Re: [VikingCrash1948] Devon remains (from the air)

Hi Bill

Welcome to the group and thanks for your post.  Some great shots there which I hadn't seen before.  Google Earth and Geograph are two very useful sites and I usually try to keep up to date with the latter at least.

The website you mention is run by Gordon Lyons who is a member of this group.  Lots of interesting information can be found in the vast site.

Best wishes,
James

Subject: [VikingCrash1948] Devon remains (from the air)

Hi,

My first post here.

Some time ago I saw a photograph on Google Earth of the Devon crash
remains. I noted the co-ordinates and yesterday a friend and I visited
the site.

Strangely, the picture has been removed from GE.

I have put a few pictures in the photo folder under Box Law Wreckage.

I also found the following info at
http://www.aircrashsites-scotland.co.uk/de_havilland_devon.htm
Which you may well know about already.

Bill

Registration or Serial: VP969

Operator: Royal Air Force (RAF Transport Command / Maintenance Command)

De Havilland Devon
Aircraft Type & Background

A military (non-combat) aircraft operated by the Royal Air Force.

Attached to 45 Group RAF Maintenance Command Communications Squadron,
this aircraft was assigned for the personal use of Air Marshall Sir
Richard Jordan, who was C-in-C of Maintenance Command.*

Aircraft Accident Details

At the time of the accident, the aircraft had been flying from the
Isle of Man to Renfrew (possibly, the former military airfield at
Abbotsinch). At Renfrew, it was to collect passengers bound for the
former RAF Andover airfield, which was a Royal Flying Corps and Royal
Air Force base station. However, while flying over the Largs hills,
the aircraft encountered turbulence and crashed just below Box Law.
The pilot, Flt/Lt Barney Barclay, survived the impact.
