1-when is the next meeting?

2-Don and I have been talking about norse runes and writing in runes
and came up with an idear. What if we change the groups name to what it
would look like in norse phoenetix spelling? instead of "ketillblaster"
it would be "ketelblastr". Don brought up a good point that the college
of heralds would love it, and I think it would add a lil mystique and
authenticity to our group. Just a thought to discuss at our next
meeting. Right now would be the time to do it since we are still a
forming group and all.

Be well, Fortune favors the bold.

Forming Shire of Ketelblastr
Meeting Notes
Saturday January 24th, 2009
J.P. Salazar's house

Members Present
Tina Popko-MoAS, J.P. Salazar-Exchequer (and makeshift webminister) , Kristian Popko, Lawrence Brozzo, Hollie Salazar, Virginia Burgess, Don German

Change of Name's Spelling
It was voted that in order to make our group name more authentic, we would officially change the spelling of our group name from "Ketillblaster" to the Norse spelling of "Ketelblastr"

Venue Issues
We have been looking for a place to fence and gather for a while now, and it seems we are close to having one with Jeff Zakula who purchased the ld Big Dollar building in Bessemer. Don and JP have been speaking with Jeff, his insurance broker, Meistari Katriona-our Kingdom Senechal, and Patricia LaChance-the SCA's insurance liason to come to an agreement concerning insurance arrangements. Don and JP will speak to Jeff and Nick Zakula about not requiring a named Proof of Insurance. Should it still be required, we have agreed on (as requested by the SCA) meeting dates and times and will pool the needed $50 fee.

Meeting Dates
Our proposed meeting dates (pending agreement from Jeff Zakula) are as follows:
Thursdays 6:00-9:00pm. (this will be an open date for workshops, emergency meetings and crafts)
Saturdays 4:00-9:00pm. (this will be our formal practice and craft gathering day, as well as meeting date.)

Ideas For Recruitment
In order to recruit more members, we could hold events such as masked balls to promote ourselves. Fighting outdoors in the summer months will also help. The use of pamphlets and fliers would help too.

Ideas For Fundraising
The group responded well to the idea of a fundraiser bake sale. JP Salazar volunteered to speak with the manager of K-Mart to hold the fundraiser between their doors for a sale before Valentine's day. Other ideas proposed were a car wash, washing cars with foam axes and things of the sort. Perhaps sell rocks at sales.

Misc:
-Perhaps involvement in the group could count towards school credits as far as athletics or extracurricular.

-JP informed the group of a purchase of 2-3 hides of armour grade leather. We hope to have that shipment in sometime soon.

-We will create a portfolio for our members to write down their personna informaton, i.e. their real name, their personna's name, location, race, stories, etc.

-JP baked Daryoles for the meeting, which were enjoyed by most if not all. Upon request, here is the link for the recipe.
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Medieval-Custard-Pie-Daryoles/Detail.aspx?prop31=7
I shall also post up the link in the "links" section of our group.

Next Meeting
Saturday, January 31st 2009. JP Salazar's house.

Forming Shire of Ketelblastr
Meeting Notes
Saturday January 31st, 2009
J.P. Salazar's house

Members Present
Tina Popko-MoAS, J.P. Salazar-Exchequer (and makeshift webminister) , Kristian Popko, Lawrence Brozzo, Amalea Kravetz, Hollie Salazar, Virginia Burgess, Toby Burgess

A Musical Gift
Courtesy of Mr. Jeff Pockat, JP will soon have a Gaelic harp CD for use at our meetings, events, gatherings, etc.

Venue Issues
There has been no word yet concerning our status of holding meetings/practices at the old Big Dollar building. JP will follow up on that.

Plans for a bake-sale fundraiser
-There will be a (presumed) bake-sale fundraiser held at the Ironwood K-mart on Valentine's Day, Saturday February 14th from 10:00am-4:30pm, or later if needed. We will begin setup at 9:30, and will all dress in garb as well as make use of what decorations we have. JP will speak to Steven at K-mart to confirm date, ask about electrical outlets/the sale of hot beverages and ask about the use of rapiers as a decoration.

