This is an invitation for American War of 1812'ers in the midwest (and
elsewhere) to come out and attend the annual Lyon Farm War of 1812
event being held April 25-27, 2008. This event seeks to interpret the
War of 1812 in the West along with the fur trade and civilan life in
the period.

Please consider putting this on your calendar and supporting a nearby
event. We are an outdoor museum village away from the hustle and bustle
of a big city. We would like to host British and American Regulars,
militia, artillery units, sutlers, Native Americans, crafters,
demonstrators and civilians.

Please feel free to email me for information or see the site's website:
          http://www.kchs.us/page2.htm

Thanks for your attentions,

Thanks for the invite. Is this in place of, or in addition to the June event?

Welcome Barry.

Due to circumstances of birth I have always been interested in the
Irish as soldiers (as Wild Geese and for the Crown.) My main
expertise is the United States Marine Corps during the the late 18
and early 19th Century. Like the ranks of the US Army, and I am
suspecting a bit more so, Irish immigrants, as well as Americans of
Irish decent, enlisted and filled the ranks of the Marine Corps in
higher numbers than their percentage of the population.
***Have not had the chance to do that study yet (if someone allready
hasn't) but its a feeling I get from looking at the rolls.***

So I will also be happy to help you from my limited (USMC and a bit
of Navy), and American standpoint as I will be continuing my reading
and searching on the subject, I suspect, the entirety of my life.

Welcome Aboard

1. It's too far away.

I live in California.
This excuse just gets me angry.
I'll stop here before I get more angry.

2. There's no battle.

This excuse was put to rest several years ago.
There's a battle.
Funny that those who always used this as the excuse haven't been heard from in
awhile...

3. I don't like the NPS.

Get a life.

4. It might rain

Yeah and an asteroid might hit the planet.
See answer 3 above.

5. No one of repute goes to it.

Barring myself (self deprecating joke there if you didn't get it), there's the
vaunted Steve Abolt of the 7th (I've been his friend since 1980 -- and you?) and
Gen. Pickles. Who could ask for more?
Maybe we can get Brad Pitt to come talk about his New Orleans green housing
projects, will that do it for ya? If not I can show you pix of me with him.
Close enough, huh?

Lt Col my usual are you going to New Orleans rant B

Well, it has been established on a couple of other reenacting oriented lists
I subscribe to that the price of gasoline in the US is definitely killing
the hobby by inches as travelling to any event is quickly becoming
prohibitively expensive. Carpooling mitigates this somewhat, but not
extensively as we're all still carrying too much impedimenta. I personally
have the added issue, at least for NOLA, that the event is held just when
the spring term is beginning and my absence from class would definitely be
noticed.

I'm hoping mine was the good excuse. If you'd like, I can elaborate on what
kind of commitment to this degree program I've made that, as a fellow Scot
(at least ethnically in my case), I'm sure you can appreciate. My tuition
bill per semester comes to $11,000 US. This does not count what I'm
spending on books and "recommended but not required (if you don't mind
failing)" study aids. Given that my attendance is checked for each and
every class so that my professors can confidently state to the bar
association (whenever I get to take a bar exam) that it was really me taking
the courses, and each absence counts against me and my final grade. There's
a reason lawyers charge the fees they charge: it's mostly just to make back
what we spend becoming lawyers, plus a little compensation for the hell our
lives become while in school. And I volunteered for this...

"Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity
in exclusion of all other religions may establish, with the same ease, any
particular sect of Christians in exclusion of all other sects?" -- James
Madison, June 20, 1785

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense,
founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of
enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Musselmen; and, as the
said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any

Hi Erika,

John Latimer's book is high on my "must have" list. It was a review of the
book in my local press that aroused my interest in this, indeed "incredible
war".
Having read your comments, I am even more anxious to obtain it.

All the best,

Ok seriously now...

Lots of good reasons why one may not be able or want to go to New
Orleans but if you do go? It would be well worth the trip.

Several members of the Royal Scots Grenadier Company ventured down
there last January and were very well received and looked after. A
little touring before the event allowed us all to take in a wonderful
city that is doing well to get back on its feet. Yes, there are
places that do show dramatic damage but in many places you'd never
know. The city and its citizens would love to be your hosts for sure.

The site is incredible and yup there is a battle. It was pretty good.

If you are thinking on a long distance trip plan ahead and think New
Orleans, if not for this year, then maybe next. If Mr. Gilmore,
Jennings, Abolt, etc. can do it, then others can as well, with some
exceptions, granted.

