Tried to check out your photos this a.m., but couldn't get any farther than
the main site, using the address you gave. Could you post them to the 1812
Photo section?

BTW, the last couple posts I've made are just my general pedantic streak
coming out :), not a shot at you or anyone else doing Native impressions.

Thank you to all who jumped in with good comments, and thanks to
those who supported what I said on this topic. I bowed out because
the tone was starting to change, but wanted to jump in and say thanks.

Thanks!

And remember, do NOT have leather tassles hanging from your leather
goods if you are doing Native or frontier guy with close connection
to Natives.

Greetings,
I don't want to be beating a dead horse but when Mr. Arnt says
no "tassles" does he mean fringe? You know, like what a "Mountain
Man" or Western Native interpreter or a T.V. or movie Davy Crockett
might have hanging from their shirt or coat sleeves and yoke. Just
thought I would ask. Thanks

Hey Bruce,

maybe I'm using the wrong word but when I say tassles, I mean those
strips of leather that are cut to make little hanging "fingers" of
leather that dangle down and move around and stuff. It's just
decorative trim, but like I say, has no history in the style of east
coast Natives. If you are portraying a Great Lakes or Eastern
seaboard Native, or a Frontiersman who is closely associated with
Natives, you shouldn't have tassles on your stuff. That is only from
the traditions of Plains Indians, in the mid continent.

Calvin.

Greetings Calvin and Group,
I kind of figured you meant fringe when you said tassles. Tassles
makes me think of exotic dancers spinning sequined streamers from the
ends of......well you get the picture.

honor role of units represented on the e-list. If your unit is not shown,

4th Company, 1st Battalion 2nd foot regiment {Queens}
Here is a brief History of our company taken from our website http://www
jaholmes.demon.co.uk/secndft/
The regiment was part of wellesleys army which landed in portugal in july
1808 and was present at the battle of vimeiro, where the french marshal
Junot was defeated. vimeiro was not the first time that the queens had
helped defeat the french; for over 15 years the regiment had fought the
french in the west indies {1794-97}, ireland {1798} holland {1799} and egypt
{1800} earning a battle honour in the latter place. they also acted as
marines in 1794 and took part in the glorious first of june........
for more history and pictures etc check out our website we are all based
around surrey and sussex areas of the uk.

As we near the end of the campaign season, and for new listoids, I offer the
honor role of units represented on the e-list. If your unit is not shown,
please hit reply and insert your unit's name. An introduction if appropriate is
always welcome. Perhaps this will also facilitate the creation of a new list of
US forces with contacts. (Nudge, nudge, hint, hint)

(farmers comment was a joke), history, clothing/uniform, etc. I'd be
interested to know more about some New England militia organizations.

Thanks,

Hi,

Pitchforks? Lots & Lots!

35 Battalions - Probably independent battalions of a regional nature.

My 2 cents!

2 companies with muskets, one with rifles - seems to have averaged
about 50 men plus officers per company. When we saw the remains of
their banner at the historical society, we decide that this was just
too good to pass up.

Very true- and small in size, as well. Pretty well armed tho' - had the
bucks to buy their own from the Springfield Arsenal. They seem to have
spent their money on arms, not uniforms...its nice to see folks who got
their priorities straight.

Background-

Originally part of John Stark's militia brigade at Bennington during
the revwar, stuck around as a Sunday drill an' parade club between the
wars. "Dressed as hunters, wearing round hats" according to the only
written description prior to 1814, when they were called up for Federal
duty to help garrison the forts at Portsmouth. At this point they were
issued "grey roundabouts" from State stores along with the LaFayette
Volunteer Artillery (four iron 4 pdr's) who were also ordered out - As
well as the Hillsbourough Co. Horse, about 40 well dressed nabobs from
wealthy families.

Sometime during their tour they were issued regular army uniforms,
their duty seems to have consisted of picking fights with the watering
parties from the blockading squadron (a 74, 2 frigates and a brig)

So Ted, would they be considered a regular unit, or a militia? Just wondering
which category to place them in. I'm guessing militia as I don't believe the
regular army regiments had territorial distinctions.

Cool stuff Fitz, thanks. So the 35th was three companies strong. Did the other
battalions (35!) exist in reality or on paper? I'm thinking if they are roughly
the same size then 35 x 150 = 5250 men, a very substantial force indeed. Did
other New England states have that many embodied men I wonder?

As far as the list goes, definitely militia - unless of course, they
volunteered for their federal service which would have made them short-
term regulars. i understand, however, that they were called up by the
governor, so file us under militia.

NH had a population of about 100,000 in those days, could call out
about 10,000 militia plus the four state regiments (1st -4th NH Regts
of Infantry). NH was also the primary recruiting ground of a couple of
Federal regiments - the 21st Infantry, for instance (surely our cousins
north of the border remember that flock of farmers with pitchforks -
they're the ones who captured the guns on the hill at Lundy's Lane with
their single-tined pitchforks, and then held them against all efforts <
g>)

Massachusetts could field 60,000 militia, Vermont just a tad less than
NH. Don't know the figures for Connecticut and Rhode Island, Maine was
part of Massachusetts in those days.

Massachusetts had some pretty uniforms, though.

Not at all! I can't speak for New England Militia but Maryland was organized
into 51 Regiments which were organized into 12 brigades of 4-5 regiments
each. Some of the brigades were augmented by Rifle battalions and Artillery
companies. The brigades were further gathered into 3 divisions, each
commanded by a Major-General. Maryland was also divided into districts for
the purpose of fielding 11 regiments of Cavalry.

The best brigade was supposedly the 3rd composed of men from Baltimore City.
At North Point, the 3rd was composed of the 5th, 6th, 27th, 39th and 51st
Regiments, with the 5th Cavalry Regiment, the 1st Rifle Battalion and a
company from the 1st Artillery Regiment in support. All were Maryland
Militia except for 3 companies of Pennsylvania Militia which were scattered
amongst the infantry. The entire force amounted to approximately 3200 men.

It was the 3rd brigade which gave the British a bloody nose at North Point.

Virginia Militia had at least 68 Regiments. A colour of the 68th regiment
was captured supposedly at Bladensburg by the 85th. However, there is some
proof that the colour was actually taken at Hampton in June 1813 by the Royal
Marines. The 68th was not present at Bladensburg but a company was involved
in the defense of Hampton.
