Subject: World's Smallest Radio - Things not mentioned in the article.....
k8mhz
Send Email Send Email

Some things were not mentioned in the article and hams aren't getting much publicity for their inventions for some reason.  This from QRZ:

"I invented this exact thing in the mid 90s and now have 7 issued patents on it.

Check out my profile on qrz.com to see it. Or just go to
http://www.ambitcorp.com for a pdf

Look for any one of the patents on carbon nanotubes. We grow them right on the semiconducting junction. It's a lot smaller than the "palm of a fly" in fact, thousands of times smaller than that.

w1xyz"

Now, that being said, I am a bit uncomfortable about a radio that can be injected into a person and possibly be used to track them.  Such an injection could be done surreptitiously under the guise of inoculation, medication or with a very small projectile fired from a distance with a very small, silent weapon.  Upon entering the body, that projectile would only cause a sensation similar to an insect bite if any at all and would be very hard to notice.  Tracking people is just one possibility.  Such a radio may also be used to do harm in ways we have not even come close to imagining yet.  Granted, my thoughts are indeed pessimistic, but given the track record of humans and their use of anything and everything as weapons provides an unquestionable premise for my suspicions.

I recommend keeping an eye on the nanotube radio and both it's use and possible mis-use in the future.

In the QRZ thread I provided a link to you will see a comment from Dr. Nathan 'Chip' Cohen, W1YW, the inventor of the fractal antenna.  This is his company:

Notice the pictures on the web site and the logo on the left.  Fractals are being used by the military.

Both of the above hams hail from Massachusetts.  Chip used to be a professor at Boston University.  To check their profiles go to www.qrz.com and enter their call signs in the box in the upper right corner of the screen marked 'callsign'.  I highly recommend doing so.

The silencer for firearms was invented by Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW, the founder of the ARRL.

"Maxim is also noted as the inventor of the "Maxim Silencer" or Suppressor for firearms (patented in 1909) as well as of a silencer (or muffler) for gasoline engines."

Hiram Percy Maxim was the son of Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, the inventor of the Maxim Machine Gun, the first portable fully automatic machine gun.

Lest we forget, the Nobel Peace Prize's huge monetary awards comes from the interest from the money earned by Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite.  He invented it to make mining safer.  Rumor has it that his guilt for the invention which was eventually used to kill people on a scale never before imagined led to the establishment of the prize that bears his name.

Never forget....any tool can be used as a weapon.

73 and Peace be with all of us,

Mark K8MHZ

I thought this would be an interesting article. They didn't mention
how many watts, or most likely mW that this puts out.

The World's Smallest Radio by Prachi Patel-Predd
A tiny radio made out of a single carbon nanotube could ultimately
find use in biological and environmental sensors.

All:

The leash my doctor has me on is getting longer and longer. I'm not
to return to the eye doctor for another month. In the meantime I can
get a new pair of glasses, return to driving a car, and begin weaning
my eye of the drops. The doctor won't say the detached retina is
cured. He will say I can begin returning to my more normal routine.

I'll be keeping an "eye" on the situation and babying the eye for the
next several months. Others have eventually almost forgotten the
discomfort of the cure and recovery. I'm hopeful.

This event has surely shown me the Huge power of prayer. I thank each
of you for your kind words and prayers. This has been one onerous
recovery made more manageable with your words and thoughts.

Thank You!!

There was a rumor that the Titanic was the first to use SOS. According to
this article they were not. It had been adopted years eailier. It also tells
the meaning of CQD which was used before SOS. CQ representing a general call
(i.e., "seek you") to other ships and D for danger.

Very interesting reading, Take a look.

Hello Everyone ....

Please pass the word to your usual contacts that the annual
Hudsonville Holiday Parade is Saturday, November 17, and we could use
quite a few volunteers for traffic control. Most, if not all, of our
positions to cover are residential streets, where vehicle lighting
and other special equipment is not necessary. (The Sheriff's Office
is covering the high-traffic intersections.)

