources say that the Zambian archbishop, who has been under "monastery
arrest" since returning from marriage to a Korean member of the Moonie
sect, has absconded again.
He is reported to have fled from a religious community at Zagarolo, near
Rome, to Lecco, north Italy, with a female painter, Alba Vitali. He has
long known the painter - she did his portrait before the marriage. It is
believed that she is convinced he needs a more congenial atmosphere than at
Zagarolo, and also medical care.
The Vatican press office said it had nothing to say about Archbishop
Milingo. His actions are a total surprise because only recently he received
Vatican approval to visit Zambia early next year. He had complained
publicly about the delay in granting this permission, which required the
approval of other Zambian bishops and the Vatican representative there.
In 1983 Archbishop Milingo was removed from Zambia because he performed
ambiguous exorcisms and faith-healing ceremonies and incorporated tribal
customs in the Mass. He was given a sinecure in the Vatican with the title
of archbishop emeritus of Lusaka. He continued his exorcisms and public
healing ceremonies in Italy despite the disapproval of several bishops.
His critics claimed his performances were tinged with witchcraft but he was
convinced that he had a Christian mission and was frustrated by the
hostility towards him.
On May 27, 2001, Archbishop Milingo shocked the Vatican by marrying a
member of the Moonies in a collective ceremony in a New York hotel. He wore
a tuxedo for the occasion and kissed the bride, a 42-year-old divorcee.
They went to Korea for some weeks and then lived in New York but Vatican
emissaries convinced him to return to Rome. After a meeting with the Pope
he renounced the marriage. He explained that he had been frustrated in Rome
and agreed to Reverend Sun Myung Moon's condition that he had to marry to
be able to preach in venues arranged by the Moonies.
"I didn't know what I was getting myself into," he said about the marriage
in a book, Fished From The Mud, published last year. "Only later did I
understand the wedding was a way for them (the Unification Church founded
by Moon) to get total control over me."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Josette Shiner will
press China to crack down on illegal copying of U.S. products and to open
its market to more U.S. farm goods during a visit this week, U.S. trade
officials said Sunday.
"America's manufacturers, entertainers, engineers and scientists continue
to lead the world in innovation and creativity. It is absolutely critical
that their legal rights to their inventions, brand names and product
reputations are respected and protected by our trading partners," Shiner
said in a statement.
The trip is Shiner's third to the region in the past five weeks and comes
as the Bush administration is under pressure to trim the United States'
huge trade deficit with China, which totaled a record $103 billion last
year and is projected to hit $120 billion this year.
U.S. officials have identified intellectual property rights as an area
where the United States could take action against China at the World Trade
Organization.
The U.S. Trade Representative's office said Shiner was leading two separate
delegations to Beijing - one focused specifically on copyright, patent and
trademark issues and another on the overall trade relationship.
"We will be pressing the range of concerns we have with China's
restrictions on our businesses' access to the China market," Shiner said.
"China is already our sixth largest export market, but we still have a long
way to go before we can be confident that our manufacturers and farmers
face a level playing field in China."
The United States has a variety of concerns with China's unpredictable and
inconsistent treatment of U.S. agricultural goods, including soybeans,
cotton, wheat and other commodities, incomplete fulfillment of China's WTO
commitments on market access for service industries, and discriminatory tax
policies which disadvantage American exports to China, among other matters,
USTR said.

Tragic Love Story of Giselle Springs to Stage
By Yoon Ja-young
Staff Reporter
The Universal Ballet will present one of the most popular pieces of 19th
Century Romantic Ballet, "Giselle," here in Seoul later this month.
The ballet is all about frail and feminine beauty, showcasing ballerinas in
white fluffy tutus.
"Giselle" was written by the French poet Theophile Gautier, who got inspiration
from Heinrich Heine's story of German legends. Choreographed by Jean Coralli
and Jules Parrot and accompanied by Adolphe Charles Adam's music, it rose
to become a masterpiece of the time almost as soon as it premiered at the
Teatre de L'Academie Royale in Paris in 1842.
Giselle, a beautiful innocent maiden of a country vineyard along the Rhein
River, falls in love with Count Albrecht, who disguises himself as an ordinary
peasant to woo her. But Hilarion, the village gamekeeper desperately seeking
her love, is jealous and reveals the Count's true identity and the fact
that he is already betrothed to a princess. Shocked by the discovery and
driven into madness, Giselle's character cannot endure the pain and dies of
sorrow. The pinnacle of the tragedy, thus, comes in the very first act.
In the second act, Giselle turns into a vengeful ghost -- called a "wili"
-- of maiden who dies before her wedding. Wilis seek revenge by attracting
men into the woods at night and making them dance to their exhaustion and
eventual death. Prince Albrecht, who comes to visit Giselle's grave at night,
becomes the next victim for the wilis, but Giselle's original character is
still alive in one of the wilis. She, of course, is still in love with him
and tries to save him from the other wilis. But in doing so, she sacrifices
herself to the dawn.
The score of wilis in white tutu, rising from the graveyard and dancing out
the rage of death in moonlight, is an unforgettable scene for ballet lovers.
Giselle is admired not only by the audiences that have come to love it,
but also by the ballerinas who compete strenuously for the privilege to play
the part. Three ballerinas, who will take turns dancing the main role, are
competing to surpass the success of Moon Hoon-sook, who drew seven curtain
calls while performing Giselle on Russia's Kirov Theater stage in 1989. Kim
Se-youn is a talented dancer who debuted as Giselle at the troupe's tour
in Europe. She is pitted against Hwang Hye-min, the heroine of last year's
"Sleeping Beauty," and Yoo Nan-hee, a rising star who studied at Baganova
Academy in Russia.
"Giselle" will be presented at the Little Angels Performing Arts Center in
Seoul from Nov. 20 to Nov. 23. For tickets, priced from 20,000 won to 50,000
won, go to www.ticketlink.co.kr or call 1588-7890. For more information,

was going to attack the democratic West.
This was silly. A dictator attacks if he considers his military power
superior to his opponents. Hitler regarded his armed forces as superior to
those of France, which he attacked, and then, in 1941, to those of Russia,
whose initial armed forces he simply annihilated.
On the other hand, the U.S. nuclear weapons made Stalin defenseless till
1949, and then militarily inferior since he did not have a sufficient
trans-Atlantic bomber force to retaliate in kind in case of a U.S. nuclear
attack.
It was only at the end of the 1960s that there came a U.S.-Soviet nuclear
equilibrium or stalemate, known as Mutual Assured Destruction. If attacked
by U.S. bombers, Soviet Russia would have retaliated by nuclear missiles,
which the U.S. nuclear attack would not be able to destroy because they
were in submarines deep under water, or in fortifications deep in the
ground.
Yet the U.S. political establishment (such as Senator and then President
Kennedy during his election campaign and early in his presidency)
proclaimed that Soviet Russia was after world domination and was about to
attack the United States. The Cold War is how that groundless expectation
of a Soviet war for world domination was called.
In the 1970s and in the 1980s Brezhnev and his successors, including
Gorbachev, were developing post-nuclear superweapons to overcome Mutual
Assured Destruction by being able to destroy the Western means of nuclear
retaliation and thus establish world domination with the ultimatum to the
West to surrender or be annihilated.
But Senator and then President Kennedy's totally unfounded yet vehement
certainty up to the early 1960s that Soviet Russia was about to attack the
West changed into the totally unfounded yet deeply felt certainty that
while Stalin was a monster with respect to his own people and hence was
about to attack the West, no one could suspect of such a sinister design
that charming Nobel Peace Prize winner Gorbachev, a personal friend of the
Conservative British Prime Minister Thatcher and the Republican U.S.
President Bush Sr.
Even when a scientist of Gorbachev's giant project of post-nuclear
superweapons defected and told the top secret truth to the British
Intelligence Service and the CIA, Thatcher and Bush Sr. did not want to
make it public and thus upset their darling Gorbie.
It was only when, in 1992, the newly elected President Yeltsin of Russia
opened to public inspection the giant bioweapons section of the former
Soviet development of post-nuclear superweapons that the leaders of the
English-speaking countries were compelled to admit the truth of what I and
some other emigres had been saying for 20 years.
When we came to New York in 1972 and I told the New York Times about the
Soviet development of post-nuclear superweapons, the reaction was Oh, you
are talking the Cold War, which was over long ago!
I would tell those who reacted in this way that they had a view of
geostrategic history upside down and backward: The Cold War was a
much-ado-about-nothing fantasy.
It is only now that the West is becoming mortally endangered and may be
attacked or forced to surrender if the Soviet rulers have obtained their
coveted post-nuclear superweapons, able to destroy the Western means of
nuclear retaliation. But the West refuses to notice the mortal danger,
while about ten years ago President Kennedy was still predicting a Soviet
attack daily and hourly, though in 1963 he himself declared that all such
predictions had been nonsense!
I founded in 1978 the Center for the Survival of Western Democracies, a
not-for-profit corporation with an advisory board including some 20
world-renowned intellectuals, writers, philosophers, public figures,
top-ranking military officers and even one retired senior analyst of the
CIA, a friend of mine since 1972.
Though the prevailing conformity was the belief that the Soviet rulers mean
peace (recall dear Gorbie, a Nobel Peace Prize winner!), the groups
opposing this conformity were strong, and we had no lack of grants and of
public attention at universities and in the media. This opposition crossed
all party lines.
Thus, I lectured at Tom Bolans East Side Conservative Club, the advisory
board of which Tom had made me a member (though I told him that I am not a
conservative or a liberal or any other partisan). I also lectured to the
Young Socialists USA, who welcomed my message as much as did the East Side
Conservative Club.
The Rev. Moon's Unification Church launched in the early 1980s a daily
devoted to the real Soviet geostrategic threat, and published my column.
The two Jewish magazines Commentary and Midstream published my articles on
the same unpopular subject. Meanwhile, in 1986 it became clear from the
Chinese open press that the rulers of China had founded Project 863 for the
development of post-nuclear superweapons in seven fields (such as genetic
engineering). Thus China, the biggest dictatorship in the past 100 years,
was moving into the geostrategic place of pre-1991 Russia.
But there are differences, of course. While the leaders of the Western
countries have treated the Chinese autocrats in the past 10 years as
lovingly as Thatcher and Bush Sr. treated dear Gorbie, there are no
pro-defense opposition groups that would be as focused on the current
geostrategic danger as influential and politically diverse as were the East
Side Conservative Club, Young Socialists, USA, the Rev. Moon's Unification
Church or Commentary and Midstream magazines.
The population of China exceeds that of the United States by about four
times, and China graduates 600,000 scientists and engineers a year, four
times as many as does the United States.
The Chinese capitalism is a powerful tool to advance the Chinese
(Communist!) rulers world domination. Thus, the U.S. corporations of
geostrategic importance move to China in search of cheap labor, and the
Chinese corporations, controlled by the rulers of China, induce them to do
so and burrow into the deepest entrails of Western economy, science and
technology.
The value of Chinese goods and services sold in the United States exceeds
that of U.S. goods and services sold in China by more than $100 billion a
year, much of which the rulers of China can spend on the development of
post-nuclear superweapons.
We have written a proposal soliciting tax-deductible grants to set up under
the auspices of our not-for-profit Center for the Survival of Western
Democracies, Inc., a unique Chinese geostrategic research institute
employing the most sophisticated Chinese scientists, scholars and thinkers
from among the Chinese emigre dissidents in the United States.
Our purpose is to convince the public that China is a geostrategic
successor to the Russia of Gorbachev and that the Chinese rulers hope to
succeed where dear Gorbie failed and was exposed by President Yeltsin in
1992.

