Greetings...

As was mentioned before in a previous post we are setting up riding
lessons in Sunol, CA. between Fremont and Pleasanton.
The style of riding will focus on Western.
Lessons look to be $35.00 per session. You need to know how to tack
up a horse.
Lessons will be on Sundays.
ONCE WE GET A COMMITTED GROUP together we can negociate the price
down some. To do that we NEED a solid core group of interested people
who will commit to a once-per-month lesson.
We NEED to get feedback on the level of interest from the group.
We want to start these lesson this month...that way folks are ready
for the upcoming EQ practices and events!
Please chime in by THURSDAY DECEMBER 4, 2003 if you would like to be
part of this month's session.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone:

I'd just like to mention that $35 for a lesson is really a great price, especially when you are using someone else's horse.  Riding different horses is a great way to learn.

For a comparison on prices I pay $45-$200 an hour for my lessons depending on what trainer I am working with.  Add into that gas, trailer, time, tack, board etc. and you'll know why horses keep me broke!  Buying a horse is the cheapest part!

So, I urge everyone who wants to learn to ride or just brush up on skills to take advantage of the lessons that have been offered on this list.

Just my 8 hooves worth.

Kind Regards,

Sarah

I'm pretty much game for whatever horsey stuff anyone has cooked up.
The Placerville parade sounds fun. Want a few more to fluff up your

Well two weeks ago I finished a gallon of Chloe's Precious Oyl...good for fighters, horses , et al.

As requested I will be filling and sealing about 25 bottles for our fund raiser at 12th Night.

I know it will be during the week before 12th night, but I could use some help bottling, sealing (wax) and labeling.
I have postponed my hand/arm surgery till after Jan. Investiture, so I only have one really good working hand.

If anyone in the area could stop by one night that week and help me that would be fantastic.

Thanks

PS:  Iam I still doing the pictorial poster?  If so what I would like is for people to send me photos of any EQ events you have and especially you as a rider...ASAP...I can print them out on good photo paper and I was thinking of doing a poster like collage of everything and also a small photo album for people to peruse.

PSS:  I could also use some help here too.....If anyone in town wants to help.

Thanks

Hi, all!

About the Western riding lessons - will there be a set Sunday of the month,
or will it wander?
I'm definitely interested, but am reluctant to totally commit yet because I
don't want to hose anyone! Is there an age limit? My 12-y-old son might
want to play, too, if possible. He can't ride my big horse, but perhaps I
can find an older horse for him to try, later, if he maintains an interest.

Rhodry et al,

In general, Sundays are good with the exception of MLK and
President's day weekends. I'd be delighted to come in and
teach "flatwork" (English western, ? - the principals are all the
same) if interest warrants. I also won't be offended if people
aren't interested. If people need a ride from the turlock/modesto
area to where ever we wind up having practice, I have an F-250 that
is set up to tow, if they have a trailer to use.

As far as location, for a weekly practice I would say not much more
than an hour haul from the bulk of the population that would be
attending. I assume for Cynagua that that population is centered in
and around Sac. An indoor arena would be a huge plus at least until
spring because it would eliminate those terrible are we having
practice or aren't we debates. The alternative is the German ideal
that practice VILL BE HELD except for snow, thunder, and
tornados :).

Dear Sir Richard:

I am very interested in regular monthly Western
lessons, but would like to try one before I commit.

However, for most of the year Sundays may be a problem
for me. Right now, any Sunday from now till March
Crown, except for Dec. 14 (non-SCA commitment), Jan.
4, and Jan. 24, is fine. During tourney season,
though, I try to attend kingdom, Mists, and Cynaguan
events, and need to keep some weekends free for family
gatherings. If folks could meet on, say, Wednesdays
-- that would work much better for me.

I realize that for many of us only Sundays are free.
Would enough of us commit to have two sets of classes,
one on a weekday and one on Sunday?

I would like to participate in equestrian activities
in addition to, not instead of, SCA activities.

Respectfully, Kellyn Firesinger

FIRST:  Send me photos people!  Any EQ event.  I want to put out a small photo album on the table at 12th night with more than just photos of our October event.  We had horses at several events this year....did anyone take pictures.  How about the horses at October crown, when they came out at Invocation?

SECOND:  Talked with Siobhan last night.  We need to get out and think seriously about dates and a site for our first event next year.

