Ken: For some reason your e-mail is bouncing. I may not have the correct
address, so I will try contacting you this way. (Yeah, yeah I know -- I can
call). Anyway, we're sailing Wheelers this Saturday. Come on down if you can
make it. --Jim Linville
Yo, Rick: I'm driving out to SD. Leaving here on August 3. I'll be RDing the
Soling 50s and sailing in the US1Ms and Wheelers. I'm bringing three wheelers
and four US1Ms. The three Wheelers are for Herb; a new skipper, Colin Mosgrove
(sailing Jack's Boat); and me. The US1Ms are for the same three plus Jeff
Merriman. Herb and Colin are also sailing with the ODOMs. Ken has work
commitments, but says he's going to do his best to be there. He has a boat in
California.
I can hardly wait.

The Championship Regatta will be held at Century Park in Vernon Hills, just
outside
Chicago. The Chicago club has recently held the Region 4 Soling RCR there.
I want to thank the Chicago Club, especially Rob Hill and Gary Meuller for
volunteering to
hold this event. We're working on the NOR and will post it here and on the
Class page at
the AMYA website as soon as it is available.

Proof reading before posting is also very simple. Too bad you did not do so.
Had you given Jim Linville credit for the work he did, I would have simply called him.
Just for your personal information, my natural style tends towards dry humor which is sometimes confused with sarcasm by those with tender or guilty feelings.
I am also very politically incorrect, What you see is what you get both in public and in private.
Since I am too darn old to change, you will just have to get over it!
Kindest personal regards
Pete
ps: Now that I know that the ECs will also be sailing there I just might bring both boats.

Sorry, folks, it's my fault. I wrote the NOR for this regatta, and fouled up
with an inadvertent
"cut and paste." The "basic doc" was used for four NORs, with changes made for
each class. I
simply missed the making two of the required corrections. Sorry, again. You know
I wouldn't
confuse my Wheeler with and EC12.
I send a revised copy to Ken, and will post one here.

Ken;
Please read the NOR for the Wheeler Region 1 Regatta that are posted
to the site.
I am just a bit curious as to why the rules of the EC 12 class are to
be followed for the Wheeler Class Region 1 championship.
I am also most curious why I must be a member of the EC 12 class to
be elligible for this regatta.
Is it necessary to bring both boats???

The 2008 Wheeler Class sailing season is off to a great start. The
California fleet is getting together regularly weekly...I think they
want to keep the Champion Trophy out there.
I'm hoping to get them to post their weekly scores here as well as
their clubs websites. We'll do the same on the East Coast once the ice
clears. Send Me an Email or post your results here yourself.
Wheeler sailors, please keep checking back on this forum for whats
going on in the class. If you have any questions or comments feel free
to sign up and post here...this is your forum.