What's next
The Greenburgh Town Board is to vote
tomorrow on the proposed Taxter Ridge
land purchase. The meeting starts at
7:15 p.m. at Town Hall, 177 Hillside
Ave.
Greenburgh land deal
By ROBERT MARCHANT
THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: November 11, 2003)
The Greenburgh Town Board is planning to vote tomorrow on the largest land
purchase in its history, a proposal to turn 183 acres of rolling woodlands
in East Irvington into a park.
The board is looking to approve just under $4 million to fund its portion
of the land's purchase. The funding would be split three ways, with
Westchester County and New York state paying about $4 million each for a
total outlay of roughly $12 million. The Westchester County Board of
Legislators received the funding request yesterday. The land is being
bought from the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church.
Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner is calling the planned purchase an
important conservation measure that will prevent further development in
town and help preserve the local environment. Persistent criticism about
the deal, however, has been voiced about the town's handling of the
purchase during the recent election season.
Feiner said the deal was a good one for the town. "We're paying 33 cents on
the dollar. It's a steal for the town," he said. "If it's developed, it
will diminish the quality of life for the whole town."
James Lasser, who ran unsuccessfully for the post of town supervisor in
last week's election, said the town had not provided enough information
about the terms of the deal for the public to make an informed choice.
"They have not disclosed the terms of the agreement," he said. "It's the
biggest land purchase in town history, but there are enough questions about
it that it's an outrage," he said.
Feiner said the parties involved, including the Trust for Public Land, a
nonprofit preservation group that arranged the terms of the contract, had
worked out good terms for the public.
"We did our homework, and the Trust for Public Land did a good job," he
said. "You can always nit-pick and find reasons why things shouldn't
happen."
Feiner said the purchase of Taxter Ridge was a prominent election issue,
and if the public were dissatisfied with it, town voters would have made it
clear at the polls.
An East Irvington neighborhood leader, Danny Gold, said he believed the
parkland purchase would go through after years of discussion. "There have
been a lot of ups and downs, but it looks extremely positive," he said,
"It's a pretty low cost to preserve an important piece of property." He
said Westchester County's planning staff had put the land deal through "a
very rigorous process" before sending it to the county Legislature.
The land has been owned for more than 20 years by the Unification Church,
which once envisioned building a university at the site.
The church had earlier discussed plans for developing the site with housing
and a golf course before opening talks for public acquisition.
The town administration projected a $15 annual increase in the property tax
rate for an average homeowner whose property is assessed at $15,000.

United Press International
UPI announces top editors
Published 11/10/2003 1:54 PM
WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- United Press International announced Monday
a new editorial management team dedicated to building and expanding the
worldwide news and analysis agency.
Michael J. Marshall, executive editor of The World and I magazine, was named
editor in chief of UPI's worldwide editorial operations.
Martin Walker, UPI's chief international correspondent for the past two years,
was appointed editor of UPI's English-language operations.
Marshall, a veteran journalist with more than 25 years of international
experience, has been with the monthly magazine since it began in 1986. As
executive editor, Marshall steered The World and I into a multi-faceted
educational publication that has embraced the arts, science, current affairs
and scholarship.
Marshall also is executive director of the World Media Association, which
provides a forum for media professionals and opinion leaders to advance
journalistic ethics.
Dr. Chung Hwan Kwak, president and chief executive officer of UPI, said
Marshall "joins with a mandate to further expand our global reach, and work
together with other members of the News World family in expanding UPI's
product offerings. UPI will continue to serve as one of News World's major
distribution platforms for its news, information, and analysis products."
News World Communications Inc., a global media company founded by the Rev.
Sun Myung Moon, owns UPI and publishes The World and I. It also publishes
The Washington Times, and other newspapers and magazines in more than 20
countries. Moon also founded the World Media Association.
Walker, an award-winning foreign correspondent whose books have been translated
into 11 languages, is an expert on U.S. foreign policy and international
affairs. He spent 25 years at Britain's The Guardian newspaper as bureau
chief in Moscow, Washington and the European Union. Walker served as a
public policy fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
in Washington and is a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute at the
New School in New York City. His latest novel, "The Caves of Perigord," was
published last year and reached No. 8 on the Washington Post best-seller list.
"I am delighted that Michael and Martin have agreed to lead UPI's editorial
operations at this most important time in the company's 96-year history," Kwak
said. "Their journalistic reputations embody the long and proud commitment
this company has made to press freedom and editorial excellence. Both men
are leaders in their field, with international reputations.
"I am truly confident that the bold new vision for UPI and its role in the
News World family of publications is in the best of hands," he said.
Arnaud de Borchgrave, UPI editor at large, said Marshall "combines scholarly
erudition with journalistic instincts and I look forward to working with
him on many important projects to synergize a multi-faceted, transnational
organization where I started my career when it was still UP (United Press)."
De Borchgrave had been UPI's interim editor in chief since August, following
the resignation of John O'Sullivan, who left UPI to become editor of The
National Interest policy magazine.
De Borchgrave said Walker "is one of the very best journalists I have had the
good fortune of knowing in any country since the early 1980s. He brings immense
knowledge and intellectual depth to a profession with a dearth of such talent."

Father is calling the Fourth Israel to make an historic pilgrimage
Rev. Michael Jenkins
MWJenk@...
Sunday, November 09, 2003
Dear Family,
Rev. Sun Jo Hwang, our international President, has been calling Dr. Yang
daily. Father's main topic: We are going to rally millions in the Holy
Land. World mobilization must take place. We will see the walls fall down
before our eyes. He asked Rev. Hwang how many could come from Korea. Rev.
Hwang reported that they will mobilize everyone but the flights to Israel
are limited. Father's response: fly to a location in Europe or the Middle
East or anywhere and take buses in. Now is the time for total committment
and action. Nothing should stop us.
Please prepare your heart as the true believers of the fourth Israel. We
must have a mind and heart that is greater than that of our predecessors (The
Israelites at the time of Moses). We must clearly understand the historical
value of our role and position in history at this time. The Fourth Israel
has been established. Now we must respond with our hearts.
Israel is making incredible preparations. The Muslim, Jewish and Christian
leaders are feeling that anything is possible now. It is time for absolute
faith, absolute love and absolute obedience.
Already over 80 clergy have responded that they want to go on December 22nd -
three days before Christmas - why - because the world situation is absolutely
urgent. We must act now.
Rise America. Father is expecting 2400 to come from America like we did in the
Cheon Il Guk Mobilization. I will be leading a task force of 80 members and
40 clergy from December first. Volunteers are welcome. They must be members
who know how to communicate well with religious leaders and who have a good
record of taking care of the clergy in America. The main conditions we are
setting for victory are the 40 day prayer condition, November 1 - December
10th, the signature campaign to get 1200 clergy to affirm the taking down
of the cross and the November 17th conference in New York for theologians
and religious leaders.
We will see the glory of the Lord revealed. God is with us. Be strong and
of good courage.
Victory for the Parents of Heaven, Earth and Mankind.
Thanks America

