From the Society list - I thought ya'll would be interested.
Henrik, can you ask him for a freebie?

SnS

Greetings,

While at DragonCon this weekend I met a vendor selling boffer swords. His main
focus is for LARP-type combat but I found the swords amazing light yet still
rigid, and they don't hurt nearly as much as the youth combat swords (what we
were using at Gulf Wars this year) when I get hit with them.

I'm considering using one for mounted combat (and possibly behead the enemy) and
I'd appreciate some input on their construction. Here's the site:

http://www.edhellen.com/blue.html

They are extruded fiberglass core (the same type we use for quintain lances, but
1/2") with a thick closed cell foam around the core (including tip) and covered
with cotton-poly fabric.

He was so excited to find an SCA equestrian interested in evaluating his weapons
that he gave me a sword gratis to show the marshals and play with. He's eager to
find new markets and is willing to customize his swords as we like, including
leather covers and grips, round swords instead of his regular "bladed" types,
etc. He's also very willing to ship free samples to the KEOs to try out and play
with. He also sells kits and parts to make boffer weapons.

I believe these swords would be excellent for behead the enemy for younger
equestrians since the weight of the sword is minimal, making it easy to use. In
general, it would be an option for those of us that would prefer a lighter
weight weapon.

Please let me know your thoughts. I'll be taking the sword to events over the
next year for us to play with and evaluate.

Peryn

Morning All...

We are looking at Sunday November 16th, 2003 for the next "Mists" EQ
Practice. This site will most likely be Cuevas Ranch in Hayward again.
We are looking at a site in Milpitas as well. WOuld folks be
interested in this date and event?

NOTE: We will be having EQ events at Coronet! Their Highness will
also be announcing a new Mists Equestrian Award at Coronet and would
like to see a stong presence by the Guild there. Elisabeth and I will
be "mounted" for Invocation to help promote the Guild and our efforts
as well. Looks like Games and Authrozations currently. More on the
type of events to follow. Those bringing there horses will need to
provide their own enclosures, bedding, food and handle clean up. We
NEED VOLUNTEERS to help with SET UP on Friday and TEAR-DOWN on
Saturday night and Sunday. PLEASE VOLUNTEER!

Cheers!

Equestrian Games at October Crown

Saturday October 4, 2003

West (Woodland, CA)

We would like to invite the populace to join us during October Crown at the large arena located on the site. This will be lots of fun for all.  Both to ride and to watch.  We are going to try to split the large arena and run different activities in each area.  There will be authorizations, games (heads, rings, reeds), a head to head ring spearing competition has been suggested, and a quest type of activity.  And who knows what else we'll come up with.

Rental horses will be available.  We are working with the same wrangler as for the event Oct. 19th.  Jerry Bestpitch of JB Ranch.  The cost for rentals will be $130 for the day, and 2 people may share a horse at $65 for a 1/2 day each.  Checks should be made out to Jerry Bestpitch.   Sept. 25th is the deadline for them to be recieved. Reservations may be cancelled and payment refunded in full until Sept. 25th 2003

As with the October 19th Equestrian event, the wrangler encourages people to come out to his ranch and ride before the event.  He charges $35 for 1.5 hours (a Very Good Deal). His phone is 916-991-9500 and he has a website www.JBRanch.com.

There is limited stalling available for those who wish to bring their own horses.  You must provide your own bedding if its necessary.  However, the stalls must be cleaned before we leave, and all bedding removed from the site.  So if you can do without it, please do. Also, if you need bedding, please use shavings, as straw bedding is prohibited in Yolo county.

Please contact the games autocrat for stall and rental horse reservations.

Two things:

1.)
Since Coronet is at Fort Ord, there probably won't be any water on site,
so if you are bringing your horses, remember to bring enough water.

The books claim that horses drink 12 gallons of water per day. I don't
know what size horse that is for... I have never measured how much water
my girls drink. However, if you are going to camp with your horse, you
will need to figure out how to bring A Lot of water.

I intend to daytrip with at least one of my girls.

2.)
I will put in a tentative yes for Sunday, November 16th. I hope to bring
one of my girls this time. We shall see how she is doing.

