I just got off the phone with a mutual Non-SCA friend who told me Clare
Elene (Kerri Geppert) our Equestrian Martial, had a run in with a horse
Saturday (yesterday) at the State Fair in a non SCA related event. She
was taken to the hospital, and was diagnosed with a compound fracture of
her leg (I don’t know which part of which leg) and a broken collar bone.
Surgery to reassemble her leg was performed today, and she is expected
to be released from the hospital soon. She has a working support network
of friends in place to help her. She will not be going home, but will
instead be staying with a friend in Eagle River. (I do not have a name,
address or phone number.) Her husband, son, daughter and Principal have
all been notified.

I apologize, but this is ALL the information I have at this time, and
all of it is third hand. If I get any more information I will pass it on
through this channel.

Hopefully, everyone has now heard that Aaron, Tarnmist's resident "Muck Fairy"
has at
long last entered into horse ownership. It is one thing to get a horse, it is
another to
get said horse to the new barn...and so our story begins....

Ellen is the only one in the Barony, who first has a horse trailer, and second
has a
vehicle with enough horsepower to pull it. This means that whenever there is an
EQ
event, a horse needs to be moved, or any sort of heavy transport needs to be
done,
she is usually in the thick of it. Since for the past week Creston, (where our
horses
are and the trailer is stored), has been in the triple digits, Aaron, Susan,
and Ellen
decided to meet up at 10am, to get an early start before things got too hot.
Yes, this
is the same truck that the vermin managed to chew through the power steering
belt
on. Plan was to fix the belt, hook up and go move the horse. Easy right....
Problem.
The belt that broke is the BACK belt. This means that the other belt must be
removed
before anything else is done. While working on pulling the belt, which Ford in
it's
infinite wisdom did not make an easy task, a tool slipped and the alternator
case
cracked.... So now not only does the belt need replacing, but so does the
alternator...grrrr. Finally get the belt off...which also looks as if it has
been snacked
on (and there is still bait in the truck, so what they are doing munching on
rubber is
beyond me), and figure as long as they are making a trip into town to get parts,
might
as well get another belt and have done with this. Thankfully, find a place that
is open,
and also has the needed parts. $170+ later, back to see if the truck can be
resurrected. By now, it is afternoon, and the heat has begun to radiate off of
the
ground,(110+). People are starting to eye the horse trough with favor.
Sprinkler
turned on in the round pen and joyfully run through.

Finally get the truck fixed...its alive! Only running a few hours behind
schedule. After
a through search of the engine compartment to make sure there are no fuzzy,
beady
eyed "Murphys" trying to participate in the squirrel relocation program , now,
just
need to hitch the trailer.

One important plot point is that the trailer tongue wheel had an issue a few
weeks
back, and had been removed for repair. Since that time, the trailer has been
blocked
with the tongue sitting on some very hefty stumps. All well and good, except
for the
thunder and lightening storm that had gone through and dropped just enough rain
to
swell the stump to the point that the trailer can not be hitched and the stump
removed anymore. So, now, the truck and trailer are hitched up, and not going
anywhere anytime soon. They try rocking, pushing pulling and finally Aaron has
to
dig the stumps out from under the trailer. OK. The truck and trailer can now
move,
but the the truck has no back up lights (though the trailer doesn't seem
affected), and
the left turn signal on both vehicles is not working. After being stuck in 100+
weather, for many hours, no one much cares. Aaron and Susan can follow the
trailer
down so that should cover the signal issue.

Now about this time in the story, usually, the horse decides to make a big issue
out of
something, not load, or decide that the trailer is actually a horse eating cave.
Thankfully, Jewels did none of the above, and calmly walked in to be taken to
her new
home. As fried as everyone in the group was, I doubt anyone could have taken
horse
fu at that point, (Susan said something about horse shish kebab if she didn't
load). It
seemed Murphy had decided to give everyone a bit of a break. Jewels traveled
calmly
to her new stable, and only was a bit confused with being in a longer trailer (I
KNOW
that step is someplace around here). Got out, went into the arena, and
ROLLED...nice
cool sand. All things horse wise now settled, time to take the truck and
trailer up to
Los Osos, since Ellen's Lord happens to be down for the weekend, and luckily
enjoys
challenges of vehicular nature. By the time Ellen and the trailer get to Los
Osos, it is
getting dark. The little venture that was supposed to take a few hours, has
eaten up
the day. Too late to work on lights now, stow the rig and go get dinner.
Vehicle
lights are put on the to do list.

