Hi Bill -- so I have been thinking about the German surname issue -- I found a
ship manifest of a man named Brazgel who I think is one of my relatives -- my
mom's dad's mom was going to stay with her aunt "Brazgil" according to her ship
manifest -- I am starting to wonder if it wasn't a German surname -- she was
from Vartele/Varteliai -- we actually went there last summer, swam in the lake,
saw the itsy bitsy village, etc. . . -- I am wondering if she was a Lithuanian
Prussian or something of the like -- due to the name and the location of her
village. In googling the name "Brazgel" I have found some indication that it's a
German name. I'd love to hear any thoughts of anyone in the group. Thanks! Amy

I have forgotten how to do it with Windows, but on a Mac you drag the photos
with your mouse to your desktop and you can write a disc from there. If you are
not sure or able, I could download them for you and send them to you by email.

I trust you have also seen Howard Sandys' great site at
http://howard.sandys.ca/01.html

Right click on the photo with your mouse. Click on "save as" and save the photo either directly to the disc, which should be in your D drive, or save it to your photo editor for editing prior to transferring to the disc. If you have Paint Shop Pro or a program like that, you can edit it before you save it to the disc.

let me know if you need any help!

Thanks everyone.  I got the pictures saved in my Picasa3.  Also thanks for the website for Howard Sandys photos.  They are awsome.  I noticed in his site information about (Kaliningrad Oblast).  That is a location my fathers family lived before living in Paristytis, Lithuania, where my father was born.

Keep in touch.  I love your messages.

You’re in luck.  The LDS church has the Evangelical Lutheran Church for Vistytis from about 1850 to 1940.

No, they aren't. Archive in Warsaw has only 2 documents about credits for owners
of facilities in Vistytis (Wisztyniec). So if register / metrical books are not
in Polish archives, neither in Lithuanian ones, seems they are completely
lost...
From above documents you can learn names of habitants: Karol Miculewicz, owner
of salt's warehouse and Jankiel Zan, Wizanska str 24 (year 1844).

I am trying to find information in regards to my grandfather who immigrated from
Vistytis to America sometime around 1885 - 1887. He came over by himself and
his last name was SCHUKOVSKY, Scherkovsky, Shacufsky or schacofsky. It is
spelled something like this. Those 4 spellings I got from his sister's marriage
license, and death certificate.
He went to live with his older sister (name unknown) in Kalamazoo, MI during the
above dates, but I cannot find any census information for 1890 for him.

His mother's name was Esther and I do not know his father's name. His father
died sometime between 1876 - 1880 in a war in Poland. My grandfather's first
name was Harry. How would I go about trying to locate birth records for this
town for the year 1877? His mother was an Orthodox Jew and he attended
Synagogue while living in Poland.

Any help would be much appreciated. I saw your group on Google, but I cannot
figure out how to join.

Sincerely

Ilene Harris

Ilene:
There is not a complete U.S. census for 1890. That census burned in a fire in St. Louis.
Have you been able to locate him in the 1900 census?

Hi

I tried 3 times before with No response.

I am looking for information on my family. My great Great Grandfather moved to Vistytis from a family estate named filllipa now in poland. His son was born  in Vistytis with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He married  a lady Anna who was a only child who owned 80 hectords in Pa Vistytis. The family was a titled family who's name is Zlatarinskas. I have been there 3 times and talked to the government and the local priest. They both tell me that either the records wear destroyed during the war or taken by the Russians. But It appears  from reading here that others are able to find information on their family.

The Catholic records for Vistytis are not available.  However, if your family was of the Lutheran faith, then those records are available on microfilm through the LDS family history center.
