Hi everybody. I want to post a bulletin about some details for the Battle
of the Thames event on this Oct 4-6th.

On Saturday night we are going to host a dance at the Armoury in Chatham.
The Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment occupied the building until 2006.
There will be live music and a professional dance caller. We are trying to
organize a meal, provided by Four Diamond Catering, and entertainment by the
Essex-Kent Regiment Pipe and Drums. This is a very impressive display. I
envision this meal being like a regimental, fancy dinner. We are trying to
keeps cost to around $40 with the dance being free for those not wishing
partake in the meal.

We will provide free bussing for re-enactors between the site and the
Armoury.

Seating may be limited to 200 re-enactors at this time, with the possibility
of opening up more seats. I want to get a feel for how many are interested
in this.

Friday is Education Day. Please let me know if you or your group is
interested in attending.

Saturday is the main day with a march and the main battle (with cavalry!!!)
followed by the evening meal and dance.

Sunday is a memorial commemoration at Fairfield and on site. There will
also be a fighting tactical through the local countryside and farms, much
like we did at Jefferson Patteron in Maryland a few years ago. This is not
open to the public.

I will provide more details as events start to firm up over the next few
months.

The kids usually start arriving around 9 AM, so you would need to have your

In talking with friends over the weekend the subject of Playterson came up which
of course sparked me do a little more digging. In going over the replies I
checked to see if I had missed anything and took another look at Peters reply
below,

> Local legend, but apparently no written sources, locate 'Playter's' or perhaps
'Playter's tavern' near or at the site of Fort Willow, which is of course
located at mile 8 of the Nine Mile Portage, the last high and dry land before
the portage descends into Minesing Swamp. An archaelogical dig on a settled
area/hole in the parking lot of the Fort Willow Conservation Area, seem to have
be a small house belonging to an Irish settler who built there in the
1840s-'50s.
>
> In short, the name is associated with the western end of the Nine Mile portage
but, as far as I can tell, no exact location has ever been confirmed.
>
> Peter Monahan
> Friends of Historic Fort Willow

With that in mind I came across a letter written a month later then the letter
mentioning the name "Playterson".

It reads in part,

" Aug.4th 1816 Capt. Owen to Capt. Baumgardt at the Hydrographic Office,
Kingston U.C."

" I am however of opinoin that persuaded the Establishment of the Commissariat
at Holland landing at Kempenfelt and on the Nottawasaga, be not suffered to go
to decay, the transport required for Drummond Island and our establishment would
hardly require more than a single porter at Nottawasaga or Christian Island
since no intermediate depot would be necessary for such small demands and if the
Establishment at the head of the Nottawasaga Creek now called Platers , and
that below at its mouth be placed in the Possession of the Naval Establishment
on Lake Huron(and indeed the others at Kempenfelt and Holland River might also
be both turned over to you for their care and protection)."

So perhaps not " PLayters" but "Platers". As it reads in the letter, " now known
as" . Was it the same place we know as Willow Depot prior to 1816?

Doing a quick genealogy search there were people by the name Plater in the area
very close to the time of the war and still are in the Barrie/ Collingwood
areas,,, not to say that they are some how connected but, who knows, I'd have to
do a genealogical search to be sure.

Thanks Peter for your lead, sorry I didn't dig a little deeper in that direction
but thats research I guess and thanks all for the suggestions and help.

Certainly an overview and necessarily fairly limited, but it covered most of the
ground, avoided trying to trade who won stories but agreed that the First Nation
lost. seemed quite harsh on Jackson's reputation.

Most extensive consideration of the lost war in the UK I've heard, you may have
to wait until the 300th anniversary for anymore!

We are providing raw food (beef, veggies, bread) which you will have to cook
yourself. We are also trying to negotiate breakfast so you don't have to
cook in the morning (probably typical pancakes), a free dance with live
music and a dance caller (Joe Q. Public has to buy tickets to this) and free
bussing all night long to the dance so that nobody has to drive. There is
also a 'gift' which will be kept surprise for now. Plus the typical
firewood, but no straw. We are also trying to contract onsite showers.

Anybody that is set up on Friday morning will be provided a lunch as well.

We are also budgeting money to anybody that brings a 'trained' horse. We
have not determined this cost yet and you have to contact me first. You
just can't show up with a horse and say "Give me money".

And if anybody wants, I will give them a personal tour of the farm that I
grew up on.

How does that sound Kevin? Tempted? I am open to suggestions as well if
you have any good ideas.

This is a reminder to those loyal and new to the Battle of Longwoods event (near
Delaware, Ontario, Canada). The event this year has been placed on hold to
allow for Fort Meigs to hold their 200th annivesary event closest to the
original date.

Therefore Longwoods will be back in 2014 with our 200th annivesary event on
March 8th, 2014. This event will feature a memorial service followed by a
reenactment on the original battle site (along Hwy 2). Members of the current
US and Canadain armed forces are set to help commemorate this event. A memorial
plaque sponsored by the UTMRS will be unveiled, and will list the names killed
in the battle from both sides. More information on this event will follow
regarding dates and times and accomdations available.

On May 2-4th, 2014 will resume the Battle of Longwoods weekend at the Lower
Thames Valley Conservation Area just west of Delaware on the Longwoods Road.
This event will feature the usual event with some modified battles.

Thanks for all your support and see you hopefully in 2014.

Regards,

Brad Stott

There is still time register for the Battle of Ogdensburg—Friday, Feb. 22,
Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24. As a bicentennial event, more re-enactors
than ever have already registered.

Friday, the Freight House Restaurant is laying on a special chicken dinner for
$10. Horst Dressler will introduce his new book on Les Voltiquers canadiens.
Also, Tim McCabe and Deb Jansen, the owners of the Freight House, are opening
the banquet hall to re-enactors who want to bed down on their own cots and air
mattress. Saturday and Sunday mornings there'll be a $5 breakfast for the
overnighters.

The bicentennial of the battle of Ogdensburg will be commemorated with a
Saturday street battle following a similar route to the one taken by the
Anglo-Canadian army Feb. 22, 1813. The pipes and drums of the Stormont, Dundas &
Glengarry Highland Regiment from Cornwall, Ontario will play an informal concert
following the battle and then join the re-enactors to drain kegs and inhale
chicken wings at the Freight House bar.

The Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles are the ancestral unit of the Stormont,
Dundas & Glengarry Highlanders.

Sunday the battle returns to Lighthouse Point were the attack ended 200 years
ago.

Friday night the Ontario shore will send up a barrage of fireworks to
commemorate the 200th anniversary of the attack from Prescott.

See the schedule at www.fort1749.org

If you want to attend, call Tim Cryderman at 315- 322-5519 (home) or
528-2817(cell). Email tcryderman1@...

Tim needs to know if you plan to stay at the Freight House and he'd appreciate a
heads-up if you are coming for the chicken dinner.

On this date, 200 years ago, a British squadron arrives at the mouth of the
Chesapeake Bay and establishes a blockade of the bay. The squadron consists of
the following frigates: HMS Maidstone (32), HMS Junon (38), HMS Belvidera (36)
and HMS Statira (38), under the overall command of Capt George Burdett.

The War of 1812 has come to the Chesapeake.

Just a reminder that the bicentennial of the British assault on Havre De Grace
is May 3-5. We should have registration starting within the week.

Cheers,