Let Us Perfect the Peace Kingdom
Through the Peace United Nations
Keynote Address
Rev. Sun Myung Moon
Inaugural Assembly of the Headquarters of the
Interreligious and International Peace Council (IIPC)
October 15, 2003
Seoul, Korea
Respected and distinguished guests:
Wherever we look today -- ahead or behind, left or right, to the east or west,
south or north -- we see a world of hopelessness filled with war and disease,
racial conflict and religious struggle, and immorality and corruption. With
more than 200 countries, large and small, scattered across the five oceans and
six continents of the world, and struggling against each other, which country
could possibly solve the problems humanity faces today? What has happened
to the United Nations, which set out some fifty years ago as a model for
peaceful world governance? It has become a forum only for people suffering
from extreme selfishness who are slaves to political power relationships and
are frantically pursuing the interests of their own countries. It has become
so crippled that it is incapable of taking even one step forward. It is not
just incapable of bringing about world peace; the United Nations can neither
present solutions nor offer hope in response to the totally unpredictable
situations confronting the world today.
Ladies and gentlemen, as I stand here today, my heart is filled with
excitement and inspiration. Let us all first give thanks to God. A new day
of hope is dawning for humanity. The dawning of the peaceful Cheon Il Guk
1 (God's Kingdom), where His grace and love will shine on all the world,
is being announced with a great cry that is shaking the Earth to its core.
Today, I would like to convey to you one part of God's Word for all people
living in this age, by speaking on the topic, "Let Us Perfect the Peace
Kingdom through the Peace United Nations." 2
Humankind at the Meeting Point of Good and Evil
Over six billion people are living in the world today, but no one has
clear knowledge about the origin of humankind. History began through some
indistinct process -- whether it was good or bad, we don't know. That history
has continued to the point where today the world's population exceeds
six billion. Since the origin and process are unclear, the end can only
be unclear as well. Thus, in the world today, we see continuous disorder
and confusion. If humanity had found the correct path in the beginning,
we would have traveled on a one-way path to the Kingdom of God on earth
and in heaven, without any confusion or disorder. The fate of humankind,
after losing sight of this one-way path as a result of the Fall, however,
has been to drift down the river of history as something good at times while
evil at other times, rising at times while falling at other times.
Why would a path that human beings traveled in goodness suddenly start to
go downhill? We did not want to go downhill, yet went down nevertheless.
This is the issue. We wanted goodness to continue, but we went down. Why
would goodness decline? When human life violates the absolute, fundamental
principles of goodness, it will deteriorate. What does this mean? It
indicates an intersection of good and evil. All kings and presidents in
this world live without any knowledge of when their sovereignty will rise
or fall. All sovereigns want things to be good forever. Any sovereign who is
not in harmony with or aligned with the standard of true goodness, however,
will certainly be defeated and perish.
Who, then, is in charge of good and evil? We know that even the most powerful
royal dynasty cannot influence good and evil by its supremacy. In other words,
no sovereign, on his or her own, can adjust good and evil according to his
or her own wishes. We cannot deny that good and evil are determined by some
unseen power lying in the background.
Each nation has its own laws. National laws exist to establish goodness.
Each nation's constitution was enacted for the purpose of safeguarding
goodness, and there are no laws that were established for the purpose of
destroying goodness. That is why anyone who breaks a nation's laws is sent
to prison. The problem, though, is that in any given country the standard
of goodness can be applied incorrectly, depending on the temperament of the
sovereign. That is the reason that humankind has always languished at the
crossroads of two paths until this day, with one path leading to prosperity
and the other to ruin.
The Universe Protects United Subject and Object Partners
Human beings have a dual structure. The mind is a "positive" (plus)
standing on the side of Heaven, and the body is a "negative" (minus)
standing on the side of Satan. Mind and body were originally intended to
form a complete oneness automatically, but this did not happen because of
the Fall of our original ancestors. Instead, the body attempted to take the
position of another positive, and this brought mind and body into mutual
contradiction. Ultimately, this led to Satan conquering the human body. By
means of the Fall, Satan took the bond of love, connected humanity to the
satanic lineage, and let human beings multiply themselves. This is the
problem. This struggle between mind and body has become a chronic ailment
more terrible than cancer or AIDS. That is why we must, no matter what the
cost, push the body back into the position of negative. By the law of the
universe, poles with the same charge repel each other. When a pair of subject
and object partners forms a complete oneness, however, they receive heavenly
fortune and the universe automatically protects them.
An Absolute Subject Entity Gives Rise to an Absolute Partner
If there is an absolute subject entity, an absolutely objective entity that
is a partner to that subject entity, will come into being. This can be seen in
the course of my life. America and the entire world stood in opposition to my
life as absolute subject, which began when I received Heaven's command. Yet,
the side that struck the absolute subject eventually became the negative
realm and was absorbed. This is because anyone who receives opposition while
standing on the side of goodness is protected by his or her surroundings,
that is, the universe. It is because I knew this principle with certainty
that I was able to fight and win in the struggles involving individuals,
the struggles involving nations, and the struggles involving the world. We
see in history that God always proceeded in the direction consistent with
fundamental principles, that is, toward the purpose of true love, but that the
Devil has used forces opposed to this to establish himself as a destructive
enemy power. Satan struck the first blow by causing the first human ancestors
to commit the Fall, and he has come to control families, tribes, nations, and
the world. The first people to go to hell were the first ancestors of humanity,
Adam and Eve. They could not enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Please understand
that the created world first came to be occupied by the satanic realm.
What, then, is the Devil? He is a being who attempts to take God's people,
make them his own and control them. He is a shameless criminal who kidnapped
someone else's child, turned that child into his own, and then tried to
claim legitimate ownership of that child. Now he is worried that all his
sin may be exposed and that he will lose everything, so he sits blocking
the plans for the future that God, the author of Creation, is being led by
His conscience to carry out. In so doing he is blocking the liberation of
God and humanity. He has occupied the bodies of all human beings, and has
completely spoiled love, which God considers of such importance that He
treats it as His first ideal. The free sex that you see in the world today
is an example of this. The Devil creates confusion on the path of love,
and prevents us from exercising total control over our consciences. These
are two of Satan's strategies and tactics.
Ladies and gentlemen, free sex is Satan's trap. People in the world who
have a lot of money are falling into the trap Satan dug for them because of
their riches. These people enjoy sensual pleasures, but they are dying. To
establish his defensive line, Satan gives material blessings to evil people,
so that they can never escape from the quagmire of moral decadence. You need
to understand that alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse and free sex are Satan's
four main weapons. Satan uses these to put people into a stupor of carnal
satisfaction, and then he has them board the train to hell. This is the
reason I teach that people must stop this tragic advance into hell, become
true people who are not accused by their own consciences, and return to the
life of true love. This is the only way that people can make their mind and
body one and board the train to heaven.
Despite indescribable opposition and persecution, I have lived my life of more
than 80 years walking the path of sacrifice, at times at the risk of death,
to realize peace through the recovery of true love. I have never faltered,
not even for a moment. Even when Satan threatened to kill me, I maintained
an absolute "plus" position and overcame everything. This made it possible
for me to acquire the absolute "minus." In a word, it has been a life of
following the original fundamental principles of Creation.
The Absolute Necessity of True Parents
I have lived according to the fundamental laws of the universe. I am a
single-minded man who has walked Heaven's path, absolutely refusing to
compromise even in the midst of the worst hardship and adversity. I could
do this, because I knew for a certainty from the outset that when I have
followed this path to the position of the victor, God and all of creation
will greet me with joyful cheers.
Satan has always mocked Heaven and me, and boasted of his domain of power:
"My weapons will never rust. Even the omniscient and omnipotent Creator
God cannot defeat me in this fight. See how the side that is focused on the
body completely tramples the conscience. Love has been completely degraded,
just as I planned. Has this not become a world of fun, where grandfathers
pair with granddaughters and sons with mothers? How can such a world of evil
ever be reestablished as God's ideal world? Who could accomplish such a task?"
God, though, has shouted back in this way: "Just a moment, Satan! Isn't it
true that through the active work of Rev. Moon, the True Parent, true love's
realm of influence in the earthly world is increasing? The True Parent is
the owner of true love. He is the king of true love. Satan, is it not true
that you are helpless in the presence of true love?"
Ladies and gentlemen, how are we to restore true love? This is the
responsibility of the True Parent. The True Parent must establish the
original world where the conscience is always victorious, that is, the
world of absolute goodness that is most treasured by humanity. The secret
for accomplishing this is simple. When faced with True Parents, true love,
true life, and true lineage, the false parent, Satan, is completely helpless,
no matter how much he may kick and struggle. To align ourselves completely
with God's Will, God and human beings must form eternal relationships as
subject and object partners, centered on true love. Satan has no way to wedge
himself into such eternal relationships. When you begin to live by altruistic
true love, you will receive the Holy Marriage Blessing and be connected to
the true lineage. Then your eternal life will be assured. True love, true
life, and true lineage will expand eternally through your descendants. True
Parents are absolutely necessary in this process.
All people without exception are descended from the Fall. As a result of the
Fall, we have become like those whose eyes look normal but who are actually
blind. Can the blind save the blind? Someone sent directly by God must
come. This person must be someone who stands in a position unrelated to the
Fall, closely examines the world, and has the ability to save humanity from
the path of death. I have come in that precise position. God sent me with His
seal of approval as the Savior of humanity, the Messiah, the returning Lord,
and the True Parent. Humanity needs only to restore the absolute realm of
the conscience by following the teachings of the True Parent. Then, absolute
ownership will also be recovered. The realms of absolute love, absolute life,
and absolute lineage will also be recovered.
You must first find the path leading to oneness with God. How is this
possible? Where does the foundation of love for the sake of others
originate? It originates with your love organ. Your reproductive organ
is your palace of love, palace of life, and palace of lineage. Until now,
humanity has lived without knowing the truth that it is through the love
organ that bonds of life are created, love is realized, and the connection
of lineage is established. Now we see that no truth is more precious than
this. Satan has controlled humankind for thousands and tens of thousands
of years by means of the reproductive organ. He turned things around 180
degrees in order to bring about the human Fall. If the Fall had not occurred,
there would be no need for such words as "Savior," "Messiah," "Lord of the
Second Advent," and "True Parent." Because the True Parents of humankind have
returned to this earth, humanity can now be liberated from Satan's yoke. It
has become possible to recover all that was lost through the Fall. Through
the original mind, it has become possible to recover the original value of
human beings. We can accomplish a worldwide realm of absolute goodness that
will not tilt toward Satan ever again.
Inherit the True Parents' Realm of Victory and Become Tribal Messiahs
What does the True Parents' realm of victory mean? It means that complete
victory has been achieved in the fight against Satan. Victory was achieved
in the realm of individuals. There was victory on the level of families.
Complete victory was achieved on the level of tribes, societies, nations, and
the world. It was a steep path that was never easy. I overcame every difficulty
and won the victory however, and on January 13, 2001, I dedicated to Heaven
"The Coronation Ceremony for the Kingship of God," which accomplished the
miracle of liberating even God. On the world level, I am also the one who is
rooting out communism and pouring life into Christianity in America. This
is a part of the True Parent's responsibility. The True Parent forgives
with true love and embraces even the collapsed communist countries. I am
liberating and pouring life into the communist realm.
Ladies and gentlemen, beginning some ten years ago, I have been commanding
all blessed families to become tribal messiahs. This means they must become
the new ancestors of their tribes. All your ancestors throughout history
have cherished the hope and earnest desire for tribal messiahs. The True
Parents who have won all the victories as the Messiah of humankind bequeath
to you their foundation, and on this foundation you must become victorious
messiahs on the tribal level. Families who have received the holy marriage
blessing from me and have joined the ranks of blessed families must now
become leaders who guide the world and saviors who save humanity as tribal
messiahs. You must become devoted children and patriots who erase the
grief of God, who has been waiting for this time for thousands and tens
of thousands of years. You will work in all countries of the world as the
vanguard, expanding the realm of victory gained by True Parents, who have
been victorious over Satan's vicious opposition and persecution and have
now bequeathed everything to you. You will liberate the world and establish
it anew before Heaven. In relation to the Messiah of humankind, a tribal
messiah is like a branch growing from the main trunk. When leaves sprout,
blossoms bloom, and fruit ripens on these branch messiahs, that fruit will
possess 100 percent of the value of the original Messiah. You will advance
into the realm of protection, where good spirits can protect you.
Refugees Who Lost Their Homeland
Ladies and gentlemen, humanity is in a position of having to recover its
homeland. A person who temporarily leaves his homeland can return, but a
person who has lost his homeland cannot return whenever he chooses. At the
moment that history began, we lost our homeland. We were expelled and have
lived as nomads. We have not been in a position to return, and we have not