...and I didn't even get paid for this. :>)

Reasons I AM going to New Orleans;

1.) Hang out with my friends.
2.) I am having withdrawl symptoms from the smell of burning sulphur.
3.) I like Bourbon Street late at night when young coeds use up their
parents hard-earned money to show off their budding talents.
4.) The food alone is worth the trip and I haven't had a good Po Boy in
a long time.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the great question. I should have mentioned it- the April
25-27, 2008 date for the LYON Farm event is old June event.
We had to move it due to other conflicting local events and
midwestern reenacting events as well.

If my memory serves me correctly, a few guys from your group came out

Thanks for the question-

Thanks for the info. Yes, a few of the lads turned out for an extra shot at a
redcoat. Unfortunately the new date in April puts us in conflict with an event
we've been supporting for years that has been very nice to us. So I doubt the
guys will be attending in '08. But, we put no demands or restrictions so you
never know.

List - this notice is primarily for Canadians interested in research on
the War of 1812.

The following notice appeared recently, and is of importance to those
studying aspects of the War of 1812. The archives in question contain a
host of church records from 1784 until 1816 (and beyond), providing
information on many families who had settled in UC during that time.

United Church Archives on the Move

"The United Church of Canada recently announced that its Toronto
archives will be moving from the Victoria University campus at the
University of Toronto to The United Church of Canada’s General Council
Office at 3250 Bloor Street. West in west end Toronto. The move will
happen in early 2008. This is a monumental task involving moving close
to 20,000 boxes of records to the new site. While planning and
preparations are underway to move the collection from its current
location, the collection will be temporarily unavailable for research
after December 21, 2007. The United Church anticipates reopening its
reading room to the public by Monday, May 5, 2008 at the new Bloor
Street location. It is anticipated that the new site will be more
convenient for users, given its proximity to major transportation
routes, the Islington subway station, and on-site parking. For more
information, visit http://unitedchurcharchives.vicu.utoronto.ca/, email
   info@... or call 416.585.4563. "

My best regards to all, and my wishes for a very Happy Christmas and
successful New Year.

Yrs etc.

There has actually been a lot of negative response from several
prominent historians and archivists about this move, including the
members of the Ontario Historical Association, the Canadian
Historical Association, the University of Toronto, and the
Association of Canadian Archivists. There is even a petition to keep
the archives at Victoria University. http://www.savethearchives.ca/

On October 31st the Save the Archives Coalition sent this open letter

and Paul Gooch (president, Victoria University).

Dr Paul Gooch
President
Victoria University

Dear Ms Sanders and Dr Gooch

The announcement of the United Church of Canada's plans to relocate
its archives to its own offices in Etobicoke is a welcome indication
that the value of these records has been recognized. But the move
remains troubling to members of the Save the Archives Coalition. We
are not convinced that the Archives have yet been `saved.'

We continue to feel the need to speak on behalf a public interest in
this Archives that has not been adequately recognized in the
discussions and planning that have stretched over the past two years.
Some 2,300 people who have signed our petition share that view. As we
stated when we met with each of you, this research centre has a far
larger relevance than simply maintaining the records of a particular
group of religious institutions. Not only does the collection include
a wide range of material that was not generated by the churches
themselves, including many private papers, but there is also
undeniable evidence of its value for researchers in many fields in
Canadian history, literature, architecture, musicology, environmental
studies, foreign affairs, and so much more, as well as research in
many vital matters of public policy. The United Church and Victoria
University have been jointly entrusted with maintaining this research
centre and its remarkable collection, and we the public are not
satisfied that the impending move will ensure the kind of future that
this Archives deserves.

We are concerned about the long-term implications of the projected
move. We see five significant problems in these plans.

Funding. Until recently, Victoria University was funding half the
operating costs of the Archives. With the withdrawal of those
financial resources, the Church's new operation will be much more
constrained and much less able to maintain the high quality of
service that users have come to expect. Ms Sanders made quite clear
to us during our interview in October that the Church can not afford
to dedicate substantial new resources to this project.

Staff. The respected reputation of the Archives rests heavily on the
expertise of its experienced, highly competent staff. Any new staff
recruited to handle the records at the new location will face a
prolonged period of familiarizing themselves with a large, rich, and
diverse collection. We also worry about whether staffing levels can
be maintained with the Church's tight budget constraints, especially
since the Church has had to lay off several staff in recent months.

Location. A central location on the University of Toronto campus is
certainly preferable to a more remote suburban site. Ultimately more
importantly, the building into which the records are to be moved is
only rented, and the security of the location is therefore not at all
certain.

Space. According to Dr. Gooch, this was the key determinant in the
Church's decision to leave Victoria. Yet, the Church's statement
about the move does not suggest guaranteed space for expansion, as
any large archives must plan for. The future of the extensive
Berkeley Studio records already housed in there suggests that there
will be even more pressure on space.