Sunday is spent unwinding out on the lake. A fun time is had by all, though
unfortunately, Susan came down with a migraine from the heat the day before and
she
and Aaron are unable to go play on the water. Lake is pleasant, not crowded,
and
there is no major boat fu. We even mange to keep the group together...have now
learned that sending the guys out ahead with the boat and the beer, planing on
meeting up at the lake is a BAD idea. Rested and recharged, it is now time to
revisit
the to do list.

Los Osos has the advantage of thinking that temperatures in the 80's are too
hot, so
my dog and I escape the 100+ degrees (sorry horses) and go down to help with
projects in cooler climes. Brad has gotten the trailer fender banged back into
shape,
and welded back into place (see past stories). Also finds that the rivet
holding the
back door latch on the trailer, needs to be replaced. Add another item to the
list.
Figuring that the trucks issue is a simple fuse, this is pushed to the back of
the line.
Other items are also added since about an hour after I get to the house, my
front tire
is flat....there are many projects going on around my place, and not everyone is
careful about picking up nails (so far, the count is 4 tires).

OK, got most of the other projects done, now go pull the fuse and see what type
is
needed to replace. Find the fuse, pull it and... oh oh, nothing wrong with it.
Houston,
we have a problem. Look at the back of the truck and notice a wire hanging that
we
had assumed only led to the license plate light. OK, time to investigate this a
bit.
Look under the truck and find disaster! Captain, the Mynocks have been chewing
on
the power cables!!!! The nasty little vermin have been very busy! I don't
think there
is a wire that has not been nearly chewed through. One bundle of four have been
completely severed, leaving only a stub on the plug side. Both the blue wire
and
yellow wire are cut in half as are many others. OK, Brad looks at the truck,
not
knowing why ANY lights have been working. There is some growling that THIS was
not on the list, as he disappears under the truck. There is also much muttering
of
how to zap the vermin if they so much as touch paw to the vehicle. Finally, the
entire
rear light assembly is pulled and much soldering is done. Ellen and I both
point out
that the truck and trailer CAN remain where they are for a few weeks, but this
is man
verses squirrel, and the vermin will not be given victory.

The truck now has back up lights, and both turn signals working. Ellen's Lord
is only
slightly late in his exodus to the North, and we even manage to spend a bit of
time
with another friend before it is time to turn into pumpkins.

So, the "Murphy Saga" continues. Who needs gremlins, when you have beady eyed,
fuzzy "Murphys" with nasty sharp teeth, that invade the vehicle. Now it just
remains
to be seen how much other squirrel damage there is, and if it can be fixed in
time for
the planned trips. Does anyone have a trick to keeping the "Mynocks from
chewing
on the power cables"?

Ellen is still also STILL sick. She is awaiting the test results to see if she
has Whooping
Cough, or Valley Fever. If negative for either of those, they will test for
Lyme Disease,
West Nile, and Q Fever!

we

My landlord got one of those traps that the squirrels are supposed to pack
themselves like sardines into...didn't work. Because of the dog and cat
population out
here, I'm afraid to put something out that will impale, or use poison. Have to
look
into other traps!

My landlord also has a contraption called the Rodentator. It pumps explosive
gas
down the holes and blows them up. Unfortunately, this only seems to work for a
limited time. There are always more squirrels! As dry as everything is, the
Rodentator will have to wait till the winter rains come, so as to not start
fires.

Yeah - it's that or park your truck in a steel box that is vacuumed
out so there's no oxygen, and keep it that way (airtight)...anybody
got friends at NASA who want to give away a really powerful vacuum?

I wanted to give everyone an update on what happened to me last weekend at the
Alaska State Fair. The state fair always holds a fireworks display on the last
Friday of the fair. We had taken our horses out of the small stalls and had
planned on taking them to a clear area away from the barns. The fireworks
display started before we reached our planned space and two of the four horses
spooked. I was basically in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Emily's horse
spooked and bumped into Mahadi who then knocked me down. I couldn't get out of
the way fast enough and got run over by both horses, neither of who stepped on
me. (Which proves that horses don't intentionally step on people if they can
avoid it) My right leg is broken right below the knee cap and my right collar
bone is broken. I'm wheel chair bound for the next six weeks while the leg
heals.