She had a fantastic idea of incorporating an event with a small tourney or paux.  Paux (excuse my spelling of this if I am wrong) makes me think of the Angels...and I know they like to hold an event once a year.  I am thinking of contacting OB and seeing if they might want to have a joint event with us.....It could bee a weekend and those who don't ride could go to the Paux,,,,,we could camp.  Might be fun for one event and then have a smaller one also during the year with just us.  And I have a perfect place for this, but I need to speak with OB first.

Currently the open weekend dates (this includes the Mists too) are:

APRIL:  weekends of 11th and 17th
MAY:  weekends of 8th, 22nd  (though I would rather not
the 22nd. it is just before Cyn. coronet)
JUNE:  weekends of 5th, 19, 26
JULY:  weekends of 18
AUGUST:  weekends of 7, 15,
SEPTEMBER:  weekend of 10
OCTOBER:  weekend 10 , 16

NOTE:
These days may be a little off because they are figured as Saturdays and not all were posted in the PAGE so I had to figure them out..I don't have a 2004 calendar yet...which I will be getting today.

I want input from people on this asap.  I will be trying to contact OB before 12th night so at that event if they want to go in with us we can get at date for the camp thing.

Rhodri posted a list of great sites and I will discuss these possibilities later this week. Now I  Need to get to work.

Rhodri and Viscountess Gwen:  Please contact me .  I would love you assistance with this since you all live right here with me.

Thanks

I think either April or June. July/Aug are too hot. Also, we should pick a
date in the fall - I think Oct would be good. That way we have 2 dates for Eq
events each year.

Greetings...

Would folks be interested in a combined EQ Practice/Groundwork
Workshop?
It would be held in Hayward, CA (Esfenn/Mists). Cuevas Ranch.
Looking at possibly the 25th of January.

We're asking now, in advance because we want to be sure there will be
folks attending this time.

If interested PLEASE chime in by the 19th of December so we can place
an annoucement about it in a timely fashion.

Thanks!

OK, here is my opinion, at least...

The problem I forsee is the weather. January is usually a pretty
rainy month, and your facility does not have an indoor arena. Even if
it doesn't rain on that day, the arena(s) may be unusable do to poor
footing caused by previous rains. So it seems to me that there is a
pretty good chance for disappointment if you schedual. Now, if
everyone understands that the event may be cancelled at the last
minute, but are willing to hold the date open in hopes that we can
have the event, then I'd say go for it. On the plus side, it would be
good for our group--at least our Mist's group--to stay in touch so as
to be better prepared for the coming tourney season. Furthermore, we
could still do a grooming/handling demo even if no riding were
possible. Is there enough public interest in this, or has everyone
that has wanted this "101" class been taken care of for the
forseeable future? Maybe we should ask the West list?

Since the 25th is a Sunday, and it is far enough in advance that I
can pen in the date, I can volunteer to do groundwork. At this point
I've been grooming and tacking horses enough that I could help with
the demo, or even help give people an idea of English, rather than
Western, tack.

Just trying to be helpful,
Genevieve (Dressage has become my religion) de Vendome :-)

I've been meaning to say this for awhile, but I've been kinda busy
with mundane stuff. But anyway:

You go Cynagua! After the Oct. EQ event there seemed to be an upswing
in interest with you guys in getting together regular practices.
Realistically, Cynagua is a much more horse-friendly environment to
foster equestrian SCA activities than here in the Mists (more
economically feasible arenas, more horses, etc.) I'm really hoping
you guys can grow a strong group, because I believe your
participation is key to the survival of EQ activities in the West.
Not that we here in the Mists are chopped liver, you understand, it
is just harder for us to keep horses (not impossible, just
harder/more expensive).

Keep us Misties posted as to what you guys set up. Maybe we can have
a field trip up there sometime :-) .

Wishing you the best of luck,
Genevieve

After much discussion with Siobhan. and a few others....I put in for two of the dates.

One is the weekend of April 17th and 18th and the Other is October 16th and 17th .

I need to know who got the site at Loomis for us in October?  I need to contact them again for that site for October.  If we rent from Jerry this will give him plenty enough time .

I was thinking that in April, Maybe the Mists could site autocrat a EQ collegium which could consist of classes, ground and riding authorizations (and maybe lessons) so that we can devote alot more to just games in the fall.  I am going to check out and see if the Loomis site will let us camp over and if the don't I will find another site close in for that weekend.

Is there anyone in the Mists that could be site autocrat for the spring event?  I have several friends that might be able to help find a site around El Sobrante for the event.  They show Paso's.

Lets get a move on this.  We need to establish ourselves with stuff away from an A & S etc. so that people can devote themselves to EQ rather than having to decide whether what other things at the event to do instead riding or are committed to other things where they can't participate.