The briefing will be at the Hudsonville EOC at 9:00 a.m. The parade
is scheduled to start at 10:00 and should end before 11:30.

Anyone can respond directly to me by email or phone with their
availability or any questions.

Thank you.

~ Dave.

Greetings to all.

This has very little to do with amateur radio, but it seems that many
folks that are involved in amateur radio are also involved in geocaching.

I started a group called West Michigan Geocaching in yahoo groups (can
anybody guess where I got the idea for the name??).

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/westmichigangeogaching/join

If you are interested or participate in geocaching visit the group and
sign up. Hopefully it will promote geocaching in the area.

Happy caching!

Geocaching rocks!!

The best one around Muskegon is 'Sherman's End', a 3 tier cache with a great view of Lake Michigan.  It's a bit too cold to really enjoy it now, but for a summer hike Sherman's End can't be beat.  A little geo-trivia....when you find the first cache you can work many repeaters with your HT due to the height.

Count me in.  I will be joining your group!

My favorite is whatcha wanna call it in Fremont at Branstrom park. It
is a multi stage that has a lot of neat challenging hides. It took me
a good week of lunch hours, and some emails to the Farmboy to solve
that one. Very fun hobby along with ham radio!!

Grow Your Club With New Hams
By Norm Fusaro, W3IZ

One of the most frequently asked questions that we hear from ARRL
affiliated clubs is "How can we increase membership in our club?" On
the surface the solution is a simple one - make more hams. A
foundation of active Amateur Radio operators is required in order to
maintain a healthy Amateur Radio club. If you lack a sufficient pool
of licensed hams in your area then create some. Clubs that conduct
licensing classes where they make recruitment part of the lesson
continually increase membership. It does not matter if the course is
an eight week program or a weekend crash course, a good instructor
will pepper the syllabus with the advantages of membership in the
local club and the Radio Amateur's national association -- ARRL.

Providing a license course for those people in the community who are
interested in learning about Amateur Radio demonstrates the club's
commitment to helping people. Reinforcing Amateur Radio's tradition
of helping each other let's the new hams know that they are not just
getting a license to operate a radio but that they are also earning a
ticket to become part of a worldwide society whose existence is built
on mutual contact. Whether on the air or in the community Amateur
Radio has always been a two-way function.

From the moment the license class begins new hams need to know that
your club is there to help them as they begin their Amateur Radio
journey. This relationship begins not in the classroom but at the
time of registration or when that first contact is made whether in
person or on the telephone or through the internet.

As the class progresses the new ham is made aware of the reciprocal
bond between hams and while the novice may not believe that he or she
has something to offer at the moment, their attendance and a desire
to belong is sufficient contribution. As long as the club maintains
a friendly environment that encourages participation and supports
activities the novice will soon become the Elmer to the next group of
new hams and will eventually take on leadership positions in the
club. However, a club is destined to fade away if they choose to
adopt the attitude "build it and they will come."

Be sure to invite the new licensees to your next club meeting. Using
written invitations is a nice touch and sends a message that you
really want them to attend. The focus of this meeting should be on
your new hams and getting them into the mainstream. Several clubs
have organized the meeting following a license class using the "Ham
Radio 101" format where the entire evening's programming is to show
the novices the basics of operating. Have refreshments on hand and
be ready to talk about the fun activities such as Field Day or a
community activity that your club is involved in. This is not the
meeting where want to discuss politics or topics that will embattle
the membership. Keep it light and focused on the needs of the
newcomers.

New hams are thirsty for information no matter how basic. When and
where are the club meetings held? How do I get on the air? What
does this or that term mean? Be prepared to answer the simplest
questions and provide details when you do. The Mt. Baker club in
Bellingham Washington has developed a great handout for new hams that
helps answer some of these questions. With Mt. Baker's permission
ARRL has made this booklet available to download and customize for
your use. The modified version provides a place for your club to
insert club and local information.
>
Use this brochure or develop one of your own but in any case be sure
to give your new hams something informative to take home with them.

