This site is a means of communication for Fellow Travelers, friends and associates of the Winston Free-State. Winston Free-State is a reenacting unit devoted to the accurate depiction of civilian life and work during the American Civil War. We are a member unit of the First Confederate Legion, a non-profit organization for Civil War reenactors, with member units throughout the Deep South.

Our unit name is taken from that area in northwestern Alabama, now Winston County, that attempted to remain somewhat neutral during the Civil War, resolving "Therefore we ask that the Confederacy on the one hand, and the Union on the other, leave us alone, unmolested, that we may work out our political and financial destiny here in the hills and mountains of northwest Alabama.

Despite the specific geographical location of the name, our members are located throughout the United States. We do not maintain a required event calendar for the unit, but encourage members to publicize and participate in quality events in their area.

And despite all this serious talk, we are here because its FUN.
