Hello all,
Jim Curry posted a great idea, that we have Suggested Arrival and Departure Procedures. I already know of 4-5 airplanes going in and there will possibly be a few that have not spoken up, so here are some ideas I think we should follow to make this a safe day. Monitor 122.9
Announce your position frequently as coverage on the water is spotty. I'll try to have the handheld or aircraft radio on. I may also have an FRS to coordinate with the hikers. We may have a boat available to transport "stuff" to the beach for loading, but chances are we may have to pick up from several places around the lake. Please keep the center of the lake clear for arrivals should someone arrive unannounced.
Arrivals
Some pilots have made a straight-in approach landing East. This is NOT a good idea and we suggest (BEG)that it not be done on Saturday.
What we would like to see is what I'll call the South Rim Approach. By paralleling the south rim from west to east you have a good view of the lake and any traffic. It also will allow you the opportunity to view any wind and give you an exit strategy if you should need it. The east end of the canyon when you are slowed down will provide plenty of turning area for your 180 degree descending turn to final. You can start your decent abeam mid lake if all looks well.
Please consider that a departing aircraft may not have seen you that high, and if you are not talking to him please give him the right of way.
Departures
Use all of the lake for take off to the WEST and stay to the north side climbing at best angle. The spillway is a narrow opening and if you need to return to the lake you will need the altitude for the turn back. This also gives you the greatest opportunity for altitude over the spillway should you need the gliding distance...... This West Right Side Departure will also give room for aircraft entering the canyon.
Warning
This is not a great day for you to TRY Lake Isabel if you have not been there before. It's always suggested to go up there the first time with someone that has "been there-done that!" It's best to have an experience person along, or a well briefed plan can work by following someone in. Plan ahead.
We look forward to a successful and SAFE day. Thank you everyone for your support.
