List:
Today is one of the most important days of the year - St. David's Day,
not only the national day for Wales, but also the Regimental day of the
41st Regiment (Later the Welch).
To all members of the hobby - even to those unfortunate enough not to
have been in Wales or have Welsh ancestry - Cymru am byth!

Thank You Mr Hobbs, and to all a happy St David's Day.

Saint David's Day

The Royal Welch Fusiliers do not celebrate battle honours but the national
day of Wales, St David's Day (1st of March) is celebrated wherever there are
Royal Welch Fusiliers. In Battalions the ceremony 'Eating the Leek' is
observed by the youngest soldier in each company, and by newly-joined officers
and
guests at dinner in the Officers' Mess, whilst drummers and fifers, led by the
Regimental Goat, march round the table.
It is only on St David's Day that the Loyal Toast is drunk. Shortly after
the 1797 Nore Mutiny when dining with the Regiment, King George IV expressed
his wish that the Loyal Toast should be dispensed with as 'the loyalty of the
Royal Welch is never in doubt'

From Frederick MacKenzie's Boston Dairy:

1st March 1775: "This being St. David's Day, the Officers of the 23rd
Regiment, or Royal Welch Fusiliers, dined together according to the Custom.
All
the General & Staff Officers, The Admiral, and several other persons were
invited to dine with the Regiment..."

"The sun never sets upon the Union Jack"
  – said by an English Journalist in the aftermass of Waterloo.

I found this statement in a book

THE LAST LION:
Winston Spencer Churchill; alone 1932-1940
ISBN 0316 54503 1

The statement begs the question where did

"The sun never sets upon the British Empire"

come from and should we use same during our recreation of the War of
1812?

Larry,

I can't assign the quote directly, but I believe it was coined at the
pinnacle of British empire building during Victoria's reign,

The sentiment was originally expressed in the late 16th Century by
Charles I of Spain, and was said of the Spanish Empire. Charles was
also Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire at the same time.

So the Brits "borrowed" the statement/sentiment. More correctly, Lord
Salisbury used it in 1861 when discussing the cost to Britain of
maintaining the Empire. Apparently 1.5 million Sterling was a small
price to pay for the defence of the empire upon which the sun never
set.

As far as I am aware, it was not current during the Napoleonic Wars,
nor the War of 1812.

Source of this was either Schama's "History of Britain", or Ferguson's
"Empire" - I do not have them at hand so cannot check.

Yrs etc.

The idea of an Empire on which the sun never sets only really came into
vogue---and expression---in the late Victorian era, after the East India Company
had given up its monopoly of India and the rush to seize colonial territories of
the 1880-1900 period overwhelmed the free-trade-and-no-colonies thinking of the
1830s-1850s. I suspect---although better scholars than me will possibly
disagree---that it is not really a mode of thought for our 1812-1814 focus.

I attribute the quote to to a family member, but I can not recall
which one and I believe many other on this list of the Irish race can
attribute it to family members of their own, but it has always been
one of my favorites;

Actually, that was said by a Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) politician as that
island country was working towards independence. I guess if the Brits
can steal the original quote, the Irish are welcome to that one :)

Dear List,

Similar to years past, our group will be hosting a full soiree at
this year's Grand Tactical 2007 at Old Fort Niagara in July. It is
open to all Officers and NCO's from every unit, either army, Natives
included. Those people are also welcome to bring along their dates/
escorts for the evening. Special invitations will also be given out
to others, including sutlers and whatnot. All food and drinks are
provided free, though you are welcome to bring your own concoction to
pass around and share. For more information, log onto our web site:
http://www.lincolnmilitia.ca/ and click on the link for "GRAND
SOIREE" and you'll see more information there. (I intended for there
to be pictures from last year on the page but alas, things get lost).

I encourage you to attend. Last year we had a good showing from the
American army, but were somewhat short on Brits and Natives. The
purpose of this soiree is largely to foster communication and
friendship between the various groups in this hobby. Since the GT
tends to attract a high number of 1812'ers, this provides the
opportunity to chat with people in person and not just on internet
lists. At times, some people can stick to themselves or with cliques
that they are comfortable with, so we are trying to stretch the
comfort zone a little, and get everyone interacting with others in
the hobby we may not normally talk to.

I realize that there may be other social events going at the same
time, and ours may not be the "only" event, or the "best" event that
weekend. You may have your own mess planned. We are not asking anyone
to cancel their own plans, but rather, to just incorporate our soiree
into your plans for an hour or so on the Saturday evening. Most
groups have their own messes at every event anyhow, so you can attend
those any time. Our soiree is a once-a-season event, and serves the
greater purpose of building friendship in the hobby. We hope you can
find time to withdraw from your own mess for a short time, and share
a drink and a laugh with others at our GT soiree. Stay as long as you
want; come and go as you please.

