Good Morning Everyone (EST)

It being the 200th Anniversary of the First American Invasion of Lower
Canada (Quebec) in the War of 1812, I wrote an article on it to dispell
some of the myths surrounding it. Clearly Wikipedia needs to be
edited....again.

Other additions have been made to the site for your "Edu-tainment" at:

http://www.warof1812.ca <http://www.warof1812.ca>

The article is first on the list.

All the best,

Robert

Kudos to the 2nd Lincoln Artillery for organizing the Frenchman's Creek
commemorative event. A chilly and snowy day but it gave you an appreciation for
the poor buggers who fought in those conditions along the Niagara River.
There were representatives from the US Rifles, 15th and 23rd US along with the
Royal Artillery, 49th Foot, 60th, 95th, Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Caldwell's
Rangers and footborne Lincoln Militia.

Greetings!

The 60-page hardcover Battle of Queenston Heights souvenir
book has been completed! This book captures the event from
the U.S. side perspective, and has been compiled as a guide
to the organizers of the TriCentennial -- 100 years from now.

Included are many great photos and flattering comments from
reenactors who said they thoroughly enjoyed the best hospitality
they've ever experienced.

Overall, a great event on both sides -- and a tribute to the
volunteer reenactors and organizers who made it happen.

You can review and order the book here: http://goo.gl/fCQS3

Next up: Unveiling of the Tuscarora Heroes Monument on
December 19, 2013!

Lee Simonson, Volunteer
Historical Association of Lewiston, NY

P.S. One of the interesting aspects of the events that hasn't
been discussed much was the transportation of the reenactors
across the border. Volunteer organizers worked for months
with Customs on both sides of the border to assure a smooth
and quick crossing. When the 140 U.S. reenactors arrived
at the Canadian border, all with muskets, all five buses were
cleared in 7 minutes.

Not to be outdone, when the reenactors returned, U.S.
Customs cleared the buses in 5 minutes and 10 seconds!

THANK YOU to Customs on both sides of the border for your
support and cooperation for this bi-national event!

Thanks for all the support with 1812: The Invasion of Canada boardgame that came
out this year. The response has been amazing from boardgamers and reenactors.

Our publisher, Academy Games, has just launched a Kickstarter project for the
next game in the 'Birth of America' series. 1775 Rebellion is a prequel of
sorts. It uses the same gameplay as in 1812, but with specific changes to
depict issues in the American Revolution. The end result is a game that plays
fast and give a different strategy feel then in 1812.

The Kickstarter project has already reached its goal and met the first 'stretch
goal', which means the game will come with The Siege of Quebec varient. This is
an advanced game designed for two players with experience with the system.

Please consider supporting to be the first to receive 1775 Rebellion. You can
also get a combo deal with a copy of 1812: The Invasion of Canada. It is also
your chance to get one of the few "White House Candles" that I am hand
producing.

Hi, Victor,

We're seeking a lady to lead a workshop on "How to be an Accomplished Lady".
Ideally, the workshop would draw from Jane Austen's fictional characters. It
would be lovely if it also incorporated some strange re-enactors encounters
(i.e. how to cope with costume criticisms, male flirting etc.). Obviously, we'd
like it to be informative, but also entertaining.

Are there any ladies among you that might be a good fit to lead it? We will
offer monetary compensation for it.

Hello from a military miniature sculptor,
In Chartrand's work and other references, I've noticed several variations in the
"Tombstone" shako of 1813-1814. Some have high fronts that are fairly flat and
square, while others have a somewhat conical design with a front that is more
rounded at the top, and blended into the sides without much or any stitching or
binding to set them off from the body of the cap. The squared variety sometimes
have white binding around the false front, but sometimes not. Are all correct
variations or is one more accurate than the others? Did they vary by contractor,
lot, or unit? Was it just a case of the basic regulations leaving room for the
contractor to make his own interpretation?

Thanks for any assistance and perspectives you can provide!

