Hi all,
Thursday the 29th,6:30pm at bluff view park in Bessemer. Yes, that's
right we're starting again after a tooo llooonng hiatus. We're still
looking for a place, although there are a couple of spots that may be
available.

Bring a stick or something similar that you won't mind laying on the
ground and occasionally stepping on. we'll keep it simple 'cause I know
not everyone has been practicing and keeping in shape - that includes
me!

I'll go over how the class will be structured this season and how it
will coincide with the SCA.

See you then,
Lord Frost Froknarson aka Coach Don

Allright. I've been in contact with Tim Sobolewski (the faire
photographer) and he informed me that the pics from the 2008 Lake
Superior Ren Faire are now up! Have a look for yourselves, he did great
work. Who knows, you might just see yourself up on there!

Allrighty. Some of you know, some of you don't.

I have recently purchased 12 rattan sticks, all SCA legal thickness.
Now, obviously I don't need 12 sticks (especially since they are 8 ft
11 inches each), so I'll be keeping 2 and the remaining 10 are up for
sale. I don't know how much each pole will sell for, but I will sell
them to you guys at cost. I don't feel right making money off of you
since we are comrades in this quest to better ourselves through fencing
and the SCA. All I will say is that it is looking that each pole will
be a little on the pricey side, so an estimate might be $20 per pole.
Again, that is an ESTIMATE, it might be more or less once I get the
second bundle and the invoice tomorrow (most likely. Keep in mind that
each pole is 8' 11", so out of that you could get at LEAST 2 swords. So
yeah, this Thursday I will bring some rattan to practice. Those who
wish to buy, come prepared.

JUst a thought, but perhaps we could get to planning.

Once we become an official SCA group (if we aren't already), perhaps we
could all throw an SCA "event". Given that the definition of "event" is
so loose, we could do something as simple as a party. I propose perhaps
having a beachfront bonfire over at Black River Harbor and throw some
midieval theme in. Perhaps we could learn how to cook fish as the old
norse did, or sing old drinkin songs round a bonfire. Maybe if we could
swing it, we could do some axe throwing or some such. Dunno, just a
thought. I've been planning some sort of party o'er at my place, but
that requires the approval of my landlords and a willingness on yoru
behalf to deal with the slight chance of a black bear wandering in on
our transpirings at night. lol. ....I'm serious!!

A large, growly and hairy crasher at a party???  Sounds Norse to me!

Really, that's a good idea. I might suggest doing something at the Sunday Lake Pavillion - more visible and might get some people interested.  (Maybe easier on gas) They used to have a cabin you could rent for a day or two and it was reasonable back in the day. That's another option.
As far as drinking songs go, we do have a resident "expert" even if they are his own "creative expressions!"  (Hmmmm, Don?!?)

Hey there gang.

This is JP, here to let you know that Don will be unavailable this
week to coach, and has left me in charge of his gear and you guys.
Hence, I shall be your instructor once more!...class, quit snickering
and groaning. :P

As such, fencing is ON for this Thursday at Bluff valley park, at 6,
just as always. Bring your gear, bring your cups (lest you lose your
dangly bits) and bring a welding glove or something of the sort if
you got it. Heck, even a winter glove will do! If you have a gorget,
bring it. If you have something like a shield (buckler by
preference), bring it. If you have a baton (or a foot and a half-ish
long wooden dowell), bring it.

The ONLY thing asides from a freak bear attack or UFO abduction that
will deter this week's meeting will be inclement weather. So class,
let's join hands and pray for no rain, snow, sleet, heat waves, cold
snaps, earthquakes, floods, tornados, mudslides, hurricanes,
tsunamis, or sandstorms. If it rains earlier that day, we'll fence in
the pavillion.

Adios for now, and we shall see eachother soon.