Also we need a meeting.  I know my house is a little far in Sacramento for some Misties, but considering we have alot of riders etc. farther north that equal it out I volunteer my place.  We need to discuss in person what we want to do at these events.  Email is fine, but face to face is always the best.  When to hold it.?  ..maybe be in Feb. so we can get detailed PAGE copy in by March on the April event?
We need to get a move on.  I can call my contacts this week for sites with an arena , class room space etc.  but I need someone down there to work with them....

What say you all.!!!

do often go awry, so Marguerite, Sharon, and I had to cancel because
of work. However, Collett and Leah could make it, so it happened.

But things continued to be, well, interesting. Leah was accidently
given a horse that wasn't the best fit for her. On the plus side,
Leah got to show the world that she can ride a bucking horse and stay
on; Collett reports that Leah looked good, if a bit worried ;-) .
Huzzah for Leah!! After some amount of horse-swapping, Collett and
Leah got a lot of attention from the instructor, so it turned out to
be a good lesson after all (Leah characterized it as "intense", which
I'm interpreting as a good thing :-) ).

Per Vicki, our instructor, there will be *no* Garrod's lesson in
December. I will be calling in January to set up our first lesson for
the new year, so please let me know if you would like to join us.
Once again, these lessons are in Saratoga, and tend to be at about
2:00 on a weekday. Style is English. Costs are very reasonable: $27-
35 for a full hour, depending on the size of the class, and whether
you can afford to buy a 10-lesson card for the best rate.

If we in the Mists have the action to have the April event, would
Livermore be an acceptable site? I can think of two possible sites,
one of which is Robertson Park. Easy trailer access and mucho
parking, two largeish arenas, but no where to go trail riding for
folks waiting to run games. Aricia, what is this site in El Sobronte?
Would is there trail access? I just had coffee with Marguerite, and
we are willing to co-autocrat this.

I respectfully differ with the idea of running authorizations at the
April event and not at the October event. Truely, if we are to remain
open to the Kingdom, we need to authorize whenever we have an EQ
event. Now, IMHO I think it would be a good idea to move to
authorizations at EQ-specific events but not necessarily at
Crowns/Coronations/Coronets/Investitures, so as to minimize the "I
want a pony-ride" factor. In addition, we have to authorize riders on
the horse they are using that day, so we have to allow for
authorzations at EQ events were there are rentals, or even for horse
owners who have not played with us before.

I think most arenas are large enough to run two games runs. I think
some of the wait-issues we experiance in October could be cured by
having separate warm up area(s), an authorization-specific area, and
a games run area. Ideally, there would also be trail access for
people to play in as well, but just separating the games from the
authorizations will go a long way towards making things run smoother.

Meant for the list:

Livermore would be terrific. I don't think it would be too far for
people from Cynagua to go . I booked both dates because that gives
us the opportunity to have it all weekend if we want or either day.
I am so happy you have volunteered for this. Don't ever think I feel
that the Mists is not participating or sleeping down there . You
guys have it all over us when doing lessons and workshops. We up
here are still trying to get that going on a regular basis.

My friend knows lots of mundane horse people in the area around
Pinole and El Sobrante. I grew up there too and she might be able to
get us into some areas we might normally not get. But that would
really be if nothing fairly close is available. It would be the back
up if you all couldn't find a place. I spoke with her and she is
going to check around.

I agree with your thoughts on the authorization stuff. As Siobhan
and I had discussed, we do need to have a separate arena , etc. for
authorizing, etc. or at least a time frame. I feel that October was
extremely successful in that we had many riders, no major HRA
(Horse/Rider Accidents) and everyone had a wonderful time. We just
need to hone everything down and that is always a trial and error
system. I mean look at the crowns/coronets that the fighting always
run on time, Ha! Ha!

I still feel strongly about having classes and lessons involved on
these weekends. I have heard from alot of people who went to Coronet
(Quincy) and A&S and even Crown saying that they would of loved to
have done equestrian, but they were committed to other things at the
events. And I am not saying we shouldn't try to have a EQ track at
the Kingdom Collegium, we should, but have hands on stuff at the EQ
events themselves.

From Richard, again meant for the list:

Good Morning...

Livermore sounds great!

Finding facilities WITH good trail access is difficult.
Lasdt year EdC and I hosted a trail ride...we might be willing to do
so again with the understanding that the trails we ride are composed
of a variety of terrain wich includes hills, water crossings and
more. The rider and horse MUST be willing and able to handle that
type of trail. If there is an interest let us know!