A lot of folks have asked if I will get around horses again and I have to say
"Of course!" I've been around horses for about 40 years and this is the worse
accident I have ever been in. You take all the safety measures you can and
sometimes things still happen. I hope the Alaska State Fair reconsiders how
they hold their fireworks displays - basically they set them off while people
are leaving when the fair closes for the night. People are walking to parking
lots, driving cars out of lots, cars backed up on roads and animals on the
fairgrounds are going bonkers. Every year there seems to be an incident with
the horse show animals; this just happened to be the first year that a person
was injured. Hind sight is always 20-20 and we will plan to do things a little
differently next year.

I'm anxiously awaiting the OK to get back in the saddle and continue my
equestrian adventures. Thank you all for your well wishes.

Ah - fireworks and other things that go 'boom' stories.

We had fireworks go off at night near our horses. All are dead broke
to noises - 2 are gun broke. Shined the flashlight and everyone seemed
fine.

One of the gun broke ones was found in the am with one leg through the
fnce - quietly and calmly waiting to be freed. Must have spooked or
been shoved when soemone else spooked

Wow!

You think they would give "Advanced!" Warning on that type of thing.

Seems though us Horse People get the worst of the bumps and bruises!

I know it is usually the things we dont expect to happen, or "How in
the world did that spook my horse!"... things that get us or should I
say them..

Greetings West Kingdom Equestrians,

The West hosted horses at five Crown/Principality events mostly focus on educating riders, groundcrew and the populace about horses in the SCA:

Cynagua Playday, June 16
June Crown, June 23-25
Arts & Sciences Tourney, July 28-29
Oertha Equestrian Event/Demo, Aug 11
Purgatorio Coronation, Aug 24-26

Four practices sponsored by local branches continue to support equestrian arts at the grassroots level by providing saddle-time and hands-on horse experience that is invaluable to improving individual horsemanship skills.

The marshallate remains strong and is increasing it's numbers through our Marshal-in-Training program.  Several MiT's have met the experience requirement, and only need to pass the written test to advance to EQM status.  Cynagua has a new Equestrian Minister, and I would like to thank Komitessa Aurora for her dedicated service during the time she held the office.

We haven't had a general business meeting since April, and it would be a good idea to get better organized for our upcoming events if we have a time and place agreeable to the group for the next one.  Is there a volunteer to host it?  Best time and place?  Interested in a workshop?

The next few months will be very busy with more events and practices.  Be sure to take note of those you are interested in and communicate with the people coordinating the activities.

Yours in Service to the West,

Gwendwyn the Silent,
West Kingdom Equestrian Officer

First off, Clare, I'm glad to hear that you are going to be ok. It's
always frustrating when the horse didn't read the plan book.

Secondly, for those who haven't had a chance to play with horses
around firworks (yet). I have noticed a few things that work fairly
well. (At the LA County Fairgrounds, they set the fireworks off over
the racetrack, which mean they land over the show barns.)

1) If at all possible, let the horse see what is going on. The noise
scares the snot out of them. The light intrigues them. If they
begin to associate the light with the noise, 98% of them will settle
down and watch the show.

2) If the horses are in an enclosed area when the fireworks are
about to go off, leave them in an enclosed area (arena, stall,
whatever). If all hell breaks loose (ie they are part of that other
2%), turn them loose so that you are not attached. Show staff will
generally try to hustle you out of the ring when they know the
fireworks are coming. If you don't have time to get out of the ring
and get the horse safely untacked and either put away or in a safe
area. Refuse to leave the ring. Tell them to close the arena
gates.

3) Stay Calm. Whenever possible try to have more knowledgable
bodies then horses for any horse not in a stall. Make sure someone
is in charge in case the plan needs to change.

4) If you have babies, now is a great time to haul them to
fairgrounds that do fairworks displays. Ventura County has a
fireworks display, a train tracks next to the show ring, and a
beach. My red mare started going there when she was four months old.

That's all of mine. Does anyone else have some?

I think you got most of it.. The only thing I would add is it is a
good idea to get them used to it prior to the actual "big" event.

I run the local De-Spooking Clinic in Santa Cruz and we usually have
fireworks.. Now these are the small pop, spit and smoke kind but they
are enough to begin working your horse through them.

From my experiance some horses are cool with them, some are not. Some
seem to be in the middle and just need a bit of support.

I would recommend to anyone to take advantage of these de-spooking
clinics and mounted patrol training exercises. Also, if you have CMS
( cowboy mounted shooting ) in your area, its great to take the
horses along to hangout and get used to the noise and hubbub..

On #3 I'd add to make sure if more than one knowledge person is in close proximity of the horse that they stay on the same side as the person attached to the horse with the lead.  That way when the horse spins around the handler, the back end isn't now in the additional person's face...or the horse's body slamming into the person, etc.

