We lost our website. Our provider pulled the plug on all free sites.
Our new site and URL will be announced in a couple weeks so hold
tight while we make the transition. Once we have it up, we will post
the URL to the list. Thank-you.

How does one obtain back issues of the newsletter? I am interested
in the issues containing # 1 and #6 in the series of Period
Stitches. I was able to get copies of #2 thru #5 from three
different locations on the web (this list's file section included).
Are #1 and #6 in PDF or some other format somewhere on the web, too?
I'm located up in Washington state, so I can't pick these up at
a "local" event. I'm more than willing to pay for copies if any are
available or re-emburse copy/mailing fees if anyone would be so kind
as to make me a zerox copy of these two issues.

Greetings:

The West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild web site has moved to a new home.

http://bayrose.org/wkneedle

There's NEW information on upcoming meetings, classes, AND the
beginning of an exciting new project.

I am in the process of fine tuning the pages, so there may be a few
minor problems (such as an odd character or a missing graphic here or
there), but all the pages are up and ready for your visit.

Thanks for your interest and support.

SabrinadelaBere@...

At the suggestion of their prior Majesties, the Guild is proposing
another service project for embroiderers in the Kingdom of the
West. The guild is looking for needleworkers to embroider each
Kingdom's heraldic arms which will then be appliqued onto canvas
carry-all bags to be used by Their Majesties to carry gifts for each
Kingdom.

This will be an ongoing project. We would like to have one for each
Kingdom for Pennsic, and multiples of Kingdoms that we encounter
often at wars - such as Estrella and Great Western War. This will be
an ambitious project, but it will serve the needs of the Kingdom and
be well received by the royalty.

Now is the time to select the Kingdom of your choice! You can see each
Kingdom's arms in color with each blazon at
http://www.goldenstag.net/MiscSCA/index.htm

You can also go to http://www.inlandregion.org/heraldry/kingdoms.html to
see black & white drawings of the Arms of the Kingdoms of the Knowne World.

The embroidery design will be 6 in. x 6 in. Each needleworker can choose
their own embroidery technique, fabric, and thread. The Guild will supply
the bagges for each needleworker to complete the applique. For
additional information, please contact Guild Patron Isela di Bari at
dcobb@... who is coordinating this project, or Guild
Minister Sabrina de la Bere at SabrinadelaBere@....

Greetings, western needlers!

I found out yesterday that our beloved Guild Minister, Sabrina de la
Bere, won't be able to come to Crown this weekend. So as her deputy,
I will be trying valiantly to fill her shoes. We will have our 2:30
meeting and class at the "BC" -- the blue and white pavilion that
belongs to Flieg and Eilis. Look for our banner! I will also be
available as a sort of one-woman "Mentor's Corner" -- I'll try to set
myself up somewhere conspicuous from Invocation to class time,
probably close to the BC. Otherwise I'm planning to camp with
Crosston -- look for a big black and yellow striped sunshade.

In haste,

e-mailed Noel and Helen Toone. They said that they would have kits available,

hoping to be able to buy a kit that would have all the kinds of materials in it

A Message from Your Kingdom A&S Officers

The A&S display at 12th Night this year is a themed display: Camping
at 12th Night

Are we seriously proposing you whip out your bedroll and make
yourself comfy? Um, No.

What we are hoping is that you'll consider bringing and displaying
some of the wonderful artifacts you've made to beautify and enhance
the period atmosphere of your encampment, but that few people except
those lucky enough to visit you at your "home away from home" ever
get to see. We'd like everybody to take a peak inside your camp,
without imposing on your hospitality.

We'd like to see benches, tables, lighting solutions, textiles (for
example, bedspreads and tablecloths), cookware, and all the other
little odds and ends you've made to feather your nest.

To make sure we'll have enough space - if you are planning to bring a
*large* item, like a bed, please contact one of us in advance.

Thanks!

Cyneswith & Susan

PS: In addition to the A&S themed display, several of the Kingdom
Guilds are also planning displays. Please contact them for additional
information about those displays.