All the best,
Forrest Harris

As you say, there are several authentic versions. The "shaped version" with the

RIVER RAISIN NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK SELECTED AS one of 10 National Parks to
be featured in the 2013 PASSPORT TO YOUR NATIONAL PARKS Commemorative Stamp
Collection

MONROE, Michigan.— Eastern National, a 501 (C)(3) partner of the National Park
Service, who runs the National Park System "Passport to Your National Parks"
program announced that River Raisin National Battlefield Park was selected as
Midwest Region's featured national park in the 2013 Commemorative Stamp
Collection. "The Passport to Your National Parks" program started in 1986 and
is now located in almost all of the 398 national parks. Visitors who travel to
national parks can obtain a National Park cancellation stamp that is unique to
that national park and commemorates the date of their visit. In addition to the
cancellation stamps, each year Eastern National produces a full-color special
commemorative stamp series that features just 20 national parks. This year,
River Raisin National Battlefield Park is one of the 10 national parks selected
to be featured.

Photographs are submitted by national park employees and
volunteers and winners are selected by Eastern National each year. A photograph
taken by William Saul, a Battlefield Volunteer, was selected by Eastern National
as one of the ten winners in 2013! The ten parks selected to be featured in
2013 include:

National Stamp: Photo by John Donoghue

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial – Dedicated in 2011, this is the newest
memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It pays tribute to the civil
rights leader who believed in hope, justice, democracy, and love. Reverend Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a tireless advocate for oppressed peoples of the
world. Part of Dr. King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech is reflected as the
major art piece of the memorial: "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of
hope." Dr. King gave his inspiring speech at the Lincoln Memorial 50 years ago,
on August 28, 1963.

North Atlantic Region: Photo by John Donoghue

Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site – Built in
1759, this mansion served as George Washington's first major headquarters during
the American Revolution. Six decades later, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
began 45 years of residence.

Mid-Atlantic Region: Photo by Adali Rosario

Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park encompasses the falls of the
Passaic River that flows through the nation's first planned industrial city.
Alexander Hamilton founded Paterson, N.J., as the "cradle of industry" that
would draw upon the Passaic to power the industry of a new nation.

National Capital Region: Photo by Kathryn Williams

George Gordon Meade Memorial – Sculpted by Charles Grafly, the memorial to Gen.
George G. Meade, commander of the Union Army at Gettysburg, was dedicated in
1927. It stands along Pennsylvania Avenue, the route of the Grand Review of
Union troops that General Meade led on May 23, 1865.

Southeast Region: Photo by Alexander Emert

De Soto National Memorial – Located on the shores of Tampa Bay, this site
commemorates Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto's 1539 expedition. His
journey lasted over four years and covered approximately 4,000 miles. It would
help shape the history of the United States.

Midwest Region: Photo by William Saul

River Raisin National Battlefield Park memorializes those who lost their lives
on its grounds during the War of 1812. Of the 934 American soldiers who fought
here in January 1813, only 33 escaped death or capture. This led to the famous
rally cry "Remember the Raisin!"

Southwest Region: Photo by John Donoghue

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site – The admission of nine
African American students to the all-white school in 1957 played a prominent
role in the desegregation of public schools in the United States as ordered by
the Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education.

Rocky Mountain Region: Photo by Richard Maxwell

John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway commemorates Rockefeller's
contributions to America's national parks. Established in 1972, the parkway
connects Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. The area is home to moose,
bears, and wolves; and recreational opportunities are plentiful.

Western Region: Photo by Emily Mount

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument contains the youngest volcano on the
Colorado Plateau, having formed roughly 900 years ago. It reshaped the landscape
changing the lives of people and animals. Today, life returns with plants
scattered across the black cinders and jagged lava flow.

Pacific NW and Alaska Region: Photo by Megan Richotte

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve in Alaska is a land of stunning wilderness
beauty where volcanoes steam, salmon run, bears forage, glaciers carve, craggy
mountains reflect in shimmering turquoise lakes, and local people still depend
on the land and water for their livelihood.

"Eastern National could not have selected a better year to feature River Raisin
National Battlefield Park," said, Superintendent Scott J. Bentley. "2013 is the
200th Anniversary of the Battles of the River Raisin and having the Battlefield
featured in the 2013 Passports To Your National Parks Collectors Stamp series
means almost every National Park in America will help tell the story of the
Battlefield this year," Bentley said. River Raisin National Battlefield Park is
the only War of 1812 National Park selected to be featured in the collectors
stamp series in 2013. In addition to the Battlefield's cancellation stamp and
the 2013 Collectors Series Stamp, the Battlefield will release a River Raisin
National Battlefield commemorative Bicentennial Cancelation Stamp this January.
The Bicentennial Cancelation Stamp was made possible through a partnership with
Eastern National and the Monroe County Community College.