Transition. It seems highly unlikely that so vast a collection could
be moved and made available to the public by the beginning of May,
especially without experienced staff to set the new operations in
motion. The records will therefore almost certainly be inaccessible
for much longer than indicated.

There is an alternative. The Archives could easily remain on the
Victoria University/University of Toronto campus. The issue of
inadequate space cannot be a stumbling block, since other archives
(including the University of Toronto Archives) have found creative
ways to meet that challenge without completely relocating. The issue
is unquestionably money, and, if a secure funding base were
available, the Archives would not have to move. We therefore call on
Victoria University to initiate a special fundraising project to
establish a more secure future for the Archives. We are convinced
that the support for such an initiative would be substantial, and we
would certainly be willing to assist in any way possible. It would be
a renewal of historic relationship in which the United Church and
Victoria have supported each other for 108 years.

As the voice of a concerned public, we urge you once again to
recognize the public interest here, to reconsider the decision to
disrupt this venerable research centre, and to find the ways to keep
it in its present home.

Sincerely,

I have to agree with Ranger Roy...my pardon has not come through and
believe me...you don't want to try crossing the border with a

Calvin,

Thanks for sharing such a beautiful poem at this time of year. It is
hard not to remember all of the families that will be missing a loved
one this Christmas.

Slightly OT, but remotely applicable to us and certainly the season.

The Night Before Christmas

T'was the night before Christmas,
He lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house,
Made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney,
With presents to give,
And to see just who,
In this home did live.

I looked all about,
A strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents,
Not even a tree.

No stocking by the mantle,
Just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures,
Of far distant lands.

With medals and badges,
Awards of all kinds,
A sober thought,
Came through my mind.

For this house was different,
It was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a soldier,
Once I could see clearly.

The soldier lay sleeping,
Silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor,
In this one bedroom home.

The face was so gentle,
The room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured,
A Canadian soldier.

Was this the hero,
Of whom I'd just read?,
Curled up on a poncho,
The floor for a bed?

I realized the families,
That I saw this night,
Owed their lives to these soldiers,
Who were willing to fight.

Soon round the world,
The children would play,
And grownups would celebrate,
A bright Christmas Day.

They all enjoyed freedom,
Each month of the year,
Because of the soldiers,
Like the one lying here.

I couldn't help wonder,
How many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve,
In a land far from home.

The very thought brought
A tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees,
And started to cry.

The soldier awakened,
And I heard a rough voice,
'Santa, don't cry.
This life is my choice.

I fight for freedom,
I don't ask for more,
My life is my God,
My country, my corps.'

The soldier rolled over,
And drifted to sleep,
I couldn't control it,
I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours,
So silent and still,
And we both shivered,
  From the cold night's chill.

I didn't want to leave,
On that cold, dark night,
This guardian of honor,
So willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over,
With a voice, soft and pure,
Whispered, 'Carry on Santa,
It's Christmas Day, all is secure.'

One look at my watch,
And I knew he was right,
'Merry Christmas my friend,
And to all a good night.'

This poem was written by a peace keeping soldier stationed overseas.
The following is his request.

Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our Canadian
service men and women for our being able to celebrate these
Festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we
owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who
sacrificed themselves for us.

From the Crimean War yahoo group:

Some 100 NZ Army medals were stolen in the early hours last Sunday,
the main ones:

VICTORIA CROSS AND BAR

2nd Lt Charles Upham 1941, 1942

VICTORIA CROSS

Cpl Leslie Andrew 1917
Sgt Keith Elliott 1942
L Cpl Samuel Frickleton 1917
Sgt John Grant 1918
Sgt John Hinton 1941
Sgt Clive Hulme 1941
Sgt Reginald Judson 1918
Sgt Harry Laurent 1918

GEORGE CROSS

Sgt Murray Hudson 1974
L Cpl David Russell 1948

ALBERT MEDAL

Lt Randolph Ridling 1918

The theft has been front page news and has aroused universal horror
from the PM down as ' a crime against the nation.' Despite the police
focus and optimism throughout the week however, the criminals are
still at large and of course the medals could be long gone. No
apologies for going off topic on this, as I know our group contains
several eminent and influential medal collectors who will
know better than I how to give these details the widest pertinent

A situation has arisen in which we have received a complaint from a
non-list member, Calvin Arnt. This posting describes what the
complaint consisted of, and gives a ruling on it. It is a rather long
post, and those who are not interested in this sort of thing should
probably hit their "delete" key at this point.

