A RESPONSE; Well, another great author has died on us amatuer historian types;
I'm reading his "Invasion of Canada, War of 1812-1813". Very good book. I'm
finding this book very good on the subject of the War of 1812. david a sigler

TORONTO (Reuters) - Pierre Berton, whose populist tales of Canadian history made
him one of the country's best known writers and media personalities, has died at
age of 84.

The prize-winning author died in a Toronto hospital on Tuesday afternoon, a
spokeswoman said. The cause of death was not disclosed, but CBC television
reported he died of heart failure.

Berton was familiar to millions of Canadians through his trademark bow tie,
fierce nationalism and frequent television appearance. His books brought to life
the country's most exciting historical moments, ranging from the Klondike gold
rush to the taking of Vimy Ridge in World War I.

Born in 1920 and raised in the Yukon, Berton began his career as a newspaper and
magazine journalist. He became the city editor of a Vancouver newspaper at the
age of 21, before moving to Toronto in 1947. He edited the national newsmagazine
Maclean's and later joined the Toronto Star as a columnist.

Berton also appeared on a number of CBC television programs, including
"Close-Up," "The Pierre Berton Show," and the long-running "Front Page
Challenge."

But he entered a new phase of popularity when he began writing books about one
of his favorite topics, Canadian history. The strong narratives and colorful
personalities in his books awoke Canadians to a rich past many were unaware of.

The prolific author's 50 books include "Klondike," about the famous gold rush,
"The National Dream" and "The Last Spike," on building the country's railways,
and "Vimy," which covered one of the Canadian military's most heroic battles.

His works won him the country's top literary honor, the Governor General's
Award, several times.

Berton was also well know for his sense of humor. He appeared on a CBC comedy
program this fall, demonstrating how roll a marijuana joint. He recommended
using the pages of his own books.

The passing of Pierre Berton gave me pause to think
again on the thanks we owe him for popularizing
Canadian history and making it accessible to those who
thought it dry, dull and boring. Without his efforts,
many people would not be active in his hobby. Of
course, Berton did not always get the facts right, but
the point is he wasn't an academic, but a journalist,
first and foremost.
As a journalist, he brought the people to life who
lived our history. He took history from being one damn
fact after another and wove it into a vibrant tapestry.
Let the academic historians debate the realities
and consequences of the minutaie because without Berton
firing the zeal of budding, grade-school historians
there'd be a damn sight fewer scrutinizing our history.
Berton lit the path for many to follow. Because of him
our understanding of our history is richer and will be
enriched in years to come.

(With apologies, as always, for the cross-posting . . .)

Just a quick reminder to everyone that the Fifth Annual Historic
Merchants' Christmas Gathering takes place this Saturday, December 4th,
10:00 am to 4:00 p.m. at Melrose United Church, at the corner of Locke
Street and Homewood Avenue in Hamilton, Ontario. Over 20 period
merchants will be on hand to provide quality goods for your Christmas
shopping pleasure, and for those of you who require that last butter
tart (or two . . . or three) to make it through the winter, 4 and 20
Blackbirds will be providing hot and cold refreshments as well as a wide
variety of their traditional baked goods throughout the day. Come for
breakfast (cinnamon buns baked on-site that morning!) or elevenses.
Melrose United Church is situated just at the end of Locke Street,
Hamilton's renowned "Antiques Alley," and there are seven museums within
a short driving distance, so come on out and make a day of it!
Admission is $3.00 per person, but we'll let you in free of charge if
you come dressed in period attire (or if you happen to be 12 years old
or younger).

For further information, please check out the website at
www.historicmerchants.com.

I'm given to understand that MapQuest has been having a problem
producing maps today, so the "click here for a map" link on the website
may or may not be functional at the moment. The directions are
(thankfully) easy:

  From Toronto or London:
Take the 403 into Hamilton, and take the Aberdeen exit (you can only go
one way on this exit). Follow Aberdeen to Locke Street, and turn left
(you can only turn left onto Locke Street from Aberdeen). Melrose
United is one block down on your right. We suggest that you turn right
at Homewood Avenue (the cross street to Locke at the church corner) and
park on the street or follow the signs around the block to the church
parking lot. Parking is free!

If you have any questions or inquiries, please contact Christine Bingham
at c.bingham@....

Hope to see you there!

Best regards,
-- Sioux

        The Upper Canada Sutler's Alliance

                            Dear Fellow Sutlers,

No matter the event, there has always
been a special bond
with many of us in Sutler's Row. The
friendliness, warmth
and support that abounds in our area has
been noted and
commented on by both re-enactors and the
public alike.

