Subject: New TS-590S HOWTO: Digital QuickStart

Send Email Send Email

When writing my SSB Audio Handling TechNote recently, I wanted to check
out some of the more well-known digital communications packages to make
sure they worked as expected. I made some brief configuration notes as I
went along, and I have now put these notes into a new HOWTO.

Go to the TS-590S Resources Page:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wadei/ts-590s.htm

Scroll down to the "HOWTOs" section, then click on the link:

"TS-590S HOWTO: Digital QuickStart"

The notes for each package are very brief, but hopefully just enough to
get started.

I have posted a new TS-590 HOWTO on Remote Operation. Go to the TS-590
Resources Page:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wadei/ts-590s.htm

Scroll down to the end of the "HOWTOs" section, then click on the link:

"*** TS-590S HOWTO: Remote Operation".

The HOWTO has full details on setting up the TS-590S for remote
operation over the internet, using Skype and TeamViewer.

The twist? The HOWTO also describes the capability of the TS-590S to
send monitored sidetone audio along the same path as the RX audio. This
means that from the comfort of your local PC you can listen to the
radio’s TX Monitor, letting you check and adjust the quality of the TX
audio in (more or less) real time -- no more guessing how your signal
might sound thousands of miles away!

It seems that the original version of the TS-590S Digital QuickStart was
just a little too quick for some people! So I have now considerably
expanded it.

The main changes include:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*  Added explanation of VOX and CAT TX keying
*  Added MixW configuration details
*  Added VOX setup details for several packages
*  Added requirement for Fldigi TS-590S XML file
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks to everyone who contributed useful feedback.

The QuickStart is accessible through the TS-590S Resources Page:

Interest in V4 seems to have waned. There was a lot of activity last summer but
now, every time I listen on 14073, there are no V4 QSOs.

Consider using K3UK's SKED page if you are listening on 14073.

All,

I have been working on some enhancements for improved senitivity and robustness
using some new DSP code (Square Wave correlation).

This new version also includes support for the newer radios with built in sound
cards/interfaces like the TS-590S or the IC-7200 or IC-7600.

I have posted the full install on the V4 group web site along with an auto
update from version 1.0.1.0. Your settings should not be lost with a new
install.

I will be avaialble this week for testing on 40 meters, 30 meters, 20 meters,
and 17 meters.

Hi Rick,

I have a Kenwood TS-590 radio and I am using V4 Chat version 1.0.2.0.
In the radio setup I have USB Data selected. When the program switches
frequency it will also switch the radio's mode to FSK instead of USB
Data. When I select USB the radio will switch to USB then I have to
manually select Data mode on the radio. Is this because the program is
sending the wrong command to the radio.

Hello V4 Group,
I was wondering if someone might post a fresh list of frequencies to try v4?
I have only made one contact on 14.073.
Really a nice program, great possibilites for ARES vital communications.

Thank you,
Leo Yudysky

It is working great from this end<INDIANA> although 14.073 seems to be the
testing frequency for all digital modes and the North American tuner club
frequency. I have been on 14.072.5 a few times and have made contacts there
also.
Great job RICK...see the V4 ops on 20 or band chosen..

Ron,
I probably missed something. I used code from another application for the TS-590S.  It should be USB digital and it also has to switch the internal mux from Aux to USB sound card input to the radio.  I’ll check it out ...may be a day or two. I have a TS-590 here just not currently setup.

Thanks Rick,

The new version works great with the TS-590.  I am now using a serial cable for rig control and PTT control and the USB port only for sound.  I am getting TR Latency about 40 to 70 ms and the CW ID keying mode sounds much better than the modulated mode.

Ron,

I found several problems in the code for the TS-590S (a result of not checking the patched in code from another project!) There were also several errors in the Help for the setup.  I have it running fine now here on my TS-590S.  There is no need for a serial cable for PTT control ...the new code will correctly control the PTT though the normal USB port and set the internal mux of the TS-590S to select the USB sound card output as well as put the radio into the correct mode of USB Data.  I will get an update out for this tomorrow along with the updated help.

Thanks to all those that reported the problems with the 1.0.2.0 update (Radio driver for the TS-590S and help).  I have fixed these and verified operation here on a test TS-590S.  The Help is also updated to support the IC-7200, IC-7600 and TS-590S.  The latest V4 TNC version is still 1.0.2.0.

The full install has been uploaded to the Yahoo V4Protocol server files session and the Winlink user programs download FTP ftp://autoupdate.winlink.org/User%20Programs/  (refresh your browser window if you don’t see the V4 Chat 1.0.3.0 full install)