   From: "Herr Malachias" <capt_malachias@...>
Subject: Cynaguan Arts and Sciences

Greetings!

Her Excellency Mari, Lady of the Swan, bid me address you on the subject of
future happenings in the diverse Arts and Sciences of the great Principality
of Cynagua. Lady Beatrix zum Dunklenturm, our new Minister of Arts
(woohoo!) and I are working with Their Excellencies and the populace of
Cynagua to bring new and wondrous things to Cynaguan events.

We encourage all of you with projects, finished or unfinished, amateur or
no, to bring them to events for display. Winter Investiture is an
especially good time to bring things like scrolls, painting, and other items
too delicate for the camping environment. We shall arrange for display
space, and will also solicit commentary if you so desire.

We would like to also see displays and classes put on by the various guilds.
I have seen the works of many talented woodworkers, moneyers,
needleworkers, calligraphers, and the like; we would all very much like to
see that talent shared with the populace! If you have a really beautiful
scroll, bring it! If you want to hold a scriptorium, workshop, or
roundtable discussion, please contact me (Malachias) at
capt_malachias@... or Beatrix at beazumd@... (you may also
call me at 916-247-7597). Teaching is *not* just for Collegia or A&S
Tourneys!

So far, we have two competitions and a themed display organized for Winter
Investiture. The Arts competition will be Embroidery, and the Sciences
competition will be Herbal Remedies; if you need any help with
documentation, ideas, or the like, contact the A&S Ministers (that is what
we are here for). There will be an Open Brewing display, run by Katla in
Mikla, with lots of samples. Brewers, bring your samples as well! We are
hoping to have a class or two scheduled by then as well; teachers, please
contact me or the Arts Minister.

The Lady of the Swan issued a powerful challenge to the fighters of Cynagua
and those who would stand with her; She now issues the same challenge to its
artisans and craftspeople. Are you up for it?

Herr Malachias von Morgenstern, Cynaguan Minister of Sciences

Greetings!

In my haste, I utterly neglected a huge portion of the Arts: the Performing
Arts! I thank His Excellency Gaius for bringing this to my attention.

We would also like to see more dance, oratory, acting, music, and the like!
Indoor events are ideal for dancing; no mud, no uneven ground, and there
will be a place to plug in music.

Classes in such are welcome, as well as displays of talent. Do you have a
short play or monologue you have been working on? Poetry? A musical piece?
An instrument more suited for indoor play?

What say you?

There are lots of small embroidery projects which can be made
transportable. For example, many of the drawings from Schole House
for the Needle can be drawn on linen and embroidered. Put a couple
on a small piece for a needlecase or sachet, such as the ones offered
as kits from the Guild.

Another idea is to take a simple zoomorphic design from one of the
celtic free design books. Transfer the design to a strip of cloth
suitable as use as trim. By putting the strip on a small scroll
frame (eg one of the 6" wide ones), you can carry your trim piece
with you. You could also do a free hand scroll work design.

Voided work, like Assisi, is also something to explore. Since it
frequently was used on linens, there are a number of patterns which
also would work on a small scroll frame.

Welcome Llyn - scroll frames are easily available from your local
JoAnns or Michaels. If you would prefer to order on line you have our
choice of a number of different styles and sources (including JoAnns
on line). If you are looking for something a bit more historical in
look, choose one of the scroll frames with knobs rather than wingnuts.

Good luck in your sewing.

I have decided that because all of you have been so very supportive

Christmas, anyone who wishes to purchase a
kit or chart as a gift for someone will be given the option of having
that kit or chart sent directly
to the recipient, gift wrapped beautifully with a card naming the

just make sure when you order, to include under the special

Grettings unto my fellow guilds people. My name is Lord Peter the Cynic. Many of
the populace know of me from my ungodly amounts of hours on front gate and
constabulary duty.I joined this list about 5-6 months ago and have been meaning
to introduce myself.. Besisdes being a duly rostered constable I love to cross
stitch.Right now it is the only form of needle work I know how to do..My wife
taught me for an SCA household(Noe Defunct) project and I got hooked.I am always
willing to teach classes on it and do have some celtic and perioid patterns in
my collection..I plan on being at more events next year and can always be found
at or near the front gate.Or in House of the Roaring Hearth.Brenna and Raven's
camp. That's all for now, peacew and love to all.
In service and craftmanship,
Ld.Peter the Cynic!!!!!

