Subject: Mists Princess's Gift Chest - Calling all Artisans
sabrinadelabere
Send Email Send Email

Their Highnesses of the Mists are traveling the far corners of their
Principality and are traveling to visit their Royal Relatives in
other Principalities and Kingdoms. On these travels They wish to
present gifts from the their hands of their populace. With their
immediate travels pending a special collection box will be at this
weekend's A&S - in the sunshade next to the Needleworkers Guild
Pavilion. Thank-you in advance for your attention and assistance in
spreading the word (including other lists).

----------------- FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENT----------------------
If you have created **anything** in a period style that you are
willing to have given away by Royalty and hence that will be
appreciated by Royalty and other grateful recipients, please donate
them to the Mists Royal Gift Chest.

These items need not be large or complicated in nature. In fact,
since they will travel far and wide, small is good. Nor do these
items have to be of "Laurel" quality, but should be nicely done items
which show off your skill. Some of the nicest items I have seen were
done by beginning artisans who lovingly undertook to create a few
items in the space of an afternoon or were done as a Page School
activity.

Some items which would be appropriate are listed below, but this list
should not be taken as exhaustive:
        hand made soap
hand made candles or hand decorated candles
napkins with a smallish medieval design embroidered on them
small (4"x6") presentation bags and larger (12"x18") presentation bags
        placemats
        covered notebooks
        jewelry
        bookmarks
        pin cushions
        sachets
tools of various sorts - awl, needlecase, etc.
        handkerchief
        small boxes
        hand made beads
        hand made cords
        pouches
badges (perhaps embroidered with an item relating to the Mists)
        decorated items of leather
necklaces or bracelets of wire, beads, lace
        fibulas

Please do not donate items of food or alcohol without talking with me
first as there are certain issues to be considered including
restrictions on items and spoilage.

Please DO attach a label the item with your name and area, as Royalty
like to know to whom they should be indebted and whose work they are
admiring.

Items may be brought to any Mists Principality event for donation or
sent directly to me -- Sabrina de la Bere (Robin Berry) PO Box 1809,
El Granada, CA 94018. A collection chest will be located at the
Mists A&S pavilion at Mists Coronet. I look forward to seeing the
wonderful work of the artisans of our region as we fill the coffers
of the Mists.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
sabrinadelabere@....

In Service,

Sabrina de la Bere, Baroness

Just wanted to share the URL for a beautiful piece of embroidery - a
partlet http://embroidery.embroiderersguild.com/2002-5/muntus.htm. It
is basically a reproduction of one found in QE Unlocked. It was done
by a lady who does reinactment at historic houses in the UK for the
Historic Trust.

fibulas are a bent wire piece used like a modern safty pin - dates
back to early eras and beautified by the Romans

no question is inappropriate and learning is fun -- think about
coming to the Darkwood A&S

"Fibula" is a relatively generic name for a class of pin-type
clothing fasteners. It can cover anything from a simple straight
rod, pointed at one end and with a small knob (often decorative) at
the other (i.e. the moral equivalent of a knitting needle), to the
wide variety of "safety-pin" types of fasteners popular in Roman
empire times and later (i.e. a spring-loaded pin that is closed by
catching it in a curved loop or plate so that it can't fall out of
the fabric). The earlier style (the "knitting needle" style) is what
the leg bone "fibula" was named after (the smaller of the two bones
in your lower leg).

I will "Ah-HEM" modestly and mention that I suggested awhile back to
the owner of my local yarn store that it might be fun to do a
"magazine signing" in honor of the article I wrote that's been
published in _Piecework_ magazine in the September-October issue. ("A
Bag with Medieval Islamic Motifs to Knit", http://www.interweave.com)

It's this Friday, September 20th, at "A Time When", 4615 Manzanita
Avenue, Carmichael (northwest Sacramento), 916-481-9276. I'll be
there with my knitting to chat and to sign copies of the magazine
from 5:00 to 7:00pm. (We are not taking this event too seriously, but
we thought it would be fun :P)

This is also the shop's annual Sale Week, and they have lots of
hard-to-find embroidery threads (including Splendor silk, Danish
Flower Thread, and Merino wools) and lots and _lots_ of knitting yarn
(lace weight wool, Manos de Uruguay, popular sock yarns).

The owner (Celina Garrells) really enjoys having "history people"
come in, likes seeing people's projects, and loves natural fibers.
She will give a 10% discount to members of the West Kingdom
Needleworkers Guild or the Textile Guild at any time (just bring your
copy of the Guild newsletter and tell her before she rings things up).

Celina promises to have lots of the yarn the project calls for, too
(Lamb's Pride worsted from Brown Sheep Co.).

*          *           *          *          *          *          *          *

Directions: Take I-80 to northern Sacramento, and take the Madison
exit. (This is just past the place where Business 80 rejoins I-80.)
Turn right (if you're coming from the south; left from the north)
onto Madison (heading away from the former military base).
Follow Madison to Manzanita Avenue and turn right. (There's a
shopping center with a huge Home Depot on the far corner to the left,
if that helps.)
Follow Manzanita south to Winding Way. The shop is on the right,
just past Winding Way. The easiest way to find parking is to take the
next right _after_ Winding Way, then almost immediately right again
into the middle of the building complex. Find a place to park and
walk around to the front on Manzanita.

Me, i wash my linen in cold water and dry it in a cool drier (which
is how i treat most of my clothes). Then i iron it with a rather hot
iron.

