After V4Chat advanced from version .5.1.9 to .5.2.x.x the software has performed flawlessly on an old FT900 Yaesu.  My latency averages from 17 to 80.  It's a sweet little program and works great for long-winded ragchew sessions.  If anything is going to be the problem, it will more than likely be too slow of a keying relay.  When you are calling CQ, pay close attention to what the latency is reading.  The help files suggest that a latency less than 250ms.  20 meters is a fairly good place to hang out on 14,073 and 14,074 during daylight hours as long as there are not any weekend contests.  I  have had several 45 minute qsos on V4Chat with hardly any repeats.  This mode along with ALE400 are making for some nice long-winded keyboard chats.  Whatever you do, do not give up on V4Chat because one you get some good band condtions, you will  have trouble find frequency space to squeak i n a contact.

I'll be listening on and off throught  daylight hours on 14073 during the weekends.

Subject: [V4Protocol] How about a YouTube demo?

Has one been done? I've "connected" with stations but neither of us actually exchanged any messages. Seems simple for those who already know, but I don't know if I'm missing a step or if the connection is too poor to proceed. I've had similar experiences with the ALE system (can connect but the link eventually times out...unable to proceed further). I've been told that was due to slow switching of my TenTec Argonaut V, that my computer is too slow, etc. etc.

Anyhow, a quick YouTube video would clear up some of these issues.

Almost any modern computer and radio should run V4CHat and the V4 TNC.  Slow “switching” is almost always caused by:
1) SignaLink USB or similar sound card/interface with the DLY set too long.  Should ALWAYS be set to minimum for V4 and WINMOR
2) Using your radio’s VOX with its Delay or “Hold” control set too high. Again set to minimum as the help file describes.

The Latency is automatically measured by the program when you call a CQ or other station.  Any latency measurement under 250 ms will be fine.

Many newcomers to V4 are not familiar with ARQ modes and how the “link” is turned over.  Its fairly simple and described in the V4 Chat help.

I will always try and answer questions but I am pretty swamped right now on another project. Hopefully will have time this summer to work on some V4 enahancements.

The Kenwood TS480 has a vox delay.  Push in the keyboard number 6.  Set the vox delay to zero.  I was surprised to learn that the vox delay works for digital modes, and also is handy for sending c.w. using my amplifier.  For other digi software that has an RSID, you will probably have to re-set the vox delay as there is a little break in the transmission before the text starts up.

Subject: [V4Protocol] ARQ timeout ???

Greetings,

Some months ago I tried my luck with V4 on Kenwood 480, but results of T/R latency measurements were not satisfactory. Now I try on a different radio (ICOM 703) and different computer, using G4ZLP interface. My attempts to call ARQ CQ end after 6 transmit cycles with the following message:

DISCONNECTED ARQ Timeout. Outbound buffer purged at <timestamp here>

What the heck? Radio or computer too slow? I was unable to find meaning of the message in help file. Does anybody know why I got it?

Just had my first V4 ARQ QSO with NR5G on 14.072 (Thanks Lee!) and things went
pretty well in spite of my cockpit errors. I haven't had so much fun since I
used AMTOR in the 80's.
This is a very slick program..

I have a few questions though..

1. How do I get QSO's into the log?
2. I've configured the radio control for my TS-2000, but it doesn't seem to make
any difference in the operation of the program.. I know the COM port works as I
use it for other programs such as HRD, AirLink, MMSSTV, etc., and it works
fine.. I have it set for radio control on one COM port and PTT on another.
3. I know 14.073 and 21.073 are two common frequencies, but how about the other
bands?

A couple of suggestions,
1. Can the waterfall/tuning display be made larger? It's a little too hard to
see on my current screen resolution.
2. It seems like the ARQ CQ only sends 5 CQ messages, could that be adjutable to
a larger number of tries? This would help for getting the mode going where one
could just set it to CQ for a longer period of time without needing so much
human intervention.

All in all, I'm really looking forward to using this mode a lot more. Thanks for
a really cool and easy to use program!

Bill,
Thanks for your feedback.
I will try and answer some of your questions. The program has been pretty stable for the past several months and I am still currently tied up on some other tasks unless there are serious problems or issues.

1) Every QSO should go into the ADIF log. If you need an ADIF log viewer there are some recommended in the Help file.

