Description
This discussion group is for a new tactical system named "Rules of Engagement for Tactical Objectives" (RETO) intended for World War II reenactors.
The “Rules of Engagement for Tactical Objectives” was developed by Alan Miltich of the WW2 Historical Reenactment Society's (HRS) 5thSS "Wiking" PanzerPionier unit. This system was inspired by the memories of a small, early morning tactical engagement that took place before a Sunday public event in May, 2002.
In that pickup battle, the outnumbered Germans were required to recover a case of Norwegian "Heavy Water" and keep the searching Allied units from finding it. The Germans found the Heavy Water but failed to keep it secure, and the sense of urgency, purpose and suspense of that short tactical was memorable. It was a silly little scenario at the time, but in many ways more entertaining than the typical 'scenario' that most battle planners feel obligated to provide.
This new system is for reenactors that enjoy working with strategic goals, imposed tactical moral check, chain of command, sense of urgency, and some cap busting thrown in! Inspired by the GRAEF system, there are points awarded as objectives are collected. Unlike the GRAEF system, there is very little subjectivity and umpires have little influence on the actual score. The umpires are there to keep things moving and to interpret rule situations. The 'winning' side is known within an hour after the event has concluded!
The "Rules of Engagement" (RETO) may seem complicated at first, but after your first patrol it becomes quite natural.
The basic sections are: Patrols (defining how groups of people can move or suffer morale check), Casualties (focusing on keeping units together, not broken apart because of 'aid stations'), Objectives (how to score points by retreiving them to the C.P.)
Please take your time reading them from the "Files" section of this group, and offer your feedback!

RETO success
Any feedback on the recent Fort Custer RETO event? I had one bad situation ... one of the objectives was a pair of boots hanging from a tree at about 5 feet

Re: RETO change
I agree with this statement: "I think the decision may have to be based on the number of participants." As a person who has been an over-all CO at events

Re: RETO change
I think it all comes down to, how many men are taking the field. Last reto we had 10 man squads leaving the base. That worked fine because of the number of

Re: RETO change
Another thing is the map. All the obejectives should be posted. Axis, Allies, and both. No items should be marked on the map as to whom it belongs too. That

Re: RETO change
I like the new idea of larger patrol sizes. Once you are down to that low th only thing you are good for is recon patrol. If yo get seperated you are suppose
