Hello,

I thought I would pass along the title of a book I found on the "new titles"
shelf at
the library:

A Needle in the Right Hand of God: the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the
Making and
Meaning of the Bayeux Tapestry by R. Howard Bloch. Published by Random House in
2006. ISBN 1-4000-6549-6.

I thought it was interesting, because he discusses the political scene at the
time,
speculates on who, how, and why made, talks some about the supplies and method,
and
the preservation since it's making.

Greetings,

I am responding top the new book, in my years working towards degrees in
history and English literature I have used many books by R. Howard Bloch.
His writing is very informative and thoroughly researched. He is considered
a leading scholar of medieval studies in both fields that I study in and for
once my professors could not fault me a source. I look forwards to hunting
down this new book and reading it with as much enjoyment as I have his other
works.

Greetings,

As coordinator of the June 2007 Royal Rose Napkin Project, I would like to
thank the following people for their work on these 19 beautiful napkins!
They were all presented to Their Majesties at evening court at June Crown
after being displayed all afternoon at the Arts & Sciences Pavilion. What a
colorful display! And soon they will be making the long trek to Pennsic so
that Their Majesties can share your wonderful needlework with the other
Kingdoms.

Our Guild Minister Catherine Lorraine for her unwavering support of this
project, her help in collecting the napkins, and for making the presentation
possible.

Good morning everyone,

I am planning to have a viking wedding in about a year. I would like
to decorate both my garb and my husbands garb with hand embroidery.
The problem I am having is I dont know where to start to get the
information on what types of designs were typical in the early viking
age and what type of stitches. I did see Catherine Lorraine's posting
about a viking embroidery class at A&S but unfortunately I can not
make that event due to a prior engagement. Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

Thank you,

Greetings to the list from Catherine Lorraine,

These are the classes being offered by the Guild at the upcoming West
Kingdom Arts and Sciences on Sat. July 28th......

We have asked Autocrat and the Arts Officer that the classes be scheduled
in the following order in the Guild pavilion..........

Saturday
1st period class: Whitework taught by Ascelin Meere of Ravenslock and
Caiterina nic Sheamus
Max students 8, Class Fee $5.00 level intermediate bring scissors and
magnification

How was whitework used in period, especially on garb? The portraits can
tell
you, but you have to know where to look. Start a project suitable to make a
collar or cuffs in a whitework technique, and see where these techniques
show
up in period paintings.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
---------------------
Saturday Second period:

Learning Embroidery Basics 101 taught by Isela di Bari no limit, no
class fee , beginner level. Bring notebook, pen magnification and chair.

How do you "de-strand" a thread? How many strands are too many? How do you
start and end a silk/metal/wool thread properly? What's a "technique" vs. a
"style"? What is a "primary" vs. "secondary" resource? What's a "dye-lot?
Bleeding? Eterna? When do you use a blunt vs. sharp needle?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
---------------------------------

Saturday third period:

Decorative Viking Stitches. taught by Catherine Lorraine max students 6,
class fee $6.00. All materials supplied. Bring sharp scissors.
Hands on class, learn a number of stitches used to decorate clothes.

Possibilities of stitches  we will explore will be  Running;  Herringbone;
Double Herringbone; Tied Herringbone; Buttonhole; Van Dyke; German
Interlacing; whip stitch; stem stitch ; chain stitch time permitting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
--------------------------------
Saturday 4th period
Trapunto taught by Aurelia de Montfort max students 8 class fee $5,
level intermediate. Auditors ok.. Bring , pencil, scissors.. Students that
do not wish to buy the kit may bring two 12
inch pieces of either silk or linen with a rather low thread count weave
(email the instructor for further information), a small quilting needle, a
6 inch
upholstery needle or a stiletto, scissors and cotton batting or cord.

Trapunto is an early form of quilting that was popularized in the 14th
century. The whole cloth quilts are worked without a batting through the
entire
quilt, and only selective areas are stuffed and raised. The beauty of these
quilts comes from the play of light and shadow in the design. This class
will
have a historical overview of trapunto, discussion of close relatives of
this
technique, pictures of extant examples and a hands on class with a small
trapunto project.

Greetings to the list,

As some of you know, in June 2006 I was elevated to Pelican. For that
occasion a very large group of people, spear headed by Kaaren,
presented me with 3 pieces of new clothes to wear.

The coat, overdress and under-dress have embroidery, tablet weaving,
couching etc every where.

I have uploaded a few pictures that absolutely do not do justice to
the quality of the clothes or to the embroidery, nor do they include
everyone that spent time making these items for me.

