Subject: [ketelblastr] To begin a lengthy discussion...

Greetings all,

Well it was certainly a grand time at the gathering at Ketelblastr's
new home in the Powdermill Resort. Based on the discussions held
during the meeting I'd like to make a few recommendations,
observations and clarifications.

Firstly, I would like everyone involved to think things through for a
period of two weeks. Meaning that, next Saturday we can discuss the
issues at hand 'face to face' so to speak (as well as use the email to
bring other thoughts/concerns into light). The following Saturday we
should make the decisions formally either by vote or agreement.

Bylaws; everything from 'membership' to 'how decisions are made',
should be written down. It all can be changed as agreed on by the
group but we need a form of structure (even a loose, informal one) so
everyone has rights and a 'soapbox' to stand on and is not trampled
into silence by a louder voice. If anyone has a suggestion on a bylaw
topic (how things should be done/handled) please post it. I will draw
up an outline and present it before next week.

Officer positions; ( www.sca.org/docs/library.html#officers ) Scroll
down to "Society Officers Documents" to learn more about any of the
positions.

Everyone needs to rethink their roles in our group. This is a serious
issue but all-in-all it is all for fun (sounds like a good battle cry
"Fun for All & All for Fun!!"). Anyone that does decide to take a
position will have help in becoming familiar with it and in executing
the functions of that position. In reality, all the officers of
Ketelblastr are actually the deputies of the Darkstone officers and
will be coached, taught or shown as much as they need to be. Certain
members have certain strengths and I'd like to suggest that those of
us with special abilities or knowledge use them to help make our group
a prosperous well functioning one.

From "Northshield New Groups Policy" (2004); required are...
* At least 3 Officers, including a Seneschal, an Exchequer, and one of
the following: a Herald, a Marshal, or a Minister of Arts and
Sciences. Local branches are encouraged to fill all the latter positions.
* At least 5 subscribing Members.

SCA Membership Fees: This would be included in the bylaws but I
believe it will need a bit of discussion before it gets there. What do
you think of the group supporting the SCA membership fees of the 'five
subscribing members' we need to be a forming group. The membership
fees of the three core 'officer' positions could be given as an
incentive to take on those positions, the other two sustaining members
could be awarded by a lottery (to simplify and make the awarding
fair). Of coarse People could decline the group payment of the fee and
pay their own.

Well, If I think of anything else I'll post them so we all have time
to consider their worth.

Be Well and may Finnish winds fill your sails,

Greetings all.

Well, the idea for me becoming Senechal is indeed an honor. When Don
brought it up the first time, I was taken aback as well, but I
started thinking about it and the idea became far less scary. When
Jeremy mentioned it a couple weeks ago, I began to take the idea
seriously. I spoke to Don about it and like I told him, I am happy
serving the group in any capacity. If the group would benefit from me
being the Senechal, then I will happily take the position. If the
group benefits more from me retaining the Exchequer position, then I
will happily keep it.

I am indeed honored that people would concider me forf the position,
as am I honored that you place your trust in me for the Exchequer
position. Speaking of which, I should inform you that I have not yet
turned over the money. Given the waether conditions yesterday, I
didn't trust my car or myself to get there and back safely, lol. So
yeah, The money will be turned over next week, or the next time I
meet with Riva, and as discussed I shall get a signature etc to make
it all nice and secure for both sides.

Given that I have never had a book keeping position before, I've been
super cautious (probably overly so) and leaving no room for anyone to
have doubts about where money went and how much was handled, etc.

But yeah, concerning the Senechal business, we should all think about
it and discuss it at our next meeting. Be well, and thank you for the
nomination.

With J.P. being gracious to volunteer for Seneschal and Tina's willingness to be Exchequer, I will fill the position of Minister of Arts and Sciences, if I am nominated.

I figured I should probably post this as a separate message since I have not yet posted our minutes from the last meeting. I contacted Cassie about posting the minutes from the meeting before the bake sale and she said she would get on it tonight, after which I shall post the minutes from our last meeting at Powder Mill Creek.

Ketelblastr will have our next meeting on Saturday, February 28th beginning at 7:30pm at Powder Mill Creek. It will be preceded by line drilling and no-contact drills which will begin at 4:00 at Powder Mill Creek, unless some Darkstone Marshals show up, in which case there will be some fighting going on!!

I shall also mention that Don (D'Fence school of swordplay) will be hosting a foil fencing class on Thursday, February 26th from 6:00 - 9:00 at Powder Mill Creek. If you are interested in foil fencing, show up!

While over here at my brother's cat sitting I've had some free time
to browse the SCA website and I found a couple of events listed in
the calandar that sparked my interest, and hopefully your's as well.