2) The TS-2000 should work but mine is currently tied up so I can’t verify here.  How are you keying the TS-2000. There have been reports of problems of using program PTT (via the control port) with the TS-2000.

3) We use this reflector to co ordinate “watering hole” frequencies.  I would suggest posting to the reflector when you are going to be operating and choose a frequency in the digital band segment (not in the wide band auto forward segment) and posting on the reflector.

4) The waterfall is a fixed size so it matches (Pixel for FFT frequency bin) the program to minimize CPU loading. It would be complex and cause artifacts to allow it to be scaled. There is no need to tune precisely as with other modes. If you are within about a hundred Hz V4 will auto tune. You can increase the auto tuning range from +/- 100 Hz to +/- 200 Hz in the setup menu.

5) The CQ length is currently fixed as a good compromise between getting a connection and causing unnecessary interference.  I can look into making it variable if others believe that is a useful thing.  The program however is designed to be “manned” and not run unattended.

Thanks again for the feedback. I hope to have some time this summer to crank in some more capability and improve the performance of the V4 Protocol.

Rick KN6KB

TS-590S TechNote: SSB Audio Handling v1.0
=================================

I have posted a new TS-590S TechNote on the TS-590S Resources Page.

The aims of the TechNote are:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-- To summarize the many features built into the TS-590S for handling
SSB audio.
-- To dispel some of the myths and misunderstandings arising from
Kenwood's inappropriate use of the word "DATA" in its documentation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Emphasis is on the *functionality* of the TS-590S, describing what the
radio does, rather than how to operate it. For the most part, this
document is not a HOWTO (although it does include step-by-step
instructions for setting up TX and RX audio equalizer profiles using the
ARCP-590 control program).

The TechNote also includes detailed information on how TX keying works,
insofar as how it determines which audio input the radio uses when
transmitting.

The document is a long one: 28 pages. Please take the time to read it
thoroughly. It should present a consistent picture of how this wonderful
radio works, and will hopefully clear up some of the misconceptions that
have appeared on the reflectors from time to time.

I must acknowledge the people who reviewed early drafts of the document:
Steve London (N2IC), Frank Riley (KK0K), Don Snodgrass (KG9OM), Rob
Stampfli (KD8WK), Joe Subich (W4TV) and Jose Maria Trueba (EA2JX). Their
contributions helped me turn the very rough first draft into something
much more readable. Many thanks gentlemen!

Wade,

Than you ...I’ll try and read this in detail. It is something I have been looking for. It’s a shame such potential radios as the TS-590 and IC 7200 with built in sound card capability are not well documented by their manufacturers.

Ian,

I just had a chance to start reading the above document. EXCELLENT job on a much needed document.  I will take some time and try and read through it all today .... I may have a question or two that would help me right the correct driver for the radio.

In general what do you think of the TS-590 and have you compared it to the Icom 7200? We have had access to a IC-7200 for a while and it works well with the built in sound card (though I have to say the Icom documentation for that is next to nothing)... It seems almost like they (Icom...I think Kenwood is better) don’t really quite understand (or at least promote) the value that these radios offer in terms of simple connections and minimizing RF contamination of the audio.  I am trying to obtain a TS-590 that we can use for testing in WL2K and I think we can handle it from some of our corporate donors (www.arsfi.org )

One thing I would be interested in too is if you have made any measurements (they aren’t easy to measure) of the sample rate accuracy of the built in sound card.  I suspect Kenwood and Icom are using a generic USB CODEC sound chip and many of these are designed to use a cheap xtal oscillator which is often not too accurate (or particularly stable)  My tests on several low cost “USB plug in sound cards” showed a range of +/- 2000 ppm and sometimes worse. But the average was usually better say +/- 200-400 ppm.   Strangely (I think it is a function of how the sound card chip creates the sample time base (or decimates the samples) the accuracy varies widely on the same chip/sound card depending on the sample rate. For example we found the “cardinal” sample rates of 12000, 48000, 96000 and 192000 were most accurate (typically +/- 400 ppm) but the other rates like 8000, 11025, 22050 and 44100 were sometimes much worse (up to +/- 8000 ppm in some cases).  The SignaLink USB fell into this category and was one reason I changed the initial sample rate in WINMOR which was 8000 initially to 48000/12000.   While such errors go almost unnoticed in things like voice for some DSP work like multi carrier PSK decoding they cause very big problems and can take a lot of CPU resources to correct especially over a wide audio bandwidth using multiple “carriers”.  To put in perspective the SCS modems (great but costly!) have a master time base in the +/- 10 ppm range...There is a reason they went to that trouble and expense.