There are some aspects of general applicability to this matter that
might affect the future conduct of postings to this List. This, in my
opinion, justifies dealing with the matter at some length.

I'm still amused; don't take things as seriously as you do.
I am still amused even more amused; even by your use of George
Washington and
I am not offended. I don't get offended by peoples personal opinions
no matter
what knowledge they have or don't have. It's an opinion; right or
wrong, it's
just an opnion...........................

[end of Message #34331]

At 10.51 a.m. on Saturday November 24, Mr. Arnt sent several of the
Moderators of this list the following message:

Are you going to do anything about this publicly, or is defamation
allowed on the list now?

Calvin.
[the entirely of post #34331 is then reproduced in Mr. Arnt's post].

At 9.27 a.m. on Sunday, November 25, Mr. Arnt sent the Moderators the
following message:

I'll ask a second time. Are you going to publicly rebuke this person
since he publicly maligned my and indirectly my group's name and
reputation? Or do you allow character assassination on the list?

Calvin.
[the entirely of post #34331 was again reproduced in Mr. Arnt's post]

On Monday November 26, several moderators, including myself, responded
to Mr. Arnt's posts, pointing out that we had not answered earlier
because of other commitments on our time over the weekend.
Unfortunately, we are not "on duty" moderating the list 24/7. It was
obvious from his first two postings, however, that Mr. Arnt was quite
upset. An exchange of e-mails followed over the following days and
after what I feel is a full and fair investigation, I can advise the
List as follows.

In brief, Mr. Arnt believes Mr. Seufert's "Calvin II" referred
specifically to him, as his first name is "Calvin". Mr. Arnt believes
Mr. Seufert has a low opinion of him, which he likes to spread. Mr.
Arnt believes calling Mr. Sigler "Calvin II" links Mr. Sigler to
himself, as "Calvin I", in a negative and defamatory way.

As a Moderator here is my ruling:

1) Who is "Calvin"?

I don't see how Mr. Arnt's contention that he is the only possible
"Calvin" that Mr. Seufert could have been referring to can be
justified. It is only Mr. Arnt's assumption – there are other
possibilities.

First off, I for one have no idea how many "Calvins" are participating
in War of 1812 activities.

There are other "Calvins" as well. For example, one could assume Mr.
Seufert was referring to Calvin the cartoon character from "Calvin and
Hobbes". In this scenario, the point being made was that Mr. Sigler
was enthusiastically posting many messages to the list, in a somewhat
reckless manner, the way one would expect "Calvin", the young and
full-of-life cartoon character would do in similar circumstances.

As I was obviously involved first-hand in the series of postings that
led to my putting Mr. Sigler temporarily on a "moderated" status I
think Mr. Arnt has drawn a rather harsh interpretation of what
actually transpired regarding Mr. Sigler.
It might even be said that Mr. Arnt is displaying a "defamatory"
attitude towards Mr. Sigler, who remains a member in good standing of
this List.
But it is more likely that Mr Arnt, not being a member, is merely
misinformed on exactly what transpired.

I don't see how any connection could be made between past allegations
Mr. Arnt says have been made that he is a "farby know-it-all whiner",
and what transpired on this List with Mr Sigler's recent postings.
Absolutely nothing of that sort was said as regards Mr. Sigler.

I for one don't know what Mr. Sigler's impression is of – or if he
even is an active 1812 re-enactor – so how could he be characterized
as "farby"?

Re-reading Mr. Sigler's postings, I see no sign of "whining" whatsoever.

Mr. Sigler also explicitly states that he is never offended by
people's opinions, and I think it is a fair observation to state that
Mr. Arnt appears to be mightily offended by what he seems to believe
are Mr. Seufert's opinions.

It appears to me that Mr. Arnt might be reading far more in to the
situation regarding Mr. Sigler than is warranted from what actually
transpired. Mr. Arnt's views are evidently strongly coloured by past
interactions he says he has had with Mr. Seufert, and his complaint,
on its face, jumps to many unsustainable conclusions. Those
conclusions may or may not be correct, but there is not the sort of
solid evidence here that I would require to invoke "moderator" powers.

2) What is the duty owed by List Owner and Moderators to non-list
members:

Mr. Arnt is not a list member. The duty of list owner/moderators
extends only to list members, and with reference to the list's rules
of conduct, they are simply largely not applicable to comments made
about non-list members like Mr. Arnt.

The purpose of this List's rules is not to punish people who might
express opinions that others – even the vast majority of others –
might not agree with. The purpose of the rules is to facilitate
rational discussion about the War of 1812 – nothing more and nothing
less.
The purpose is not to unduly restrict a free interchange of ideas and
information – and opinions. The purpose *is* to make sure flame wars
don't break out.