We've helped each other set up, tear down, encouraged, picked each
others' brains with marketing ideas, spelled each other for breaks,
the list is truly endless. The bottom line is that we support each
other in ways unlike a typical retail atmosphere, and visitors to
Sutler's Row are quick to notice the difference.
We would like to form a sutler's alliance for all these reasons and
more. We propose to take this camaraderie a step further to form a
casual, friendly organization that would give us an outlet to share
ideas and concerns. Some of the benefits we foresee would be:
Inexpensive group insurance for those who need it.
A strong marketing tool and event information in the form of a
website.
A few meetings a year to share ideas and have some fun.
A stronger voice in event co-ordination.
A support system extended to all event co-ordinators to help their
event run smoothly, such as volunteer sutler co-ordinators provided
by the UCSA.
This winter we will be putting together our mandate and a plan of
action. We hope to have our official charter meeting in March at the
Living History Conference.
If you would like us to keep you in touch with further information,
or you have any suggestions on what would be important to you in
such an alliance, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from
you.

Mai oui, vin blanc. And each year at a gathering as close to the Emperor's
birthday as possible we celebrate our regimental fete and recite the
circumstances under which we earned our battle motto, "Je passe quand meme!"

In Europe (today perhaps?) they are having a big ceremony reenacting the
distribution of the Eagles. Since the 21eme already has one presented to
them from the modern day French regimental descendents, they did not attend.
It is my understanding though that units came from all over the continent
to partake.

Indeed, I think the French idea of call him 'le petit caporal' came from the
memory that the British soildiers called the 1st Duke of Marlborough
'Corporal John' out of admiration and affection. The French began calling Nap
their
answer to Marlborough hence the name.

Well shuckins', I thot all you fellers up nort were bi. Lingual that is.
<VBG>

With my best Peppy le Pew accent I said, "But of course, white wine." The
regimental fete refers to basically a party, in honor of the Empereur, but
renewing the honor of our regiment even in defeat. At the Battle of Novi in
1799 the French were beaten by the Russians and Austrians under Suvarov. An
element of the 21st (21eme) demi-brigade (regimental equal) was cut off by
the Russians. Rallying under the leadership of Sergent Pauli, they over-ran
a Russian battery and blew a hole in the enemy line through which they
escaped with the cry, "je passe quand meme" or, "I will pass anyway." In a
battle that largely erased all the gains made under General Bonaparte the
previous years it was a bright spot for the French. The tradition is
carried forward into the 21st century in the modern French army. Here
endeth the lesson.

I lied. In a distant North American connection the 2nd battalion of the
Regiment Guyenne was sent to defend Canada against the English in the build
up in the 1750s. After that war they merged with the regiment Vaubecourt
(not sure of that spelling) to create the 21eme Demi-Brigade. As one who
also does the French and Indian War with les Francais it is a remarkable
coincedence. Unfortunately for me, I'm locked into a Compagnie Franche de
la Marine (Independent Company of the Navy) and have declined membership
with the reenacted Regiment Guyenne.

En tout amitie, (In all friendship,)

Michael, sergent in both French units

A very big thanks you to all of you who attended and/or participated in
the Fifth Annual Historic Merchants' Christmas Gathering! Although I

every merchant with whom I spoke was as thrilled with their day as were
we on the organizing committee.

As always, your comments and suggestions on the event and how to improve
it are very welcome. Please to feel free to mail me off-list at

List,

I've got a flintlock holster pistol I'm looking to sell and thought I'd lay
it out for y'all to have a go at before moving it on to Ebay or some other
sales outlet. It's a British Sea Service pistol as far as I know, has an
iron ramrod and brass furniture. It looks more like a light dragoon pistol
to me but I'm no expert on British firearms so I can't say. I think it's .62
cal. but it's been so long since I've shot it I'm not sure... in short I
can't tell you much about this thing other than it's a single shot,
flintlock holster pistol from the late 18th century or early 19th century.
The frizzen is slightly loose but this could be remedied with a shim in the
frizzen bridle. The lock throws good sparks and as long as you've got a good
flint in it it'll shoot. I'm asking a firm $150 for it plus whatever
shipping is which shouldn't be too much. I'm attaching a picture of the
pistol but if for some reason it doesn't come through let me know and I'll
forward it to your personal email.

Greetings,

On this past Saturday my local F & I group [which includes Brit's,
French & Indians] celebrated the Christmas season as part of a "Visit
with St. Nicholas" at a local city park with old building donated to
form a village.

We were in a log cabin away from the 19th Cen. dwellings and had a
veritable feast including roast pork, vinegar slaw, a hot pot, rice
pudding, bread & cheese and for my first time HAGGIS! Locally made and
it was quite spicy having a lot of black pepper. Was boiled in a large
pot of "neeps and tatties" and was great and topped it off with a piece
of black walnut pie. Oh the horrors of having to eat period meals
......... NOT! ; ^ )

I'll quit bragging. No sutlers, but a great way to begin celebrating
the holidays!

That's why I put the caveat "as supreme rulers go" (or something like it) on
my post a while back. In terms of boorish behavior, a cavalier attitude
toward the lives of their people, bleed 'em dry with taxes, send out armies
for pay or greed or pettiness, there isn't a great deal to choose from among
the assorted rulers of 1750 to 1830. Some might be enlightened on a point
or two, while others might work to turn back the clock on previous reforms.
It's just that some were more successful than others and gathered more of
the limelight.

Just my opinion, worth what you paid for it.