The 2013 Collectors Stamp set is available now at the River Raisin National
Battlefield Park visitor center along with "The Passport To Your National Parks"
® book, children's book and the Passport Explorer Edition. At the Battlefield,
"The Passport To Your National Parks" book is $8.00 each, Passport Explorer
Edition is $50.00 each, and commemorative stamp sets are $4.00 each. The dated

Authorized in 2009 and established in October of 2010 as America's
Newest National Battlefield Park, River Raisin National Battlefield Park
remembers, commemorates, preserves and interprets the January 1813 battles of
the War of 1812 and their aftermath. Although American forces were victorious
in the first battle, the second ended in the most disastrous defeat for the U.S.
during the war; a devastating loss that included mass killing of the wounded.
One of the most historically significant events to emerge from the battles was
the cry, "Remember the Raisin!" which persuaded forces to fight successfully at
the Battle of the Thames later that year. The American victory at the Battle of
the Thames sealed the War of 1812 in the western theater for the Americans;
however, it claimed the life of the great Shawnee leader, Chief Tecumseh.

Eastern National is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) cooperating association, whose
mission is to promote the public's understanding and appreciation of America's
national parks and other public trusts. Operating educational and interpretive
bookstores in over 150 national parks in the eastern part of the United States,
Eastern National donates its profits from these operations to aid the
interpretive, scientific, and historical mission of the National Park Service
and other public trust partners. Since Eastern National's founding in 1947, it
has donated over $105 million to the National Park Service. Visit

Check out what is posted on the 23rd Infantry Reenactment website [below] . It
is a good overview, with pictures. Of course various issues of the Military
Collector and Historian also have some in depth articles

My sincerest condolences go out to his family, he was a good man and stubbornly
determined to get better from his recent illness. It's a shame to hear that
those efforts failed. May he rest in peace.

I will pass the unfortunate information on to my unit...

Hello,

We are very excited in the South West Region to show the first of a series
of advertisements featuring prominent television and film actor Graham
Greene. Graham took time out of his busy schedule to shoot a series of
videos to promote the Battle of the Thames and several of the other projects
here in Chatham-Kent. The major events are scheduled between September 28
and October 6, 2013 and are sure to make the South West Region unforgettable
in the legacy of 1812 commemorations.

We are proud to promote what we already know is a significant region in the
War of 1812 history, and delighted that we are receiving this level of
national recognition.

Just wondering if anyone can help me out with a reasonably close up photo of a
reenactor Colour Sergeant such that you can see his insignia clearly...?

Thanks,

Hello
I am just joined the group and I`d like to introduce myself. My name is Tibor
Gajdacs, live in Toronto Canada. My short story is, I was born in Hungary, 1980
me and my family emigrated to Australia, and since 1992 we live in Canada. I
started to work as a metal worker over 40 years ago and a last 3 as a
blacksmith. That is my passion and I also have a business named Phoenix Flame. I
have a strong interest about the 1812 war and started to do re-enactment event
which I enjoy very much. I have a coal forge, hand crank blower, canvas fly,
barrier ect. I do demonstration and education. I`m also working for the Black
Creek Pioneer Village as a blacksmith educator. I`m looking information about
1812 events, where I can participate, and the history of that era.

I have just up-dated my list of interesting places to visit, which is a response
to a solicited list of links to the event pages of museums and historic sites
around the U.S. and Canada. Some of them are 1812, some of them you are
probably familiar with, others you may never have heard of, all have interesting
programs and approaches to keeping history alive. If you are on vacation and/or
in the neighbourhood, drop in and see them. Tell them Sutler Cyrus sent you.
If any of you out there are connected with a museum I haven't mentioned, let me
know (off list) and I will add it, if you like. For those of you who like my
brand of insanity in Smoke & Fire News, I have also put up the last 12 months of
Sutler Cyrus cartoons, rendered in glorious Technicolor, for your amusement.
For those of you who live in the Toronto area and are planning to be at Fort
York's "Frost Fair" this weekend, drop by and shoot the ship with me.

Cheers,
Sutler Cyrus