The first is Haire Affaire of the Heart, hosted by the Shire of
Falcon's Keep in Wausua WI on March 28th 2009. There aren't too many
details posted up, but the planned activities are: Armored Combat ,
Arts & Sciences Display , Bardic Activities , Classes , Dancing , and
Rapier Combat.

More info can be found here:
http://www.northshield.org/Events/EventAd.aspx?ID=516

The other event that truly has me interested in attending is: Road to
the Isle Xlll: 1349: We're Not Dead Yet!, hosted by our neighbors to
the North, the Shire of Mistig Waetru (South Range MI)on April 18,
2009.
Activities include: Armored Combat , Arts & Sciences Display , Arts &
Sciences Competition ,Bardic Activities,Classes,Dancing,Rapier
Combat, and Siege Weapons.
More info can be found here:

It looks like a good time could be had by all and it would be great
for us to show up in force to let everyone know that there's some new
kids in town!

Sorry about your condition, it sounds a bit constipating to have a late sit. If anyone else notices their sit is late, it could be contagious.

I'm looking forward to the stew... as long as it isn't a sit stew.

I think we'll have a couple of new faces show up at the meeting, so we can see how their sit is too.

Have a great sit,

Sorry about your condition, it sounds a bit constipating to have a late sit. If anyone else notices their sit is late, it could be contagious.

I'm looking forward to the stew... as long as it isn't a sit stew.

I think we'll have a couple of new faces show up at the meeting, so we can see how their sit is too.

Have a great sit,

Frost, the Norseman who always enjoys a good sit.

Evening all. Just writing this because I feel I should inform the group
of this info, given that it does affect us. I have just purchased
membership for myself, Hollie and Cody. That means I can now hold
office legally! Also, I feel I should let you all know that I turned
over the money yesterday and also bestowed all the certificates of
thanks to their respective recipients.

Meeting notes to come.

Just to let you know, I couldn't see it either in my e-mail or here, nor dld it
as an attachment either here or in my e-mail, though Hollie's e-mail acct was
able to dld it..how odd. Either way, I looked at it, and it looks good.

Along the same lines, I am working on a membership form for those whom wish to
be active members in the group, check it out in the files section. I think it it
pretty concise, albeit too stuffy. I had better add some wit into it before
posting.

Forming Shire of Ketelblastr
Meeting Notes
Saturday February 21st, 2009
Powder Mill Creek

Members Present
Tina Popko-MoAS, J.P. Salazar-Exchequer (and makeshift webminister) , Don German, Jeremy Brown, Kristian Popko, Lawrence Brozzo, Amalea Kravetz, Virginia Burgess, Toby Burgess, Guile Burgess, Brandon Burgess

Visiting guests: Darkstone

New Venue

This is the first meeting of Ketelblastr in our new home. Don informed us at our Bake sale of the fact that Powder Mill Creek accepted our forming group into their resort, a week later and here we are!

Bake Sale Wrap-up

JP formally informed the group of the bake sale's profits, and everyone was pleased by the amount reported. All volunteer bakers refused re-imbursement so all monies, minus the change monies provided by JP, will be considered profits. JP will turn the money over to Darkstone next time he goes up to Darkstone.

Ketelblastr's Bank Account

Darkstone explained to us that until we become an official SCA group, our monies will be added into their account, which we can then transfer over into our own bank account once we become official. As such, JP will be requiring a signature from Darkstone's Exchequer to ensure the financial security of both, our sponsoring group and ourselves, when turning over monies.

Thanks Certificates

JP showed the official Ketelblastr certificate of thanks to present peoples for review. Given the current lack of a Seneschal, it was suggested that titles be omitted for the time. Certificates will be printed for Barb Hutchinson, Kmart, and Powder Mill Creek.

-JP will also work on a scroll box for presenting these certificates to their respective recipients.

What We Are Able To Do: Explained

The Honorable Lord and Seneschal of Darkstone, Cyveiliog, and Lord Thomas Bjornarson explained to us what our limits are concerning Martial practices. Given the lack of Marshalls, our practices are limited to no-contact line drills, as well as choreographed drills. This means that so long as our drilling is choreographed and not real fighting, we are allright.

Officer Positions: Explained

Darkstone explained to us the position of Herald. THL Cyveiliog explained it as "the equivalent of Vice President of a group."

-The legality of cohabitating officers was also clarified. Cohabitating people may not hold the positions of Seneschal and Exchequer at the same time. All other combinations (including one being Seneschal or Exchequer) is permisable.

Participation At Renn Faire

As a member of the LSRF committee, JP informed Darkstone of a proposed role in the Renn Faire as Front Gate guards. They explained that as a group, they would not do it because of liability and responsibility, but as individuals, they would have to discuss it.

