I'm glad to see NE can still see the light. There were many times I'd get home
close to midnight during the Christmas season. I'd come home via Gladstone Blvd.
Sometimes snow would be on the ground and it would really look Christmasy or
whatever the term is. Also, the lights from NKC, etc. would be reflected in the
Missouri River and made a nice dazzling display.
GARRY
If anyone wants to see a funny Christmas movie try to see "Deck the Halls" with Matthew Broderick and Danny De Vito. They get into a feud about who can put the most lights on their house so their house can be seen from space. It is a great family movie. It will probably be on cable somewhere during the couple of weeks so look for it. Or rent it from Netflix.

Absolutly yes! There are a lot of nice displays everywhere. Some of
the nicest are on small inexpensive homes. You can take a nice drive at
night and see a lot of great displays. I don't like the ones that are
all white or all blue or something. I like multi color lights. I don't
have any lights on the dump I live in. All I have is a string of 50
mult color light strung around my living room window.

I have been in the building several times over the past few years and I believe the building is in the best shape it has ever been. During the magnet school craze during the 80's millions of dollars was spent on Northeast including air conditioning, new windows, new library where the old gym was, and modern electrical and lighting work and computers. Also the new gym/ROTC building was built on the south playground. Just because the color scheme is different then when we went there doesn't mean it is worse. I think it looks better. Also, the school spirit has improved greatly and also great improvements in academic achievement have also been made.
The reason they are thinking about closing it is simply money and a smaller number of students. The school district is simply almost broke. I think the future of Northeast can be saved if the powers that be would truly think of the number of new Hispanic families that have moved into Northeast and are here to stay. They are having a lot of children compared to whites. Every time I go to any store in Northeast, Budd Park, or just driving around I see hundreds of very young Hispanic, especially Mexican, children. I believe in five to ten years there will be a huge number of high school age children living in Northeast and they will need a neighborhood high school. The problem is the bureaucrats just think on the short term and what they can do for there own careers and reputations and they will not think of the future.

I don't remember seeing any playground graffiti. But, I always entered the
building from the north side next to the library. I do remember that when NE
alumnus Harry Cloverdyke became a Vice-Principal, that someone wrote an
uncomplimentary message about him on the sidewalk on the north side. I also
remember that starting in Kindergarten, I spent thirteen years going to school
without having to go through a metal detector. I didn't have to worry about
students bringing in guns and drugs. I think we were all fortunate to have
attended school when we did.
GARRY
Ha, ha -- You have a short memory! I remember graffiti all over the play ground and building when Mrs. Jones came to teach.

You hit the nail on the head. The students of today have no respect for school property or getting an education. We would have never thought of defacing the school building and we always respected our teachers.
LARRY:
All I know at this time is that the school district is going to be holding
several public forums to discuss whether to shut down NE or combine it with
another school. The first forum is being held this evening. The reason given is
that the district is having financial problems.

I agree the building itself is solid, but the interior, classrooms, hallways, and lockers need a lot of work. I think the problem is the students today have no respect for the building or anything in it. We would never have dreamed of destroying the statues that were in the hall, but now they've been turned over and broken to pieces. The trophy case broken into and trophies stolen and destroyed. If holes were made in the walls they were repaired right away, or lockers damaged were repaired or replaced. Today the walls have holes, lockers with doors torn off, walls graffitied, and not to mention the terrible color scheme.
I know the district is trying to save money and use its buildings for the best purposes. It would be nice to see the building converted to another use, maybe apartments or office space. Something that would save the historic value and not have kids that only want to tear things up destroy the place.

When we had the school tour in Feb a year or two ago, (time flies when you're having fun) I thought the interior of the school looked very worn, high mileage, if not decrepit. Not at all what I recall from our high school days. The place was 50 years old when we were there and I thought it was very well maintained. Not so as I seen it a year or two ago. Would be interesting to see what they propose to replace it. Just my 2 cents worth

Ok, now, 1st - why are they closing it? 2nd - where will the kids go? Are they going to rebuild? Northeast was decrepit 43 years ago when we were there. MAYBE closing it is a good idea.