even known the way back. So we have lived as wanderers without a homeland,
roaming aimlessly for thousands of years. Those who came alone from North
Korea as refugees and now live as people without a homeland will know
this mortifying and weary life. All your friends, siblings, and even your
parents were taken from you. You know your homeland exists, but it is not
a homeland that you can go to anytime you choose. You don't even know the
way there. People in this position must carry on their lives under extreme
circumstances. It is a position of extreme sadness, where you must start
from point zero and build a new life for yourself without the benefit of
any foundation. Even if you have the good fortune to become rich and become
prominent in society during your life as a refugee, nothing can take away
the sad longing, deep in your heart, to return to your homeland.
In the same way, people who have become lonely orphans as a result of the Fall,
committed by the original ancestors, have lived until now in the pitiful
position of people who have lost their homeland. God, who is the owner of
our homeland, solemnly waits for our return, but until now we have lived
without even the desire to return. We have become such a shameful sight that
we dare not even lift our heads before heaven and earth. During the course
of the world's population expanding to more than six billion, people have
experienced such misery in their lives as to be unable to discern night
from day. The feeling in God's heart must surely leave Him unable to speak
as He looks upon the distress His children are in. When a child meets with
tragedy, no one feels more sorrow and pain than the parents. God created us
as His children.
What, then, is God's heartfelt desire? It is to liberate His children by
any means possible, so they can find their way back to their homeland.
Religion is God's strategy to open this way. Through religious movements,
He laid a foundation so that we could return to the homeland together,
transcending our various environments, languages, cultures, ethnic backgrounds,
ideologies, systems, and philosophies. He has countless times come to see
the situations in which each of you lives. He waits anxiously for the day
when you can return to your homeland.
You must understand that God is the vertical True Parent who has conducted
His providence in ways that were appropriate to each historical period and
culture. He did not do all this for the benefit of any particular religious
body or any particular country. It was a manifestation of God's true love
for the sake of your liberation. It was an effort to lay a bridge that
would allow you to return to your homeland in freedom. So please remember
that you each stand in the position of representing not only your families
but also your country and all of humanity, and even all your ancestors in
spiritual world and all the descendants who will be born in the future. We
must achieve this precious, liberated state and fulfill our responsibilities
before Heaven and humankind.
We have such longing for our homeland, because there is love there that exists
for our sakes. The love of our mother and father, of our older brother and
sister and of our younger siblings, the love of our wife and children and
of our relatives can be found everywhere in the homeland. In the homeland,
all these relationships and bonds are connected in altruistic love; we
want to embrace them all at once. The traveler who yearns for his homeland
longs to return home as a proud liberated person, so that he can embrace the
mountains, rivers, grass, and trees, give love to his family and relatives,
and sing joyous songs. Having been vanquished and expelled from the homeland,
and having lost the connection of heart rooted in their homeland, people
have been unable to return and have been doomed to wander through eternity
on a lonely path until eventually going to hell. Now, however, we can be
liberated, and the path to the homeland that we can never forget, even in
our dreams, has been cleared. This is surely the day of greatest blessing
for humanity. You are going to recover the homeland lost by Adam and Eve.
The Family of Four Generations Living in Harmony
When you go to your homeland, you do so in the position of the perfected
Adam, the perfected Jesus, and in the position of a representative of the
returning Lord. God will reside in your family. The four generations of
grandparents, parents, children, and grandchildren will live together in
harmony. The grandfather must be attended as the ancestral root. The root of
history lives in such a family, and the root of the heavenly kingdom extends
itself into such a family. This would be a family where the Kingdom of God
on earth has taken root. Also, the root of the kingship that will continue
forever will be put down in such a family. The roots of the past, present,
and future are represented by the grandparents, parents, and grandchildren,
respectively. The root of the past represents the spirit world, the root of
the present is a palace representing the present world, and the root of the
future will establish the grandchildren as princes and princesses living
in a palace of peace representing the two worlds -- that is, the spirit
world and physical world. The mission of the tribal messiah is to establish
the families of God's kingdom of Cheon Il Guk, where four generations --
grandparents, parents, children, and the children's children -- live as
one family that is attending the eternal God. This is also God's heartfelt
desire. The mission is to establish families that God, if He were to go to
another land, would want to return to. It is to prepare families where God
can feel comfortable visiting anytime, just as a parent would visit the home
of a child. That is a life of service to God. In such a family, God becomes,
vertically, the subject being of conscience. Your own mind will follow this
vertical subject being and bring your mind and body into unity as your own
vertical subject being. In this situation, parental love, conjugal love,
children's love, and sibling love -- that is, the four great realms of love,
or four great realms of the heart -- will be perfected. This is how a family
must be in order to exist eternally through continuous spherical movement
connecting up and down, front and back, and left and right as one.
Ladies and gentlemen, why is it necessary to marry? We marry in order to obtain
the position of owner. A man or woman alone can only be half a person. That is
how it works in God's Creation. That is why God separated the ownership and
placement of the reproductive organs, which are the love organs. The husband
is the owner of the wife's reproductive organ, and the wife is the owner
of the husband's reproductive organ. If they are to establish themselves as
each other's owner, they each must stand centering on a love that is for the
sake of their partner. It is to obtain this position of ownership that people
marry. For what purpose, then, do we want to obtain the position of owner? It
is to use that position to occupy God. God is the subject being of the three
great loves. As the owner of the cosmos, He is the teacher of true love,
owner of true love, and parent of true love. These are the true "three great
subject ideas." All these teachings and truths will be realized centering
on the lives of true families. When they are expanded, societies, nations,
and even the world and cosmos can be changed to form the Peace Kingdom.
The tribal messiah who returns to his or her homeland must have an imposing
and resolute demeanor. There can be no complaining. It is our destiny to
go this way, even if we must go weeping bitterly. Those who understand the
circumstances of the Father -- how for thousands and tens of thousands of
years He waited with a heart filled with grief for the loss of His children
-- cannot travel this path without shedding tears. Your steps, as you go to
plant the seeds of love, must be filled with hope. Once these seeds of true
love are planted, no one will be able to steal them. They are the seeds
of the heart of true love. The families and countries where these seeds
sprout will remain forever in God's possession: those families will become
distinguished families of Heaven producing God's representatives generation
after generation, and those countries will become great nations under Heaven.
A Time of Fruition in the Providence
Ladies and gentlemen, we have come to a providential time of great urgency
when God's providence for human salvation must be brought to a conclusion.
God's heart and love for humanity has been the heart of a parent who loves a
child. God could not ignore the immorality and wickedness of this world, so
He finally sent me to correct these things and to tear down the barriers of
war and conflict for all eternity. In doing so, He gave me the qualification
to be the Savior, Messiah, returning Lord and True Parent who appears in the
world as the substantial body of God Himself. Recently, God Himself sent
me a letter in which He comforted me on my difficult life and offered me
encouragement. In addition, many people in spirit world, including the five
great saints, many prophets and kings who appeared in the course of history,
and even notorious murderers such as Hitler and reprehensible Communists
such as Stalin and Lenin have received my teachings, repented, and sent me
letters expressing gratitude.
Looking back on my life, I can say that humankind, which should have properly
attended and served the True Parent, Rev. Moon, with absolute faith, absolute
love, and absolute obedience, instead made him go through a wilderness course
lasting some eighty years, interspersed with persecution and suffering. I
am not the type of person who would ever let such things discourage me or
make me give up, however. If I were, God would never have sent me to earth
as His representative. As I clawed my way through indescribable suffering
and adversity, I never once reproached God or turned away from my mission. I
always worked for the ultimate fulfillment of God's Will. You who do not know
Heaven's providence have probably lived your lives only for the purpose of
fulfilling your own desires. By contrast, I have lived my life in accordance
with Heaven's Will and as a public person of the cosmos. Without the slightest
deviation, I have lived by practicing the true love of a True Parent so as to
gain victory in the course of indemnity needed for the salvation of humankind.
Respected and distinguished guests, humanity has now entered a historical
realm when we only need to focus on the future and march forward forcefully
with hearts filled with hope and desire. We have seen the birth of the
"Abel-type United Nations," 3 which will lay bare the unreasonableness and
the absurdities of the existing UN and provide fundamental solutions to
the various problems facing humanity today. On October 3, more than 1,500
leaders from around the world who follow my vision gathered in New York,
U.S.A., and accomplished the founding of this historic and providential
"Abel United Nations."
An Abel UN is a Peace UN
It is already 38 years since I met former United States president Dwight D.
Eisenhower and explained to him the necessity for an Abel United Nations.
Because of the ignorance of those in charge who could not understand the
significance of the hour, the fulfillment of that aspect of the providence
was delayed until today. Now, Heaven can wait no longer. This year, by
the demands of the providence, many righteous people who follow me made a
stand to rid themselves of their enmity for each other. Religious leaders
who had previously refused even to sit down together -- Jewish clergy
representing the First Israel, Middle Eastern clergy representing Islam,
and American clergy representing Christianity -- gathered in Jerusalem. These
traditional enemies took each other by the hand and announced the Jerusalem
Declaration. Next, a large number of religious leaders from across religious
boundaries gathered in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States,
which represents Christianity, the realm of the Second Israel. These religious
leaders proclaimed a resolution from the earthly world in response to the
resolution adopted by many leaders -- including the five great saints --
in the spirit world. On the basis of these declarations in Jerusalem and
Washington, a third declaration, the Seoul Peace Declaration, was adopted in
Seoul, Korea, on August 15 and announced to the world by its Jewish, Islamic,
and Christian clergy signatories. Please bear in mind that these steps were
the providential preparations for the founding of the Abel United Nations.
"Abel United Nations" means "Peace United Nations." The existing United Nations
is a Cain-type United Nations, a United Nations of strife. In contrast, the
Abel United Nations will be a structure that guarantees world peace. This is
nothing less than the most revolutionary and wondrous event to happen since
God created humankind. Now the world will begin to change rapidly. More than
120 billion blessed couples on the side of goodness in the spirit world
have been mobilized. On earth, tens of thousands of Ambassadors for Peace
and millions of other leaders around the world are carrying the torch of
the Peace United Nations.
Humanity now has the responsibility to work through the Peace United Nations
to build, on the earth, the Peace Kingdom that God and all people have longed
for. Attending God as our King, and, aligned internally on Cheon Il Guk and
externally on the Nation of the Fourth Israel, it is our responsibility to
build a world of peace that represents both the spiritual and earthly realms
and that transcends religions and nations.
Realizing World Peace Through the Peace UN
I want to make it clear to all the world that I will gladly transfer to the
control of the Peace United Nations the entire foundation that I have built
with blood, sweat, and tears over more than eighty years. To begin with,
the Family Federation, which now has missions in 191 countries, and dozens of
other groups and organizations founded by me will be placed under the control
of the Peace United Nations. All media organs, including the Washington Times
and United Press International (UPI) in the United States, the Middle East
Times in the Middle East, Tiempos del Mundo in Central and South America,
Segye Ilbo in Korea, and Sekai Nippo in Japan, will promote the work of the
Peace United Nations. Moreover, Sun Moon University in Korea, the University of
Bridgeport in the United States, Sunhwa (Little Angels) Middle and High School,
Sunjung Girls Middle and High School and other educational institutions will
be dedicated to the purpose of educating leaders capable of carrying out the
lofty purposes of the Peace United Nations. In the area of sports, too, the
Ilhwa Cheonma Soccer Team that has become the premier team in the Republic
of Korea, and Sorocaba and CENE, which have become prominent professional
football teams in Brazil, will dedicate their energies to the same purpose.
Ladies and gentlemen, I have no lingering attachments to this world. I
received Heaven's command as a young man of 15, and I have pursued this
throughout my life until now, when I am more than 80 years old. I will
spare no effort in dedicating the remaining years of my life to God and to
fulfill the heavenly mandate. Working through the Peace United Nations, I
will without fail resolve God's anguish and build God's Kingdom of freedom,
peace, unity, and happiness based on true love, on earth and in heaven.
Distinguished guests, please, even now, open the gates to your hearts and
receive your calling from Heaven with a spirit of one heart, one body, and
one mindset with God. Follow the tradition of the True Parents to practice
the life of a true teacher, true owner, and true parent. This path will
lead to your becoming representatives and heirs of Heaven and True Parents.
It is the path and mission of true love that builds the Peace Kingdom.
Distinguished guests, I pray that Heaven's great blessings will be upon your
journey as you preciously place deep within your hearts the bond created
today by our sharing these wonderful words of Heaven, and that from this
time forward you will pioneer a life that is on a new and higher level. With
this thought, I will now have my prayer of report read by a representative
and offer this gathering before Heaven.
Thank you very much.