Officer Positons

Jeremy was asked once more about his previous nomination for Seneschal, he said we would have to think about it. Don made a new nomination for JP to take the position of Seneschal, and Tina was nominated to take over the position of Exchequer. Such a transition would benefit the group by occupying the main two officer positions and inviting others to fill in the remaining positions needed. No official elections were held.

Misc:
-Darkstone openly invites us to their practices held every Sunday at Salem Baptist Church. 1616 Beaser Ave, Ashland WI from 4:00-8:00. It is a great opportunity to meet and form a bond and relationship with our sponsoring group as well as get some fighting in!

-Mark of Darkstone was over earlier at JP's place giving an armoring lesson. He showed the basics of leather working, wax hardening and rattan sword making. A lamellar cuirass for Cody was begun and JP`s basket-hilt was brought up to snuff. Mark has offered to do more classes on leather armour, as well as metal armour which wil be scheduled later.

Next Meeting

Ketelblastr will have our next meeting on Saturday, February 28th beginning at 7:30pm at Powder Mill Creek. It will be preceded by line drilling and no-contact drills which will begin at 4:00 at Powder Mill Creek, unless some Darkstone Marshals show up, in which case there will be some fighting going on!!

Also, let it be known that Don (D'Fence School of the Sword) will be

hosting a foil fencing class on Thursday, February 26th from 6:00 - 9:00

at Powder Mill Creek. If you are interested in foil fencing, show up.

Forming Shire of Ketelblastr
Meeting Notes
Saturday February 28th, 2009
Powder Mill Creek

Members Present
Tina Popko-MoAS, J.P. Salazar-Exchequer, Don German, Kristian Popko, Lawrence Brozzo, Cassandra Gibbs-Chronicler, Amalea Kravetz, Virginia Burgess, Holly S.

Money From Bake Sale

JP is bringing money from Bake Sale tomorrow to Darkstone. $272.82

Thanks Certificates

JP printed out the certificates and made a scroll box. Virginia made some pouches for the certificates. We presented the first thanks certificate to Corinne made out to Rick pearson & Staff of Powder Mill Creek. JP will hand out the other certificates made out to Barb Hutchinson and K-mart.

New Officer positions

We discussed the officer positions once more and made official nominations which are as follows.

-NOMINATONS-

JP-Seneschal, accepted

Tina-Exchequer, accepted

Don-Herald, not accepted

Lenore-Minister of Arts and Sciences, accepted

Hollie-Deputy Chronicler, accepted

It was decided that if you were not going to be present during voting, you can relay your votes to another group member or post your vote on the group website.

A formal vote will be held next week for new officer positions.

Storage

We will ask Corinne about possibly storing some of our equipment and supplies at the resort.

Newspaper Ad

Tina posted an ad in the Ironwood globe about our group, we discussed how to emphasize that we are not affiliated with the L.S.R.F. or M.A.R.S. The term Living History Group was accepted.

Participation At Renn Faire

Cassie brought up a few ideas on ways to coordinate or watch children so parents can become involved in the group with less worry about their children. Ideas brought up were revolving schedules for watching very young children, and making activities for older children such as arts and crafts.

An Occupied Date at PMC

Corinne has informed us that the date of May 2nd has been booked for a wedding. As such, that is a date that we will not be able to meet at Powder Mill Creek. Plans will have to be made for that date to meet elsewhere.

Next Meeting

Ketelblastr will have our next meeting on Saturday, March 7th beginning at 6:00 pm at Powder Mill Creek. It will be preceded by line drilling and no-contact drills which will begin at 4:00 at Powder Mill Creek, unless some Darkstone Marshals show up, in which case there will be some fighting going on!!

Also, let it be known that Don (D'Fence School of the Sword) will be

Forming Shire of Ketelblastr
Meeting Notes
Saturday March 7th, 2009
Powder Mill Creek

Members Present

Cassandra Gibbs-Chronicler, Hollie Salazar-Deputy Chronicler, Lawrence Brozzo, JP Salazar-Seneschal, Lenore Koski-MoAS, Don German, Christina Popko-Exchequer, Amalea Kravetz, Cody Durant, Kristian Popko. Visitors- Mark and Theron of Darkstone.

Money From Bake Sale

On March 1st of 2009, money was turned over to Darkstone`s exchequer. How much money was received, who counted the money and the counted amount was recorded and signed off by Rebecca. JP is working on the necessary paperwork.

Storage

Storage was secured for our group. Corinne and the staff of PMC designated a room for us to store our gear and supplies.

Meetings

It was discussed that meeting times need to be reevaluated, and agreed upon. Don and Lenore suggested an online poll.

The group discussed the need to distinguish and separate business meetings(or Things, as they may be referred to), from gatherings (classes, practices etc).

It was decided that we will hold business meetings on a weekly basis until further notice.