-Virginia volunteered the use of her tables, and a donation cauldron, Tina will bring the cash box. Volunteer bakers will be JP and Hollie Salazar, Christina Popko and her Mother, Cassie Gibbs, Amalea Kravetz, and Bethesda Kivi.

-Proposed offerings are: 7 layer bars, gingerbread cookies, red velvet cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies, Rieska bread, Rice Krispie treats, Kolacky, 3 types of brownies, sugar cookies, rose flavored spritzgeback and pumpkin-applesauce muffins. There is a possibility of hot beverages.

-Virginia will contact Mr. Larry Peterson of WIMI/WJMS about radio promotion of our sale. No fee is anticipated.

-JP will work on modifying a trifold pamphlet provided on SCA.org for our group for use at the bake sale for recruitment/information. Hollie will create ad posters for businesses.

-In the case of selling out of products, we will pack up and leave, but leave a note on the machines. In the case we are left with excess, we will donate it to senior centers.

-Hollie will ask her mother about getting free eggs. All expenses, donations, and on-hand items will be recorded by JP. Any donations will be repaid by a certificate of thanks.

-We shall make use of Mr. Pockat's cd at the sale, Hollie will provide the boombox.

Misc:
-The topic of Shaken Chicken Syndrome was briefly touched as a result of a conversation about checking farm fresh eggs. Merriment ensued.

-JP will speak to Riva of Darkstone concerning a tax exempt number.

-JP will bring example versions of the thanks certificate, as well as the trifold pamphlet and persona page for the group to see and approve to the next meeting.

Next Meeting
Saturday, February 7th 2009. JP Salazar's house at 1:00pm.

** SPECIAL MEETING**
There will be a special meeting on
Thursday, February 12th, 2009 from 6:00pm-9:00pm
at JP's house to make posters for the bake sale.

Allrighty, updates.

I talked to K-mart and all is set up for our bake sale. There ARE
outlets, so we can use those. All our decorations will have to be
approved the day of..I should assume that means any blades and things
of the sort.

I have downloaded the tri-fold flier from SCA.org and have re-created
it in Microsoft Word with a little more flare. I will meet with Don
for suggestions on how to modify/word it for our uses.

As discussed at the meeting, Hollie came up with a flier for the bake
sale. We will be posting them up at locations such as Ironwood &
Hurley Super1, Sunday Lake Supermarket, Bessemer & Wakefield Citgo,
Britespot, Bessemer BP, Bessemer Credit union, and Hurley Coffee
Company..possibly one in K-mart. Of course, these are all supposed
locations..but we're gonna try for all of them. Hope you all don't
mind that we are going ahead and posting them before full group
approval, but we would like to get word out ASAP. If you don't like
em, you can rip em down and we can make a new one, lol.

There is much more more business, but that will be discussed at the
next meeting. Lots of good things are coming our way..that's all I'll
reveal as of now.

OH, and a lil tidbit of info that might make us fighters proud...the
youtube videos I uploaded have been watched in Michigan, Washington,
France, Spain, Poland and Ireland!! We're an international
sensation! :D

An Official Message from your Exchequer

Greetings all,
I am writing this message as a sort of bake-sale wrap up.

I want to thank all of you who baked for and worked at the bake sale for all your hard work. Without going into exact amounts, which I shall inform you of at our next meeting, I shall say that because of you our bake sake was indeed a success! It was most certainly a worthwhile endeavour and it helped out group out quite a bit! We will definitely count on bake sales as future fundraiser events.

All but 12 of our pamphlets were handed out or taken, and we ALMOST sold out! The public was very gracious, generous and indeed responsive to our group, so a BIG thanks to the general public whom gave of themselves to help us. We also ran into 3 former S.C.A. members whom are interested in re-joining! If they do, we'll have some great new members who will be able to teach us quite a bit about dancing.