Count me in for ground crew help. I'd like to learn what goes on at
events so I can prepare my horse and myself for the fun! I might be
interested in sharing a horse, too, if there's an odd-man-out.

For later reference, is there someone with an extra-tall/wide
trailer and rig willing to pick us up in Sacramento now and again if
I pay gas money plus? My horse plays well with others but is
Unreasonably Large and I don't have a rig yet...

OK, it is getting close. I'd had a couple of folks contact me about renting
horses but no one has sent money yet. i need more reservations - you guys are
making me nervious!

If you are wanting lunch and have not yet told me about it, please do so.

classes:

Here is what I have - if you are teaching a class and it is not here, let me
know. If you are here, please confirm. I need to start working out time
frames. I am doing this from work so I do not have my stuff right in front of
me.

Stephen & Elina - demo of mounted combat and of jousting
Aricia - demo of side saddle riding, dressage, and a class on eq medicine
AH! forgot your name - class on full contact jousting from someone who has done
it and/or class on draft horses
Toni (?) - class on drill team maneuvers

Who is bringing equipment? I have my set.

Who is bringing helmets? - I have one.

Who can help marshal? Who can help run gate?

Who, beside Stephen and Elina,is planning to bring their own horse(s)?

What do we want to do if the weather is total crap? What defines 'total crap'?
For me that would be a steady wind and temp around 50 with or without
rain/snow.

Umm, no, I want to *take* this class, not teach it! Collett is
teacher (or was the last time I checked.)

Can we wear gortex over our costumes ;-) . Real windy would be bad.
Mist or light drizzle would probably be OK. Significant rain would be
bad. Hopefully, it will be a beautiful day--October is often full of
beautiful days!

This last Friday (Sept. 6) we had our September ride at Garrods in
Saratoga. We had 7 people attend: Marguerite, Collett, Leah, Sharon,
Alys, Laina, and myself. This time we had a trail ride instead of an
in-arena lesson. We got to practice going uphill and downhill *a lot*
(silly me, I had thought there would be *level* sections up there)
and admire the stunning views of the south bay area. Major
congradulations to Collett for her memorable demonstration of how to
stay on a bucking and kicking horse and prevent it from falling off a
cliff! The rest of the ride was quite peaceful, really...

We also got to practice tightening our girths while mounted (a useful
skill) and trotted a bit up some hills.

Next month's lesson will return to the arena, and will be held on
Thurday Oct. 16th at 2:00 PM. Per usual, if you'd like to join us let
me know!

Greetings All...

Elisabeth asked me to drop everyone a note about the Equestrian
Activities at Mists Coronet.

#1: Yes there WILL be Games and Authroizations run at Mists Coronet.
We may even try a trail ride for those who bring thier horses!

#2: We'll be using the area near the rear backstop for
games/authorization. Each horse owner will need to provide some form
of enclosure for their horses. Those camping at this event are
ancouraged to camp near their mounts. Horse owners will need to
provide food and water for their mounts as well. Please come prepared!

#3: There are NO RENTALS at this event. Any horse that is "loaned" to
a non owner is done out of the kindness of the owners heart. Please
respect their wishes in regards to the use of their mounts. It is
EXPECTED that those allowed to ride have some basic knowledge of how
to ride. This is NOT the time to "Learn How To Ride"...it is just too
stressful on the horses! Waht this means is that you should be able
to sit is the saddle with balance and understand VERY BASIC
cues...you don't need to be an expert, just have some basic
understandings and the ability to LISTEN to the horse owner and
EQMiC. NOTE: When authorizing the EQMiC will ask for a rider to
traverse the serpentine course at the appropriate gate, possible
traverse a large figure eight pattern and other "tests" to ensure the
RIDER (no the horse...they learn patterns VERY quickly) is able to
control the horse and maintain the desired gate.