New Officer positions

Voting was held and the new officer positions are as follows:

JP- Seneschal

Lenore-MoAS

Tina-Exchequer

Cassie-Chronicler

Hollie- Deputy Chronicler

Devices

The use of, and design of Devices was discussed. Our current group device should pass, but further research is needed before it is submitted to the College of Heralds.

Bylaws

Don has been working on bylaws for a couple weeks now and the proposed bylaws were read off and discussed. We will have an end date for ideas, suggestions and modifications to the current laws in two weeks(March 21st). Cy raised concerns over the legality of some of them, and will look into whether or not the SCA will allow them.

Database

Lenore suggested starting up a database on the Yahoo group. It would involve info on the members, their SCA name, contact info and current and past projects. This information would be for public viewing.

Lenore will act as temporary Chatelaine for this project.

Meeting Minutes

It was agreed that from henceforth, meeting minutes will be posted up on the Yahoo group in a timely manner, a week or less being the time frame.

Group Designation

The possibility of using a term other than "Shire" was discussed. Don will present a "Classy yet Rugged" suggestion at a later date.

SCA Events

-Ideas for SCA events have been discussed. As Ketelblastr, we have briefly discussed a New Year's Ball and a Feast for our surrounding neighbors such as Darkstone and Mistig Waetru.

-Darkstone has suggested we co-host Dance Macabre (to be held around October) with them since our site is ideal for such an event. This will have to be discussed more with the officers and populace of Darkstone.

Fund Raisers

-Lea brought up the idea of another fundraiser. We agreed that it would be too soon to hold another bake sale around Easter time, but that a different fund raiser might be do-able. The idea of a Carwash was proposed with the women wearing wench type garb, or as it was phrased "scantily clad wenches". The idea of men wearing wench garb was also discussed, and fretted upon by Cy much to everyone's amusement. A bake sale will definitely be held sometime in the future though since our first one was as successful as it was. A proposed date for another bake sale was Mother's Day. JP's salesman skills at our Valentine's Day bake sale were lauded.

-It was confirmed that if we were to hold a fund raiser at Wal-Mart, they will match all funds raised.

-Members were asked to think of ideas for fundraisers by the next meeting.

Misc

-We should approach old MARS members and inform/ask if they would be interested in joining our group.

-It was agreed that since Powder mill Creek has been so good to us, we should "earn our keep" by doing volunteer work within the facility. IE: help clean kitchen and site, or buying supplies such as paper products or cleaning supplies.

-The possibility of creating a Minister of Children position was discussed. If done, the person would lead children in arts and crafts and other activities to keep youngsters occupied so parents could participate in the other activities. Donations would be accepted, and those monies would be used for supplies for said arts and crafts.

-The MIA meeting minutes from Feb. 7th will be posted at a later date.

Next Meeting

Ketelblastr will have our next business meeting(Thing) on Saturday, March 14th beginning at 4:00 pm at Powder Mill Creek. It will be followed by line drilling and no-contact drills, unless some Darkstone Marshals show up, in which case there will be some fighting going on!!

Also, let it be known that Don (D'Fence School of the Sword) will be hosting a foil fencing class on Thursday, March 12th from 6:00 - 8:00 at Powder Mill Creek. If you are interested in foil fencing, show up!

Attention All Members!
I have created a member list and information database. Please fill this out.
Your name is required and at least one method of contact is strongly
recommended. You can edit your own information as needed.

This information should not be viewed by the general public. You would need to
be an accepted member of this Ketelblastr Yahoo Group to read this information.

To the left of this screen click on Database, then Roll Call.
Upper right click on Add Record.

This information is to enable members to contact each other, get to know each
other, find others with similar interests and possible resources and keep track
of projects(for Arts & Sciences purposes).

There is room for two more categories, if anyone has any suggestions, let me
know.

Thanks, All!

Many SCA local groups and kingdoms have Children's Activities officers, who
assist parents in integrating children's activities into events. The Society
Children's Officer Coordinator oversees the efforts of these kingdom officers.

Websites are listed that contain information both for Children's Activities
Officers and for families with children. These sites have links to each
kingdom's Youth Policies, Minors' Forms, Youth Combat, Childrens' (Pages)

Here is a link to the Midrealm's Youth Policies:

http://www.midrealm.org/mkyouth/education.htm

It is an example of what some kingdom's may cover.

This is an excerpt (from above) of what I think someone was discussing at past
meetings:

   5. The Children's Area - At events it is nice, but not mandatory, to set up an
area for children to play in. Primarily it is used by younger children (6 and
under). If you do have one the MOY is not there to baby sit. But you can help
organize a parent's co-op for baby sitting, or this can be a service activity
for older children, or if the group agrees hire a non SCA person to baby sit.
This may also be the area where you hold your classes.

These are just examples of what we could do - possibilities are (almost)
endless!!!