A closing thought when working with new hams, one person's favorite
activity is not all that ham radio has to offer. Meeting programs
and mentor sessions should stimulate new hams to explore the many
options offered to the licensed radio amateur. Organizing and
teaching an Amateur Radio license class where the students are
encouraged to be a part of the fabric of ham radio and invited to
participate in club activities is guaranteed to increase your club's
membership with active hams.

The Four Is
- Invite
- Inform
- Inspire
- Involve

Invite

- Invite everyone, the new hams and those who have not yet
received their CSCE, to attend the next club meeting where the
program will be based on things that the new ham will need to know.
- Invitations should be in the form of hard copy with day, date
and time. Hand an invitation to each student personally at the end of
the class or mail the invitations to everyone that attended the
class. A big shout out to come to the next meeting lacks sincerity.

Inform

- Provide a packet of information that has contact information
for people who can help the new ham get on the air.
- It's also a good idea to provide club information as well as
some operating aids like a list of local repeaters and how to access
them.

Inspire

- Congratulate your new hams and remind them that they have
just completed the first step toward a life long journey of learning
and fun.
- Encourage those who were not successful this time around to
keep trying because the reward is worth the effort.

Involve

- Welcome new members to your club and to the world of Amateur
radio.
- Encourage the new hams to participate in club functions and
on the air activities. Make sure that they know they are welcome to
join the next on the air net, fox hunt or other club activity.

ARRL Awards Program For Clubs

Looking for an exciting way to challenge your club? Try earning
DXCC, Worked All States (WAS) or VUCC award for your club. ARRL
affiliated clubs are eligible to participate in all of the ARRL
awards programs.
If your club does not have a station then use the club call from a
member's station. Operate portable ala Field Day and activate a rare
grid square. Use your imagination to come up with ideas to activate
your club call and involve your members in chasing some very nice
operating awards.
Complete information on the ARRL awards program is available on the
web at:

Greetings All.

I'm Still looking for help on the Hoffmaster Trail Run.

The run will be held at Hoffmaster State Park in Norton Shores this Saturday
November 17, 2007. The race itself starts at 10AM. But, due to the distances
and terrain we have to travel to get in position we need to be there at
8:45AM. The event will run no later that Noon.

I am looking for at least 12 people to help me. Once again we will be using
a portable repeater supplied by AB8AZ.
The repeater frequency is 147.220 with a standard PLUS offset (147.820) and
a PL/CTCSS of 94.8. This will make it easier to setup your radios.

Directions to Hoffmaster State Park.

For those using the US-31 Expressway get off at the Pontaluna Rd exit. Go
west on Pontaluna RD approximately 2 miles and when the road starts to curve
to the right the Entrance to the park will be on the Left. If you need
assistance talkin will be on the Muskegon 94 repeater. Once you get to the
park turn right at the first road after you pass the permit shack. You
should be able to get into the park without a permit or having to buy a one
day pass.

If you can help contact me at n8ctt@... or my cell phone 231-670-1284.

WRC-07 Wraps Up in Geneva; Will Likely Meet Again in 2011

The final working session of the 2007 World Radiocommunication
Conference (WRC-07) in Geneva drew to a close Thursday afternoon,
November 15. The signing ceremony for the Final Acts will take place
Friday. According to International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Secretary
David Sumner, K1ZZ, the principal achievements and disappointments, as
they relate to the Amateur Services, of the conference are:

Achievements

• Maintenance all existing amateur allocations, including the
7.200-7.300 MHz allocation in ITU Region 2 (the Americas) that had been
somewhat at risk in connection with consideration of additional
allocations for HF broadcasting (see below).

