Jo ("Maryjo Harper" <mjoharper@...>) is going to the Laurie R King event at Powells on Monday. Anyone else interested in going, maybe you can carpool. I recommend getting there by 6:30pm (at the latest) because seats are limited and they fill up fast. -malia
In this latest adventure featuring the intrepid Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, Laurie R. King takes readers into the frenetic world of silent films — where the pirates are real and the shooting isn't all done with cameras. Pirate King (Bantam) is a treasure chest — thrilling, intelligent, romantic, a
swiftly unreeling masterpiece of suspense. "The Mary Russell series is the most sustained feat of imagination in mystery fiction today" (Lee Child). Editor's note: A prize will be awarded to the best dressed pirate, so come in costume!
Book Club meets early this week, because I will be on vacation for our regular
time.
We will discuss The Girl Who Fell From The Sky by Heidi Durrow. She used to
live here in Oregon.
Our next tome is the Team of Rivals by Donna Kearns Goodwin.
Also for those of you interested in Andi's talk on How to Write a Novel in 30
Days, that will start at 6:30pm.
So feel free to show up for the first 30mins of our book club and then sneak out
to hear Andi. ;-) Her talk will be very interesting.

One of our member's, Mary Jo, came up with a wonderful suggestion concerning our current book, Team of Rivals by Donna Kearns Goodwin.
Since it is such a large book we are going to focus our discussion on the first part "The Rivals". This is about 320 pages and will hopefully allow us to all finish and have a great discussion.
I will admit, I was starting to feel overwhelmed by the size of this book and focusing on just one section will allow me to enjoy the book more than had I tried to force myself to finish it all.
Hope you all have a wonderful 3-day weekend.
Thank You to all our Veterans and their families for your service and sacrifice
Heidi Durrow, the author of the last book we read "The Girl who fell from the Sky", will be coming to Portland in March 2012. This author talk will be put on by Multnomah County Library for their everybody reads program. Get your tickets here: http://www.literary-arts.org/boxoffice/220/ or at Ticketmaster.
Thanks Kristie

Hi,

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY THROUGH READING!
The Everybody Reads 2012 selection is The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow
In partnership with Multnomah County Library and The Library Foundation, Literary Arts is pleased to announce an upcoming event with Heidi W. Durrow.
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky received Barbara Kingsolver's 2008 Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction. Kingsolver has said, "When I first envisioned the Bellwether Prize, I
imagined all the best qualities of fiction: vivid language, compelling
characters, and clear moral vision. Novels just like this one--Heidi Durrow's breathless telling of a tale we've never heard before. Haunting and lovely, pitch-perfect, this book could not be more timely."
We hope you, your friends and neighbors will join us on March 6th to hear the author discuss her beautifully exquisite story about identity and survival.

We meet a week earlier for this one.
Thursday, February 2, 2012 (1st Thursday) The Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss A female broncobuster? It seems doubtful, but with most of the able-bodied men off fighting in World War I, Oregon rancher George Bliss decides to take a chance on Martha Lessen. Barely 19 years old, Martha has three times the natural horse sense as more seasoned wranglers. With a talent for breaking horses to saddle in a uniquely gentle way, she soon proves herself in a man's world, becoming an indispensable part of the fabric of the community in the meantime
I found out my settings were changed on the voting form, so I am opening it up again. If you didn't get a chance to vote, please vote before this Sunday. here is the online link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7D7NVT6

Now for the question...
Do you want to take the month off in July for book club?
I will be in Washington DC during that month. I can get someone else to run book club that month, if the majority of you would like to meet.
Let me know by March 8th, so that I can plan a replacement if needed.

I have books and cd audiobooks available of our current book Cleopatra by Stacy Schiff.
Just ask a copy at the circulation desk.
Also please send in any suggestions (titles or genres) you have for books to read in the fall. I plan to have a voting form ready for our June meeting.
I use a website called survey monky to create free web survey. It is safe to use and you do not need to log in to use it. If you would rather have a paper ballot, let me know.
When voting:
Please check ALL titles that you would be interested in reading. The titles with the most votes will be our next selections.
I plan to pick the top 7 books. However, if the results do not have a clear top
7 then I might select a title or 2 that the group hasn't voted on.
Book Club is this Thursday July 12th at 6pm in the Rose Room.
Sam will be running this meeting while I am in Washington DC. She will also have copies of our next book ready for you to pick up at the meeting.
Next book:
Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - August 9
I am also attaching the handout for the next books from our latest voting. Sam will have a hard copy at the meeting too. Out of the 13 people who voted, these books had 5 or more votes. (i believe one of the PD James books was the top pick with 7 votes)
I am taking suggestions for the next series of books we will read.
Please send your suggestions to me by our December 13th meeting.
This series, I am especially interested in getting a good mix of fiction and
non-fiction books.
Since we use library books, I aim for a total 12 - 18 copies in order to add
them to the voting list.

If you still need a copy of our November book club selection: Death Comes to
Pemberley by PD James. There are copies (large print, regular print, and cd
audio) available at the circulation desk at the library.
Happy Halloween!
