In our planning meeting last Fall, I suggested her as a possible lecturer after attending her class at the BYU Conference last Summer.  I was asked to contact her—her name is Leslie Albrecht Huber, not Peggy Huber.  She was unable to come in November and hoped to find another date to address our group. I sent that information to Crista Cowan and the Group last year but another date wasn’t available.  She gave a presentation on her book, The Journey Takers, at the Provo Library this Spring when she was unable to reschedule a presentation with us.

Unfortunately, I will probably miss the November meeting as I’ll be in AZ that week spending time with our grandchildren.  I hope to meet with all of you again soon.

I'm conflicted.  I see you've moved the Nov mtg to the same night as the UGA Virtual Chapter.  So.... I guess the topic/speaker may pull me one way or the other.  Sorry.

Thanks for straightening us out Judy!  Please offer our apologies to Leslie that a time didn’t work out for her to meet with us this year. Perhaps we could arrange a future time.

It looks like we will need to find another topic for November.  I’m open to suggestions!

Our Utah Valley APG meeting has been moved to next Thursday, November 17 because
of Thanksgiving. We will meet in the usual place at the Harold B. Lee Library,

Hello Utah Valley APGers!

I need your input on communications for our Chapter. We have created a UVAPG
Facebook page, Facebook group, and Twitter account (linked to the Facebook page)
as a means of reaching out to more genealogy professionals in and around Utah
Valley. Initially I had considered phasing out this UVAPG Yahoo! group and
email in favor of using Facebook. However, I am finding some limitations with
the Facebook format. For one thing, it does not support the uploading of files
(other than photos and videos), which makes it kind of hard for us to share such
things as a speaker's PowerPoint presentation (with permission), or to post our
bylaws, etc.

Another issue is that not everyone has joined the Facebook group yet
(http://www.facebook.com/groups/uvapg). Several of you have, but not everyone
in this Yahoo! email list. I wonder if not everyone is aware of it, or if some
of you prefer not to use the Facebook format.

The upside of Facebook is that it is very accessible and well known. An
immediate benefit to adding the pages is that we have been able to make contact
with more than a dozen people (so far) who are not already members of this
Yahoo! group, but who found us on Facebook.

This Yahoo! group has its own limitations. For one thing, for anyone to join,
they have to create a Yahoo! account, something not everyone wants to do. Also,
Yahoo! Groups are not as easy to find or to add people to as in Facebook. And
it is harder to maintain a public facing aspect of the group to draw people in
than it is on Facebook. Yahoo! Groups just aren't that visible. A more serious
potential concern is that Yahoo! has not supported any upgrades to their groups
feature for some time. The interface has remained the same for years. And if
you go to Yahoo! homepage, groups is not even among the main links. One wonders
how long Yahoo! will continue to maintain this feature. The decision of whether
to keep using it could be made for us if they phase it out.

I'm interested to hear your ideas for how best to communicate. I want to
continue to use a variety of social media to spread the word and draw interest
in the Chapter, but we need to have one main place to call home. Should it
continue to be this Yahoo! Group? Should it be Facebook, (possibly in
conjunction with some kind of linked file-sharing tool)? Or are there other even
better alternatives we should consider?

Whatever we choose, we need to have a mix of private and public communication
options. We need to be able to have private conversations within our group, and
be able to privately share photos, files, etc. We also need a public facing
side that gets information out to those who have not yet joined and helps them
find us and easily join us. Finally, we need something that everyone in the
Chapter can feel comfortable with and access readily so you don't miss important
information and so that you can easily respond and share.

With so many social media options available today, I'm afraid that we may not be
able to find one thing that is ideal for everyone, but hopefully we can
accommodate most the vast majority.

Please send me your thoughts on this by replying to this post/email.

Thank you!

We just received word that the APG Board of Directors is considering our
Chapter's proposal to add a new student membership status, with a discounted
rate on annual APG dues. Kathleen Hinckley, Executive Director of APG, had this
to say:

"Thank you for the proposal from UVAPG Chapter regarding student
memberships. The Board of Directors will be participating in a Strategic
Planning Session on January 30, 2012, in Salt Lake City. We have hired a
consultant to facilitate the planning. Your proposal will be included in the
discussions. Please let your chapter members know, and thank you again for
contacting APG with your recommendation."

Renee and I would like to thank Charlene Pipkin, for making the suggestion to
submit this proposal, and Michael Melendez, for drafting the wording for the
proposal.

We will keep you posted on what we hear from the Board.

Each quarter, our Chapter has the opportunity to submit news about our Chapter
and its members. The Chapter Spotlight highlights the collective activities of
UVAPG. Member News is a chance to highlight individual contributions.

We would love to share news about APG members in our area who are making
significant contributions to the profession. Some examples of newsworthy items
include awards received, books published, articles published in major national
publications (such as NGSQ, TAG, etc.), or a member featured in print,
electronic, or Internet media. (APG Quarterly is not looking for information
about speaking engagements at a local or state gatherings or publications at the
local or state level.) This is also an opportunity to honor any local APG
members who have recently passed away.

