Sometimes it almost gets away from you!

Bicycle restorer, Paul Farren. "I see an old piece of rust through different eyes to most people."

To all my friends in the Vintage Cycle Club I hope you had a good year.
The club had some great moments this year with the Australian Cycle History conference being the highlight from my point of view. Situated in the wonderful City Museum which is now slated for closing( thanks Mr Holding). The tour in the week prior from Castlemaine to Melbourne was as thrilling as ever stopping in Maldon for the Easter Parade, Talbot, and Daylesford. At times quite hilly and energetic but accident and incident free. How about the workshop at the Farren bike shed with frame painting and rim rolling and frame building workshops. The Swap meets have continued to work thanks to Abbotsford and have been a great contributor to the Club insurance fund.
Possibilities for next year are Penny farthing learning sessions(for beginners), The Moomba parade, a saddle making workshop at my place . All of these need dates setting so you will be notified.
I went to the International Veteran Cycle Association Rally in Neuchatel in Switzerland and later in the year to the International Cycle History Conference in Freehold New Jersey. It goes without saying that there was lots of bike riding in between.

Happy riding
Paul Farren

and Charlie too!

I got my last pair from Ray Thompson at Burwood Bicycles 275 Burwood
Highway, Burwood in the Bennetswood shopping precinct.98888776.
They were Deli brand, made in Indonesia. They have a nice black tread with
gumwall sides.

Many of you will have had the pleasure of attending this year's Cycle History Conference held at the City Museum, Melbourne.  Well our esteemed Minister for Tourism, finance and Major Events, Tim Holding  has decided to close it.  (see clipping from the Age Sat Dec 12th.)  For me it is a special place steeped in history and a valuable asset for Melbourne.  I will write/email to the Minister to protest and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

Below is a letter Graham Bradshaw wrote to the Age

Dear Sir,
The announcement by Tim Holding, Minister for Tourism, that a
significant historic building housing a Museum about the City of
Melbourne is to be closed and turned over to wedding functions shows a
total lack of understanding of tourism and the use of attractions such
as the Old Treasury Building.
This building has been instrumental in the development of this state,
and played a part in the discussions surrounding the Federation of
Australia. Gold from Victoria's gold rush was stored there, Victoria's
Governor, the Premier and the Treasurer all had their offices in this
building. It was in use until the late seventies as government offices.
Today it is used for a wide variety of meetings and conferences, and the
displays and exhibitions that are mounted with the sometimes limited
resources at hand are educational and impressive.
To waste this valuable resource by turning it over to the frippery of
weddings borders on the negligent, it is certainly disrespectful of the
history of this state and the people who made it.

Hello Simon.

We specialise in the odd and unusual bicycle parts and tyres, and although 26 x 1 1/4 is unusual it is not that old, and we still have good stocks of
Cheng-Shin gum wall C83 tread tyres.

Regards Keith.

I thought that members of the group  may be interested in seeing the military bikes I brought back from Germany a few years ago ,both are rideable.
The  one  with all the military paraphanelia on it is a 1943 Durkopp  made in   Bielefeld not far from berlin.
The other is a 1950 Swiss army bike made in Switzerland  that is built like a tank and in the precision of a swiss watch.

Does anyone else in the group collect old military bicycles

I do ride them occasionally in melbourne..

Regards Mark.

Hi Marshall,

Sad that Austrtalia post are not interested in their heritage...I guess it is now an off shore owned company.

A few of us have talked of a vintage ride on the Warburton trail for early next year so will keep you posted.

The Electra may be a Paul question...I know of a late 1890's Melbourne company by that name and a very recent U.S (made in Asia) also called Electra...

Cheers,
Ian

I got zero help from Australia post. But Paul was a lot of help.

Is there a ride coming up where I can take it for a spin?

I just bought a Electra 28 made by Adler from Annemarie Driver in Canberra. Do you know where I can get some info on it so I can restore it?

Dear All,
A number of people have bought bikes from Canberra and are worrying about how to get them back. Why don't the Victorian members get together and arrange a group method of bringing them back depending on how much stuff you purchased. You could organize it through this site.

REVOLUTION TICKETS ON SALE NOW

On Wednesday 16 December the 112th edition of the Urban
St Kilda Austral Wheelrace
will be the feature event ofRevolution 5 when dual Olympic gold medallist Graeme Brownwill come up against defending champion Shane Perkins plus Garmin-Slipstream’s Cameron Meyer and under 23 time trial world champion Jack Bobridge.

It’s a big step moving the Austral from March to December but it will allow our best track cyclists to do battle in Australia’s most significant handicap.

But it won’t just be the Australians trying to add their name to the historic honour roll.

Following their impressive Track World Cup performance a strong Kiwi contingent will be on the start line looking to relegate the local favourites, like Glenn O’Shea, to the minor placings.

Plus there’ll be the ever aggressive Malaysians and anAmerican team among those to watch in the race that was first run on the MCG in 1887.

Brown has caused mayhem at the past two pre-Christmas Revolution meets and the same is expected again this year as he tries to hold off the up and coming stars of Australian cycling.

Plus Anna Meares, who recently won three gold medals at the Track World Cup, will be in action.

MEARES LEADS AUSTRALIA TO TOP OF THE WORLD CUP STANDINGS

Anna Meares took three gold medals at the second round of the UCI Track World Cup in Melbourne to lead the Australian team to the top of the medal standings.

The home team won the round with five gold, one silver and two bronze medals ahead of New Zealand who claimed four gold, one silver and a bronze.

See The Worlds Best Burn Up The Boards

Australia's Team Jayco slotted into third place with three gold and one silver medal.