#4: If you are planning to BRING YOUR HORSE(s) please let Elisabeth
know by 9/19/03. If ou wish to "loan" your horse out for others to
authorize and run the games on PLEASE let her know at what level you,
the horse owner, will allow and any other requirements/requests of
the "loanee". She can be reached at dcamville@... or at 510-
886-1526 (no calls after 9:00PM please)

#5: VOLUNTEERS are NEEDED to help with Set-Up on Friday/Saturday,
with Ground Marshaling, Handeling, Tear down on Saturday/Sunday and
event tack and Grooming! If you want to ride PLEASE be kind and
volunteer! Contributions to help offsetexpenses are also welocmed!
These type of activities require volunteers to help ensure a smooth
and enjoyable experieice. Please help where you can.

The Equestrian Guild is trying to do its best to help those
interested in the Equestrian Arts to be involved. Please don't be
shy! We LOVE to talk and advise...you just have to show an interst!
We look forward to sharing the day with MANY of you at Mists Coronet.
Be sure to attend Invocation too!

Hi All...

The discussion about the next "Mists" EQ practice got put on the back
burner (an rightly so) with all the plans being made for Mists
Coronet, Corwn and the EQ EVENT DAY (how very, very cool)in Loomis!

But...Elisabweth and I would need to let our ranch owner know a date
ASAP. He'll expand the arena to give use a longer run. We'll even
have use of the BBQ if we wish! What a guy! It wqould be the same
rate as last time $5.00 per person and $5.00 per horse. Horse MUST
have all their shots current (West Nile Virus is here
folks...vaccinate your mounts) to be allowed on site.

The site is Cuevas Ranch in Hayward, CA.

We were looking at Novemebr 16th.

If you are interested in attending/helping/bringing your horses
PLEASE chime in. We would like to let him know a firm YES on the date
by the 19th of this month.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Cheers!

11:00AM-12:30 AUTHORIZATIONS: The RIDER (not the horse) must
demonstrate a basic level of knowledge and equitation. The rider will
traverse a serpentine pattern at one continuous gate without breaking
stride. This can be done at the Walk (Beginner), Trot (Intermediate)
and Canter (Advanced). Other "skills" will also be asked of the rider
(ex: Traversing a figure 8 at a particular gate with out breaking
stride)
12:30-1:00 Lunch/Break
1:00 –3:00 (possibly longer if riders and horses wish to): GAMES
PRACTICE: Enemy Heads- The rider and horse travel a "serpentine
pattern" through four plastic safety posts and using a boffer "sword"
tap a stryo-foam "head" from it base. This will be done at the Walk,
Trot and Canter as the rider authorization. Posts are set at least 30
feet apart.
Ring Joust- The rider must ride in a straight line along a series of
four "T shaped" ring tree which hold magnetically rings that range in
diameter from six (6) inches to one (1) inch. The rider must catch as
many rings as they can upon their "lance" while maintaining an
unbroken and steady gate. The ride has two sides of the "ring tree"
upon which to ride and catch rings. The rider must ride in a straight
line along a series of four "T shaped" ring tree which hold
magnetically rings that range in diameter from six (6) inches to one
(1) inch. The rider must catch as many rings as they can upon
their "lance" while maintaining an unbroken and steady gate. The ride
has two sides of the "ring tree" upon which to ride and catch rings.

NOTE ONE: This is NOT the time to "learn to ride" nor is it a "pony
ride". If you attend PLEASE have some basic understanding of
equitation. Some of the horses that will be present may be available
for use…but it is up to the OWNERS of that horse whether or not it
will be "loaned out". Getting to ride a horse you do not own is a
PRIVILAGE and NOT a RIGHT. Mundanes (boarders at the ranch) will
also be present at this event. Please keep this in mind!

NOTE TWO: The owners of this ranch may allow us to use the arena for
PRACTICES later this season. We need to make a good impression on
them! Please be sure to clean up after yourself and your horse. Be
courteous at all times. Please keep this in mind during the day. This
is a rustic "working" ranch (not a show barn). Please be aware of it.

We look forward to sharing a fun day with all of you!

Marguerite, Alys, and I travelled up to test-drive Jerry Bestpitch's
horses today. Everything went well, even though the day was *really*
hot. I'll write more later...