Saturday 8 November 2003
I am a mountain,
My beloved is a mountain
Two thirds to the summit
Is a hidden pass.
When I go there to meet her,
I see the face of God.
A river of gold runs through the pass,
The river of life.
On either side, choice fruits hang from trees.
We delight in eating from the tree of life.
"Blessed are they who have washed their robes
For they shall eat from the tree of life
And enter the city by the gates."
The holy city of heaven opens up to us,
All its beauty we behold.
I eat the fruit and see beyond the looking glass
And realize that this is the real world;
But heretofore I lived in the looking glass world,
All reversed from true, good and beautiful.
The other fruits built our strength
Before we could eat that one fruit
Long forbidden, denied,
Once defiled, long cursed,
Now pristine, glorious, effulgent.
At the root of the mountain is a cave
Where water springs from the floor.
The water can be clear or dirty.
It can be the Spring of Life
Or the Spring of Death.
It all depends on my motivation.

Total Lunar Eclipse of November 09
Penumbral Eclipse Begins:
22:15:00 UT
Partial Eclipse Begins:
23:32:21 UT
Total Eclipse Begins:
01:06:07 UT
Greatest Eclipse:
01:18:23 UT
Total Eclipse Ends:
01:30:38 UT
Partial Eclipse Ends:
03:04:24 UT
Penumbral Eclipse Ends:
04:21:48 UT
The second lunar eclipse of the year occurs six lunations after the
first. It takes place at the ascending node of Luna's orbit in Aries.
This time, the Moon is 1.4 days shy of apogee and appears 12% smaller
(= 29.4 arc-minutes) than it was during May's eclipse. The Moon's
trajectory takes it well to the south of the umbral shadow's central
axis resulting in a total eclipse which lasts just 25 minutes. At mid-
totality, the Moon's southern limb is a scant 0.6 arc-minutes from
the umbra's edge. Even the northern limb is 23.4 arc-minutes from the
centre of the shadow. Assuming that the transparency of Earth's
atmosphere remains relatively unchanged, the November eclipse will be
dramatically brighter than the May event because of the shallow
umbral depth. Since different parts of the Moon will probe radically
different portions of Earth's umbral shadow, a large variation in
shadow brightness can be expected. The totally eclipsed Moon will
appear to have a bright rim along its southern edge. Observers are
encouraged to estimate the Danjon value at mid-totality (see section:
Danjon Scale of Lunar Eclipse Brightness).
The near grazing geometry of this event suggests that it is a
transition eclipse in its Saros series. Indeed, it is the very last
total eclipse of Saros 126. This series produced thirteen total lunar
eclipses during the past 234 years. The next nineteen eclipses in the
family will all be partial eclipses of decreasing duration and
magnitude.
The penumbral phase of November's eclipse begins at 22:15 UT (on Nov
08), but most observers will not be able to visually detect the
shadow until about 23:00 UT. The partial eclipse commences with first
umbral contact at 23:33 UT. Totality begins at 01:06 UT and lasts
until 01:31 UT. The partial and penumbral phases end at 03:05 UT and
04:22 UT, respectively.
At the instant of mid-totality (01:19 UT), the Moon will stand at the
zenith for observers near the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic. At
that time, the umbral eclipse magnitude will be 1.022. The entire
eclipse will be visible from Europe and most of Africa as well as the
eastern Americas. Various stages of the eclipse are in progress at
moonset for observers throughout Asia. In the Western Hemisphere, the
ingressing partial phases will already be in progress at moonrise for
observers in western Canada and the U. S.. The Moon's path through
Earth's shadows as well as a map illustrating worldwide visibility of
the event is shown in Figure 4. Note that no eclipse is visible from
easternmost Asia, Japan, Indonesia or Australia. Table 4 lists
predicted umbral immersion and emersion times for twenty well-defined
lunar craters. The timing of craters is useful in determining the
atmospheric enlargement of Earth's shadow (see: Crater Timings During
Lunar Eclipses).

US Warns China on Tone of Trade Relations
October 30, 2003 7:34:00 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration, under pressure from
Congress to reverse a huge trade deficit with China, said on Thursday it
has warned Beijing time was running out for it to improve its compliance
with international trade rules.
"I really do feel that the tone in our business community has changed
since the summer," Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Josette Shiner told
members of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee. "Our
tone has changed also. We hear the urgency of it."
Most U.S. companies had been willing to give China a grace period to meet
the commitments it made when it joined the World Trade Organization in
December 2001, Shiner said. But that attitude changed as China became an
increasingly important player in world trade, she said.
"Because of their own success, they're going to be held to a high standard
very quickly. If they weren't exporting so much to the United States, it
wouldn't matter so much, but a lot is at stake," Shiner told the panel.
Shiner, who travels to China in mid-November, said the United States has
warned China that it wants to see changes in a tax rebate system that U.S.
semiconductor firms complain puts them at a severe trade disadvantage.
The Bush administration's first choice has been to try to resolve trade
disputes with China without resorting to action at the World Trade
Organization.
But in "a few areas, like the VAT (value-added tax), we think there's a
serious gap in view ... and we're not sure we will resolve that" through
direct negotiations, she said.
U.S. semiconductor manufacturers complain China's tax policies violate WTO
rules by imposing higher taxes on imported semiconductors than on those
produced in the domestic market.
China charges a 17 percent value-added tax on sales of computer chips, but
offers a rebate of up to 11 percent if the chips are manufactured in China
and up to 14 percent if they are designed and made in China.
Shiner said the United States also was looking for China to beef up its
protection of U.S.-copyrighted and patented products. U.S. companies
complain that illegal copying of products ranging from manufacturing
equipment to movies cost them billions in lost sales to China each year.
There are signs of progress on that front with the appointment of a
high-level Chinese official to oversee enforcement of intellectual property
rules, Shiner said.
China has also promised to investigate individual cases brought to their
attention, she said.

Special speaker talks to Westwood students
10-29-03
By MARY RAINWATER
H-P Staff Writer
Omar Jahwar, founder of the South Dallas anti-gang program Vision
Regeneration, spoke to students at Westwood High School Tuesday morning to
spread his message about making the right choices.
Sponsored by the Westwood Parent-Teacher Association, Jahwar began his talk
with the theme "My Life. My Choice."
"Your destiny is locked in your choices," Jahwar said. "I have seen many
young people, because they were not informed, they made a difficult choice
that changed their life.
"If you don't understand the issue, how can you chose to lose your life for
something you don't understand," he continued. "How dare somebody make you
put your life on the line for something you don't understand."
According to Jahwar, 72 percent of people injured in violent conflicts are
innocent bystanders, 85 percent of those who don't graduate from high
school will live a life of poverty and 80 percent of those who join a gang
will end up dead.
"You don't retire from being a gangster," he told the students. "You live
out your days in prison or you end up dead."
Jahwar also talked to the students about peer pressure, and urged them to
take a stand for what they believe.
"Real men and real women stand alone," he said. "Do not be a leech to your
community, be one that builds the community.
"Look inside yourself to find strength," he continued. "And be smart enough
to know when somebody is bringing you into a losing battle."
Jahwar also talked with students about choosing friends wisely.
"Negative people have negative vibes and positive people have positive
vibes," Jahwar said. "Don't allow negative people to influence you or bring
you down to their level.
"And never believe you have to be somebody else's tool."
Jahwar graduated from Lancaster High School in 1990 and attended Bishop
College and Jackson State University, majoring in sociology.
He has been a gang intervention counselor in Gainsville since 1995. He also
has been a volunteer for The Gainsville Intervention Training Program, Gang
Enterprise and Boy Scouts of America.
Jahwar made history when the State of Texas hired him as the first gang
intervention specialist. He also spoke before the Senate Select Committee
on Gang Intervention and received a presidential award for his work.
He has received many awards and acknowledgments for his work, which
include: the White House Award for Achievement Against the Odds, Martin
Luther King Jr. Award, The Key to the City of Dallas, and The True Family
Service Award from The Family Federation for World Peace & Unification.
On top of everything else, Jahwar is an evangelist and an accomplished
singer in contemporary Gospel. He also has his own record label, Butterfly
Records which has released two albums.

US Accused of Using 'Totalitarian Sects' to Destroy Russia
By Sergei Blagov
CNSNews.com Correspondent
October 29, 2003
Moscow (CNSNews.com) - Government and religious officials in Russia are
pressing for a campaign against "totalitarian sects," which threaten
national security, they claim.
Some officials accuse the United States of using the "sects" - including
Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientologists, the Unification Church
(Moonies), and Hare Krishna - to undermine the Russian state.
"Most sectarian organization are of the U.S. origin," Yuri Polischuk,
department head at the health ministry's Moscow Institute of Psychiatry
said Tuesday. He said the inflow of sects was a "well-planned and
coordinated action, funded from abroad" and aimed at "subverting our
state."
Polischuk was addressing a round-table discussion in Moscow, entitled
"Totalitarian Sects: Weapon of Mass Destruction."
Participants in the forum, attended by interior ministry officials,
scholars, and representatives of the Orthodox Church, suggested that the
country amend its criminal code to more effectivelycombat the sects'
recruiting methods.
According to the RIA news agency, experts claimed there were up to 500
sects in Russia with a total of one million followers, of whom two thirds
were between the ages of 18 and 27.
A leading critic of sects, Alexander Dvorkin, described the sects as
authoritarian, pseudo-religious organizations that seek only money and
power.
Addressing the round-table, Dvorkin lashed out what he called "imported
sects."
Dvorkin, who is attached to the Orthodox Church, is a U.S. citizen who has
lived in Russia for about a decade on a permit for foreign residents. A
controversial figure, he has even labeled Pentecostal Christianity as a
"totalitarian sect," according to the Slavic Center for Law and Justice, an
arm of the American Center for Law and Justice, a conservative public
interest law firm.
Officially, the Russian constitution has put an end to Soviet-era religious
persecution. The fall of communism in 1991 not only resulted in the revival
of the Orthodox Church, but also in the growth of other religions, cults
and sects.
Many Russians became fearful of the inflow of foreign sects. To address the
concerns, lawmakers passed the controversial "freedom of conscience and
religious association" law in 1997.
While backed by the Russian Orthodox Church, the legislation was criticized
by other religious groups, the Vatican, human rights advocates and Western
governments, which described it as discriminatory.
The law, which ostensibly targets cults, requires religious groups to prove
that they have existed in Russia for at least 15 years. It is widely viewed
as favoring the Orthodox Church.
The law in fact describes the Orthodox Church as the country's dominant
religion; cites Islam, Judaism and Buddhism as other "traditional" faiths;
and gives all other denominations a secondary role, subjecting them to
tough registration requirements.
Its most controversial clause says a religious group must have operated in
Russia for 15 years before it can distribute literature or invite
foreigners to preach.
Groups failing to meet this requirement are also barred from establishing
educational centers or media outlets, and their clergy are not exempt from
military service.
Orthodox Church Patriarch Alexiy II has praised the law as a strong barrier
against foreign "pseudo-missionaries" whom he said had "inundated" Russia.
Orthodox Church officials argue that the provisions are aimed at curbing
the activities of "destructive" groups like the Aum Shinri Kyo cult of
Japan, although such mainstream Christian organizations as the Salvation
Army have fallen foul of the law.
In the most recent move to combat foreign "pseudo-religious" influence,
Moscow authorities banned the celebration of Halloween in the capital's
schools.
Halloween celebrations were "harmful for the education of children," Moscow
education department spokesman Alexander Gavrilov said Tuesday.