(This is also why you as the handler change sides when holding the horse for a farrier so that you always stay on the same side as the farrier, vet, etc....)

Greetings All!

Richard and Elisabeth here...again!

As you may have seen in previous posts there WILL be Equestrian activities at Cynaguan Coronet (10/26-28/07) at the Camelot Equestrian Center in Butte Valley, CA.  Camelot Equestrian Park  Clark Road (Hwy 191)  Butte Valley, CA  530-521-2122

Directions as per the Camelot Equestrian Park website (www.camelotequestrianpark.com):
From Redding or Chico- Hwy 99 South to Durham Pentz Exit, turn left on to Pentz Road, at 4-way stop turn right on to Clark Road (Hwy 191) follow Clark Road to Camelot Entrance.
From Sacramento- Hwy 99 North to Durham Pentz Road exit right to Pentz Road, at 4-way stop turn right on to Clark Road (Hwy 191) follow Clark Road to Camelot Entrance.
From Marysville or Oroville- Hwy 70 North to Hwy 191 (Clark Road), left on Hwy 191 to Camelot Entrance.

We hope to have a full schedule of activates (currently carved in semi-frozen Jell-O) for the equestrian enthusiast and all interested parties. We have an update on the rental situation too. Keep on reading.

Here is the information we have on the site as it pertains to horses and their riders/owners:

Weekend rate per horse: $20.00 (for the WHOLE weekend) You provide cleaning/feeding. This is a great rate!
We have access to the large uncovered arena (firm footing), one large turnout corral, 1250 acres of trails (it's a 3-Day event course)
and 15 to 20 semi-portable 20x20 pipe stall/corrals. Oh...350 acres for camping as well!
Lots of shade trees on site.
The arena does not have bleachers so bring your chairs.
We are looking into the possibility of rentals. Assume that IF rentals become available the per horse fee will added to the rental. More details to follow as we get them.
Water on site is fine for livestock but has not been tested for human consumption.

NO RENTAL HORSES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME!  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RIDING AND DON'T OWN OR HAVE ACCESS TO A HORSE YOU MAY NEED TO MAKE OTHER ARRANGEMENTS. THOSE HORSE OWNERS WHO ARE COMFORTABLE LENDING OUT THEIR MOUNTS FOR A BRIEF PERIOD OF TIME PLEASE CONTACT ELISABETH AT scederborg@... AND LET HER KNOW THE SKILL LEVEL OF THE RIDER NEEDED AND WHAT FORM OF COMPENSATION YOU WOULD EXPECT. THANK YOU!

A semi-firm schedule of activities (carved in semi-frozen Jell-O) is as follows:
Friday: arrive, set up and relax. Nothing is currently slated.
Saturday:
9:00-10:30AM: Authorizations
10:30 12:30: IKEQ Games and Scores
12:30-1:30: Break/Meet-n-Greet
1:30-3:30: Mounted Games of Skill...not a competition but a series of skill games to test your equitation and riding ability. It WILL be fun! Promise!
3:30-4:00: Break/Meet-n-Greet
4:00-5:00 More games (we'll see what folks are interested in) and other fun activities. if we have interest we could do some jousting or other skill.
5:00-6:30 (after court but before "dinner"): Trail ride
Sunday: 9:00 AM Horse 101 Class for those interested

Of course this schedule will comply with Courts, Finals and other activities as best we can.

If YOU want to see something done "Equestrian-wise" at Cyngua Coronet please drop us a note!

So....HORSES will be at Cynagua Coronet. Elisabeth and I will be asking for volunteers soon for the various "tasks" that having our equine pals at an event bring with it. We will be posting more details as we get them organized (the event is three months out) but PLEASE plan on bringing your horses! We will have FUN! Promise. We would LOVE to see our Mists brothers and sisters attend and enjoy this wonderful HORSE FRIENDLY site! We will need GROUND-CREW, MARSHALS and of course RIDERS! Please volunteer to pitch in where and when you can!

If you have any HORSE RELATED questions regarding  Cynagua Coronet PLEASE contact Elisabeth or myself.

Thank you!

You know, that is one of those "Duh" things!

Like.. Wow that makes so much sense! After I thought about it!

I know when I started hoof trimming training with my kids when I
would ask someone to hold them I would have to remind them to stay on
my side... Otherwise I would get knocked over when the horse started
to turn on the fore...

I think this is also one reason why it is safer to have everyone
mounted then to have a few people on the ground and everyone else
mounted...