One of the most significant results of the three days of racing was Australia’s win over Great Britain in the 4000m team pursuit with a team that had 21-year-old Cameron Meyer as the elder statesman.

And despite claiming the bronze medal the team from New Zealand took plenty of hope out of the team pursuit as their time in the final was almost on par with the Australians.

While the win by Shane Perkins in the sprint confirmed his status as Australia’s leading sprinter and puts him among the men to watch at the World Championships in Copenhagen next year.

From across the pond the Kiwis provided many of the highlights with an impressive win by 19-year-old Thomas Scullyin the scratch race that was backed up by a win in the madison when he teamed up with Marc Ryan.

New Zealand also claimed gold in the women’s team pursuit ahead of Great Britain and the men’s individual pursuit when Jesse Sergent got the better of Australia’s Rohan Dennis.

At the end of two of the four round World Cup series Australia is sitting on top of the standings with 210 points ahead of Great Britain on 199 points and Germany on 189 points.

Hi Fiona
According to Wikipedia:
The Austral Wheel Race is the oldest track bicycle race in the world
still existing, stretching back to 1887. The Austral race is
Australia’s greatest track cycling event. It is held in Melbourne,
riders assigned handicaps according to ability over a series of heats.
The finals are run over 2000m.[1]
The races in 2004 and 2005 were at Vodafone Arena in February. The
first race in 1887 held at Melbourne Cricket Ground over 3 miles
(4800m), with first prize of a grand piano valued at 200 pounds. Other
venues in Melbourne to host the race include the Exhibition Track, the
North Essendon board track, the Olympic Park Velodrome and the
Brunswick, Coburg and Northcote velodromes.

The Melbourne Cup on Wheels was held on Saturday 29th November this
year, at the same venue. The first handicap race for the season.
(Cyclesport Victoria website <http://www.vic.cycling.org.au>)
Not sure of its origins, but I suspect that it is quite recent.
Someone else may correct me on that.

regards
John

Hi

Does anyone know anything about R L Stevens who raced in Melbourne in the late 1930s.

Also, what was the ‘Melbourne Cup on Wheels’? Was this a diminished continuation of the Austral Wheel Race of the 1890s?

Thanks

Fiona

What a great night ; the World Track Cycling Championships at
Melbourne's wonderful Hisense Arena. A night of amazing and brilliant
athleticism - an arena of wonder, glaring spotlights, and the
drumming wheels of daredevil speeding bikes on the 42 degree banked
boards. The eruption of voice from cheering, whistling, screaming fans.
Then it was our turn to actually get a part in this compelling
scene. Creaking and costumed on our Hobbies, Pennies and Pedersons we
provided the intermission entertainment... and did the crowd love
it?--YES--YES.
On an enormous high, Charlie then stoked our buzzing adrenalin
with shots of champers from her silver ice bucket centre track as
the whirlwind of wheels continued around us.
Outside the rain fell.

Thankyou to Paul and Charlie for the opportunity of bringing
bicycle history to so many cycling enthusiasts at such a venue.
One truly memorable night.

Dear All,
Annemarie Driver from the Canberra Tradies Bike Museum is clearing the
remaining bikes that I believe were set aside to remain in Canberra as
a special collection. Please note these are some of the cream of the
crop. If you are interested in any bikes then I am happy to give
comments on the particular machines. It will be a long time before you
have the choice of so many machines to choose from. Her are some of my
recommendations.
Boneshaker -136 this bike is amazing condition with beautiful wooden
wheels in ridable condition.
Star -400 when are you going to see an American Star for sale in
Australia
Humber ladies - 342 this is the bike Annemarie used to ride in parades
so we know it is ridable and in great restored condition. Beautiful
plunger brake and lever.
Speedwell -70 I cannot remember this one but looking at the geometry
with its australian provenance and plunger brake make this a treat.
Napoleon. -288 I remember this being restored by Rex Irvine. A really
beautiful bike. American made with superb frame design
Schwinn- 710Dont remember this one but its got to be 1890s - is that a
plunger brake on the front
Electra - 200made by Adler. I thought these machines were only sold in
Melbourne during the 1890s ( this is modestly priced)
Paratroopers bike- 343 these were common when I was a kid but these
days if complete with brakes and knock through pedals are bringing
serious money
I thought the Jack Taylor tandem triplet tricycle 616 was a beauty but
be warned you need some real space to store this little monster

Anyway good hunting. Some of the prices look a little high but then in
this business you sometimes have to take your opportunities when they
present. Annemarie is realistic and will negotiate as her email
suggests so if interested give her a call. Remember the bikes I have
pointed out are my choice and there are lots of other goodies for you
to consider.

If you can't see them in 'files' on the vintagecycleclub site, then open the attachment with this email. It is 3MB, so if that is too big a file for you, let me know I can send you a spreadsheet without the photos.

oops, I think you might have meant "see the bikes" not the photos.
I will be open on Sunday 29th November from 4pm to 6pm for buyers to pick up their bikes. Let me know which ones you are interested in, so I can tag any for you.

Dear Don and others,

The invite from Harry Hart (organiser)  was a direct request to Paul/Charlie to put a display of bikes in the foyer together with an infield display to showcase the history of cycling.  During the interval we rode 10 of the bikes around the track - so apologies that you missed out - it was a select invite list and didn't go out on the Vintage list.

However if there are any other similar invites you'll be on the call-up list.  As an alternative we could liven things up by having some Penny racing during the interval - maybe not going too high up the banking though.

Cheers

Charlie Farren
