First found in Scotland, where ROBERT DE WARDEROP witnessed a charter by Countess Margaret of Buchan in favour of the Abbey of Arbroath in 1210.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: MICHAEL WARDROPE, born in Scotland 1640 and settled in Virginia in 1685; JOSEPH WARDROPE, who immigrated to Georgia in 1734 with his wife and daughter; and JAMES WARDROPE born 1725, and died 1790 in Wake Co., N.C. He sold supplies to the Patriots during the Rev. War.

YOUNGER WALDROPE SR. {son of JAMES WARDROPE} went from N.C. to KY in 1810. There a teacher taught his children to spell thier name "Wardrip", and every Wardrip in this country is descended from him.
