If you are Canadian, and you purchase a musket in
Canada, you do not have to register it with the
Canadian Firearms Registry. According to the
Government, it does not meet the criteria for registry
because it is a flintlock. If it was percussion cap,
that would be a different story.

Hi Rob...

I wrote a decent little article on the Norfolk site about buying weapons
that includes the "legalities"...

It's at http://www.uppercanadianheritage.com/norfolk/firearms.htm

No registration needed for an "antique-replica" flintlock... thank
goodness... but given time, they'll probably find some way to tax 'em!

       Y'rs...

Hi,
Under Canuck legislation, flintlock long arms (muskets and rifles) do not
have to be registered. It is possible to actually register a musket--I know
someone who did this. It might be really difficult to get one taken off the
list, and if you do, you will have to go through the whole transfer process
if you ever sell it.
You do have to store and transport a reproduction musket like any
firearm: Unloaded and locked up in a case or made
inoperable. The Niagara firearms guy agreed with me that if a flint is
removed, a flintlock is stored or transported legally. Trigger guard locks
are cheap and a good idea for storage, transportation and for
events. Also, for anyone coming into Canada, you need to tell Customs what
you are bringing in. ( You can bring in up to 8kg of black powder per
person as well) The Canadian Firearms Center has a web site with
information for re-enactors. I do not have the url at home, but it should
be easy to find.
Percussion weapons and pretty much any kind of working reproduction
pistol are treated like modern weapons under this law.
There has been some indication that the present Federal government is
reviewing the whole registration situation, which has proven to be terribly
expensive.
I understand that the explosive regulations have just changed, and the
maximum quantity of black powder that can be stored without having a
licensed magazine for the purpose is 10 kg, not 25kg, as was earlier the
case. This might impact on some unit purchases. I will try to get some
confirmation on this.

I thought everyone might be interested in a play set
in the 1812 era being put on in Ashland, Ohio this
summer.

The Johnny Appleseed Heritage Centre is putting on the
Johnny Appleseed Historial Drama. Set in the early
1800s and leading up to the war of 1812, this
inspiring story is based on true accounts of John
"Appleseed" Chapman's experiences in north central
Ohio. Chapman’s compassionate rapport with area’s
pioneer families and Delaware Indian tribes provides
the underpinning for this unforgettable story. He
finds himself caught in the midst of growing conflict
and tension as the British threaten the security of
the area at the start of the war of 1812.

I've posted a bit of information on
http://www.generalbrock.com and more information is
available at the centre's Web site, located at
http://www.jahci.org.

Looks like fun!

Well if you buy 25Ib's of blackpowder in bulk (box), to get around
this law just divide it up to all your members. That's what we do on
occasion. Have you seen the price of powder lately? The last time we
bought some it was close to $16.00 a Ib!
In regards to registering a musket. As mentioned you don't have to
but do take note of who you vote for in the next Canadian Federal
election. The Conservative party say's they'll scrap the gun registry
program if elected into power....
I just love watching the Liberal party meltdown with the Adscam
enquiry.

Storing, Displaying and Transporting Antique Firearms

Link: http://www.cfc-
ccaf.gc.ca/en/owners_users/guide/default.asp#crossing7

Non-Restricted Firearms
All firearms, except muzzle-loading firearms, must be transported
unloaded. Muzzle-loading firearms can be transported loaded between
hunting sites, if the firing cap or flint is removed.

Individuals may leave non-restricted firearms unattended in their
vehicles if the firearms are unloaded and safely locked in the trunk
or a similar compartment of the vehicle. If the vehicle does not
have a trunk or compartment, the vehicle must be locked and the
firearms left inside, unloaded and out of sight.

In remote wilderness areas where it is legal to discharge a firearm,
non-restricted firearms can be left in unattended vehicles that do
not have a trunk or similar compartment, if the firearms are:

unloaded; and
out of sight.
If:

your vehicle does not have a trunk or similar compartment, and
your firearms cannot be locked inside,
the firearms must also be unable to be fired by using a secure
locking device, unless they are required for predator control.

Storing, Displaying and Transporting Antique Firearms

Antique firearms are exempt from licensing and registration
requirements. However, under the Firearms Act antique firearms must
be stored, displayed and transported unloaded.

Antique firearms may be left unattended in a vehicle's locked trunk
or similar compartment. If the vehicle does not have a trunk or
compartment, lock the vehicle and leave the firearms inside and out
of sight.