The site has a Western competition sized sand arena and plenty of parking. I will fence off an area outside of the arena for warming up.

Eq. camping and parking will be right next to the horses and the arena. There is potable water on site. You will need to bring your own corrals. Other than that, bring all the usual.

We will be inviting the members of the group that own/control the campgrounds to participate in our Eq. activities.

We will be running and scoring IKEqC. There are 15 miles of trails for horseback riding. ( http://www.ncfaa.com/skyline/trails.htm ) There is a request that we have a "Horse 101" type class. Anyone want to take charge of this? (I should point out that we only have the arena on Saturday, but the area I rope off will be available until I take it down from Friday through Sunday.)

I am also looking for someone to be either EqMiC or Eq Autocrat. (Or, if I get 2 volunteers, I would gladly welcome both!) Please email me privately as I am still behind on reading this list.

I am looking into specifics like bedding restrictions, more about the labeled horse camping info, etc. I will send an updates as I find out.

Hi Everyone,

It appears I have won the Disease behind door #3. My tests came back
positive for Pertussis (Whooping Cough) and now have only 5 days of
antibiotics ahead of me. (I say won because the other choices were
Lyme's, West Nile, Valley Fever, or really bad allergies). Hopefully
will be feeling my old self soon. Brad and Kristin will go on the
drugs as a precaution since I have been in closest contact with them.

Hi Ellen
Glad you finally got a diagnosis. I was starting to get really worried about you! Everytime I heard from you or Kristin, you were so sick! Hope you are feeling better very soon. Your friends in Altavia all wish you and the rest of our horse-friends in Tarnmist the best of health....Now if you could just figure out a way to outwit Murphy and Moe, those intrepid, truck-vandalizing squirrels, all will be well for you, eh?

Get well soon, dear lady! We look forward to exploring Tarnmist with you again very soon (on a horse of course!) My mother (she who is owned by the feistiest little Peruvian Paso mare you've ever met!) goes under the knife later this month for a total ankle replacement and will be recuperating at my place thru most of October so trips anywhere (including to your fair kingdom) will be on hold for a while. At most I may be able to day trip to Great Western War but that's about all I can expect for a while.

Take care of yourself, Ellen!

Hi all! Jena, here.
I have a friend who lives in Bakersfield, and worked throughout the oilfields that surround the area of the war. These are her words:
" Due to west nile outbreak here you better bring some deet! You will be
camping right next to a major mosquito source here in the valley, they
have had near 100+ cases of it here this summer, a few deaths."
So, everyone planning to go to the war, be warned.Take precautions with yourselves and your horses.

Human West Nile Cases in CA:
2007 – 172
2006 - 278
2005 – 880
2004 – 779
2003 – 3
2002 – 1
2001 – 0

As with most infectious disease in a naοve population, there is a
lovely attack rate curve generated. For Calfornia, we appear to be
past the peak. I'm not sure if we are still decreasing or leveling
off.

Kern County
2006: Human – 51; Horses – 4; Dead Birds – 24; Mosquito Samples –
230; Sentinel Chickens – 92; Squirrels - 0
2007: Human – 100; Horses – 3; Dead Birds – 106; Mosquito Samples –
194; Sentinel Chickens – 50; Squirrels – 0

It's interesting that Kern County has had a jump in Human cases while
the rest of the state has leveled off/decreased. I wonder if it is
an increase in circulating virus, an increase in susceptible
population, or/and increase in reporting. At the same time,
denominators are important.

Kern County has a current infection rate of 15.11/100,000 people.

This is only twice the infection rate of Tehama County (7.14/100,000)
which hosted March Crown and three times the rate of Butte County
(5.41/100,000) which I believe is hosting Cynaguan Coronet.

So vaccinate your horses and wear bug spray, but I wouldn't panic yet.

From the California Department of Public Health:

What are the symptoms of WNV?
WNV affects the central nervous system. However, symptoms vary:

• Serious Symptoms in a Few People. Less than one percent
(about 1 in 150 people) of individuals infected with WNV will develop
severe illness. The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache,
neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions,
muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. These symptoms
may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. WN
virus infection can be fatal.
• Milder Symptoms in Some People. Up to 20 percent (about 1 in
5) of the people who become infected will display symptoms which can
include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes
swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back.
Symptoms generally last for just a few days, although even previously
healthy people have been sick for several weeks.
• No Symptoms in Most People. Approximately 80 percent of
people (about 4 out of 5) who are infected with WNV will not show any
symptoms.
