Gosh, looks like we have a fan club out there!! <g>

There isn't a handout as such, but the feature article in the upcoming issue of
our newsletter _Filum Aureum_ is about medieval appliqué, and the pattern page
in that issue is the pattern for the class project -- a pouch with a green
demi-sun (the populace badge of the West Kingdom), which is also available from
the Guild as a kit.

If you subscribe to _Filum Aureum_, it'll get mailed out Monday.
(Contact <sabrinadelabere@...> if you'd like to subscribe -- we ask
for a $10 donation.)

We also regularly put these feature articles and pattern pages up on the Web,
which will hopefully get done in a week or two. Look in the Filum folder in this
group's Files section.

(OT P.S. Looks like I'll be in Carolingia, visiting family, approximately
December 28-31, and possibly again in early May, if anyone in the area wants to
get together....)

I mentioned this once, but it was buried in the middle of another message --

The new fall issue of _Filum Aureum_ is sitting on my front porch even as we
speak, and will be coming with me to Crown Saturday around mid-morning. Come to
the Needleworkers Guild pavilion (big gold needle on green on the banner), pick
up the copy with your name on it and save us postage!

If you're not signed up to receive our newsletter, come pick up a blank copy
anyway. You can sign up on our clipboard to receive it in the future. (Or you
can always e-mail <sabrinadelabere@...>.)

We ask for a $10 per year donation, but if you can't afford that, we'll send it
anyway as long as you're interested. We can take checks or cash at Crown.

(Actually, come before noon and you can help collate and staple :)

Subject: Summary - October Crown - Current Service Projects & 2005
sabrinadelabere
Send Email Send Email

Completed - Kingdom Pouches - very well received, but the Royalty
whined when they were told it was regalia and not for personal
ownership.

Current Service Projects:

2004 Pennsic - Travel Bags - this project is slated for completion
June of 2004. While requested by the Royalty, it did not easily catch
on and will not become an ongoing project as originally envisioned.

Rose Pouches for our Queen - this project is a response to the wishes
of our Ladies of the Rose for a pouch.
For details see the Files section of this email list for an article
on what is expected.
We currently have:
12th Night 2003 - Sabrina de la Bere (as Queen's Lacemaker)
Beltane 2003 - Judith of Stormholde - completed
Purg 2003 - Sorcha Fhionn inhhean ui Ruiac - completed
12th Night 2004 - Catherine Lorraine - completed
Beltane 2004 - John Paul Blacklore - completed
Purg 2004 - Aelia Apollonia
12th Night 2005 - Brid Heckwiht
Beltane 2005 - Felicia Margerye Amondesham
Purg 2005 - Brianna Ni Shea

Kingdom Kneeling Carpets - currently approved by the Regalia
Commission. Mistress Anne of Bradford is drafting color charts that
hopefully will be available later this year. ETA is 18 months from
delivery of charts. Canvas will be 12 or 14 count. The medium will be
wool. Materials will be provided. Each rug will be divided into 5
pieces with the middle being a double size piece and it would do well
to have 2 stitchers work as a team on this area.
We need 12 stitchers and 2 finishers and currently have:
Eliska z Jihlava
Willow Polson
Sorcha Fhionn inhhean ui Ruiac
Isela di Bari
Brid Heckwiht
Aelia Apollonia
Iulitta Rowan
Mairghread Nigheon Eanruig
Giuliana di Benedetto Falconieri - Oertha
Felicia Margerye Amondesham

It was the consensus of the ladies present to do another round of
Rose Pouches for Pennsic 2005. Therefore, ANYONE interested in doing
a pouch should visit
http://www.goldenstag.net/MiscSCA/KingdomColors.htm. In the right is
a list of the color of the rose for each Kingdom's Queen. Then email
me with your choice of (1) Rose color and (2) Kingdom. Also give me a
2nd and 3rd choice. If you need materials please let me know and we
will provide them. As usual the rose will be approximately 6" and the
overall bag size 8" square. You can visit the article on Rose Pouches
for Our Queen in the files section for diagrams that you can print
out.

