Pet Food Pantry - Pennsauken, NJ

Thanks to the generosity of Supporters of Almost Home Animal Shelter,
a small food pantry is now available. If you or someone you know is having
financial difficulty, Almost Home has both dog and cat food available to help
feed pets in need. You can stop in and pick up dog and/or cat food during our
business hours.

If your pet is on a special diet or you need a specific brand, please call the
shelter and we can tell you if we have it. (856) 663-3058

Our goal is to help pets stay in their happy homes rather than have them be
surrendered to the shelter. Hoping to cut down on everyone's stress level. The
pet owner, the pets and even the staff and volunteers at the shelter. When pets
have to be surrendered the staff and volunteers at the shelter feel bad too and
want to help keep that from happening if we can.

ACUA along with Go Green Galloway and with the support of the South Jersey

TEDxManhattan video broadcast of "Changing the Way We Eat."

Join us at the Geo Building (Bldg #1) at ACUA's Environmental Park in Egg Harbor

our food system — from what happened, to where we are, to what we are doing to
shift to a more sustainable way of eating and farming." The goal of "Changing
the Way We Eat" is to create new synergies, connections and collaborations
across disciplines, to unite different areas of the food movement and to
introduce the TEDx audience to the exciting and innovative work being done in
this field."

The viewing party is an informal gathering - you are welcome to come for the
whole day, or just to stop in to catch a part of it! A great variety of
fantastic speakers will be broadcast all day, and during the breaks, there will
be opportunities for discussion and to share information on local organizations

Spice up this Valentine's Day with some special vegan treats!

Valentine's Day evokes thoughts of something unusual and exotic. Food with spice
and decadent chocolate, represents the holiday of love.

For tips on throwing a party whether it be for two or ten check out Vegans Know
How to Party by Nancy Berkoff. She gives great party advice, sample menus, and
recipes from drinks to desserts and everything in between.

Some entree recipes that follow the standards of unusual include a "Spicy
Mandarin Chickpea" recipe from Conveniently Vegan and a "Sweet Indian Rice with
Carrots and Dates" from Vegan Meals for One or Two. These recipes are not only
exotic with spices and unique ingredients but are also quick and easy.

No other dessert better represents Valentine's Day than chocolate cake. In the
book Vegans Know How to Party the recipe for "Moist Chocolate Cake" is a winner.
To keep the decadence flowing finish off this chocolate cake with a "Vegan
Caramel Sauce" from Vegans Know How to Party. And for those non-chocolate lovers
or those short on time use the vegan caramel sauce recipe and a "Cream Cheese
Spread with Fruit" recipe from the same book to turn up the romance. How do you
go about pushing the love level into overdrive? Use these sauce and spread
recipes as dips for fresh fruit and you and your significant other can practice
the art of love by feeding each other. So whether you have plenty of time or are
short on time and whether you are cooking for two or six, spice up this
Valentine's Day with some special vegan treats!

Delicious Vegan Puddings, Cheese & Dips, Sour Cream, and Bacon Bits

Hi Folks -

I was shopping at Natural Health in Clementon, NJ, a couple of weeks ago and I
saw a container of Wayfare Butterscotch Pudding. I had never seen that brand
before, so I bought some. It was delicious. I went online and found the Wayfare
web page and got really excited. I went back to Natural Health to see if they
had any other pudding flavors or the cheese spreads or dips and they had vanilla
& chocolate puddings. They said they had carried the cheeses but the products
hadn't sold well so they stopped carrying them. I bought the chocolate & vanilla
puddings and they were as good as the butterscotch.

The Wayfare web page said that Wegmans in Cherry Hill & Mt. Laurel and Whole
Foods in Marlton carried the products, but none of the stores had ever heard of
the company.

I got in touch with the people at Wayfare and here's the message I got. I called
and I'm having some of the cheeses and the sour cream sent to my house. I also
found the Pig Out bacon bits on Amazon and they arrived today. Great flavor!

Anyway, I wanted you to know about this company and their products. Delicious,
vegan, gluten free. Spread the word.

NJ - Author Carol J. Adams to Discuss Vegetarianism & Feminism at GCU

Adams to Discuss Bestselling Book The Sexual Politics of Meat

Lakewood, N.J., Feb. 14, 2012
Explore the world of veganism with author Carol J. Adams, who will discuss her
bestselling 1990 book The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian
Critical Theory and give a challenging presentation on Monday, February 27, at
6:30 p.m. at Georgian Court University's Little Theatre on the Lakewood campus.
Admission is free, but reservations are required by calling 732.987.2263 or
e-mailing specialevents@ georgian. edu.

The Sexual Politics of Meat explores a relationship between patriarchal values
and meat eating by interweaving the insights of feminism, vegetarianism, animal
defense and literacy theory. When the book first appeared in 1990, Library
Journal called it an important and provocative work and predicted it would
inspire and engage readers across the political spectrum. The book was hailed by
CHOICE as a bible for feminist and progressive animal rights activists" and was
equally reviled by
conservative commentators.

Ms. Adams will discuss sexualized fragmentation, how animals are
feminized/sexualize d, and connect flesh eating and other forms of animal
oppression to prostitution and pornography. She will present images of women and
animals in contemporary popular culture and explore an eco-feminist analysis of
the interconnected oppressions of sexism, racism, and species-ism that permeates
popular culture through images of race, gender, and species.