Last year when I made this announcement I asked for all Officers and
NCO's to respond one way or the other if they were coming. I'm sorry
if some people felt that placed pressure on you for a decision, so we
are doing it differently this year. ONLY THOSE WHO ANTICIPATE THEY
WILL ATTEND need to reply to me and let me know your intentions. We
will make up a food/drink shopping list the week prior based on how
many have actually informed me of their attendance. We will plan on a
few extras for those who might change their mind at the last moment
and drop in, but if you think you will attend, please tell me that.

Thank you for helping us to foster positive communication and
relationship amongst the 1812 community.

Your Humble Servant,

Calvin Arnt, Captain.
1st Reg't, Lincoln Militia.

Try Wyedean Weaving <http://www.wyedean.com/>. I
bought some royal lace from them last year and was
very pleased with their quality and service. I
believe they carry both 1/2 in. and 3/8 in. widths.

It was somewhat expensive although I don't remember
now exactly what I paid per yard. The exchange
situation at the time between the UK and us didn't
help either. Not sure what it's like now?

Dear List,
Hats off to all the organizers, sutlers, presenters and participants at this
year's Living History Conference. The workshops I attended were excellent and
Rick Green was terrific. What a beginning to our season of living history!

I have 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch in stock -- the 5/8 inch is US$6 a yard,
the 3/4 is US$6.50 a yard.

My thanks to everyone who turned out for the Conference! It was, as
Glenn says, a terrific start for the season! It was wonderful to see
everyone, and to catch up on your winter's activities and news. I was
very impressed by the amount of sewing that has been going on while the
snow has been flying. So many people had new kit to show off . . . you
looked great!

Thanks also to my partners in crime (aka the rest of the committee) -- a
job well done all around. Thanks for all of your hard work.

And to the participating merchants and display booths, thanks for your
hard work also! I am so impressed by the new merchandise that folks are
showing -- it's wonderful to see people making a real effort to ratchet
up their authenticity levels and to find new cool stuff. I had tons of
comments on how great the place looked. Well done! Huzzah!

Three cheers all around, and now onwards to Kalamazooooooooo . . .

Friends:

I have the sad duty to inform you of another tragic loss to our
living history community.

For far longer than I have been involved in our hobby, Adrian and
Rhonda have been among the most colourful and prolific of our
reenacting friends. Their unique character interpretations, legendary
camp parties, and command of the infamous near-mythical "mercenary
militia" have elevated them to an unusual level of recognition in
several different time periods within the living history community.

I have received word this morning that Rhonda has passed away
suddenly, as a result of a massive heart attack. Her presence at our
events will be sadly missed. Deepest condolences to Adrian and Jeb,
and the rest of Rhonda's family and friends.

I am awaiting further details, but others on the list may have closer
connections with the family than I (the message came to me third-
hand), so if anyone else gets word of funeral arrangements or contact
information, please post the information.

Seconded with enthusiasm. The cross-section of speakers and topics were
well worth the price of admission. Congratulations to Dave Brunelle and
all who were involved behind the scenes

Good job everyone who worked on the conference. Always a challenge to
work on something so hard and wonder if it will all come together.

Nice place to hold the event.

The presenters were all top notch. Well done all.

Dear List,
After attending the memorial service for the Battle of the Longwoods on Sunday,
March 4, there was some discussion about how , when and if, families of private
soldiers were notified of the death of their family member. The 89th Reg. have
published the Articles of War on their website and it states that the property
of the dead soldier would be gathered up, debts settled and any surplus or
balance would be given to the Regimental Paymaster who in turn would pay to "the
Representative of such non-commissioned Officer or Private, if claimed within
the Periods limited by Our Regulation on this Head: If not claimed within such
limited Period, the same shall be paid on Application to the Regimental Agent."
This sounds as if the family applies for information about their relative within
a period of time, they would be paid any somes not owed... but it doesn't say or
indeed imply ANYONE actually writes a letter or notice saying so and so was
killed on March 4, 1814.
Does anyone have anymore information about the process... who would inform the
relatives or representative, when and how... Muster Roll records simply list
town of origin, and parish from which they came... There is no next of kin
listed... It sounds as if it was to be the initiative of the relatives.
Help!!

Glenn Stott, Royal Scots, Light Company.