If you have something to share about your own activities, or you have news about
another local APG member you know, please email that information to me. We have
just a few days left to get something in for the next issue, but if it comes
later, we can submit it for the following issue. Throughout the coming year,
please continue to submit this kind of news, so that we can include it in
upcoming issues of APGQ.

Thank you!

For our January UVAPG activity, we will be traveling up to Salt Lake to
participate in the Plenary Session of the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy,
featuring the venerable Thomas W. Jones. Tom will be speaking on the topic "The
Genealogical Proof Standard: What It Is and What It Is Not." The session is
free to the public.

The event will be held on Monday night, January 23rd at the downtown Salt Lake
Radisson Hotel. Tom's presentation starts at 7:00 p.m. Plan to arrive early to
get a good seat, as Tom's lecture will be quite popular.

Those interested in carpooling up from Utah Valley will meet at the American
Fork Park & Ride lot (just west of I-15 at American Fork Main Street) at 5:15
p.m. Please contact me if you are interested in carpooling so that we can
coordinate rides. (Some of you may be attending SLIG anyway and will already be
there.)

Please note: This event will take the place of our regular meeting. There will
be no UVAPG meeting on Thursday, January 26th.

I hope that many of you will plan to take advantage of this great opportunity to
hear from one of the genealogy professions' preeminent educators.

Joe,

Thank you for the many ways in which you and Renee are reaching out to members and potential members of the UVAPG. I don't have any communications solutions to offer, just a couple comments.

I communicate by email so any communication that allows me an email notification gets to me. But I keep my inbox manageable by turning off notifications of Facebook postings.

>we need to have a mix of private and public communication options.
I agree. Whether it's called "communication" or "marketing" or "presence," there is a difference between what's being discussed with chapter members and communications promoting the UVAPG chapter. This is an interesting balance. And at what point are we duplicating what's happening on the Virtual Chapter?

And speaking of the Virtual Chapter, I suggest that a member of the UVAPG specifically be appointed/volunteer to also be a member of the Virtual Chapter. The UVAPG can glean ideas from the Virtual Chapter as well as to promote UVAPG activities to those Virtual Chapter members living in Utah Valley. (I assume there are some.) It is nice that members have these options for meeting their individual interests.

>or to post our bylaws
The UVAPG has its own bylaws? I'm more out of touch with the chapter than I realized! ;o)

Again, thanks for all that you do.

Good morning APGer’s,
I am attaching the latest volunteer sheet showing the vacancies which need to be filled.  The main hindrance (I am told) is the fact the RootsTech folks have not published a program schedule yet.  They promise this will happen very soon.
We just need to get some names in those empty slots to make certain APG has solid representation in the vendor/exhibit hall during this fantastic event.  I promise you will enjoy yourself and will get a great big THANKS from APG.

Just click on this link, select the time you can volunteer and email me directly.

Subject: Stumped. Need help ...

Hi again. Would you have someone who knows Ancestry well, try to help find the BD, DD, and MD of Mary Warren and the first name of Murphee? Or Murphy, Murphey, Murfe, Murfee, Murphree, etc.

His children include Richard,  Simon, Arthur. All born about 1700 -1705 in Surry Co., VA. The family legend suggests that his name was Richard or Simon, born in Ireland, kidnapped when he was 7 to 10 years of age. He must have married a couple years before any children were born. Legend also said he married a 'Mary' and was an indentured servant to William Byrd I of Westover Plantation, Charles City VA.

I'll pay them for their time to identify my lost 5th great grandfather and wife. Help is appreciated.

Sheldon Murphy

Good news. We will get to tour the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at BYU this
year. I'm waiting for confirmation from Russ Taylor, the Department Chair, on
which date would be best. Stay tuned. Howard Bybee helped to facilitate this
opportunity for us. I can't promise how far behind the scenes we will be able
to go, but I hope that it will be interesting for everyone. There is a lot of
material in the collection that is of interest to family historians, and you
don't have to be a student to make use of it.

In anticipation of further growth to our UVAPG chapter meetings, we are moving
the location of our meetings to the Center for Family History and Genealogy,
Room 1031 in the Joseph F Smith Building on BYU Campus. We will meet in the
computer lab that is part of the center. This change will be effective starting
in March, with our meeting on the 22nd.

We hope this will be as convenient, if not more so, than the library location
has been. With additional space plus the computer lab facilities, we will be
able to accommodate more attendees as well as broaden our options for our
meetings with the computer lab technology.

The Joseph F Smith Building is the building just west of the main Library
building (the above ground portion). It has a large courtyard with a fountain.
The Center is located on the main floor, in the southeast corner.

Joe,

If you would like the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group to announce your monthly meetings at our 2nd Saturday meetings each month, would you get me the name of the presenter and the title no later than two or three days before each second Saturday?