Please let me know if you have any questions or additions.

Subject: Summary of Meeting at October Crown - Apprenticeship Program
sabrinadelabere
Send Email Send Email

Initial Issues Mentioned:

The current program has 4 levels that imply a hierarchy. In reality
the program is more of a journey of exploration. Should the levels be
more reflective of this?

There have been some misconceptions with the term "Needlemaster". The
program is not designed to assist the participant to reach a true
level of master. Rather the program is broadly designed to introduce
various historical forms and assist the participant to reach a level
of competency.

(from an email) The term "Apprenticeship Program", creates some
expectations which the program does not fulfill - such as there being
a true one on one mentorship program and expectations similar to the
historic guilds program.

Additional Issues/Questions from the Discussion:

Do we want to have a formal Apprenticeship Program and all that entails?

Do we need to have levels?

Summary of Discussion:
The program should be renamed/redesigned to be reflective of a
"journey" style studies program. This keeps the program inclusive
rather than going to a true Appprenticship Program style which would
become exclusive. It may be appropriate to leave the concept of
levels totally behind and just note the completion of categories.

4 of 6 areas seem to work for program "completion". Perhaps we should
explore some special token for completing all 6 categories. We,
however, want to stay away from the "brownie badge" concept.

Since the goal is competence and exposure rather than mastery, terms
should be appropriately reflective.

One suggestion was to use the model of the novitiate with 1st level
novitiate, etc. This however, has several connotations which bothered
the non-Christian members.

Special programs like the Golden Needle, provide additional
opportunities to hone skills and should continue.

If you have completed the current or previous program or currently
hold any level, you will maintain the equivalent in the new program.
You will lose nothing although titles will change.

If anyone has additional comments please let me know. I will present
a draft for a revised program in the next few weeks.

I read with interest Sabrina's recent email regarding proposed changes to the
current Apprenticeship Program.
First, I would like to say that I agree wholeheartedly with her belief that the
program should be "inclusive" rather than "exclusive". And I love the idea
about making it a trip of self-exploration.

Then I had a brainflash. I really like the idea about the self-journey. To
tell you the truth, I would be totally in favor of scrapping the levels and just
doing categories.

Back to my brainflash.....Someone had once mentioned either on this list or from
another guild about using a passport system where as you pass each
category...your passport is stamped. So to elaborate on that idea... what if
each member created their own passport and filled it with either (1) Their own
photos of their pieces for each category as they pass them, (2) Actual samples
of their stitches used to pass each category.....kind of like a living sampler,
and/or (3) A written account of what they used to accomplish each
technique/category (type of thread, # of strands, fabric, needle size, etc.).
Not only would they "create and decorate" their own passport....but it could
serve as (1) A learning tool, (2) A reference for them when they show others
what they're learning or working on, and
(3) A "live" progress report of their very own work.

OK, that was my wierd brainflash for today....especially when I don't have a
needle in my hand.

Greetings all;

Please excuse the bandwidth.

I (in my mundane persona) am throwing a costume ball on Friday, October 24th
in Santa Clara, CA. I had medical personnel lined up to be on duty that
night, but it's suddenly fallen through. If there are any
EMT/Nurse/equivalents out there who would be willing to trade a ticket to
the ball for a night of being on duty, I'd love to hear from you.

Of course, we're hoping that nothing comes up, but we need to have someone
there to be in charge. We actually have quite a few first responders, but
would like to have someone of greater training just in case. The dance is
being held literally within blocks of a hospital, so if there is anything
major...

If anyone is interested, there is information on the dance at
www.affordabletheater.com/fft/ or you can write me here or at

the wymarc patterns work well with 28 count or 32 count - check the
booklet or website - while they should transfer to other counts the
proportions look off

silk floss - depends on what you are doing - for the wymarc stuff
Splendor from Rainbow Gallery works well. Eterna is good for surface
embroidery as is Au Ver a Soie. Needlepoint Inc is also good for the
wymarc patterns, but is higher priced

www.threadexpress.com has the best on-line pricing

Greetings and Salutations!