Happy Thanksgiving
TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING,
BUT I JUST COULDN'T SLEEP.
I TRIED COUNTING BACKWARDS,
I TRIED COUNTING SHEEP.
THE LEFTOVERS BECKONED -
THE DARK MEAT AND WHITE,
BUT I FOUGHT THE TEMPTATION
WITH ALL OF MY MIGHT.
TOSSING AND TURNING WITH ANTICIPATION,
THE THOUGHT OF A SNACK BECAME INFATUATION.
SO, I RACED TO THE KITCHEN, FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR,
AND GAZED AT THE FRIDGE, FULL OF GOODIES GALORE.
GOBBLED UP TURKEY AND BUTTERED POTATOES,
PICKLES AND CARROTS, BEANS AND TOMATOES.
I FELT MYSELF SWELLING SO PLUMP AND SO ROUND,
'TIL ALL OF A SUDDEN, I ROSE OFF THE GROUND.
I CRASHED THROUGH THE CEILING, FLOATING INTO THE SKY,
WITH A MOUTHFUL OF PUDDING AND A HANDFUL OF PIE.
BUT, I MANAGED TO YELL AS I SOARED PAST THE TREES....
HAPPY EATING TO ALL - PASS THE CRANBERRIES, PLEASE.
MAY YOUR STUFFING BE TASTY,
MAY YOUR TURKEY BE PLUMP.
MAY YOUR POTATOES 'N GRAVY HAVE NARY A LUMP.
MAY YOUR YAMS BE DELICIOUS.
MAY YOUR PIES TAKE THE PRIZE,
MAY YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER STAY OFF OF YOUR THIGHS!!

"N" CLUB MEETING CHANGE... Saturday, November 21st
Coach Steve Schottel, Northeast Athletic Director, has invited the "N" Club to attend Basketball Practice which will be Saturday, Nov. 21st to be held at Northeast High School Gym. Therefore we will not have the "N" Club breakfast meeting at HyVee's in Raytown.
This basketball practice will allow our members and all NEHS Alumni to see the boys and gals in action and also learn more about the way they do things now, instead of the way we practiced many years ago...
Also, we can interact with the team and meet with the kids that attend the Dear Old Northeast which we all love and
have so many fond memories.. Also, we can all see the workout room and the boys and gals locker room..
It has been my pleasure in meeting and shaking hands with these very nice students. I hope all "N" Club and Northeast Alumni will come and bring their spouses.
The Gym is located just south of the High School and can be entered between the school and the gym..
So, come on back to school and wear your Purple and White and have some FUN>>>>

We will tour the Bingham-Waggoner Estate at 313 West Pacific, Independence, Missouri. We will meet in the foyer at 4:30 for the 5:00 p.m. private NEHS Alumni Holiday tour. After the tour, we will slip over to the Carriage House for some hearty snacks. The Bingham-Waggoner Estate and Carriage House will be decked out for the Holidays and each room's decor will have a different theme.
What a terrific way to usher in the Holidays! The tour of the estate is our gift you, our paid members, for being such a great support throughout the year! At this time we will also be "giving back" to our Northeast community by providing a gifts for children through the Salvation Army Christmas Program, Forgotten Angels. At our October meeting many members selected one or more names and we will bring the gifts to our party. Please do not wrap the gifts...just bring them in a brown paper bag (grocery store type) with the label inside and the top stapled securely. The Salvation Army will wrap them for us and they will be distributed to the Northeast area by them as well.
If you would like to be a part of our Holidays and are not yet a member, you can help in a couple of ways. You can contact me for a child's name and I will mail it to you and we can arrange to get it to one of us...or better yet, why not become a member and really get involved in all of our activities all year long and come join in our Christmas plans this year! We are a fun group and it would only be more fun with YOU there with us!
We do need reservations, so please e-mail your reservations to me by November 21st.

