Cool, and scary. Shows the problems with "progress" as it piles up
new on old on older yet and it becomes rather complicated to manage and
even worse to repair. I would hate to be the guy who has to sort out
all those now unlabeled splices...

Thanks Tom.

Not to minimize the effects of the hurricane, but this type of repair goes on every day.

As an electrician, I got to see it up close and personal.  When the big paper machine at Sappi burned up, the mess there made the pics of the Verizon vaults look like child's play.  Sappi was WAY worse because before it got soaked by water, it was in a fire hot enough to melt steel beams.

Two guys with radios can sort out hundreds of wires and cables per hour.  They use electronic tracers which incorporate radio.  A signal is injected at one end of the wire and can be detected with a receiver at the other.  The method is called 'ringing out' for some reason.  It can be done without the tracers, but the process is much slower.

Most underground cable works fine underwater.  The trendways (covered cement trenches) at the Zeeland power plant that carry many thousands of amps are usually full of water and have to be pumped out in order to work on the cables.  It's not the water that is the worry, it's if the water made it through the insulation or not.  Normally, not.

Testing the insulation of the cables can be time consuming, but is way better than just ripping out cables because they got wet.

Imagine the electricians that are working in flooded vaults with electric cables carrying thousands of volts.  That's going on there, too.  I don't think the Verizon guys have to worry much about as far as getting fried from a phone line down there.

Not exactly ham radio related, but I have an electronics gadget which is put together with what my local Ace Hardware describes as "Triangular Recessed Panhead" screws.

I've never seen one of them before this.  Neither Ace nor its outside supplier has a tool to remove such screws.  The people at Ace said screws like this are used for security.

But, I'd like to see what's inside a defective control box.

Anyone know where I might find a screwdriver or something which fits in my drill which could extract something like this.  The screws have a triangular depression in the had, not quite equilateral (at least as measured by eye.)

Private responses seem appropriate.

I think you may find what you need in a set of assorted "security bits"
such as are sold at Lowe's, Menards, HD or Hazard Fraught (aka Harbor

If anyone from the LARC could contact Jhon shaner, he is the one to talk to.
I am going to see about seting up a station at my complex, for any interested kids who want to talk to the 'FAT MAN"

All:

After decades on a tower in North Muskegon, the MAARC has been invited to either pay an exorbitant monthly rent or leave the tower site. We have chosen to retrieve most of our repeater hardware while abandoning the antenna and feed line. We regret this turn of events and we plan to return our repeaters to the air as soon as practical.

Thank you all for your understanding during this period of transition.

Please keep your eyes and ears open for alternatives and news as it is announced.

Well... shoot. Good luck with it.

They were not making any money before, and they still
won't be making any money, or friends, now. Seems
sorta silly to me. I doubt if you guys caused them any
undue expense, and they might have been able to point
to the PR value of letting you remain. Sometimes it is
difficult to see the motivation in it.

Carry on!

Greetings to all Michigan Hams December 8, 2012

This is a special email alert for all Michigan hams concerning our
ongoing PRB-1 effort in Michigan.

I have good news to report in that after a Senate Hearing on December 5,
based on a 3 – 0 vote, SB1244 was passed and is moving onto the Senate
Floor. This means that on December 11, our bill may be voted on by the
Senate. If we are successful there, the bill will move to the House, and
if successful there as well, it could end up on the Governors’ desk for
his signature.

I am asking each Michigan ham to act now and visit
http://www.miarrlprb1.org/ which is our PRB-1 website and click on the
“Update Alert” tab to read the notes from Wednesday’s Senate Committee
Hearing. Please download the “sample” letter available by clicking on
the “What Can I Do?” tab. Simply fill in your senator’s name, add your
name and address at the bottom and email to your senator. There is no
need to add anything to the letter.

You can find your senator’s email address by clicking on the “Find Your
Senator” tab. Some senators have a direct email listed, others may have
a form email where you may have to cut and paste your letter into their
form. Please send a copy to wb8r@... <mailto:wb8r@...> so we
can see how
much of the “market” we are covering and we can send a copy to any
senators who do not get a letter from a constituent. For those that use
an email form, please send a note directly to me at wb8r@...
<mailto:wb8r@...>telling me which senator you sent the letter to
and that you used an
email form.

There is a possibility that our bill may time out if it is not possible
to get the process completed by the end of the legislative session. Not
to worry. We will start all over again in January and already have our
primary sponsor lined up. We have some good support in the Senate and we
feel that we are in good shape.