A special thanks to Tina for providing us with a military can opener when all seemed lost, to Don for bringing us my helm and good news, as well as the K-mart management and staff whom hosted our group! I talked to some of the staff afterwards and thanked them for having us, I intend to make a thanks certificate for them.

The aforementioned good news that Don brought is that
our group now has a place to gather and fight!!!!
So way to go Don Nacho, ju da mang dog! Our gathering place shall be Powdermill Creek, I intend to make a thanks certificate for them as well.

So yeah, that's the scoop, thanks again, I shall see you all at our next meeting!

Well folks, I have been a-talkin with a few folks and it is decided
that our next meeting (Saturday, Feb 21st) will be held at Powder Mill
Creek, our new residence, at the official scheduled time of 4-9pm. It
would be best that we start going by the time we agreed on now that we
have a formal place to gather.

So yeah, I'll be calling those of you whom I have phone numbers for in
person to let you know, should you not check this in time.

ALSO, (and again..the extra phone call will apply) Mark from Darkstone
has agreed to help our group with a few armouring sessions in which we
will learn how to make the basics (cuirass, pauldrons, tassetts, legs,
bracers etc) and he has also agreed to show us how to wax harden as
opposed to water harden our armour. These sessions will be open to all
in our group. If you are interested, let me know via e-mail (or if you
have my number, call me) BEFORE Saturday..the sooner the better as Mark
might be able to do it this Saturday before our scheduled meeting at
Powder Mill Creek.

Adios all! Hope to see you at POwder Mill Creek! Oh..BTW..should anyone
care to bring a dish, we could make this a pot-luck type of gathering.
I'll try to bring something for us to eat, like a stew or perhaps a
Chili dish. Not very authentic..but it'll fill ya up pretty good!

Greetings all,

Well it was certainly a grand time at the gathering at Ketelblastr's
new home in the Powdermill Resort. Based on the discussions held
during the meeting I'd like to make a few recommendations,
observations and clarifications.

Firstly, I would like everyone involved to think things through for a
period of two weeks. Meaning that, next Saturday we can discuss the
issues at hand 'face to face' so to speak (as well as use the email to
bring other thoughts/concerns into light). The following Saturday we
should make the decisions formally either by vote or agreement.

Bylaws; everything from 'membership' to 'how decisions are made',
should be written down. It all can be changed as agreed on by the
group but we need a form of structure (even a loose, informal one) so
everyone has rights and a 'soapbox' to stand on and is not trampled
into silence by a louder voice. If anyone has a suggestion on a bylaw
topic (how things should be done/handled) please post it. I will draw
up an outline and present it before next week.

Officer positions; ( www.sca.org/docs/library.html#officers ) Scroll
down to "Society Officers Documents" to learn more about any of the
positions.

Everyone needs to rethink their roles in our group. This is a serious
issue but all-in-all it is all for fun (sounds like a good battle cry
"Fun for All & All for Fun!!"). Anyone that does decide to take a
position will have help in becoming familiar with it and in executing
the functions of that position. In reality, all the officers of
Ketelblastr are actually the deputies of the Darkstone officers and
will be coached, taught or shown as much as they need to be. Certain
members have certain strengths and I'd like to suggest that those of
us with special abilities or knowledge use them to help make our group
a prosperous well functioning one.

From "Northshield New Groups Policy" (2004); required are...
* At least 3 Officers, including a Seneschal, an Exchequer, and one of
the following: a Herald, a Marshal, or a Minister of Arts and
Sciences. Local branches are encouraged to fill all the latter positions.
* At least 5 subscribing Members.

SCA Membership Fees: This would be included in the bylaws but I
believe it will need a bit of discussion before it gets there. What do
you think of the group supporting the SCA membership fees of the 'five
subscribing members' we need to be a forming group. The membership
fees of the three core 'officer' positions could be given as an
incentive to take on those positions, the other two sustaining members
could be awarded by a lottery (to simplify and make the awarding
fair). Of coarse People could decline the group payment of the fee and
pay their own.

Well, If I think of anything else I'll post them so we all have time
to consider their worth.

