Here's another off the Revlist------

From: John Fraser <jfraser@...>

As a re-enactor of a private soldier in the 71st regiment, I am frequently
asked why a free American citizen of the 21st century would willingly
portray a British soldier of the 18th century. The question is often asked
in very impolite terms, including suggestions that we are somehow "English".

Within the ranks of the 71st, I have heard many reasons given for our
portrayal. The explanation that seems best to me is simply stated:

We portray professional soldiers in the British army of the 18th century to
demonstrate the huge price the American (and French) forces paid for our
latter-day freedoms. We demonstrate the valor of the Continental Army, the
colonial militia, and others by portraying the zealous professionals of the
British army who were defeated only by great sacrifice.

Kevin, I don't know if anyone has answered this for you, so in the interest
of helping another re-enactor...

"When a reg't has lace in pairs does the officer have his lace in
pairs as well?"

Yes. According to the Regulations the buttoning patterns are the same.

"Also is the lace on the cuffs in pairs or single?"

Yes.

"are the buttons on the great coat in pairs or single?"

The great coat is issued by the Board of Ordinance and is therefore of one
standard pattern. The buttons are spaced singly, single breasted for the
OR's and perhaps ,(as there is evidence for both ),double breasted for the
officers.

You could always try checking the Discriminating General as I believe there
was a piece on greatcoats posted there for a while.

I hope this helps, Craig.

I'd love to buy Sean's musket, but right now we are investigating buying
some used Baker repros from a fellow in Canada. What exactly does one do to
ensure a total lack of hassle from the gun and customs authorities in the US
and Canada? AFAIK flintlocks are in Canada the same as in the USA: not
considered firearms. Any hassles with purchasing several at once from an
individual in Canada and bringing them over the border?

Dear Onelist,

After reviewing the A&E website about the movie the Crossing I was very
disapointed to find out that they did not list in the credits all the military
technicians
(re-enactors) who worked for over 3 weeks on the movie training the sometimes up
to 300 extra's how to march, drill and look like a Continental soldier. This
list of
forgotten military Technicians and Consultants will follow in the next day as I
am presently compiling the list. I have also sent a e-mail to A&E requesting
that they
add them in for all its worth.

The list will appear on Jan, 5th/99

Take Care!

They are a little more expensive, but they have a good selection, and a
good red and green. Couldn't find any blue there. If you are pst exempt
then you get a better deal. If not just get on of their 10% off cards.

A friend of mine was recently on holiday in Toronto and I sort of
suggested that he could see if there were any 1812 sites to visit, I
then had to explain the War of 1812, well it was a good reason for an
evening in the pub.

He found and visited Fort Erie, well at least the outside of it since it
was closed for the holiday. They also went to a nearby battle site and a
plaque there referred to the 44th (East Essex) Regiment and the 108th
Regiment of Foot who presumably were a Fencible Regiment, does the list
have anymore details about them?

Many thanks.

The 108th were a regiment of the HEIC, originally the 3rd Madras Europeans.
They were taken into the line in 1861 with the territorial title of the 2nd

Canadians, I'm Curious. What battle would this had been, when and where?

The 44th finished the RevWar in Quebec and made it to Bladensburg, North
Point and New Orleans during the War of 1812. They also got mixed up in a
little spat called Gandamak in 1841. Would this had been F&I?

By now I'm getting feedback from re-enactors regarding Forever

Greetings, Dave:

Nice to have you with us on this list. You might like to know about another
discussion site I have started at http://deja.com/~warof1812/ This is not meant
to be a rival for this site, as I have discussed with Larry Lozon. I think the
two sites complement each other, and the discussion is already heading in
different and positive directions as we both seek to explore different topics.
We would be glad to have you joing us there as well as to see you on this site.

Incidentally, you had mentioned that you would submit some of the papers from
the War of 1812 in the West Symposium for publication in the Journal of the War
of 1812. We would still be interested in doing so.

I still have the copy of the replica copy of "Standing Orders of The First
Infantry" and would like to review it in the Journal. Could you give me the
price of it and the address where interested readers (and interested people on
this list) could obtain it. Thanks!

Greetings to All
By Happy circumstance I received a scanner for Christmas. I now want to be
able to put up some of the pictures I have in my archive. Unfortunately I
have deleted the earlier E- mails on our listing that indicated how to put
them in some common file (or something, I forget what). Could anyone assist
in sending me the guff needed?. In addition, what is the best form to do
the picture and what is the best resolution for the scan?????
Regards Richard Feltoe.

Fellow members of onelist, Chris George mentioned about the "Standing orders of
the First Regiment" that I have reproduced. Chris, the Standing orders are 8.00
postage paid. They are hand bound with linen thread, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, with
paper wraps and a label. Each copy is 30 pages. The current batch, has script
print, due that the original standing orders, that we copied, was hand written
in 1807. After the current supply is gone, the next printing will incorporate a
different font. You may send requests for the STANDING ORDERS OF THE FIRST
INFANTRY (U.States) to: Kinzie and Forsythe 406 West St. Parkville, Missouri
64152.Thanks! Dave.
