Description
Starting in 2004 years we have done educational outreach and registered over 38,000 Virginia Voters. Remember that Senator Jim Webb was elected by only a 9,000 vote margin and as a result the Democrats took over the US Senate. We provided critical work that led to the change of the balance of power in the US Senate! From 2004 through 2008 we worked alongside many other voter registration volunteers and collectively we increased the number of Virginia voters by 504,000. In fact Barack Obama received 503,000 more votes in Virginia than John Kerry did four years earlier and this margin comes from new registrations.
We have developed a set of values and convictions that unite us. Following is the preamble to the values and convictions statement.
"We members of Family America face a challenge in today’s political turmoil. We have before us the opportunity to redirect the course of our history for the common good, as our founders did before us when confronted with divisive governance. Facing threats to that which we cherish, we have a responsibility to re-establish the values that reflect our sense of commitment and responsibility to ourselves, to our families, and to our larger communities.
We see lack of civil discourse and mutual respect, grievous inequities among us, and, for many, a pervasive and debilitating sense of fear. We sense a loss of faith in the ideals that have long defined Family America. Our complex and challenging world demands redirection to ensure protection, fairness and freedom for all.
We recommit to the inalienable rights promised since the birth of our nation. To guide us in this commitment, we pledge to ask simple but powerful questions that every new generation and new era must ask of itself."
Our activities include continuing voter education, book clubs, voter registration and voter mobilization. We operate on a non-partisan basis, but back progressive politics. New members are welcome.
