Some U.S. infantry were armed with "spears" (or pikes) during the war on
the Niagara front, there is an illustration of an infantryman with one in
one of the recent Ospreys, if my memory serves me correct (the one by Jim
Kochan?)

Bob,

My comment about the muskets probably being Charleville pattern in
1793, was meant to highlight that the 1795 Springfield pattern
muskets were not yet in production. Some seem to have the impression
that all American muskets in the Revolutionary War period were French
Charlevilles. As to sources of manufacture of US muskets prior to US
arsenals coming on-line to supply government needs, the following is
probably the most accurate statement in this regard:

"There is no documentary evidence yet discovered which
describes the manufacturers, quantities or dates of
delivery of Charleville pattern U. S. muskets."

Other arsenal records of 1793 provide some insights into sources of
the arms. For example, Springfield, Mass under Muskets, etc.
itemized "New French arms, 6,678". West Point identified 7,360 stands
of arms, but also identified 706 stands of "French" and 226 stands
of "English" muskets. Perhaps the English muskets were captured, or
perhaps purchased by 1793. West Point may have purchased the non-
French/non-English 7,360 stands from private suppliers. But it shows
that "French" muskets were seen as a separate category.

The remarks on the fuzees are of course in the context of
understanding the (apparently) many distinctions (or interpretations
anyhow) between a "fusil" and a issue infantry musket. William
Clark's writing shows that he identified "fuzee" as distinct from a
musket. I certainly don't want anyone to infer that his men all
carried them, rather then the 1795 Springfield issue muskets are the
1803 rifles.

Judging from arsenal records, the fuzee was phased out of production
by 1800. The several dozen identified in arsenal records of 1793
might shed some light on the nature of their distribution, i.e. a
mere handful of them in all arsenals does suggest they had been
intended for very limited distribution. But not to officers only. One
arsenals records specifically listed having 12 "Fusees and bayonets",
(itemized separately from their Muskets and bayonets). Officers with
bayonets ? Seems more likely for serjeants -- and very few serjeants
at that!

One more clue supports their being a different caliber, as several in
the fusil-thread-extraordinaire have noted: one arsenal identifies
fusee cartridges on hand, itemized separately from musket cartridges!
Seems certain to imply a different caliber, or perhaps different load
(e.g. shot -v- ball)

Not fusillading ;>)

Certainly the British 'Secret Orders' for the New Orleans campaign make no

Hi List,
I've been following the discussion on fusils with interest for
some time now. The discussion seems to have travelled in several
different directions before I was able to respond, but I thought I
would add what little I know. I think this may have come up before,
so this is merely reiteration. In 1812 (the only period I've done
any serious research, I'm afraid) the inspection returns were
standardized and laid out very simply. The third page is devoted to
inventory of the Regiment. As Tom already mentioned, each item is
divided into the number of Good, Repairable, Servicable and
Wanting. The categories under the heading of Return of Arms are as
follows: Pikes, Rifles, Rifle Swords, Carbines, Carbine Steel
Ramrods, Carbine Bayonets, Scabbards, Fusils, (Ramrods....),
Muskets, (Ramrods...), Magazines, Drums, Bugles, Armourer's Tools,
Portable Forge, and Tents. This is the form by which every Regiment
that I have seen was inspected during our time period. I'm sure
most of you have seen these, but the point I'm trying to make is
that all of these things listed are clearly government issued
items. They are not officer's private purchases, nor captured
American (or French) weapons.
To add to the confusion, however, the Royal Scots 4th battalion
was issued with 200 hundred fusils (or fusees) along with 1000
muskets while they were stationed in England. I cannot figure out
what the 4th battalion would do with 200 fusils. As suggested
before, they could have have had two companies of small boys not
large enough to handle full-sized muskets, but I was under the
impression that height was one of the recruiting requirements.
Would this have been waived if if was thought the young man would
continue growing?
On to more important things, however. The 1st battalion Royal
Scots, while serving in Canada, had six fusils. They were not
wanting any. According to the paylists, the 1st battalion had only
six sergeants serving in its Light Company. Although this is a
tenuous link, and I have to agree with Craig that it makes little
sense to have two different calibres in your company, this is the
only reason I can see for having so few fusils.

> A thought... do regimental returns normally show sergeants' pikes
in this time period? The 1814 return for the 41st doesn't.

I had an opportunity to go to the National Archives several years
ago and looked into some original documentation on the Inorporated
Militia. Amongst the papers I saw a couple lists of arms,
accoutrements, clothing, and necessaries of various companies turned
in when the unit disbanded in 1815. In almost all cases, there was
no "Regimental Coat" turned in by the Sergeants. This would seem to
indicate those Sergeants were wearing soming else -
likely "Sergeant's Coats". They had all the other kit, including
muskets, although there was no refernce in these particular
returns to Sashes. (Letters early in the war directed they were
to be made locally if unobtainable through regular means.) Those
coats and sashes may have been listed elsewhere, but either I failed
to spot them, or the document did not survive.

It might be the Pikes fall into one of those "not on this list"
categories.

Allison and I would just like to extend a heartfelt thankyou to all
our fellow reenactors and other list members who forwarded their
emails of support, and to those who remembered us in their thoughts
and prayers, during our recent medical crisis with our new daughter.
The caring and support of our "extended family" in the reenacting
community has been wonderful, and has helped us through a very
difficult time.