But one thing I wanted to bring up right away is that we need more
people to rent! It is not clear whether we have enough people renting
for October Crown, at least for Jerry Bestpitch to bring horses out
for a full day. So I'd suggest that we, as a group, decide that we
have a policy that *IF* rental horses are available, and you do not
bring your own horse, that you must rent if you want to ride. This
policy would, I'd hope, force people to *not assume* that they will
be able to ride a private horse for free, and that if they want to
ride they need to step up to the plate and pay for a rental. If we
want to have rental horses available, we need to get people to rent
them!

Respectfully,
Genevieve (who had a good day, even if she got overheated...)

I have a Shire workshop that day, so I can't the basics class BUT this would
be a great opportuinity to authorize as a Groundsperson - we are now
REQUIRED to come up with some type of authorization process for this by the
new Equestrian handbook!

To review the new handbook online, go to www.westkingdom.org, click on the
marshallate, and then equestrian.

Your Grace Duke Henrik, should we formalize the groundperson authorization
process so that its clear to everyone what is required? Off the top of my
head, I'd say:
- knowledge of how to approach and handle a horse (cues to move over, safe
distances)
- ability to lead a horse in a serpentine pattern
- ability to back a horse on a lead
- ability to groom a horse out
- knowledge of safe tying (quick release knot, etc.)
- ability to tack a horse, or at least adjust stirrups and girth to proper
length and tension (English and/or Western)
- knowledge of the proper layout of the games field (required spacing of the
games, where the rings go for rings for tilting, etc.)
- knowledge of conventions for handing sword and lance to riders (i.e.,
AFTER the rider says "thank you" then you relinquish the sword lance to
them)

What do you all think?
In service,
Marguerite du Royon

Meant for the list, I'm sure...

This idea is ok. But this is the same old problem we have run into
before, in that it is extremely expensive for people to rent. That
has been the thorn in the EQ Arts side and kept it from really
getting popular. It is too expensive for the regular SCA 'er to
participate in. (those of us who breath horses cannot understand this
because we would rather ride than have a new costume or amour...but
it is true)

I probably won't be riding at either event, unless necessary because
(a.) I don't ride horses I don't know (after you have broken your
back you are a little careful what you get on) (b). Her Majesty and
I might be able to bring Tucson so thats my ride, (c.) I won't know
if I can afford to rent until October Crown and at Crown Her Majesty
and I are sneaking away after Invocation until the Tournament of
Roses has to start, then we have to be back, and (d.) we will
probably need more help working with beginning riders, paperwork,
ground, setup, etc. Everyone always wants to ride...I don't mind
working on the other stuff....I can ride any day of the week and I
can't hold a lance/sword/boffer due to my hand/arm problem and can't
sit trots unless I am in a side saddle. Speaking of which, my new
side saddle isn't here yet, so I am in the processes of borrowing one
for class.

Announcing it as (Oct. 19th event) the first annual EQ Collegiums is
a great way to get more people. Teach half, games half, this is
terrific. This is a great weekend too, because it is before the
rains and it is cooler.

I know in the past that you could only have two people per rental
horse, but what about three? That might help the cost. How much
would that be? You would have to limit the times each person rides,
but it might get more people into the saddle. Cheaper costs, attracts
more people. More people, bigger events. Also if I can afford it I
will rent an intermediate horse myself for some people who could not
afford it at all. though I may be bringing two people...one
intermediate (non SCA) and one beginner as it stands, would let
another person ride the horse I rent, but I won't know if I can do
this until October Crown.

I think we also need to advertise more until EQ events are more the
norm here than the rarity. Just promote the shit out of it! Maybe
we can put something into the PAGE on costs. Also someone needs to
do a BIG PUSH at Court at Mists Coronet for both events. Maybe
handouts? Maybe we can get in touch with each local seneschal ,
emailing them a flyer/announcement with all the details and also
calling them, so they can talk to their populace. For the Oct. 19th
thing...maybe the entire EQ officers/Senior Marshals can to something
at Evening Court to Promote the event. Make a presentation maybe.
Looking ahead, maybe at 12th Night we can do a special display!!!???

I am available to help some before 12th night (after Ragnor and
Scaith step down I will have lots more time). Also getting local
riding lessons going is a great help. I am looking at a private
training stable who has an indoor area who might let me teach there
(english/dressage/sidesaddle) a few times a month. I just have to
work out the exchange ratio and make sure we can draw up a
contract /wavier that will protect them.