Be Well and may Finnish winds fill your sails,

Salutations Fellow Ketelblastrs

I was a bit taken aback on Saturday when it was proposed
That I move into the exchequer position and JP move into the
Seneschal position.  By all rights JP has actually been doing
All of it; and doing a mighty fine job of it and then some.  Since
I do have some bookkeeping background I will accept the
Position if JP will step up to be our official illustrious leader.  I
Couldn't think of a better man for the job! ( Besides he is doing
The work, he should get the credit.)

I will very much appreciate any and all guidance I am offered from

Subject: [ketelblastr] To begin a lengthy discussion...

Greetings all.

Well, the idea for me becoming Senechal is indeed an honor. When Don
brought it up the first time, I was taken aback as well, but I
started thinking about it and the idea became far less scary. When
Jeremy mentioned it a couple weeks ago, I began to take the idea
seriously. I spoke to Don about it and like I told him, I am happy
serving the group in any capacity. If the group would benefit from me
being the Senechal, then I will happily take the position. If the
group benefits more from me retaining the Exchequer position, then I
will happily keep it.

I am indeed honored that people would concider me forf the position,
as am I honored that you place your trust in me for the Exchequer
position. Speaking of which, I should inform you that I have not yet
turned over the money. Given the waether conditions yesterday, I
didn't trust my car or myself to get there and back safely, lol. So
yeah, The money will be turned over next week, or the next time I
meet with Riva, and as discussed I shall get a signature etc to make
it all nice and secure for both sides.

Given that I have never had a book keeping position before, I've been
super cautious (probably overly so) and leaving no room for anyone to
have doubts about where money went and how much was handled, etc.

But yeah, concerning the Senechal business, we should all think about
it and discuss it at our next meeting. Be well, and thank you for the
nomination.

I figured I should probably post this as a separate message since I have not yet posted our minutes from the last meeting. I contacted Cassie about posting the minutes from the meeting before the bake sale and she said she would get on it tonight, after which I shall post the minutes from our last meeting at Powder Mill Creek.

Ketelblastr will have our next meeting on Saturday, February 28th beginning at 7:30pm at Powder Mill Creek. It will be preceded by line drilling and no-contact drills which will begin at 4:00 at Powder Mill Creek, unless some Darkstone Marshals show up, in which case there will be some fighting going on!!

I shall also mention that Don (D'Fence school of swordplay) will be hosting a foil fencing class on Thursday, February 26th from 6:00 - 9:00 at Powder Mill Creek. If you are interested in foil fencing, show up!

While over here at my brother's cat sitting I've had some free time
to browse the SCA website and I found a couple of events listed in
the calandar that sparked my interest, and hopefully your's as well.

The first is Haire Affaire of the Heart, hosted by the Shire of
Falcon's Keep in Wausua WI on March 28th 2009. There aren't too many
details posted up, but the planned activities are: Armored Combat ,
Arts & Sciences Display , Bardic Activities , Classes , Dancing , and
Rapier Combat.

More info can be found here:

The other event that truly has me interested in attending is: Road to
the Isle Xlll: 1349: We're Not Dead Yet!, hosted by our neighbors to
the North, the Shire of Mistig Waetru (South Range MI)on April 18,
2009.
Activities include: Armored Combat , Arts & Sciences Display , Arts &
Sciences Competition ,Bardic Activities,Classes,Dancing,Rapier
Combat, and Siege Weapons.

It looks like a good time could be had by all and it would be great

Sorry about your condition, it sounds a bit constipating to have a late sit. If anyone else notices their sit is late, it could be contagious.

I'm looking forward to the stew... as long as it isn't a sit stew.

I think we'll have a couple of new faces show up at the meeting, so we can see how their sit is too.

Have a great sit,

Evening all. Just writing this because I feel I should inform the group
of this info, given that it does affect us. I have just purchased
membership for myself, Hollie and Cody. That means I can now hold
office legally! Also, I feel I should let you all know that I turned
over the money yesterday and also bestowed all the certificates of
thanks to their respective recipients.

Meeting notes to come.