Usually it is polite to introduce one's self before one starts asking
questions... So, here goes...

My name is Cristeane Regan MacNab. Almost a year ago I returned to the West
Kingdom (this time around I am in Cynagua) from the Barony of Altavia in Caid.
I have also lived in Drachwald. I enjoy period cooking, sewing, rapier
fighting, obviously needlework and I am an Aries. (After a while, these start
to
read like a personal ad, don't you think?) Although, I am well versed in
needlework, I generally stick to Blackwork and Metal Thread Embroidery. The
last
5 years, I have helped to teach Metal Thread Embroidery at Costume College.
Anyway, I am bored talking about myself, I am looking forward to meeting you in
the future.

And now, on to the question... I have having the worst time finding large
quantities of silk thread (read: floss) for Blackwork at a decent prices. Does
anyone have a vendor/merchant you would like to share with me?

Okay I am going to wade in on this having made more than a dozen of the
reliquary pouches:

check your pattern that you want to use, Wymarc gives the ground fabric
count and as I recall nothing is as large as 20, and some are as small as
72 ct

Some of the patterns call for the 28 count and if your pattern is that count
then I would recommend the Splendor silk, it is 12 stranded and 4 strands
is required to get a good coverage on 28 count using brick stitch. It is a
good value for your money and is easy to handle....

Sabrina is totally correct on the count issue , you may of course, use any
count you wish for you embroidery, but the design will look off, if using
something other than the original count....

Other silks that could be used for this would be Needlepoint Silk as it
would handle well in this application. It also has the advantage of being a
permanent dye and won't bleed.

Needlepoint Silk can be obtained from Needle In a Haystack in Alameda, CA
and can be purchased online I believe it is around $2.50 per skein over
400 colors to choose from....

The fan pouch in our Needleworkers Guild kit isn't based on any
specific historical example that I know of -- though Mistress Jania
(who designed the first version) may chime in here with something I
haven't seen. She designed it a number of years ago as a Queen's
Treasure Chest project, on the theory that inexpensive wooden folding
fans are pretty easy to find at the import stores, and a fan is a
nice thing to carry around at events for most of our camping season,
so a fan and something to carry it in makes a nice little gifty-thing.

I've seen a few period pouches in this long, thin shape, but the
examples I can think of offhand are cases for one's personal
silverware or knives, and they are either canvaswork or leather, not
the kind of relatively thin embroidered cloth we generally use.

If I were documenting it for a competition, I'd say that we know
small pouches for personal items were embroidered, but that this is a
shape designed for a specific purpose as a guild kit and isn't based
on a particular period form. (Honesty being the best policy and all
that! <grin>)

BTW, ideas for new Guild kits you'd like to see are always welcome.
We've had that one around for a while; maybe it's time to find
something new for those counted-thread techniques. We're also always
in need of ideas for "guy things" since most of the Treasure Chest
items we have now are more the kind of thing ladies might like to
receive....

It's probably about time for me to post again a list of ideas for
items for the Royal Treasure Chests, and to invite comments and
suggestions.

In case anyone needs the review, the Queen and Princesses each have a
Treasure Chest, to which contributions are always welcome, of little
items that they can give as tokens or thanks to the royalty of other
kingdoms, or to people who do them some special favor (put them up
for the night, feed them, etc.). This was started by Mistress Jania
years ago, because as someone associated with the Needleworkers
Guild, she used to get these frantic phone calls to the effect of,
"Could the Guild make me sixteen embroidered needlecases by next
Tuesday?" <grin> So now we try to have things made _ahead_ of such
requests.

Items that have been popular in the past include:
Table napkins
Pincushions
Sachets
Needle cases
Bookmarks
Kitchen-size towels
Handkerchiefs
Pouches to hold a small folding fan
Pouches big enough to hold a checkbook/wallet and other personal necessities

We are always looking for more ideas for things that could be included.