MESSAGE FROM IRAQ !!!
We received an email today in response to the email sent yesterday on Veterans Day. Larry Myers, a soldier serving in Iraq is a NE Graduate from the class of 1971. He receives the e-Newsletters we send out and sent the message below to Jerry Slavens '48, "N" Club Chairman and all Alumni.
We are so thankful and proud of those who dedicate their lives to help keep our country safe and to help others gain their freedom.
Thank you so much for thinking of me and my fellow servicemen/women and veterans such as many are included in this e-mail. We owe a great debt to you and those of your generation for making the military and our country the greatest in the world and has ever known to mankind. The support of folks back home like yourselves make us proud to serve.
We had a day off while we have a day on. If you can understand what I mean (smile). A special thanks to you and the N-Club for keeping me posted on the Vikings football season. I take it, it was exciting football to watch and a foundation is built for exciting football in years to come. Man, it's great to see the Viking spirit pumped back into the school. We go on missions and we talk about our younger years, especially high school; since many of the soliders and airman on our team are much younger than us grey beards.
To give you all a snap shot of what's going on over here; you can be proud of the US Armed Forces and US State Department. We have turned the corner from a military occupation mission to a humanitarian mission. As you know, as of 30 June, we have turned over the security of the nation to the Iraqi Government. The State Department as the lead and the military are in a support role. We (the US) are completing these humanitarian missions with provincial reconstruction teams (PRT) and there are 16 teams thru-out the country. I've been assigned to the Muthanna PRT. Muthanna is located in southern Iraq. As the Viking football team learned this year, we too need each person on the team to do their job in order for the mission to be a success. We are building schools, community buildings, government office buildings, roads, providing water purification units in the villages and cities to bring clean water to the people of the Muthanna Province.
Muthanna suffers from decaying infrastructure and a weak economy. But violence in this religiously homogenous province is rare and markets are well-stocked. Its roots are in the tribes of the desert, and they provide an auxiliary justice system that contributes to stability and social cohesion, especially in rural areas. Electricity, education, water and sewage systems remain problematic, but the fuel crisis of January has ceased.
Though second largest in area, Muthanna is a sparsely populated province that consists of agricultural land adjacent to the Euphrates along with vast expanses of desert. Its urban core has government facilities and services, but life in the outlying areas is strongly influenced by tribal customs. Throughout the province almost all women wear the hijab and abaya, and women generally do not venture outside the home without a family member; the culture is socially conservative. Muthanna is arguably the safest majority-Arab province in Iraq, and the cafes full of men in the evenings attest to its strong social networks and the freedom of its citizens to assemble peacefully. We're doing some good things over here (that you can be proud we're looking after the US taxpayer hard earned dollars).
Well, I better run. I plan on being home for R&R during the Thanksgiving Day holiday for a few days and then back to the ole grind stone (smile). Again, thank you for taking time to send the greeting and thank you for your prayers and thoughts for all the men and women over here in Iraq as well as Afghanistan. We appreciate all that you do for us.
God Bless.
Very Respectfully, Larry "Essayons" Myers

Message From The AD...
Hey All You Vikings,
Three Teams Share The 2009 Interscholastic League Football Championship.
With four schools competing for the championship, the 2009 football season ended with three schools - the Lincoln Prep Blue Tigers, the Northeast Vikings and the Westport Tigers - sharing the league championship with a 2-1 record. It was a remarkable improvement for the Vikings, who in 2008 ended their season with a 1-9 record. Northeast started the season off with a new head coach, Kimble Anders, who, after the second game of the season and getting his first career head coaching win, moved on to become athletic director for the Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD). Elvis Patterson, Anders' assistant coach, was promoted to the head coaching position and utilizing his talent, continued to win as the season has progressed. Congratulations to the Football Team and Coaches... We're Proud Of You !!!!
Northeast Wins the 2009 Cross-Country Championship
For the 2nd year in a row, the Cross Country Team won the Cross Country Championship. Along with that, Coach Bill Kanan '74 (Almni Board Member) was chosen Coach of The Year for the 2nd year in a row !!! Congratulations To Bill and the Cross-Country Team.... Way To Go !!!
We want to thank you and all the "Past Northeast Letter Winners" for your efforts to help the Viking Sports Teams with contributions, interaction, and attendence at events. I would like you to please add Ms. Linda Collins, Principal and "The Captain of Viking Ship", to your "N" club membership list . All your efforts for the kids at NEHS are greatly appreciated. Anything we can do to assist your efforts, just let us know.
Basketball season is fast approaching. Check the alumni website for the schedule.
Alumni.... This is a great opportunity to have some fun--see some of your former classmates as well as some of the students and parents.
Remember its not about the ball--it's about the kids! The Viking Cheerleaders and Victor E. Viking will be leading the cheers.