Ms. Adams has been an activist on antiviolence issues since the 1970s. After
receiving her Master of Divinity degree from Yale University Divinity School in
1976, she co-founded a hotline for battered women in Chautauqua County, New
York. During that time, she was the executive director of the Chautauqua County
Rural Ministry Inc., in Dunkirk, New York, an advocacy and service
not-for-profit agency addressing issues of poverty, racism, and sexism. She is
the author or editor of many other books on the topics of feminism,
vegetarianism, violence, women, and animals, including Speaking Up for Animals:
An Anthology of Womens Voices (2011), co-edited with Lisa Kemmerer, and How to
Eat Like a Vegetarian Even If You Never Want to Be One: More Than 250 Shortcuts,
Strategies, and Simple Solutions (2008), co-authored with Patti Breitman.

Founded in 1908 and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Georgian Court University
is a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts core and a special
concern for women. A forward-thinking university that supports diversity and
academic excellence, Georgian Court serves more than 2,500 students of all
faiths and backgrounds in a residential Women's College and a coeducational
University College with undergraduate and graduate programs. Georgian Court's
main campus is located at 900 Lakewood Avenue, Lakewood, N.J., on the
picturesque former George Jay Gould estate, now named a National Historic
Landmark. Georgian Court also offers classes at its site at One Woodbridge
Center in Woodbridge, at Coastal Communiversity in Wall, and at Cumberland
County College in Vineland.

Philadelphia Screening of the Film "Vegucated"

Sunday, April 22, 2012, 2:00 PM

The Rotunda
4014 Walnut St, Philadelphia, PA

Vegucated is a feature-length documentary that follows three meat and cheese
loving New Yorkers who agree to adopt a vegan diet for six weeks. There's Brian,
the bacon-loving bachelor who eats out all the time, Ellen, the single mom who
prefers comedy to cooking, and Tesla, the college student who avoids vegetables
and bans beans. They have no idea that so much more than steak is at stake and
that the fate of the world may fall on their plates. Lured with true tales of
weight lost and health regained, they begin to uncover hidden sides of animal
agriculture and soon start to wonder whether solutions offered in films like
Food, Inc.go far enough. Before long, they find themselves risking everything to
expose an industry they supported just weeks before.
But can their conviction carry them when times get tough? What about on family
vacations fraught with skeptical step-dads, carnivorous cousins, and breakfast
buffets?

Watch the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKzng1_byMY

In addition, free tasty vegan snacks will be available, and there will be local
animal rights groups with tables full of information on adopting a cruelty free
vegan life style.

Suggested donation for admission for already-vegans is $5.00 but FREE if you
bring a non-vegan!

Earth Day talks on livestock's impact on the environment - 4/18 - Lincroft, NJ

April 18, 2012 Earth Day Event

Mike Hudak of the Sierra Club's National Grazing Team will speak on "Liberating
Western Wildlife from Scourge of Ranching."
Doris Lin will also give a brief presentation on "How Animal Agriculture
Destroys the Environment. "

Co-Sponsored by Animal Protection League of NJ, NJ Chapter of the Sierra Club,
Transition Red Bank.
This event is FREE and open to the public! Light vegan refreshments will be
served.

Mike Explains:

The grazing of domestic livestock has arguably been the most destructive land
use the world has seen. Already two millennia ago, large regions of the Middle
and Near East, and other lands encircling the Mediterranean Sea had been
desertified by grazing. In the 17th century, Spaniards brought livestock to the
New World, and in the mid 19th century, western cattle barons began big-time
ranching to satisfy British and bi-coastal desire for beef. As a result, today's
western lands, amounting to hundreds of millions of acres, have had their plant
productivity greatly reduced. That loss of forage and cover has led to
population declines for hundreds of species of free-living animals, many now on
the federal threatened and endangered lists. Adding insult to injury, American
taxpayers are forced to annually subsidize the federal grazing program by at
least $450 million.

The only good news is that because much of these western lands are under federal
control, all Americans, through their elected officials, can have a say in how
they're managed.

In this presentation, I'll survey the environmental damage inflicted by ranching
across the American West. Then we'll examine the social and political contexts
within which we must mount any campaign intended to reduce the scope of western
ranching. Finally, we'll discuss current federal legislation that would reduce
such ranching by facilitating the permanent closure of federal grazing
allotments.

About Mike:
Mike Hudak is a former computer-industry researcher who has advocated for
protecting public lands from ranching since 1998. Beginning in that year, he led
a 2-year campaign within the Sierra Club to oppose ranching on public lands that
culminated in a significant strengthening of the Club's grazing policy. In the
early 2000s, through numerous public presentations across the eastern U.S., he
built grassroots and organizational support for federal legislation that would
have facilitated the permanent closure of federal grazing allotments. He's the
author of Western Turf Wars, a book that exposes the politics behind the
mismanagement of ranching on public lands. And he's produced a companion video
series to the book that can be viewed on YouTube and other websites. His
non-profit project, Vibrant Public Lands (formerly Public Lands Without
Livestock), informs the public about the environmental harms and cost overruns
of the federal grazing program. Also, since 2008, Mike has chaired the Sierra
Club's National Grazing Team, in which capacity he directed a successful 3-year
effort to reintroduce grazing retirement legislation in the U.S. Congress.

About Doris:
Doris Lin, Esq. is the About.com Guide to animal rights and an animal rights
attorney. She is the Director of Legal Services for the Animal Protection League
of NJ and the Vice President of Legal Affairs for the BEAR Group. She is also a
former paralegal for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and former chair
of the NJ State Bar Association' s Animal Law Committee. Doris holds a B.S. in
Applied Biological Sciences from MIT and a JD from the University of Southern
California.