Thank you in advance for your fine assistance. This is an important
issue and we need to blanket the Senate with our letters.

73,

Larry, WB8R

I was rather impressed with the "Olde Fogeys" around the Daytown Minivention who put on a dinner in conjunction with that event which didn't co$t and arm nor a leg and which generally had an excellent menu, and great speakers, and lots of eyeball QSO's.

Have been meaning to attend one of the events here in Michigan, and I might just make it this Thursday.

QCWA Dinner Meeting this Wednesday, December 13. 5:00 pm. At Whitlow's, 4610 Airline Rd
Muskegon, MI 49444
(231) 739-6379

They're a great bunch, if a little aged and fewer in number. Worth the trip to the restaurant nearby the Lakes Mall just south of Muskegon.

Although Bob, WB8OQT "runs" the QCWA, his work out of town keeps him away from the meetings.

Bill, NA8M

ARMAGEDDON NET
DEFINITION: “the site or time of a final and conclusive battle between the forces
of good and evil” – Webster’s

SITUATION: Both the Mayan calendar and the “fiscal cliff” predict
mayhem around the end of 2012 . This is as good a reason as any to
test our communications skills.

OBJECTIVE: Less than ten percent of Amateur Radio licensees are
registered with an ARES or RACES program. To date, amateur radio
communication exercises have been associated with ARES, RACES
or other official groups. During a disaster, manpower requirements
may well exceed the capacity of this group. Assistance from amateur
radio operators who aren't registered with their local program may
be required. At this point, trained and credentialed ARES or RACES
personnel can become managers, overseeing certain communication
tasks performed by other ham radio volunteers.
This exercise will test the ability for everyone to communicate
on a moment’s notice.

MISSION: This exercise will require the individual amateur radio
operator to make contact with any other amateur radio station.
EXECUTION: All amateur radio stations should monitor the VHF
calling frequency 146.520 FM, or an alternate HF frequency of
28.375 USB. The exercise will have a duration of 30 minutes. When
the frequency is clear, contact can be initiated with the preamble
“CQ the Armageddon Net” followed by your call sign.

Log your contacts.

ADDITIONAL TASKS: Prior to the event, local amateur radio
clubs will promote the event.

More information to follow as the month progresses- Stay tuned.

December 13, 2012 marks the centennial anniversary of perhaps the the most important event in amateur radio history in the USA. The Radio Law of 1912, passed in August 1912 became effective on December 13, 1912. Radio schools at naval yards and army posts were crowded with amateurs of all levels of experience to get a license from the Department of Commerce.

Irving Vermilya, 1HAA, later W1ZE, became the first licensed amateur in the USA being issued Certificate of Skill #1 and is known for all time as Amateur Number One. A number of other amateurs followed suit and rather than seeing amateur radio die out as the Law's authors obviously intended, amateur radio began to flourish with a combination of adopting new technology (Edwin H. Armstrong invented the regenerative receiver in September 1912) for reception and later transmitting (CW emissions became feasible after the World War) along with organizing message relay routes. Amateurs led the way finding that the wavelengths shorter than 200 meters were not useless through the new technologies and, by the early 1920s, a declining solar cycle that enabled communications not only for transcontinental paths, but intercontinental as well.

A century later we enjoy this hobby of amateur radio precisely due to the unintended consequence of a law designed to kill amateur radio that did not state its intention exactly and instead allowed it to live and thrive for 15 years! In 1927 more comprehensive radio legislation was enacted and in 1934 the Communications Act created the FCC that we know today.

For more information visit the United States Early Radio History site by Thomas H. White. Thomas' site is not limited to amateur radio, however, and is quite comprehensive on a lot of radio topics. The ARRL publication, 200 Meters and Down by Clinton B. Desoto documents much of the early amateur radio history. An article by David Newkirk, ex WJ1Z, now W9VES, The Coming of The Law (available to ARRL members), published in the November 1993 issue of QST also documents the forces behind the enactment of the Radio Law of 1912 and how radio amateurs responded to it. The December 2012 issue of CQ has The Radio Act of 1912: A Century of Radio Regulation and Licensing by Rich Moseson, W2VU, providing another perspective on this red letter day. Certainly, more articles on this topic have been published over the years and make for good reading.

As of December 13, 2012 amateur radio will officially be 100 years old complete with examinations and licenses. Happy anniversary!