Well, the earth has had its way and it's getting darker and darker
earlier and earlier. AS Such, since Don has not gotten back as far as I
know, I am gonna start fencing earlier tomorrow. Let's shoot for 5,
that way we have some daylight to fence in....it'll help us see while
we're fencing..which I understand is a good thing. I'm trying my best
to get us a place indoors to fence, but no such luck yet. Hopefully
next week will be a diff story.

So yeah, Bluff valley Park, 5:00, bring your nut cups and killer
instincts...or reasonable facsimile thereof.

Be well,
substitute coach JP

Aaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllrighty, I write to take a formal count of what
is needed! Please answer ASAP.

How many sides of leather shall we need? What gauges? I wish to place
the order soon (within the next two or three weeks) so that we can
have our leather and begin making our armour. As I said, I can&will
gladly finance the whole thing. Just think of me as our very own no-
interest, no APR, no late fee, no penalty, no junk mail credit card.
Alls I expect is to be paid back eventually, on your terms. I know
money is hard to come by and all..especially now that our economy
hath become raven pickings, so I will gladly take a buck or two
whenever you can afford it. Point is I want us to get on this and
start creating our armour so we can beat each other up come fair
weather!

So write me back and place your orders. For reference, a side of
leather will provide approx one suit of armour..or near close to one.
We all saw what 10 gauge can be like once it's water hardened...BUT
it shrinks, and thusly we will need more of it. As such, I propose a
12 or 14 gauge leather to begin with. Though if you want to go the 10
gauge route, let me know!

So that's it, write me back ASAP with your orders, and Next think you
know, We'll be tooling around and making our armour!! And best of
all, we won't have to pee and chew the leather to get it!!

Just thoght it would be nice to have this all formally written down.
Who is your SCA character? If you aren't SCA already (like me) who is
your proposed character? (keep in mind it has to pass through the SCA
and be up to snuff before it it for sure) What did they do, how did
they live, when/where are they from? Tell us all of their great
adventures!

I'll start!

**JP**

My proposed character is Marcial de Salas, a 16 century Spaniard.

Born and raised in Salas Espania until the tender age of 10. That was
when news came of my father's death in the wars. Devastated, my
mother and I travelled westward, to Italia and stay with a relative
in the sacred city of Roma. But it was not to be. We were robbed, and
my mother slain. Alone, I sought refuge in monasteries, relying on
the goodness of townsfolk and monks, learning what I could from the
local peoples, which I repaid with the service of my sword and the
sweat of my brow. This continued as I wandered the countrysides of
Espania, Gaul and Italia, learning from masters of sword and art
alike. It was four years ago that I met a man who took me to the
place I would finally call home once more. He took me to a green land
of beautiful women, hearty men, and flowing uisce beatha. They call
it Eire. Here I have made my home, taken a wife, and raise my child.

My greatest battle, aye, tis one that shall have to be told round a
roaring fire with mead to aid the telling!

Well Tina, I asked and here is the answer I got.

"It is so completely dependant on size, type of armor, etc. Hides run
about $125 or so with shipping right now. They used to be a lot
cheaper. One side is equal to a breastplate, legs, and arms for
someone my size."

For sizing purposes concerning "someone of my size", imagine someone
roughly of Don's stature and physique.

So there is the info for all of you. Start thinking about your armour
and get those requests into me asap.

interest, I'm sure I could create a round with tall snow banks to

warm with a roaring bonfire in the middle of it all, and hot drinks to
keep our bellies and bodies warm. Dunno, just a thought. let me know if

Well, Hollie went ahead and asked a friend of hers, and if you guys
show interest, we have a private field to use on Sunday the 21st! So
yeah, let me know if you're interested. Many a plan has been thought
of such as hot cider, fresh cooked meat-stuffs, etc, etc, etc. Sides,
with the size bonfire we'll have going, we won't soon get cold! The
firewood has already been supplied by Hollie's friend, so that is the
least of our worries. SO yeah, come join us for some fun in the
snow!...the white crud has got to be good for something right?????