The duty to "protect" individuals from intemperate comments from list
members, is a duty only owed to list members. This is a clean and
simple line to draw in the sand.

Illustration: you *can't* say "Jim Yaworsky is a communist" on this
list. You *can* say "Bill Clinton is a communist" (this on the
assumption that American members of the List would not have their
national pride offended by such an allegation…). If Bill gets to hear
of this, and chooses to join the list himself, then you will no longer
get to call him a communist – unless it is done in the context of a
thorough analysis of facts relating to Bill that would support such a
conclusion.
You *can* call me a communist right now, if you feel like it – IF you
supply a thorough analysis of facts relating to myself that would
support such a conclusion.
You can't *ever* call me a "dirty rotten f*cking communist", however,
because such intemperate adjectives are never allowed. In fact, you
shouldn't use that sort of language even about "non-member" Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton is a public personage. He chose to enter the fray of
politics. He is "fair game" as a result.

Re-enactors who choose to form or join units, and choose to
participate in 1812 community activities, also become "fair game" in
terms of comments on the quality of their impression and the way they
choose to interact with other members of the 1812 community on issues
of mutual concern to the 1812 community.

If someone *is* "farby" or a "whiner", then there is nothing
inherently wrong with other 1812 re-enactors being of this opinion,
provided they are able to indicate a rationale basis for why they have
developed the opinion. A good analogy might be actors who take part
in a performance – they have extended an implicit licence to critics
to "judge" the quality of their performance.

There is no rule that we all have to like and respect each other, just
because we choose to call ourselves an "1812 re-enactor" and despite
the shoddy or unsafe or uncooperative attitude that an individual
might display. There *is* an "1812 community" that one is accountable
to for the quality of one's impression and the activities one chooses
to undertake.

It *is* possible and indeed highly desirable to rationally critique a
fellow 1812 re-enactor or an 1812 Unit in terms of deficiencies in
authenticity, safety, etc. What is *not* useful is when the
discussion degenerates in to name-calling and wild unsubstantiated
assertions i.e. a "flame war". It is also necessary to realize that
not everyone's opinions are going to be identical and ultimately we
are each responsible to do what we conceive to be the "right" thing
and not just unthinkingly go with the "herd".

I hope the above examples make things clearer as to what is and is not
allowed on the 1812 Yahoo List.

3) Is posting "Calvin II" "defamatory"?

Even if Mr. Arnt was a list member, posting "Calvin II" is not on the
face of it enough to warrant Moderator/Owner action. The words
themselves convey virtually nothing on their face. Anything that is
read in to those words, including the identification of Mr. Arnt
specifically as "Calvin I", is done entirely by the reader.

If the reader already thinks, for example, that Mr. Arnt is a farby
whiner, or whatever other derogatory opinion(s) they might hold of
him, then this might well be their understanding of Mr. Seufert's post.

If they don't know Mr. Arnt to make the connection that he might be
"Calvin I", or if they don't think that Mr. Arnt is a farby whiner or
whatever, then there is absolutely nothing in what Mr. Seufert posted
that would bring such conclusions to the reader and influence their
opinion of Mr. Arnt or his group one way or the other.
I suspect there were a fair number of list members who, when they read
Mr. Seufert's message, couldn't figure out what he was getting at. It
meant nothing to them. They shrugged and hit the "delete" key.
Given this reality, my personal thought is that Mr. Arnt might have
been best advised to just ignore the message. However, Mr. Arnt has
insisted I supply a ruling.

As an aid to Mr. Arnt in his efforts to promote a true appreciation of
him and his group in the 1812 community, I have posted to the Yahoo
1812 website as the "group photo", a picture taken last year of Mr.
Arnt and several members of his group marching in to action as part of
the Crown Forces, so that people can decide for themselves as to the
quality of the impression presented by Mr. Arnt and his comrades. A
picture is worth a thousand words, as the saying goes.

I was going to post as an appendix to this message the penultimate
message exchanged between Calvin Arnt and myself, in which he made his
case for feeling aggrieved at length and with considerable eloquence.

However, the validity of the complaint still comes down to readers
identifying "Calvin I" as being Mr. Arnt, and only Mr. Arnt. And this
identification once made then the wording of what was posted actually
conveying an assortment of negative connotations. Yet none can be
arrived at from the wording of the actual message, and few can be
arrived at even taking the message in the broadest context possible.

And, there is the simple fact that Mr. Arnt, while he once was a
member of this List, chose several years ago to quit it. Mr. Arnt, by
putting together an impression and taking part in public programs, has
opened himself up to critiques by other members of the 1812 community
– as we all have.

I regard this matter as "closed".