Farrakhan urges humanity to seek the favor of God, not government
By Dora Muhammad
Associate Editor
Updated Oct 29, 2003, 4:36 pm
CHICAGO (FinalCall.com) - On the eighth anniversary of the historic Million
Man March, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan delivered a passionate
message focused on the need for humanity to accept Allah (God) as the only
leader to whom they should petition for guidance.
"This is the Lords Day. Its not about a 24-hour period," explained Min.
Farrakhan to an audience at Mosque Maryam. "A day with the Lord is as a
thousand years. And Christs reign is on the seventh day. Thats why you have
a sect of Christianity called Seventh Day Adventists. An Adventist is one
who believes in the advent, the coming to, or toward, of the Christ-figure
in the 7,000 year from the birth or making of Adam."
Tuned in via webcast, listeners in over 160 cities throughout America, the
Caribbean, Mexico, and Europe heard his declaration that the wicked are not
to rule today, and in fact, that this is the seventh dispensation in Time
when God comes to take over the rule of the human family for Himself.
However, he urged all those who wanted to be guided to the straight path of
God in order to receive Gods favor to accept the process of cleaning up
their lives through the eight steps of atonement.

The October 16 event marked eight years since nearly two million men
gathered on the Mall in Washington, D.C., in the spirit of atonement to
themselves, their families, their communities and their people, seeking
forgiveness and reconciliation, and offering their lives in acceptance of
their responsibility to uplift and advance themselves and their people.
Their historic presence of peace and unity established the day as a Holy
Day of Atonement.
Reflecting on that day as an "extraordinary day in our history," Min.
Farrakhan answered critics who tried to minimize the benefits of the March
because the men did not petition the government on that day.
"That was not our purpose," said Min. Farrakhan. "Had we gone there to
petition Washington, we would have been giving Washington more credit than
Washington is due. Washington cannot give what only God can give. To give
Pharaoh credit is to rob God, as though a benevolent president can do more
for us than God and we united with God can do for ourselves."
"The Lord is my shepherd," the Minister continued. "And it matters not what
you do to me, I know that the Black man and the Red man and all human
beings who wish to be free, will be free. But somebody has to be willing to
pay that price. God does not want you, if you are unwilling to pay the
price."
He chided the audience on the divisions that keep Black people weakened,
along political, ideological, religious organizations, saying that envy,
jealousy, enmity and hatred mark the lack of progress. Positions in
politics and corporate America cannot solve the problems of a nation, he
pointed out, while stressing that a broader sight can help Black people to
begin to think about what is in the best interest of the group, not a few
individuals. "We have to see ourselves as a nation in another nation that
does not have land sufficient that we can become self-independent," the
representative of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad noted.
In attendance to hear Min. Farrakhans address were Bishop Ki Hoon Kim
representing the Unification Church; Reverend Al Sampson of Fernwood
Methodist Church; Dr. Iva Carruthers; Rev. Dr. Maxine Walker, who was
instrumental in organizing the local Million Man March committee; Professor
Michael Lieb from the University of Illinois at Chicago; Erica Henry, wife
of Reverend James Bevel, who was key in assisting Min. Farrakhan to develop
the theme of atonement for the Million Man March; and a delegation
representing the Hebrew Israelite Community.
After the three-hour lecture, several dignitaries offered their thoughts to
The Final Call.
"I thought that Brother Farrakhan is putting a challenge out there for us
to really, really focus on the issue of unity, in the spirit of the ndaba,"
shared Dr. Carruthers, a staunch fighter for reparations for Black people.
"To understand that only through unity will we be victorious and only
focusing on the Will of God in our lives and righteousness. The struggle is
not going to be an easy one. We will have to bear the cross to do that."
Bishop Kim said that he was inspired by the wonderful lecture by Min.
Farrakhan. "He talked about how we, fallen people, can go back to God and
be good people and teachers to this country. He talked about how people can
be saved."
While Rev. Walker felt that eight years after the March, there still was
much work to be done in the atonement process, she remained hopeful for the
future after Min. Farrakhans lecture.
"One of the things that seems to be on his heart," she opined, "was if he
could just get men to repent. Its so personal; its not something that they
have to do to showcase themselves to man. If they could just humble
themselves and prostrate themselves before Almighty God and repent to Him,
because whatever you do thats genuine on the inside is going to reflect on
the outside. I think thats what the Ministers total message was tonight.
"For us as a people, to stop being fooled by one another, to stop playing
with God and that all of us who say we want to see a new day, until we all
come together in one faith and the unity of God, we will be drifting as we
are now."
A morning to remember
Despite a six-hour difference, members of the Nation of Islam in London,
England, sat in deep concentration at 1 a.m. watching the address of Min.
Farrakhan. Minister Hilary Muhammad shared with The Final Call his
perspective on the atonement process, which he called an opportunity for
the community to move forward, and for individuals to renew their
commitment to Allah through each other.
"If there is an issue, we have to use the 12-month period to resolve it, as
opposed to, on the Day of Atonement, resolving five-year issues," he
explained. "Instead of harboring ill feelings, if we dont atone, it may
lead to the pathology of hypocrisy. Your displeasure will be based upon a
catalogue of incidents that have not been resolved."
By fearing only Allah, as Min. Farrakhan taught in his address, it will be
easy to approach one another in order to atone, which is essential in
creating a family of believers, Min. Hilary added.
"You cannot go into Paradise with enmity in your heart for your brother and
sister," he concluded, "so those issues have to be resolved. Then, the
community will be cleansed of hypocrisy, envy, jealousy, and ill
feelingsall of these things that sap us of our power."
A clear message
from east to west
Throughout the mosques of the seven regions of the Nation of Islam,
registered Muslims, community leaders and guests watched the webcast
broadcast of Min. Farrakhan, from Miami to Memphis, New York to New
Orleans, Detroit to Denver, San Francisco to Sacramento.
"Minister Farrakhan made it very clear that the Muslim community must spend
more time reading and studying their Quran, and that we must truly practice
Islam, not just its rituals," said Sister Debra Kaliq, a member of the
Nation of Islam for 36 years, who listened to the lecture at Harlems Mosque
No. 7. "One of the most significant things he said was that the Black
community was off the mark, how all of our institutions need to redeem
themselves."
"As any thinking and loving leader would do, he is thoughtfully giving us
directions on how best to deal with these perilous times," said Min. Kevin
Muhammad, head of Mosque No. 7, adding that it was very important that Min.
Farrakhan reminded us that separation between the Black and White people in
America might very well prove necessary.
An audience of 400 filled the mosque in Washington, D.C., many of whom
remained to fellowship after the lecture.
"Minister Farrakhan reminded us of what the Honorable Elijah Muhammad said
many years ago that is still true," said Minister Abdul Khadir Muhammad,
the Mid-Atlantic and East Coast Regional Minister. "He said that we would
never get justice from our open enemy. The Minister reminded us that for
justice we must separate and build a house of our own."
Sis. Jennifer A. Muhammad, an urban planner from San Francisco, who heard
the message in D.C., shared what she learned from the lecture. "God doesnt
want us if were not willing to pay the price of redemption. God will do His
part if we are willing to do our part. The Minister is an example to us on
what it means to do our part," she said. "I was inspired by his words that
we have to be willing to give something up to do this work. The Minister is
willing to give his life to see Black people be free."
Prior to the 7 p.m. lecture by Min. Farrakhan, the members of the mosque in
Los Angeles accepted the invitation from the Western Regional Minister Tony
Muhammad to come to the mosque to engage in the atonement process with one
another, before finalizing preparations for the lecture, which was viewed
by over 500 people.
Five hundred people also came to the mosque in Houston, Texas. Earlier that
day, the Southwest Regional Minister Robert Muhammad gave a lecture about
atonement to nearly 900 students at the Alphonso Crutch charter school.
Similar community outreach and education efforts occurred in Miami,
Florida, where Seventh Regional Minister Rasul Muhammad and other mosque
officials visited various homeless shelters and prisons to deliver a
message on atonement.
"Min. Farrakhan was very clear on the enemys objective, and he gave us
something very profound that will enable us to survivethe 23rd Psalm in the
Bible," the head of Muhammad Mosque No. 25 in Newark, New Jersey, Min.
Michael Muhammad told The Final Call. "He made it clear that the Honorable
Elijah Muhammad placed himself in Allahs hands as his Shepherd, and we need
to do the same."
"Many of those in attendance said that they were moved by Min. Farrakhans
spirit, and that they felt compelled to fall in line with the program of
the Hon. Elijah Muhammad," he noted.
"Min. Farrakhan always puts the focus back on the mission of the Nation of
Islam," Min. Jerry Muhammad of Study Group No. 57 in Norfolk, Virginia,
said. "He was able in his address to renew our spirit to become more
committed to the meaning of the Million Man March and the Holy Day of
Atonement."