Hi Randy,
Miss having you in the group. Yes we are still getting together, here at my house again on Saturday afternoons.  The group numbers fluctuate some new ones here and there.  Also miss Angel, Andy, and Nisa.  Our group is poorer without them.  We sort of have officers now.  We need to get this going as far as contacting Ashland and being semi-official.
Can't believe you have a southern accent even in your writing already.  Glad to hear from you.  Don't be a stranger.

Allrighty group, due to a rather nice show of support for the idea,
the party is in full swing!

It will be held on December 21st, start showing up around 5:00ish! I
nixed the meat idea due to a lack of gold in my manor....but fret
naught, there will still be many a libation and consumable! I'll get
my grubby mitts on some apples and we can roast them (I hear it's
good) as well as some marshmallows for the kids, and mayhaps some
poundcakes!

For drinking, there will be hot cider, and I hope to be able to make
a Mexican drink called Atole which is a thickened milk drink...great
for warming up AND filling up at the same time. Mayhaps some spiced
hot cocoa as well.

There will be at least two games, horse fights and spear tosses,
perhaps I'll be able to scrounge up a few more! If you happen to have
some games to play, please do bring them along!

The shindig will be held at ***E9805 Barber st.*** In bessemer. It's
down Barber st, a little East of Choke Cherry lane. I hope to have
some banners made to make it easily recognisable. :)

Now, my only prob is seating.......anybody able to help or know of
someone who could help?

So there is all the info, see you guys and gals soon!

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner.  Would today work to get the hay?  Also, couldn't we each bring our own meats (sausages, hot dogs<etc) to cook on the fire?  That way the expense is shared.

OK, I HAD written a message before saying that the bonfire was off, but
I deleted it. Now, not knowing whether the group thingy sent out the
notice or not, I'm writing to officially post that

----plans are tentative----

Here's how it's gonna work, If there is any heavy snow tonight or
tomorrow morning, it is off. If the storm misses us, then it is still
on! Sound goot???

OK, IF the storm hits and we cancell tomorrow, let's plan it for next
weekend for sure, k?? Let's hope another storm doesn't hit us then eh?

Sorry for any confusion folks! LEt's hope the storm bypasses us as it
sometimes tends to do.

Hey there gang. I don't know how it is in Ironwood, but over here is it
coming down slowly but steadily. Looks like lake effect has done us in
:(

I woke up with high hopes as we only got 2 odd inches in 12 hours in
Ramsay and it wasn't snowing at all, plus it wasn't even too too cold
due to a lack of wind...but getting here to Bessemer, it looks liek
they have gotten about 3 inches, and it is currently 2 degrees, not
factoring in wind chill. According to the weather channel (which we all
know we can rely on *rolls eyes*) it is supposed to warm up to about 6
degrees and stay there till 9, but that doesn't factor wind chill, and
it says there s (on average) a 90% chance of precipitation.

So yeah folks, plans are off till next week. BUT....as a way of
saying "I'm sorry to let y'all down" and to keep interest kindled...I
shall upload pics of the decorations :D

See you guys down here next Sunday, the 28th

Allrighty folks, the rescheduled party is on for this Sunday (the
28th)!!!

Same place (9805 S Barber, bessemer), same time (5:00 ish, start
showing up!).

So yeah, Let's HOPE AND PRAY that the weather doesn't screwdlie-doodley
us over!! By looks of it we're in for a WARM day and very minimal snow!

SO yeah, BYOB IF you wish to imbibe, and feel free to bring your own
snackables and things of the sort should you feel like adding a bit of
your own flavor into the mix, I shant oppose!

Also, IF you have something against using sticks to roast stuff on,
feel free to bring your own roasting paraphenalia :D

Thankls to Tina, we will have somewhere to sit, though should Haybales
not suit your tastes, go ahead and bring something to park your
keysters on :)

Be well, hope to see you all Sunday!!