The Lady of the Swan (Mari) has requested from the Cynaguan Sable
Swan Needleworker's Guild to come together and enrich the
Principality of Cynagua. Also, any donations to help during her reign
would be very much appreciated. Please contact Judith of Stormholde

There have been so many new sign-ups on WKNeedle, that I felt it
important to welcome you all to our list. We are delighted that you
are interested in historic needlework and hope you will join us at
events.

WKNeedle is the "voice" of the Society for Creative Anachronism
Kingdom of the West Needleworkers Guild. It is our main method for
communicating with our members. Announcements of events and resources
are posted here. We also make this list open for members to ask
questions of other members and obtain information and guidance on
projects.

This list differs from other lists in that it is NOT primarily a
"chat" list. We try to keep the volume of posts low as some members
only have email at work and we don't want to abuse the privilege. If
you want to join a "chat" list with a historic needlework bent may I
suggest H-Needlework.

In addition, NO commercial offers of goods or services may be made
via this list.

WKNeedle has files and calendars both of which are constantly in
development. In the file section
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WKneedle/files/ there are past issues
of the Guild's newsletter -- Filum Aureum, the Guild brochure, and a
class handout. Over time we hope to grow this section to encompass
other information and resources of interest to our members. The
calendar section will have listings for the next event and
auto-reminders will be sent a couple weeks prior to members. If there
are items you would like to see us add, please let us know.

The Guild also has a website which is constantly under development.
The next major changes to the website include a link to WKNeedle,
links to stitch how-to sites, and an expanded annotated booklist.
Pictures of our current project - the Rose Pouches is housed on the
website and in WKNeedle photo files.

Meetings of the Guild are held at Crown events at approximately
2:30pm and are followed by a class. Also at Crown events the Guild
hosts a Mentor's Corner, a one-on-one opportunity to meet with more
experienced Guild members who can provide guidance on projects or
just an opportunity to stitch together. This is held from just after
Invocation until the Guild meeting. Come look for us in the Guild
Pavilion denoted by our badge (green background with a gold needle).

If you have any further questions about the Guild, the Apprenticeship
program or other items, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Subject: Artisan Display Opportunity - Laurel Prize Tourny

Come help me get the word out!

There will be a wonderful opportunity for all artisans who are not
Laurels to display their work at 12th Night. This is a separate
display from the regular A&S display and will be held later in the
day in the main Court and Display Room.

For any artisan who wants to get feedback or just show off this is
the place. This is not a competition and there are no formal prizes.
The name of the event is a misnomer.

The event is open to artisans of all levels of ability and all types
of work. There is a limited amount of display area, so plan on
bringing 1-3 items to display. We are encouraging the artist to
remain with their work for the 2 hour event, but it is not required.
Feedback sheets will be available for Laurels to provide such.

While the display is open to anyone to walk by, the objective is to
have artisans work noticed and in particular to have their work
noticed by Laurels. Some Laurels may offer tokens of acknowledgement
to the artisans.

Documentation is encouraged, but not required. However, it is useful
for each work to be identified with the following information -
	 artisan name (SCA)
	 materials used
source of inspiration (era, country, specific item, etc.)
	 description of item on display

It would be nice if any artisan planning to display would let me
know. I want to ensure that there is adequate space and that Laurels
of all fields to be represented are encouraged to participate.

Thank-you for your assistance in getting the word out. Feel free to
post this information to your members via email lists, newsletters,
or other publications.

For further details please check our website
http://www.bayrose.org/Laurel on what to expect as an artisan
participant and as a Laurel viewer. For question, please contact the
autocrat for the Prize Tournament -- Sabrina de la Bere (email:
SabrinadelaBere@..., phone 650/712-8405).