The Definition of an Antique

Link: http://www.cfc-
ccaf.gc.ca/en/owners_users/fact_sheets/antique.asp

The Criminal Code defines antique firearms as:

firearms manufactured before 1898 that were not designed or re-
designed to discharge rim-fire or centre-fire ammunition, or
firearms prescribed as antique firearms in the Criminal Code
regulations. These are:

Black Powder Reproductions:

of flintlock, wheel-lock or matchlock firearms, other than handguns,
manufactured after 1897; (All other reproductions must be registered
and owners must have a firearm licence to possess them. For example,
reproductions of percussion cap muzzle-loading firearms like
American Civil War Enfield and Springfield rifles will be considered
firearms and not antiques.)

I was intrigued by one section of the post from "Fawkes" on use and
storage of flintlocks:

"If: your vehicle does not have a trunk or similar compartment, and
your firearms cannot be locked inside,
the firearms must also be unable to be fired by using a secure
locking device, unless they are required for predator control."

So, although its not actually a "firearm" in the meaning of the act,
I can keep my musket loaded, with ball, loose on the seat of my buggy
if I need it for 'predator control'? Cool!

[ Do ya suppose door-to-door hawkers count as predators? :) ]

Dear List
On a serious note: if anyone out there is looking for a source of
lead for either musket balls or flint leads (or whatever) a great
source for me has been my dentist!

The backing for dental x-ray plates are paper thin sheets of pure
lead about 1.5" square. It melts easily, isn't adulterated with
other stuff like tire weights or fishing sinkers and is probably
free. My dentist sells his old silver and gold amalgam but says "the
man" doesn't want the lead, so I got 4 kilos (10 lbs) for the asking
and in exchange for a couple cast balls for his kids.

If you could please write the LDC to voice your support of the town
or state protecting from development and hopefully acquire the land
to incorporate it into the existing Park. The parcel of land is 110
acres that extends from the British landing point at Horse Island to
the park property. In that parcel, according to period sketches
copied into Lossings book on 1812, lies the bodies of the UK dead
that could not be evacuated. I believe saving this land is a most
important way of doing what we intend to do every time we don our
uniforms, remember perserve and share the memories of the men who we
honor through our hobby. Imagine if people had the same chance 100
plus years ago to save Lundy's Lane. We curse those buildings
everytime we drive by. Lets not let it happen again.

Hello Folks...

I should add an FAQ to the "Olde Woolen Blanket", but that requires
effort... Soon it will be there.

Anyway, to answer the questions asked so far (and thanks to those who
inquired)...

- - - - - - - - - - -

If you register and place an ad, the main contact for that ad will be
you... It will not "go through" anyone else. There is a section for
"Contact Information" on each ad and, if you register, people can use a
form built on to each ad to respond to you privately as well. (See below
for privacy issues...)

Ads are free for everyone.

Sutlers and merchants are more than welcome to post ads.

There are sections for... "Modern Items", "Car Pooling", "Lost and Found",
"Help Wanted"... as well as items for sale... Have a look around! You
don't need to register to browse!

If you register, I (and the folks who do help me with
UpperCanadianHeritage.Com) will NOT give out your information and will not
spam you (I hate spam!!!!!!!!!) or sell your information to ANYONE. But,
be warned, there are these nasty "spam-bots" known as "spiders" that will
fly onto websites and what-have-you and leech out e-mail addies. I am
working towards making the site "spider-unfriendly" but that's still in the
offing. You MAY want to "register" with your proper e-mail addy but use a
public one in the "Contact Information" field. The "Registration" e-mail
addy is pretty safe from spam from us or the infamous spammers, but the
"Contact Information" on the ad forms is visible to the public... and ergo:
Spam-Bots. (Does anyone REALLY buy Viagara or Vicodin online??? And who
are these Canadian doctors who'll write a prescription online without
issue? My doc won't say my name unless I'm in his office with my OHIP card
in his hands!)

- - - - - - - - - - -

There you have it! Thanks for your questions and input and I really hope
that this new site is useful and helpful to everyone in the re-enactment
and living history communities!

This should be of interest to the jaktars of the group.

ADMIRAL Horatio Nelson's favourite ship, on which he is said to have
seduced Lady Hamilton and lost an eye in battle, has been found off
the coast of Uruguay.

