Originally VeganUK was started for two reasons - that practically all existing vegan mailing lists were dominated by topics only relevant to the US and to be a place for vegans to talk freely. All too many lists seem to only welcome talking about a particular subject and nothing else, VeganUK though is somewhere that vegans in the UK (although members from other countries are welcome too) can form an online community. Where they can be themselves and talk about what interests them, whether related to veganism or not, as well as share useful information in a friendly and supportive environment.

Due to the incompatible aims of both providing a supportive environment and allowing certain members to be themselves, on March 14th, 2002 VeganUK split into two groups. The existing list continues as VegansUncensored where people may continue to talk in an unrestrained manner while this new VeganUK community allows for a more welcoming and non judgmental atmosphere which should be more supportive of the needs of vegans.