The ranch where we have been holding Mists practice does have good
trail access. The owner is currently working on expanding his arena
to be more accomodation to training and games activities. More on
this to follow.

As always, EdC and I will be there to assist in anyway needed.
The January practice/groundwork day (Jan 25th) that will be held in
Hayward is a good oportunity for folks to get in some practice time.
Also it would be a great oportunity to work with horses (we may have
one or two "loaners" that day...we are working on it)getting familiar

with the groundwork...heck we may even do some round-pen training!
Plus there is ample space to hold a meeting.

I have to agree the Mistress Genenvieve's statement about
Authorizations. We have to be "open" enough for those who want to (an
make the effort to) attempt to authorize to do so. The larger events
get us "noticed" by the populace and two "EQ ONLY" events plus
practices and classes should really help us grow as well.

So..what next...do we attempt to get the Spring or Fall date?

Cheers!

I just called about Robertson Park in Livermore. Bad news: The site
is booked for both April 17 and 18. The good news is that they plan
to cover the arena this year! And the park *is* free for the October
dates. You guys in Cyanagua want to swap dates? The plus side is that
this is a 2-arena site for about $100.

The lady I spoke to only knew of one other public arena in the area,
and that would be Rowell Ranch, which is book-able through the
Hayward Parks Department. You may have seen it--it is visable on the
south side of 580 on the Dublin grade. Don't know if it is in our
price range, however.

I also know that one site that *was* a possiblity--Heather Park out
Concord-way--got redeveloped from an arena to park-only. Sigh. Just
another symptom of the loss of horse-friendly property here in the
Bay Area :-( .

I'll keep everyone updated.

Hi everyone. *Please* remember to change the Reply-to line when you
reply to a post on this list. The way Collett has the default set,
the only person who will see your reply if you don't change the
default is the original poster. Your message will only reach the list
*if* you change the reply-to line to WestKingdomEQ@yahoogroups.com,
OR if the original poster notices that your reply went to them only
and then takes the time to forward your message to the list.

The default is set this way to protect the privacy of those who want
to make a private reply to the original poster. So again, *please*
remember to change the reply-to setting!

Genevieve, who appreciates the replies she's getting, but who is
getting weary of fowarding them :-P .

I'd be fine with Mist in Oct. Cynagua could try the Rio Linda site
for April -
Gwen has seen it and it is only 4 miles from Jerry (which makes it
about 6 miles
up Watt north of hwy 80 and then 8 miles west of Watt)

It is big enough, I think for camping if we wanted to do that.

If we have an autocrat for Mists and in Oct, lets jump on it.
Aricia - is that
OK with you? Anyone in Cynagua want to tackle April?

BTW, Rhodri got us the site in Loomis.

Sorry to hear the site is unavailable. On the plus side, for possible
future events there, the site does indeed have a riding trail (at
least it did 2 months ago when we were there.) Also, between the
2 "arenas" there is that large fenced in area that comes included
with the site rental, which could be used for turning out, warming
up, etc. An ideal site, in my humble opinion!

Frankly, I'd rather have msgs sent to the list have the list as the default
reply. If I want to send a private reply, I can change the addy. How about the
rest of you?

In my brain, I am replying to the list went I hit 'reply to sender'.

Genevieve,

Although I do appreciate you forwarding my reply to the list, my
email regarding the site WAS intended for you specifically! If you'd
rather you didn't receive email from me, I apologise and will
restrain myself in the future. Just so there's no hard feelings, I AM
posting this to the site. Hope we can still be friends?

Yours in service,

Greetings...

We're working out the details for the Western Riding Lessons at
Sunset Riding Academy in Sunol, CA (between Fremont and Pleasanton).
We'll beigin in January...that way we can all start fresh without
the "craziness" that is the holidays. We should have a firm start
date by the early part of next week. These lessons willmostl likely
be on Sunday's. Looks like the first lesson will be $35.00 and you'll
have to know how to tack up a horse. If you DO NOT know how to do
this you'll need to make arrangements to work with Elisabeth or
myself and learn how BEFORE the lesson. If you are interested and
have not yet let us know PLEASE DO by 12/15/03 so we can plan
accordingly.

Also we'll be keeping the January 25, 2004 EQ Practice/groundwork
class in hayward, CA. at Cuevas Ranch open as well. If you are
interested in attending this PLEASE let us know by December 30, 2003
so we can plan accordingly.

Thanks!

Richard de Camville