International treasure-divers said yesterday that they had found HMS
Agamemnon, a 64-gun vessel which was the pride of Britain's naval
fleet when it went down in 1809.

It is obvious, that beside the claimed intent of Free Trade and
Sailors Rights that the US invasion of Canada was an effort to expel
the British presence from North America. Perhaps, had the US
military been ably led and the government not so divided it may have
just happened because of the weak state of defences in Canada in
1812. But I was wondering a what if. It is often argued that the
British had no intent but to defend Canada. That hey did not wish to
grab any land from the US. Was this claim/strategy out of neccesity
because they did not have the means to do so? Here is the what if.
If they had the means, ie men and resources, ad just trounce the US
in 1812 or 1813 to the point of a complete military victory is it
wrong to supose that instead of just using conquered land
as "bargaining chips" that they may have decided to hold on to some
parts such as the northern half of Maine (which had always been an
impediment to the communications between the Maritimes and Quebec and
Montreal)or the upper peninsula of Michigan or the lower for that
matter. Maybe New Orleans to control trade. Demand control of the
Oregon territory. I just cant see them giving up earned land without
reason. What do other people think? Has anyone ever ran into
comments about keeping conquered land in their research.

take care all

For a really good examination of British intentions in regard to the
Michigan Terr, & the old Northwest check out
A Wampum Denied by Sandy Antal. Aside from taking a very good look at
British plans for an Indian "Buffer State" in the Old Northwest it is also an
excellent examination of the campaign in the NW from the British/Canadian
perspective.

Greetings List,
I was at a museum studies course in Stratford over the past three
days and we got a bonus in way of a tour of their archives and
costume storage facility. Anyway we were told that one way that they
get rid of body odour on costumes is to spray the fabric with vodka.
Potato based vodka apparently works best.
They just use a vapouriser type sprayer and spray the smelly garment
with vodka. So if you have a garment that you can't wash or dry clean
often perhaps the Stratford vodka spray system may be just the thing.
I know it seems a waste of alcohol but it is only vodka after all not
12 year old single malt Scotch.
Best regards,

Hi all this is the last call for any one who wishes to partake in the
rememberace/conservation/1812 muster weekend in Sackets Harbor New
York. If you allof a sudden find that your weekend is open come on
over and pay a visit a perform a tremedous service to the men of
1812
Below is the official press release and the description of the event
for reenactors. The latter first
Greetings distant but esteemed friends!

Colin and Connie Barone (Park Supervisor) and I have put together
this very
last minute but important ceremony/event has been scheduled for this
coming
weekend to educate people about and bring public awareness to the
Crown
Forces and their Native American Allies side of the Sackets Harbor
Battlefield--a relatively undeveloped area which has recently come to
attention as a possible site for commercial development. There will be
official representatives from both the US and CAN government and
military,
veteran's organizations, and Native Peoples present, as well as a
number of
US, Canadian and British living history groups--even lapels pins and
awards
from the mayor!

it was supposed to be a small local ceremony/event, but it is
shaping up to be a bit bigger, and may be a lot of fun --we have
people
coming from as far as Indiana, and we'd rather you hear about it
first from
us, even at this late date.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET THERE with sleeping stuff (doesn't have to
be
period this time!)--- everything else, from on-site housing with
bathrooms
and showers to powder, groceries, period taverns in town, and catered
meals
is provided.

*****THE ONLY STIPULATION is that as far as our in-ranks appearance
goes,
this is an " 'authentics' only" event: no buckskinner/rondevous-
types, no
non-Natives portraying Natives, and no beards or moustaches
whatsoever for
military impressions (sideburns are encouraged).*****

Again, my sincere apologies for this last minute invitation--this was
originally organized as a small event, but as interest has grown--and
even
though it's probably too late for you to come (although we hope you
do)--we
feel we should include you and your people as a courtesy.

IMPORTANT: Contact Connie Barone Barone <
Constance.Barone@...
>, or me (781-646-1169) or Colin < USMarine1812@... > with any
questions
and/or to confirm the numbers of your people attending.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO MEMBERS OF YOUR ORGANIZATION AND TO ANY
1812-1816 LIVING HISTORY GROUPS THAT YOU THINK MAY BE QUALIFIED AND
INTERESTED IN ATTENDING--CIVILIAN IMPRESSIONS TOO