If it were my linen, I'd wash it in HOT water on a gentle or hand wash
cycle and iron it dry before using it. The stiff fibers of linen don't
react well with tumble drying. It needs a hot iron and dampness to
remove the wrinkles.
Line drying and steam ironing work pretty well, but the best luster comes
from ironing when wet. If you have to wash it after it has been
embroidered, then you will probably want to use whatever is most suitable
for the embroidery thread.

There have been so many new sign-ups on WKNeedle, that I felt it
important to welcome you all to our list. We are delighted that you
are interested in historic needlework and hope you will join us at
events.

WKNeedle is the "voice" of the Society for Creative Anachronism
Kingdom of the West Needleworkers Guild. It is our main method for
communicating with our members. Announcements of events and resources
are posted here. We also make this list open for members to ask
questions of other members and obtain information and guidance on
projects.

This list differs from other lists in that it is not primarily a
"chat" list. We try to keep the volume of posts low as some members
only have email at work and we don't want to abuse the privilege. If
you want to join a "chat" list with a historic needlework bent may I
suggest H-Needlework <http://lists.ansteorra.org/lists.html>.

WKNeedle has files and calendars both of which are constantly in
development. In the file section
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WKneedle/files/ there are past issues
of the Guild's newsletter -- Filum Aureum, the Guild brochure, and a
class handout. Over time we hope to grow this section to encompass
other information and resources of interest to our members. The
calendar section will have listings for the next event and
auto-reminders will be sent a couple weeks prior to members.

If there are items you would like to see us add, please let us know.

The Guild also has a website which is constantly under development.
The next major changes to the website include information on kits,
more articles, and of course our ever expanding annotated booklist.
Pictures of our last project - the Rose Pouches will housed on the
website.

Meetings of the Guild are held at Crown events at approximately
2:30pm and are followed by a class. Also at Crown events the Guild
hosts a Mentor's Corner, a one-on-one opportunity to meet with more
experienced Guild members who can provide guidance on projects or
just an opportunity to stitch together. This is held from just after
Invocation until the Guild meeting. Come look for us in the Guild
Pavilion denoted by our badge (green background with a gold needle).

If you have any further questions about the Guild, the Apprenticeship
program or other items, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Subject: Workshop Class - Make a BlackworkCoif - May 18, 2003
sabrinadelabere
Send Email Send Email

I am pleased to announce and am now taking signups for our Blackwork
Coif class. Linn Skinner has graciously agreed to return and do a
wonderful hands on blackwork coif class. The date is May 18, 2003 -
Sunday and will be from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.

In the class, the participants will learn the different techniques
and stitches which were used in making a particular period coif
including free embroidery and counted thread. The plan is to do a
reproduction of a blackwork coif in the V&A which has curvilinear
tendrils, leaves, flowers, and bugs. We hope to post a picture in
the files shortly.

In advance of the class, participants will be given a tracing of the
piece, 45 count linen, muslin backing, transfer paper and pre-work
instructions. Participants will do the design transfer and fabric
mounting (on scroll or slate frame) in advance. In addition, in some
areas the original threads are missing so suggested pattern fills
will be provided. For those who wish to make the coif to fit their
head, permission and instructions will be given to enlarge the
pattern.

Class time includes one-hour lunch break/bring your bag lunch or join
in the provided deli lunch for $5.

Only open to 12 students - advance registration required.

You will need a working understanding of basic blackwork techniques.
If you have questions, contact Sabrina de la Bere
<sabrinadelabere@...>

We are fortunate to have return as our teacher Linn Skinner, who is
an embroideress and embroidery historian who teaches and exhibits in
England as well as in the United States. First taught to embroider by
her grandmothers and mother, she continued her study of classic
embroidery techniques and embroidery research in England. Linn has
studied Blackwork, Goldwork, Jacobean embroidery and Silk Shading at
the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court and advanced her skills
in workshops with master embroiderers in England and the U.S. Linn is
a founding member of The New Elizabethans, an international group of
embroiderers formed in 1998 to further the development of classic
hand embroidery. Her work was included in the New Elizabethians'
first exhibit "The Broiderer's Garden," November 1999 at the Museum
of Garden History, London and she was featured in a BBC4 Radio
program which focused on current embroidery trends and the exhibit.
Linn takes her inspiration from the 16th and 17th centuries and
interprets historic embroidery techniques and designs aesthetics in a
new and refreshing way! For more information on Linn and to see her
web-magazine visit her website: http://www.skinnersisters.com/

Cost: $100 for this special class which is greatly discounted for us.
Check must accompany your reservation for class space. Class space
will be on a first come, first served basis, but we must have a
minimum 7 attendees to have the class. Check will not be refundable
after March 15th unless the class is totally cancelled. If class is
cancelled, a materials cost may be assessed. Make checks payable to
Linn Skinner and send to our Guild Minister, Sabrina de la Bere, PO
Box 1809, El Granada, CA 94018, who is autocrating this class.

For clarification -

on another list our own Anne of Bradford offered to share some
information -The original spread sheet of information from Scheutte
about items shown in the book and their source was put together and
originally posted to the H-Needlework list by Charlene Charette, and
her name remains as the author in the properties of the sheet.. Anne
added an index for locations, and the approximate date of the piece
as well as the origin of the item.

The spread sheet identifies the item, year and the stitch shown.

In a completely separate project on trying to identify period
stitches, started from scratch, I'm working on going a couple steps
further regarding the context and including information from other
sources. And yes I'll post my spreadsheet in a few weeks.

Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track
YahooGroups users around the net & see what you are doing.
...seems these beacons work just like cookies......

Take a look at this site:

About halfway down the page, in the "Outside the Yahoo!

that lets you opt-out of their electronic snooping.