If anyone is interested in sailing this saturday, Rick, myself and
possibly George, (I havent heard back from yet) are going to be out at
the El Estero Lake in Monterey. Last time was fun here, we had 2
wheelers and a couple of marble heads and there is plenty of room on
this Lake, and the wind can pick up here and get the wheelers moving.
I just thought I would mention on here that if anyone in the Bay Area
would like to take their wheeler out on friday the 6th to the Lake in
Monterey, the Location for the upcoming nationals, they would be most
welcome. We had a nice time sailing 5 solings out there a few months
ago, since this Lake has yet to have some Wheelers sailing in it, it
will be interesting to see. Me and Adrian will be going out there, so
2 boats so far, he isnt taking his own boat of course, since he will
start to build his 2 weeks before the nationals according to his
tradition. Anyway, we will be out there between 1-2pm and drop me a
email if you need directions.
Well I just found this yahoo group and thought Id sign in and say hi
to you guys, I hope Jims van works out cause it will be good to see
all those boats out here and skippers too of course. Its a little
drastic, but if you take a sawsall and cut out the roof of the
minivan, leave the rigs mounted on the boats, this will save space and
this can also improve your gas mileage.
p.s. take advantage of your rights, make sure you set up the sails on
starboard.
Please send me a picture of your van when it is loaded up. I am particularly interested in the sail platform, the pipe rack and the way you handle the cradles.
Your description sounds like you must be using some sort of collapsible cradle. If so could you please send a sketch or pic so I can possibly copy. Currently I take the boat to George Walker's pond each weekend by supporting the hull between the tops of the rear two seats and leave the keel on to rest on the seat part of the third row (with plenty of padding to keep the keel from piercing the seat back). My cradle is an awkward beastie and I would really like to change it to something else..
BTY, largely through George's efforts we now have 4 Wheelers here in Columbia. 3 active most weekends and the 4th as "bait" to lure others. George thinks he may have an interested party for another one this fall.
Now if we can just find a larger pond with public visibility we might try to offer to hold the 09 nationals in the sunny south.
The only way I know how to locate the clown car people is to buy a ticket and see the whole show when they are nearby- Good luck
Good Info, Pete. Thanks! I'm driving to Monterey for the 2007 Wheeler Nationals, and want to take as many of our local boats as possible.
I have a Chrysler Town & Country, and am thinking of trading it in on a Honda Odyssey. Anyway, I built-in a rack/platform made of PVC pipe and Plywood that handles two Wheelers (and a bunch of other boats. Using my existing system I can handle four Wheelers pretty easily by placing two in the normal position (below the platform) and two (possibly three) on top of the platform. My thought was to build a second rack/plaform on top of the first, but your idea of foam "noodles" and bubble wrap should solve my problem. BTW, I store the sails flat... in a "special" shelf that hangs from the coat hooks.
The fun part is that the US One Meter Nationals will be held in the LA Area two weeks later, and I'm also planning to take two US1Ms with two rigs each.
How did you say I could get in touch with that clown?

I have certainly never done it but I have some ideas for you to kick around
First you will need a van with 3 rows of seats and enough space between the driver's seat and the rear door (plus a few inches) for the full length of the Wheeler. (my 94 Dodge Grand Caravan has such space)
Take out the rear 2 sets of seats. place 3 boats on their cradles side by side in the back (pad and stabilize as needed).
Go to your local Wal~Mart and get a bunch (6-->8) of the foam "noodles" that the kids use at the pool.
place these across the decks to span across the bottom boats
Remove the keels (and rudders?) from the next 3 boats and load them directly on top of the bottom ones. If you do not want to remove the rudders; place the top row "deck to deck" with the bottom boats on top the noodles.
If you do the deck to deck method be sure to pack (stuff real full) some bubble wrap between the deck and the winch/servo boards to keep them from falling loose and making a real mess of things.
The keels etc can be nested in some bubble wrap or noodle tips between the bottom boats. Radios, batteries, chargers and other spare parts should be able to be placed under the bottom boats or in their cradles.
The real kicker is how to fit the cradles for the top row boats into the remaining space. Perhaps dismantling them or tying to the car top might work.
The other problem will be getting 6 sets of sails to hang or lay flat without inducing wrinkles or stretch. perhaps they will hang from the passenger side coat hook (with a bent wire hooked to the top trim for the heads of the sails at the pass seat up front) one other consideration might be to use a blanket (or more noodles) on top of the top boats and place some lightweight foam board (even cardboard) on that an then lay the 6 sets of sails on that to lay flat. Bubble wrap between mast and the sail below (at possible chafe points)
One thing for sure you will want to check the arrangement often as you move along and adjust as needed.
It will probably look like a giant "Dagwood" sandwich to passing vehicles.
If all else fails; I can only suggest that you contact Ringling Brothers and talk to the guy who stuffs 20 clowns into the Volkswagen.
Hi Mike
Sorry I can't answer your questions as I've never done the conversion
Myself. Heres a link where you might be able to get more information:
http://www.rcsailtalk.com/
As for power it depends on how you wire your servos/receiver/batteries
as to what voltage you see at the servos. If you plug your batteries
into the receiver and let the receiver supply power to the servo
you'll get a reduced voltage. Using a "Y" harness from the batteries
to the receiver and servo will give you the full power supply to both.