Greetings
IIFWP is pleased to bring you this issue of the Enews, featuring the Inaugural
Assembly of the Interreligious and International Peace Council [IIPC]. Beginning
this summer and into the fall, IIFWP held one-day seminars in 158 nations to
discuss the importance and urgency of creating new and innovative models of
governance. While we continue to promote efforts to establish an Interreligious
Council at the UN, IIFWP is also moving forward to establish an Interreligious
and International Peace Council as a substantial model of effective governance.
We are happy to say that the Inaugural Assembly for the Peace Council took place
on October 3, 2003 as part of an international convocation, “Global Governance
for a New Realm of Peace,” that was held in New York City, October 1-4, 2003.
There were over twelve hundred delegates representing one hundred and forty nine
nations who attended this unprecedented event. In this issue you will find
several reports, photos and the Founder’s Inaugural Speech, “The New
Elimination of Boundaries and World Peace.”
In order to move forward quickly on this initiative, three weeks later, again in
New York, an IIPC Consultation was held, attended by approximately twenty five
distinguished advisors with experience in international organizations. Together
we worked to outline and create working documents to support the progress of the
Peace Council. You will also find in this edition a report on this consultation
along with Rev. Dr. Kwak’s speech that conveys the vision of the IIPC.
Concurrent with the inauguration of the Peace Council was a seven-nation
mobilization of volunteers, many of whom worked with the UN team and with the
Ambassador for Peace initiative. Below are articles about an Ambassador for
Peace program that took place in New York, and a report about the work of the
special task force of volunteers as they tirelessly worked reaching out to the
UN community as the opening session of the 58th General Assembly got underway.
In addition, the Japanese volunteers working with the Office of UN Relations
continue to share their time-honored tea ceremony with the international
community in support of the UN’s Dialogue Among Civilizations initiative, while
IIFWP service projects are on-going with a report from Africa.
As we approach the close of a busy and successful year, IIFWP continues to go
forward. We anticipate the growth and development of the Peace Council, which
will eventually be implemented on local and national levels. We thank each and
every one of you who have worked with us as our partners in peace. We are
making a difference and without you this work would not be possible.
Sincerely,
Dr. Thomas G. Walsh,
Secretary General, IIFWP International
The Inauguration of the Interreligious and International Peace Council [IIPC]
==========================================
The IIPC was founded on October 3rd in New York City where 304 delegates,
including 52 guests from the United Nations-all together representing 149
nations-attended the 4-day Inaugural Assembly with the theme, "Global Governance
for a New Realm of Peace." "The Interreligious and International Peace Council,"
said H.E. Debbie H. Remengesau, First Lady of the Republic of Palau, "can
improve existing methods and practices for addressing critical global problems
by being the leader in the moral or spiritual conscience in leadership
governance."

The New Elimination of Boundaries and World Peace - Founder's Address
==========================================
Dr. Moon in his address at the Inauguration of the IIPC urged participants to
consider where indeed boundaries that prevent peace are formed. "When and where
are boundaries formed? Boundaries first take shape within ourselves. They form
in places where our hearts find something disagreeable, where our bodies find
something disagreeable, where we find our own actions to be disagreeable, and
where we find our own words to be disagreeable. When, in response to our five
senses, our mind and body are in disharmony, boundaries of all sorts come into
being. Please take a moment to consider all the different kinds of boundaries,
both large and small, that fill our lives."

IIPC Follow-Up Consultation
==========================================
Three weeks after the Inaugural Assembly of the Interreligious and International
Peace Council, on October 28-30, twenty-five distinguished delegates, longtime
friends and new acquaintances, gathered in New York for the Peace Council
planning consultation. The sessions sought to build upon the inaugural assembly
and to look for ways the IIPC could be a substantial model of a new and
innovative model of leadership and governance.

IIPC Consultation - Chairman's Opening Address
==========================================
Dr. Kwak in his address conveyed the Founder's deep desire and motivation for
creating the IIPC in the hopes of creating unity of purpose and to acknowledge
the critical times we are now living in. "The time we live in is a time of
harvest. It is a time when the fruit is ripe and ready to be harvested. Although
I am speaking from a religious point of view, I think you can also understand,
even from a humanitarian, or moral, or social perspective that we are living at
a very critical juncture in history. Something needs to be done to put an end to
the suffering of humanity and to bring each precious human being to a point
where they can fulfill their God-given hopes and aspirations."

Ambassadors for Peace in New York City
==========================================
Over 100 Ambassadors for Peace were appointed in New York City at the New Yorker
Hotel on 34th Street, Saturday, October 18, 2003. The Ambassadors for Peace
program is one of the many projects sponsored by the Interreligious and
International Federation for World Peace, [IIFWP] and was co-sponsored by the
American Clergy Leadership Conference [ACLC]. The program was the culmination of
a 40 day volunteer mobilization, where volunteers from 8 nations came to NYC to
work to support the inauguration of the Interreligious and International Peace
Council and to appoint Ambassadors for Peace.

Japanese Tea Ceremony Promotes Dialogue Among Civilizations
==========================================
Many representatives and Ambassadors from the UN Missions have attended the
Japanese Tea Ceremony, held by the IIFWP Office of UN Relations. Without
exception, they all say how tranquil and peaceful they feel after the
experience. They are served a special blend of green tea made by the tea master
in the traditional way and served in a beautiful tea bowl. The significance of
the ceremony is explained each step of the way. In a world that is rapidly
changing, the quiet calm of the ceremony adds a much needed respite to
diplomatic life and is the UN volunteers’ contribution to fostering the
“Dialogue Among Civilizations.”

Seven-Nation Mobilization and the UN Team
==========================================
The office of UN Relations has been instrumental in implementing IIFWP's
initiatives at the UN. During a recent seven-nation mobilization, 840 volunteers
came to the New York Area. Here is a report of the groundbreaking work of the UN
Team. "Through meetings and the distribution of key materials, average New
Yorkers along with presidents of nations, ministers of foreign affairs,
ambassadors and members of delegations coming to New York City for the UN’s 58th
Session of the General Assembly were urged to consider the substantial reality
of the spiritual dimensions of human life in the course of seeking solutions to
global crises."

"It was my second trip to Africa. I was shocked to see the reality of poverty
for the majority of people. There are so many people - adults and children - on
the street trying to make ends meet. I felt that we should meet their basic
needs before we shared profound insights, just as a mother meets the needs of
her children. That was the real beginning of my baptism into the world of
service."

You say you want a revolution
Two new books explore the legacy of the 1960's spiritual revolution and
they couldn't have more disparate conclusions.
by Steve Rabey October 24, 2003
The 1960s generated plenty of headlines about long hair, loud music, sexual
experimentation, protest movements and mind-expanding drugs. Fewer stories
explained how a new generation of believers transformed America's spiritual
landscape.
Now, new books by a San Francisco journalist and a Connecticut scholar
illuminate the two major streams of the 1960s spiritual revolution: the
emergence of an alternative spirituality counterculture with a dizzying
succession of novel gurus, revelations and rituals; and the dogged
perseverance of established, mainstream religious institutions.
Following Our Bliss: How the Spiritual Ideals of the
Sixties Shape Our Lives Today
by Don Lattin
Published by Harper San Frnacisco
October 2003, 288 pages
Knocking on Heaven's Door: American Religion in the Age
of Counterculture
by Mark Oppenheimer
Published by Yale University Press
October 2003, 304 pages
"... American religions must constantly sell themselves, and the ones that
last are the ones that discover ways to exert imaginative sway ..."
Together, these books show that Americans worship differently and even
understand religion differently than they did a few decades ago, no matter
whether they pray in a church, synagogue, or an ashram.
Don Lattin, the San Francisco Chronicle's veteran religion writer, may have
done more firsthand reporting on contemporary alternative spirituality than
anyone. "Oh, the messiahs I have known!" he writes in the preface to
"Following Our Bliss: How the Spiritual Ideals of the Sixties Shape Our
Lives Today" (HarperSanFrancisco). The book's cover photo shows a
rainbow-hued Volkswagen bus festooned with American flags and peace signs.
Inside, the book features a dozen equally colorful chapters showing where
Moonies, Krishnas and Rajneeshis are today.
Mark Oppenheimer is a writer for the Christian Century whose work has
appeared in Harper's and the New York Times. He thinks too many writers
have focused on the "extremes" of alternative religion, and he concentrates
instead on "the vast majority of Americans" who follow the lead of
established denominations instead of riding "the paisley bus of religious
experimentation."
"American religions must constantly sell themselves, and the ones that last
are the ones that discover ways to exert imaginative sway," writes
Oppenheimer in "Knocking on Heaven's Door: American Religion in the Age of
Counterculture" (Yale).
The two books use different approaches to cover different aspects of recent
American religious history. Lattin's book is deeply personal. Born to a
Jewish mother but raised in Presbyterian and Congregational churches, he
came to Berkeley in the 1960s to follow his own bliss before covering the
religion beat. "We were a restless bunch," he writes. "We were a generation
that was not content to stay in the suburbs and pray to God on Sunday
morning. Many of us wanted to see God, to be God, or to at least recapture
the ecstasy and revelation of that eye-opening acid trip we couldn't get
out of our system."
Whether he's making a pilgrimage to the Esalen Institute, an oceanside
human-potential center he labels "the birthplace of religion,
California-style," or sitting in on a retreat for Buddhist families at the
Spirit Rock Meditation Center, Lattin champions '60s ideals like hope and
idealism while he examines the impact of these ideals on the children of
1960s spiritual pioneers.
Like the characters in "Drop City," T.C. Boyle's best-selling novel about
the era, many '60s seekers were too childish to be good parents to their
own children. And as Lattin shows, the obsessive quest for nirvana often
resulted in neglect of loved ones.
In some cases, that neglect resulted in outright abuse, as was the case at
some of the Krishna Consciousness communities that valued duty to Hindu
deities over duties to family. But in other cases, family values were
actually strengthened, as Lattin discovers by talking to some of the people
wed in the mass marriages arranged by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
Oppenheimer's tone is more removed and objective. His five lengthy chapters
examine Catholics and the folk mass, Southern Baptists and the war,
Episcopalians and women priests, Jews and communal worship, and Unitarians
and gay rights. Religious activists in all these traditions "took
permission from radical countercultural elements," writes Oppenheimer, and
they utilized some of the same techniques used by civil rights activists or
anti-war protesters to promote their agendas.
In the end, religious activists got many of the changes they demanded. Or
did they? "What changed was the form, not the content, of the religious
traditions," he writes. "The most important fact was how different the
worship service 'looked' or 'felt,' rather than any new ideas being
taught."
While both books examine changes in the Catholic Church, neither fully
explores the Jesus movement or the controversial legacy of best-selling
writer Carlos Castaneda, who died in 1998. Castaneda is the subject of
"Sorcerer's Apprentice: My Life With Carlos Castaneda" (Frog, Ltd.), a
meandering memoir by Amy Wallace, a former disciple and lover.
Wallace, the daughter of best-selling writer Irving Wallace, met Castaneda
in 1973, the same year a Time magazine cover story questioned his supposed
apprenticeship with a shaman named Don Juan. Nearly two decades later,
Wallace joined Castaneda's inner circle, which helped run his business
operations and serviced his sexual urges. And even though Castaneda
routinely played his women followers against one another and subjected them
to verbal and psychological abuse, Wallace blithely believes it was all for
their own good.
Such blind faith in destructive gurus was one characteristic of 1960s
spirituality. But Lattin believes the roots of the '60s could be found in
earlier periods of American history. Both the Great Awakening and the
Transcendentalist movement emphasized religious experience and an
anti-authoritarian individualism.
Other authors agree that recent changes are part of a much older religious
story. "The '60s were just a step along the way to a new spirituality for
the Western world," says James A. Herrick, a professor at Hope College in
Holland, Mich., and author of "The Making of the New Spirituality." For
Herrick and others, the '60s represent a recent stage in a "spiritual
paradigm shift" that has been centuries in the making.