• A new worldwide secondary allocation at 135.7-137.8 kHz with a maximum
radiated power limit of 1 W e.i.r.p. (given the low efficiency of
practical antennas for this frequency range, this limit is not as severe
as it may sound).

• Inclusion of an item, "to consider an allocation of about 15 kHz in
parts of the band 415-526.5 kHz to the Amateur Service on a secondary
basis, taking into account the need to protect existing services" on the
provisional agenda for WRC-11 (set for 2011).

• Avoidance of future agenda items that pose serious threats to key
amateur allocations.

• Some improvement in the so-called "country footnotes" that provide for
different allocations by country in all or part of the 1.8, 3.5, 50 and
430 MHz amateur bands.

Disappointments

• No new allocation for the Amateur Service in the vicinity of 5 MHz,
and no agenda item to consider such an allocation at a future conference.

• No future agenda item to consider an amateur allocation at 50 MHz in
ITU Region 1 (Europe, the former Soviet Union, Mongolia, Africa and
parts of the Middle East).

"No Change" for Amateur Allocations, HF Broadcasting

The amateur issues were of course a minor part of the WRC-07 agenda, but
the Amateur Service was involved in one of the most contentious agenda
items dealing with allocations between 4 and 10 MHz. A series of
European Common Proposals had proposed changes to allow for an increase
of 350 kHz in HF broadcasting allocations, with a footnote for
administrations to allow the Amateur Service to use 5.260-5.410 MHz on a
secondary basis and with a radiated power limit of 250 W; however, HF
broadcasting had no support from the other regional organizations and no
compromise acceptable to all parties could be found. Ultimately the
European administrations had to accept "no change" for broadcasting,
effectively scuttling our chances for a 5 MHz allocation.

Next WRC Tentatively Set for 2011

The IARU had hoped that if an allocation could not be achieved at
WRC-07, an appropriate agenda item could be included for WRC-11. The
2007 conference, however, had little interest in taking up HF issues at
the next conference, tentatively set for 2011, having little to show for
a great deal of effort expended on HF in preparing for WRC-07. The only
HF issues on the provisional WRC-11 agenda have to do with oceanographic
radar applications and the implementation of new digital technologies
for the maritime mobile service.

The International Telecommunication Union's planning for the next World
Radiocommunication Conference begins on Monday in Geneva, with the
convening of a two-day Conference Preparatory Meeting for WRC-11. Paul
Rinaldo, W4RI, will attend on behalf of the IARU.

After some software updates and a computer crash on my part, and
finding time, the EMWIN transmitter is back on line in Fremont on
163.300. Also, the Fremont repeater on 146.920 pl 94.8 is running on
one of my backup repeaters and seems to have a lot better range than
before. Give it a try. It is a bit quirky right now, but I am hoping
to get the bugs out soon.

Thanks to all who participated at the Hoffmaster Trail Run yesterday
(11-17-07). Once again we had a great event.

We had 15 participants this year. This includes Darryl AB8AB who supplied
and setup the portable repeater we used. This years route was the same as
last year, but due to the numbers of helpers we were able to add a 3rd
position on the beach (halfway point) and double up a few other positions
which gave us more and better coverage then we have had in previous years.

Dave Paulsen our contact with the race people once again expressed their
thanks for our assistance which made their job much easier.

Once again thanks to all of you who helped out with years Hoffmaster Trail
Run. I'm looking forward to seeing you again next year.

Chris,Handi-Hams was going to be my first stop.Met a 16yrl.kid up here in Fremont.Deaf from birth,no real speech capabilities. Not even much of a lip reader, but full American sign.Schools in Flint. He only has mom to sign with, hay it's Fremont. There isn't really anyone else up here that is in his situation, let a lone age.I have a code reader program he could see running. But I'm thinking some code audio on a speaker he can feel, toss a copy of the code/alphabet in front of him and I bet he makes the connection in 2 seconds.Let me see what Handi-Hams recommends for a proper intro through.Thank you Sir.