Also check out the website that lists who has what awards? Do you
know anyone who deserves a Kings Lance? and even a Western Lily (for
teaching EQ?) Send in your recommendations to her Majesty at
perryx4@.... Scaith would love to give them out. This is
also an excellent way to put EQ Arts into the fore front.

Got to get back to the grind stone......
Sewing for Royalty!! (Kinda sounds like Dialing for Dollars doesn't
it? Ha! Unfortunately no cash rewards..just well dressed King and
Queen and that's well worth it!)

Aricia
(ready to become an EQ Arts Publicist after 12th night)

PS: Also can we have a little/short meeting at Crown? Her Majesty
and I would really love to meet everyone we don't know. Maybe when
she comes over to the arena?

PSS: How about teaching classes at the Kingdom Collegiums on how to
make barding or riding boots or adapting women's medieval costume for
riding!

PSSS: Sorry...I just got carried away!

So I'd suggest that we, as a group, decide that we
have a policy that *IF* rental horses are available, and you do not
bring your own horse, that you must rent if you want to ride.

That is what I did at May Coronet.

Sorry - no sympathy here. If I want to fight, I have to buy armor and maintain
it. I have to buy rattan for swords and plywood for shields. I can't say "Gee,
I'd like to fight in the Lists but I have no money for equipment so I expect you
to make it easy and cheap for me"

If I want to ride at SCA events, I either have to have a horse, have a friend
with a horse, or rent a horse.

There are costs for all hobbies.

Marguerite, this would make a wonderful class, and
successfully completing it would authorize much needed
groundspeople.

Many expert horsemen/women have never been asked to
lay out a games field or hand a sword to a rider. And
performing the other requirements would demonstrate
their capabilities as well as showing onlookers how
they should be done.

Subject: Day at JB Ranch
tlwhyte17
Send Email Send Email

I thought I'd post a report on our day at the JB Ranch, so that
everyone will have a better sense of what to expect from the rentals.

Marguerite, Alys, and I arrived at the ranch at about noon yesterday.
The heat was an issue--none of us rode as much as we might have
because the heat really took it's toll on us. We began with a short
talk with Jerry Bestpitch, going over a list of games he had been
sent by (Glenda/Dierdra? Siobhan/Diane?), and showing him some of the
eqiupment. He then allowed us to set up in the back of his property,
where he ususally practices mounted shooting. Since this was not an
arena, the ground was closer to what we deal with at events. We had a
full set of equipment for rings, so we started with that.

Two helpers came out with some horses they thought would work and
they ran by the set up with the lance. Once they had determined that
the horses would be OK we got mounted. We took turns being mounted
and on the ground so as to reset the run. One helper-woman stayed
with us the entire time and was *really* helpful!!! She even did most
of the work to create a "heads" set up, and brought us all otter-pops
at the end of the day (I think she could see that we were dying in
the heat, bay area-wimps that we are ;-) ).

There being three of us, we tried three horses. One was nice,
forward, cooperative, and generally a good boy. I rode a retired mare
that needed encouragement to keep trotting, but was in general a nice
easy ride, and didn't have any problem with either the rings/lance or
the heads/boffer. (Funny thing: these horses clearly have done poll
bending, and got confused because we wanted them to come straight
back instead of running the serpintine again.) The last horse,
however, we decided would not work--he started well, but then decided
that he didn't like all this and started crow-hopping and being a
general butt-head. The assistants, after watching all this, told us
that there were several other horses that would work for us that they
could bring to our events.

JB had left by the time we were leaving, so we didn't get a chance to
close the loop. I will be calling him this week to touch base, ask
for the first horse and to let him know that one of the horses' did
not work. Overall, although the ranch was kinda "primitive" (to my
english-used-to-indoor-arenas-and-cross-ties eyes), the people all
seemed very willing to help us. They were *not* just giving us any-
ol' trail horse, but were trying to match horses, riders, and tasks.
We were there from noon to three, including all set up and getting
acquainted, and they still just charged us $35 per person. Really a
good deal!

I'm of the opinion that these are good folks to deal with.

Hoping all of this will work out,
Genevieve