To clarify what has occurred: Brigid is now believed to have suffered
a massive stroke, probably sometime either at or shortly after her
birth. There was no intercranial bleeding, so the stroke was probably
caused by a blood clot in a major artery of the brain. As a result, a
large piece of brian tissue, spanning three lobes on the left side
and roughly a bit larger than a golf ball, was killed off by lack of
oxygen supply. While it is impossible to predict the long-term
effects of this stroke, we can safely assume that, due to it's sheer
magnitude, there will be at least some permanent deficit. The areas
of the brain affected include centers generally accepted to control
such things as motor function and linguistic capabilities. Only time
will tell exactly how much damage has been done.

The good news is that Brigid's tender age makes recovery far more
possible than would be expected in a mature stroke victim. In fact,
we have been told that a stroke of this magnitude would have either
killed or fully incapacitated an adult. As of now, the only
potentially serious effects seem to be some feeding/choking problems,
apnea spells, and mild seizures.

Brigid is now home from the hospital, and doing very well. She is
gaining weight, and seems to be quite contented overall. She is
getting considerable medical support: a home nurse visits three times
weekly, and she will be visited by an occupational therapist to guage
and begin therapy for deficits as they arise. Her case is being
closely monitored by her own pediatrician (who happens to be a
developmental specialist), as well as by the Hospital for Sick
Children's neurology and stroke teams. We intend to get her into
whatever early intervention programs are available as she becomes old
enough to benefit from them, in order to minimize the long-term
impact of the stroke.

Thanks once again to everyone for their support. We never cease to be
amazed at the wonderful relationship that exists between the great
majority of us in the reenacting community. What a terrific bunch of
folks! We're looking forward to seeing everyone at the beginning of
the next season.

Warmest regards,
Dale & Allison Kidd

Just a quick note to introduce myself. My name is Tommy and I am a Newbe in
the war of 1812. Actually I have been doing Living History for a long time
but for the most part it has been in the venue of Colonial America and the
War of Independance. My spacific field tends towards the history of magic
and science and its relation to the time period at hand on a cause and

espionage during not only the WO1812 but also during the Am. Rev. and the
Fr. and Indian War.

In any case I look forward to interacting with the group. I am presently
located in Knoxville and a member of the Tennessee Mountain Settlers. I
have recently relocated here from NY where I did a lot of work with the NY 3rd

It is with great pride that I announce a long overdue restructuring
of the Stoney Creek House Guard. In October, 21 new "founding
members" adopted and signed a new constitution, enabling us greater
autonomy and decision making.
In addition to this comes a new executive. Those people are:

President – Rick Peterson jr
Secretary – Rex Toews
Treasurer – Alex Cubercovic

What all this means is that we are still a volunteer organization
very closely tied to Stoney Creek Battlefield House, but are able to
now dictate our own finances, events schedule, and daily business.
Battlefield House has warmly embraced this new arrangement, and still
reserves many special rights and privileges.
These changes will pave the way for continued growth and success for
the House Guard.

I think it works a "1 degree of separation", so in your case below that would
be 1 degree.
Naturally, there would be no degree of separation from Jay Saunders.
And most of us on here may be only one degree from Johnny Depp due to General
Twist.
(Howz dat for getting it back to an 1812 track?)

actually the way it works is Kevin Bacon has a Bacon rating of 0. Anyone
who has worked with him has a rating of 1 (1 degree off of being Kevin
Bacon) thus if you worked with someone who has worked with Kevin Bacon you
have a bacon rating of 2 and they told two friends and so on and so
on........

This site will explain it all

Oh, to be sure. We pointed out this (the word fusillade) as well, but
noooooo...the idiot would never let go of his made-up word, "fusilage".
Ah, what grand times we've had.....

In the midst of this idiocy, the dolt at one time informed us all of the
"fusilage" made by the American "riflemen", and like a dog with an old rag would
not let go. Ever.
Even when it was pointed a "fusilage" (sic) is part of an airplane, or
otherwise not a word at all. (see: fuselage, fusillade, etc.)

Thanks once again, Bruce! If you're not careful, we're going to draft
you for the committee for next year's event . . . :-)

Just wanted to add my tuppence 'orth. There is free parking for the
event behind City Hall -- the drill is to park your vehicle, come inside
the building and pick up a parking pass from one of our lovely and
charming charming door volunteers (drawn from the 10th Royal Veterans
and the Stoney Creek House Guard), then put the pass in your vehicle's
window so that the commissionaires won't ticket you.

A map and directions are available through a link from our website at
www.historicmerchants.com/xmasgathering.html. The parking lot is
accessible from MacNab, Hunter, and Bay Streets.

Box lunches will be available onsite, with the proceeds going to help
support the event for next year. Four and Twenty Blackbirds will also
be onsite with their usual treats for those of us who suffer from a
sweet tooth.

We're up to over 30 merchants (not quite Mississinewa yet, but we're
working on it!), plus a number of display tables from sites and events
and of course display and recruiting tables from a variety of local
re-enactment groups.

As always, do feel free to call or e-mail if you have any questions.
I'm now getting to the point where I can't wait for the event to happen
(and not only because I'm looking forward to actually getting some sleep
once it's over . . . !).

Hope to see you there,
-- Sioux
