What today is known as Vistytis is situated in the southwest of Lithuania near the Polish and Russian borders on Lake Vistytis in the municipality of Vilkaviskis and the county of Marijampole. Latitude: 54ş27' north, longitude: 22ş43' east.



This group has been set up with the purpose of collecting and sharing information concerning Vistytis and all those individuals and families who have their origins there or for those who have an interest in the town.

Any discussion about Vistytis is welcome, preferably in English, about visiting or living there, its history or the genealogy of those who were born or lived there.



Before WWI Vistytis was in the powiat (district) of Wolkowyszk in the gubernia (province) of Suwalk in the Russian Empire. In Russian it was known as Wysztynce, in Polish it was known as Wysztyniec and by the Prussians as Wystiten. In Yiddish (the language of the Jewish people in Eastern Europe) it was known as Vishtinetz. It is known as Vištytis in Lithuanian and as Vistytis in English.