Please have a look at the pictures, and if you see me at an event
wearing said clothes, please feel free to ask questions. I am more
than happy to bend your ear and expound on all of the wonderful work,
time and effort that everyone spend on my behalf.

Hi all,

I am gearing up to work with a friendly neighborhood costumer to make the
Helena Snakenborg dress, with the impetus being the faboo embroidery on the
sleeves and partlet. I have a pattern for the repeating motif ready to go - but
I'm curious as to what others who may have attempted this design have come up
with. I've found a number of people via Google who have done this project. Sadly
no pictures go along with their brief mentions.

#1220 From: "Violin Goddess" <violingoddess@...>
Date: Sun Aug 5, 2007 6:40 am
Subject: Vintage Chinese Robe Restoration
violingoddesss
Send Email Send Email

Hello all,
I and my boyfriend (who is chinese, and has a chinese persona) found
a vintage chinese robe in a local antique shop for $50. I insisted
he buy it and I told him I would restore it for him. I emphasized
the fact (as far as I know it to be true) that traditional chinese
metal(laic)-thread embroidery....couching style is, to my knowlege,
not an embroidery technique that we can have been able to reproduce
by machine yet. Meaning that ALL of the intricate metal thread
embroidery covering the front, back, and sleeves of the robe was all
done by hand(s).

My problem is how to find information on how to repair and restore
this robe. My assesment of the robe is that is is no more than 100
years old, but was likely made IN chine. However, in it's lifetime,
it has been ripped, worn, badly repaired, and some of the dye has
bled through to other parts of the robe making very obvious stains.
The robe is (for some unkown reason) lined with cotton muslin. ANd
the two tie closures are mismatched and not original. One made from
cotton, another amde from some sort of polyester fabric. Both
haphaserdly sewn to the robe.

Anyway, I can replace the lining with silk, and couching is easy.
Although, I WILL have to find a seller who sells the exact thickness
and type of metal thread that is used on the robe. (it appears to
be cotton or silk thread twised and wrapped with metal fillament of
some kind) I apologize for my obvious ignorance about metal-thread
embroidery. But that is not a field of Needlework that I have under
my belt as of yet. My biggest worry (and also the aspect of the
restoration that I know the least about) is the dye stains. The
main color of the robe is red. But it has on the back of the robe
two (what I call) "banners" that are attached to the back of the
neck by an cord and drape diaponally down either side of the back
until the meet the sides of the robe below the lowest closure where
the are sew to the front part of the robe itself. THe "banners" are
blue colored with four or five chinese symbols embroidered (satin
stitch) along the length of them. The blue dye has bled not only
throughout the "banners", but also onto parts of the red robe (both
front and back). This is something I have no idea as to how to
approach, much less fix.

Please, any adive, links, resouces, or even books that anyone could
suggest would be greatly appreciated.

The Japanese Embroidery Center carries a variety of metal threads in
their store at http://www.jecstore.bigstep.com/ and you can get a

Greetings to the list,

As some of you know this year at June Crown, the Guild recognized
three of its members for outstanding and continued service to the Guild .

A banner was made and their arms stitched and appliqued to the banner.

An illuminated book is also in the process of being painted so that
there is a permanent record of the history of the Guild as well as a
hard copy record of the names of the recipients of service recognition
as well as those individuals that complete the Broderer Program.

There is also a second banner that will bear the arms of those that
have completed the Broderer program.

The Guilds Illuminated book, will be a continuing project. I have
uploaded pictures of how the book currently looks. Maria del Norte
was kind enough to do all of the calligraphy that is currently in place.

If you have access to the Celtic Embroidery books by Robert
Coldcastle and Gerald of Ipsley, they have a drawing of a Pelican. It
is one of their designs (I believe Bob did the art), adapted from
period art for SCA use.

It is difficult to find early depictions of a Pelican. I was looking
a few years ago and the best I did was 14th c. (though it wasn't a
very thorough search, mainly Google images).

I don't remember if the Celtic Pelican is in Vol I or II of the
Celtic Embroidery books as I am at work and the books are at home.
You can find a citation for the books on the West Kingdom Embroidery
Bibliography. (a great resource!)

Greetings -

Im getting ready to work on a piece for my daughter's garb and it
occurs to me that my plans may be in conflict with SCA heraldry. I
would like to do green leaves on a brown background for trim. It
occurs that this might conflict with Laurels but Im not sure. Would it
make a difference if I were to do green leaves on a white background?
or is that close enough to conflict with the belts of Knights?

Thanks for the help -

Megs -