N Korea 'kills detainees' babies'
North Korean soldier
North Korean guards are said to inflict brutal punishments
North Korea has been accused of killing the babies of women who are
forcibly repatriated from China.
The US-based Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (CHRNK) said the
women were kept in short-term detention camps where they are either given
abortions or their babies are killed at birth .
Between 200,000 and 300,000 North Koreans are believed to have crossed into
China in the 1990s at the height of the country's famine.
The Stalinist regime regularly denies abusing the rights of prisoners, and
also denies that the prison camps described in the report even exist.
When the box was full of babies... it was taken outside and buried
The Hidden Gulag: Exposing North Korea's Prison Camps
It is not the first time allegations of child killings have been made - a
Human Rights Watch report made similar claims last year.
But the CHRNK report, based on the testimony of dozens of escaped
prisoners, is one of the fullest accounts to emerge so far.
It paints a picture of detention centres and camps where torture, chronic
malnutrition and forced labour are commonplace.
One woman told of being forced to assist injection-induced labours and then
watching as a baby was suffocated with a wet towel in front of its mother.
Many former prisoners told of babies buried alive or left face down on the
ground to die. They were told by guards this was to prevent the survival of
half-Chinese babies.
If fleeing North Koreans are discovered by Chinese police, they are almost
always returned home.
China has a treaty with its ally North Korea which obliges it to send
refugees back.
The report was compiled by David Hawk, a human rights investigator, who
interviewed former North Korean prisoners now living in the South.
The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, which says it is not
affiliated with the US government, said the report did not claim to be
comprehensive.
'Animals fared better'
The CHRNK says testimony of a former prisoner of a North Korean gulag from
1967-74 is very similar to contemporary accounts, and indicates that the
mistreatment of prisoners has not changed much in the last 30 years.
And the group believes that the harrowing events included in its report are
continuing.
"We have every reason to believe this [maltreatment] is still being carried
out," Debra Liang-Fenton, executive director of the group, told BBC News
Online.
She said the group had been in recent contact with more former prisoners
and "the testimony pretty much remains the same".
Methods of torture reported across North Korea's detention system include
beating prisoners on their fingertips, the use of miniaturised prison
cells, getting prisoners to repeatedly stand up and sit down and forcing
them to kneel motionless for hours - a punishment described by one prisoner
as more painful than beatings.
One former prisoner at a camp in North Hamgyong province said the
highlights of his stay were walks outside, when prisoners could eat plants
and grass.
The report's contributors reported a constant lack of food and fights
between prisoners over scraps of nourishment. No-one expected to survive
long-term detention.
A former detainee at facilities in Onsong and Chongjin said the farm
animals ate better.
Public executions
Those who attempted to escape North Korea's gulags were executed, the
witnesses said.
Lee Young-kuk, a former inmate at the Yodok camp in South Hamgyong
province, told how one man was executed by being dragged behind a car in
front of all the prisoners.
When he was dead, other inmates had to "place their hands on his bloodied
corpse".
Ahn Myong-chol, a former guard at the Haengyoung camp in North Hamgyong
province, told the group that between 1,500 and 2,000 prisoners, mostly
children, died there each year.
Debra Liang-Fenton said that, despite the endemic human rights abuses, her
group supported continued diplomatic negotiations with the North Korean
leadership.
But, she added, "this report shows that human rights needs to be part of
the agenda".

their third successive K-League championship with an away win over the Pohang
Steelers on Sunday evening.
The striker was on target three minutes from the end as he picked up his
sixth league-winner's medal in seven seasons with three different clubs.
In contrast with last season, there will be no cliffhanger finish this time
around. Songnam have still five games to play, and the ease with which they
have taken the silverware may have surprised even themselves.
The Chunma were confirmed as champions without kicking a ball on Saturday as
the second-placed Ulsan Tigers failed to get the win that would theoretically
have kept them in the race.
Ulsan looked like providing a morsel of defiance in their away match against
the Anyang Cheetahs as Brazilian striker Dodo gave them the lead in the 23rd
minute, but 12 minutes later, Anyang's Choi Won-kwon equalized.
The result left the Tigers 16 points adrift with five games remaining on
their schedule, allowing the Chunma to start their celebrations ahead of
the visit to the Steelers.
The Chunnam Dragons leapfrogged the Chonbuk Motors into third with a win
over the Daejeon Citizen, who were kept in the top six by Songnam's win
in Pohang. Shin Byung-ho put the Dragons ahead in the fourth minute. Kim
Song-keun made it 1-1 in the 59th minute, but a penalty from Itamar a minute
from the end gave Chunnam the three points.
Chonbuk fought back from a goal down against the Suwon Blue Wings to take a
2-1 lead only to be pegged back for a 2-2 draw. Nadson put Suwon ahead just
before half-time, but goals in the 67th minute from Edmilson and 15 minutes
later by Namkung Do put the Motors ahead. Suwon, however, got a share of
the points when Namkung Ung scored deep in injury time.
Daegu F.C. got a rare win as they downed the Busan Icons 2-0. Yoon Joo-il
got the opener in the 14th minute and Kim Kun-hyung made sure of the win
three minutes from time.
In Sunday's other game, Bucheon had a scoreless draw with the Sangmu Phoenix.
There was something appropriate about the way the Chunma were confirmed
champions by a result reflecting the shortcomings of their rivals rather than
their own excellence. Cha Kyoung-bok's side have been a model of consistency
all season, and are worthy champions, but the efforts of the league's other
11 team have done little to promote the image of what is supposedly Asia's
strongest league.
Ulsan, in fairness, can claim to have made substantially more headway than
the other 10 also-rans. Had they not lost Yoo Sang-chul and Lee Chun-soo,
their two best players, during the season, they would undoubtedly have given
Songnam more of a challenge.
There is, however, something seriously wrong in the K-League. While their
detractors may bemoan the amount of money the Chunma spent on hoarding star
players this season, there is no dreadful shortage of talent. Manager's
selections are at times bewildering, making at least one observer wondering
what criteria determine a first-team lineup.
Tactically, the kind of displays put up by some teams are so shapeless that
it is hard to believe they spend the kind of hours in training we all know
they do.
Songnam's third straight title could be good news if it inspires other
teams to imitate their attacking style. But that has not seemed to follow
their last two triumphs. The new free-agency rules may help spread talent
throughout the league, while the launching of a second division, to where
underachieving clubs can be banished at season's end, can not come soon enough.
So congratulations to the Songnam Chunma on their success, and long may
it continue while the rest of the K-League's clubs sit around continuously
failing to find a way to close the gap.

As far as I can tell, this is an article from the International Press Center
from the Palestinian government.

IIFWP Delegation Visits Gaza Strip
International Press Center - EXCLUSIVE
October 23, 2003
A senior interreligious delegation, representing a wide range of religious
groups and nations, visited the Gaza Strip today to have a first-hand view
of the disastrous situations of the Palestinian people that are caused by
the Israeli occupying forces.
[iifwp_b.jpg]
The delegation included Muslim, Christian and Jewish clergymen, former
Knesset member and a senator in the United States Senate, all members if
the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWB).
During the visit, which was organized by individual Palestinian initiators,
the delegates visited the town of Beit Hanun, and witnessed the amount of
destruction the Israeli war machine had left behind, and impacted thousands
of families in this farming community.
Reverent Michael Jenkins, Co-Chairman of the IIFWB in the United States and
head of the delegation, was appalled to the amount of destruction that
happened in the Gaza Strip, adding that despite this was his second visit
to the Strip in two months, he never got accustomed to the catastrophic
losses the Palestinian people suffered.
"We came here with the message of peace, love and reconciliation, Muslims,
Christians and Jews, we came here to bear witness to what is being
committed against the Palestinian people. In the name of the one God we all
believe in, we must face this monstrosity with unity, love and tolerance,"
Rev. Jenkins told IPC in an exclusive interview.
In addition to visiting the Gaza Strip, the IIFWB delegates also visited
the "Moon Cultural Center", named after the chairman of the IIFWB, Father
Moon, in which they officially declared the opening of the center, which
was equipped with 50 computers, donated by the IIFWB to the Palestinian
people.
Later, the delegation visited the third oldest church in Palestine, the
Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrius, which was built in the 5th
century, next to a mosque, where they met with the Archbishop, who stressed
on the brotherhood of the Palestinian Christians and Muslims and thanked
the delegation for their visit.
After that, the delegation visited several areas in Gaza City that was
bombed by the Israeli jetfighters and military helicopters, and listened to
a briefing about the nature of the places bombed.
Senator Donzella James, from the State of Georgia, said she was shocked to
see all this amount of destruction, which didn't distinguish between
civilian or governmental institutions, a thing that indicated the arbitrary
extermination campaign the Israeli occupation was leading against the
Palestinian people.
In the end, the delegation thanked the organizers for the visit, and
expressed sorrow for not being able to stay longer, as the Israeli
authorities had given them a two-hour permit into the Gaza Strip.
The IIFWP is a council of religious leaders that would work within the
structure of the United Nations, serving as a complement to the almost
exclusively political and economic emphasis that characterizes peacekeeping
efforts among its member nations.

Peace rally held in Jerusalem
JERUSALEM, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Hundreds gathered in Jerusalem's Independence
Park Wednesday for an interdenominational rally to promote peace.
Police said more than 1,000 Jews, Christians, Moslems, Druze, Buddhists,
Indians and leaders of the Unification Church attended the rally, just a
short walk from some of the bloodiest terrorist attacks in the intifada.
A rabbi blew a traditional ram's horn, a Christian clergywoman rang a bell
and a Moslem cleric called for prayer. An Indian chief added his prayer.
Singing spirituals, holding hands and raising them, participants called:
"Tear down the walls of violence so that we have freedom."
The organizers, members of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's church, argued politics
alone cannot resolve serious disputes and one needs love and reconciliation.
In the Middle East "after everything else has been tried ... we've got to
try God," Archbishop George Augustus Stallings Jr., chairman of the American
Clergy Leadership Conference, said in an interview.
Orthodox-Jewish youngsters of Yad La'ahim, which fights missionaries,
distributed leaflets criticizing the Unification Church as "a deceptive and
dangerous cult." Police kept them away.