I have been keeping up with (and making occasional contributions to) the work on a open source Voice codec (good voice quality at about 1200 bits/sec and 1500 Hz bandwidth). This is being done by David Rowe in Australia and it would be a perfect fit for a radio like the TS-590.  David has achieved better performance than the proprietary CODEC used in the D-Star radios and I think will soon have the matching HF Modem ready for initial beta testing.

Again great work on the much needed document and thanks for providing it!

Hello rick

Keep us informed when a beta test version of the codec (and front-end fort

My thoughts on the TS-590S tally very closely with most of the reviews
on Eham -- in other words, I am extremely happy with it all round (but
especially the receiver, which is outstanding for a radio in this price
bracket). I have no experience of the IC-7200, so I can't offer any
comparison.

No, I haven't made any detailed sample rate accuracy measurements with
the TS-590S or PC sound cards. That is something I want to look at in
more detail. I have not played much with low-level signals or multiple
carrier signals on this radio, where sampling accuracy can obviously
make quite a difference.

The TS-590S uses the PCM2903B stereo audio CODEC:

The whole world is very much looking forward to this!

Finally, all your comments are most interesting -- sorry I can't add
much to them.

Thanks Ian,

If I recall there is a fairly simple utility in Mix W that does a fair job of estimating Sound card sample rate. It uses the internal clock of the PC To calculate sound card sample rate over many thousand samples to get some form of a long term average.  I guess the typical reference clock (time of day clock) in the PC is more accurate than typical sound card sample rate clocks and you get fairly repeatable results with this utility. Its probably not as good as using WWV or precision references but  its easy to use and set up.  I’ll try and run some tests on the 7200 later in the week.

When I open up my signalink it has a PCM2904 in it. I have looked at both the
PCM2903a and PCM2904 spec sheets and the only differences I see is one works and
3.3 volts and one works at 5 volts.
Rick if you were to port the 590 to the trimode you would need toggle menu 63 to
the port you wanted to transmit on acc for pactor and usb for winmor. You would
also have to have menu 69 on for data vox for winmor to work. You could also
get into the filters also. I have RMSE working on both Winmor internal sound
card and Pactor with a SCS ProII on the acc port the will both receive at the
same time. Winmor works great on the 590.(V4 also!!!)

When writing my SSB Audio Handling TechNote recently, I wanted to check
out some of the more well-known digital communications packages to make
sure they worked as expected. I made some brief configuration notes as I
went along, and I have now put these notes into a new HOWTO.

Go to the TS-590S Resources Page:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wadei/ts-590s.htm

Scroll down to the "HOWTOs" section, then click on the link:

"TS-590S HOWTO: Digital QuickStart"

The notes for each package are very brief, but hopefully just enough to
get started.

I have posted a new TS-590 HOWTO on Remote Operation. Go to the TS-590
Resources Page:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wadei/ts-590s.htm

Scroll down to the end of the "HOWTOs" section, then click on the link:

"*** TS-590S HOWTO: Remote Operation".

The HOWTO has full details on setting up the TS-590S for remote
operation over the internet, using Skype and TeamViewer.

The twist? The HOWTO also describes the capability of the TS-590S to
send monitored sidetone audio along the same path as the RX audio. This
means that from the comfort of your local PC you can listen to the
radio’s TX Monitor, letting you check and adjust the quality of the TX
audio in (more or less) real time -- no more guessing how your signal
might sound thousands of miles away!

It seems that the original version of the TS-590S Digital QuickStart was
just a little too quick for some people! So I have now considerably
expanded it.

The main changes include:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*  Added explanation of VOX and CAT TX keying
*  Added MixW configuration details
*  Added VOX setup details for several packages
*  Added requirement for Fldigi TS-590S XML file
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thanks to everyone who contributed useful feedback.

The QuickStart is accessible through the TS-590S Resources Page:
