Description

"The Writing Road to Reading," by Romalda Bishop Spalding, is the textbook for "The Spalding Method of Phonics for Teaching Speech, Writing, Reading; For Teachers, For Parents and For Those Learning English as a Second Language" (quoted from the cover). Mrs. Spalding worked side-by-side with the brilliant neurosurgeon, Dr. Samuel Orton, who did extensive research into how we learn to read. Dr. Orton is known as "the grandfather of multisensory education."

This moderated list is for those who use the WRTR text, either in their classroom or in their homes, and for those inquiring about the Spalding Method. All teachers, and potential teachers, of the WRTR are invited. It is also a resource for those using Reading Works, a "companion" for WRTR, written by Jay Patterson. This list is not endorsed or supported by Spalding Education International or any other WRTR support organizations or materials.

Veteran users of the WRTR are especially welcomed and urged to share their experiences.

It is requested that messages stay on the topic of the Spalding Method as presented in WRTR, and on Reading Works (or other materials written by Jay Patterson). Although comparisons to other methods may be helpful, messages actively promoting other methods will not be approved by the moderators.

Re: new
The Manual (WRTR) is the only book you need to teach the Spalding Method. The way you reinforce the phonograms is to drill them daily, both by dictating them

Re: Where have your children ended the school year?
If you have the 5th Edition of the WRTR you'll find the Grade Level Objectives starting of page 443. There you can compare expectations - where mastery is