Some that have been suggested or done in the past include:
Lengths of embroidered trim (need to be at least 2 yards to be useful)
Covers for small pocket notebooks
Simple glass, wood, or bone bead necklaces

I've been trying especially to think of more things we could do that
would be good gifts for guys, since so much of what we have now is
"girl stuff." <g>

Items for the gift chests don't _have_ to be based on actual medieval
items, though it's preferable if they are. They should be small
enough that they don't take too long for people to make -- lots of
small items are more useful than a few big ones. We'd love to have
more ideas for items people would like to give or receive as gifts,
since we've occasionally made something only to find that it isn't
popular enough to repeat -- for a while we were making little 3x3
pouches, for instance, only to find that they're so small that it's
hard to think of ways to use them.

So, comments?

Finished gift chest items can be brought to events, or sent to
Mistress Jania of Call Duck Manor (Queen's Gift Chest), Sabrina de la
Bere (Princess of the Mists Gift Chest) or Judith of Stormholde
(Cynagua Royal Gift Chest).

In the gifts-for-men category I submit the following:

garters/leg coverings - usually about 6' long pieces of 1-4" wide fabric of
some sort (used for tying down legs of pants)

hats - small flat hats that are easy to stuff in small places but protect
your head (these work for women as well of course)

Both of these can be embroidered, beaded, woven, etc...

What about Coifs?

Or Collars and Cuffs?

I have even done an emboirdered pouch for various men as well as a little card
case to keep their fighting cards in. This I usually I do out of a sturdier
materials...Cotton Twill or Brushed Denim with Cotton Floss or even Button
Twist.

Greetings!

Please forgive any cross-postings. I'm posting this
info for those who may be interested.

Cynagua Coronet is upon us and I’d like to announce
the Sable Swan Needle Workers Guild will be meeting
during the event. We will be gathering in the von
Schwetzingen pavilion (aka: “The Saucy Wench” in the
evenings) at 2:00 PM on Saturday. We will be
discussing future projects and class topic suggestions
as well as sharing with each other our current (or
past) projects – so don’t forget your show-n-tell
goodies!

At 3:00 PM, I will be offering a class on the chain
stitch and its variations. There is no class limit or
any fee. Please bring sharp scissors and a 3” to 6”
hoop (if desired). Fabric and thread will be
furnished.

Come out and play!

Lady Jaida al-Rakhshanda
Guild Minister

At October Crown, guild members selected to do Kingdom Rose Pouches for the 2005
guild service project. This would mean that at Pennsic 2005, Their Majesties of
each of the other 16 kingdoms would be presented a pouch with their embroidered
Royal Rose.

So far, the sign-up sheet includes:

Cristeane McNab - Caid
Iulitta Rowan of Arran - Outlands
Sorcha Fhionn inghean ui Ruaic - Atlantia
Catherine Lorraine of Stonegate Manor - An Tir

What's so much fun about this project is that each needleworker gets to select
the embroidery technique of their choice (can also be beaded and appliqued)
using the fabric, threads, and finishing techniques of their choice. The design
itself is to be approx. 6 in. x 6 in., which means the pouches usually run about
8 x 9 in. or 8 x 10 in.

If you are in need of fabric, thread, or cording for the pouch strings, please
let me know and the guild can provide that to you.

If you visit the website http://www.goldenstag.net/MiscSCA/ and click on
Kingdom/Principality Arms, Colors, etc.you will be able to see the heraldic
description and/or picture of each kingdom's royal rose.

If you would like to sign up for this fun project, please email at
dcobb@... or call me at (831) 385-3040 (hm. before 9 p.m.).

The deadline for this project will be June 1st, 2005. Please remember that as
each pouch is finished, they will be displayed at various guild events and
photographed.

Have fun!

Isela di Bari
Coordinator for the 2005 Kingdom Rose Pouches

P.S. Please remember that this is a different project from the rose pouches
being embroidered solely for Her Majesty of the West Kingdom.
